HELLO FRIENDS!! Today it’s all about color - and as someone who is known for wearing almost only black, I decided to dip my toes into the personal color analysis trend I've been hearing about for years and seeing all over TikTok. Because I've always been curious... am I a winter? Autumn? Summer? Or even Spring? Pastels have never been my forte, but I was open to at least hearing about them. So, we took a little detour to Toronto and visited Julia Dobkine from Agile Styling, an expert in color analysis who I’d been following on Tiktok, to find out my colors, my season, my tones, and everything underneath those tones. What do you guys think? Would you try this?
Also, thanks to the virtual color analysts, the color key, for their help in fact-checking the video and collaborating on celebrities for the 12 seasons for our graphics! To learn your season virtually, check out @‌thecolorkey_ on Instagram! **celebrities shown here are examples based on the color key's best classification done in good faith but without participation in the color key analysis process. Accurate results can only be achieved through their color analysis process!!

Right? She lucked out! It suits her so well. A lot of people are reluctant to try pink lipstick, but it doesn’t look “Barbie Pink” on people with cool skin. Maybe Barbie needs a color analysis. I would not be surprised if she’s really a Light Spring and has been wearing the wrong shades of pink, all along.

Actually when I went to a personal colour consultant, she gave me secondary colour palette that still looks good, even if not the best. I think it is important to know the range of what looks okay to the best, not just sticking to the best. My consultant also gave me tips of how to make the best of colours that are not in the good tone for me by playing with contrast, position of the colours, etc. It is actually more freeing than restrictive when you have these tips and insights on how to make colours work for you!

A reminder that your colors don't matter unless you want them to, if you have bright colors on your pallet, but hate them, then you wear the muted colors. You don't ever have to please anyone but yourself.
Also; trends aren't automatically terrible, trends could help you find your style.
im not gonna be cringe and say “thanks for likes” and going to be cringe and say “why tf does this have a ton of likes”

my mom (who is super good at this) gives people this advice: to find out what your palette is, look at your wardrobe of favorite clothes. if you always love how you look in certain colors, it's probably because they're the most flattering colors for you. also people tend to compliment you when you're wearing your best palette.

The funny thing is someone who has been professionally trained to do this like myself can tell what you are without doing the actual analysis. The process is done to shock the client so they understand the basic premise of colour seasons and use it in their daily life. Having said that. I still wear black even though it’s not my colour :)

As a Winter myself who has used my colors faithfully since my teens and can recognize them pretty well, I've always been of the opinion that Safiya is a fellow Winter. She couldn't wear as much black as she does, looking as good as she does in it, and not be one.

  • kattelyn92
    kattelyn92 6 months ago +55

It would be interesting to do this with a few color stylists and see if they come to the same conclusion. I personally just don't have the eye for this and can't see the difference in most instances 😅 but it's still a fun idea.

    • Science Not Stigma
Science Not Stigma 2 months ago +1

Yes! One Clip-Sharer got two analyses, with very different results. She did hers online, which is very hit or miss. She definitely narrowed it down, but in-person is much more accurate. It used to be hard for me to see the subtle differences, but the further down this rabbit hole I go, the more interesting it gets…unlike some consumer trends, for sure!

As someone who was in high school in the early 80’s, my mom took me to a color “expert.” It turned out I was a winter, too. Going with this knowledge in hand, Mom picked an iced blue fabric with which she made a gown for my upcoming concert. It was a really lovely dress that totally washed out my skin under the stage lights. In the pictures, you could see my black hair, some lip color, the dress and my instrument. It looked as if a ghost with a wig was filling out my clothes!

So thinking back to your Perfect Makeover video, Brad and Stacy thought you had a slightly warmer tone and now it's cooler, more than likely because your hair color is darker. The one thing they all have in common though is that those richer, jewel tones REALLY suit you! Especially that royal purple and dark emerald tones.

As someone who works in fashion retail and has been a personal shopper, this is the most exhausting thing to be introduced to. It's not the service per se I think it can be helpful and fun. But it's the customer who laps it up. They take it way way too seriously and unless a piece matches the colour in their book exactly, they won't buy it! It's incredibly frustrating. I have been able to make people look beautiful and feel confident without a silly little book for years.

I think at the beginning you just gotta train your eyes, so that’s why Saf was sticking to her booklet at first. But after some time it got much easier.

those colours are really perfect on you. I am a true autumn. Found this out by analysing why I always wear the same 5 shirts and somehow never the thousand other things in my wardrobe. We are simply drawn to the colours that suit us best and we also feel best in those. So you can actually figure this out on your own by being honest to yourself and paying attention to your own behaviour.

Hi. Yes, I think we are drawn by instinct to the colors that look good on us, or we often get compliments when we wear those colors. I'm a TA too, and drawn to red, orange & yellow (have lots of blouses in those colors) & I often get compliments. However, I also liked pink/ fuschia. It's very much appreciated - this is what makes this channel one of the best! I am very curious though, to be frank, how this channel survives in this age of online video. Saf and her team's videos are so thoroughly researched and beautifully executed, and in the same timeframe it takes to produce one video, another Clip-Sharer may have released five longform videos of them just reacting to a subreddit that each get just as much engagement. Without trying to put down any other content creators, this team clearly has so much passion and integrity!

Since Safiya loves wearing black, one trick to remember is that a a strong enough saturation, many deep colors will visually "read" as black but with a little something extra. For example, the hex code 062314 will look black to most eyes but on someone that looks amazing in a saturated cool green, would also reflect onto the skin in a really interesting and complimentary way - same with blues and purples as well.

Honestly I wish I had known about this kind of color analysis when I was still interested in acting. I NEVER wore good colors for my auditions and always wondered why I didn't feel confident or why I couldn't figure out my "type" of character ! With this information, I feel like I'd be unstoppable :D

@Jenny what? Lol… that’s not an insult. The woman doing her color session even said that the other colors “washed her out”. It is true that colors can often make people look older since it can make their skin look grey.. which is literally what the lady said to her face for some of the colors. Me saying she looks younger is true… the color of the clothes makes her skin glow- which can give the appearance of being younger. Please don’t take it that serious.

I'd like to get my colors done too since it's so hard trying to tell what color my undertones are. The closest that I've gotten was being told that I look good in orange and I don't like how purple looks on me, but that's pretty much it. Saf definitely rocks the wintry palette though, so good for her! Those jewel tones are dead drop gorgeous.

    • Kitty S
      Kitty S 5 months ago +5

Hi. If you look good in orange, then you're probably a warm season (spring or autumn). What type of orange suits you better, bright orange (spring) or darker/ muted orange like rust or copper? If it's the latter, you're probably an autumn. I say probably, because you'll need draping to confirm your season.

    • Thien
      Thien 5 months ago +5

@Kitty SI would say the more muted, earthy tones works best for me. Super saturated colors (especially cool ones) highlights the yellow in me, which make me look a bit ill if I'm being honest. The colors I gravitate towards aren't like the cool, bright icy pinks but more of a peach or salmon pink.

  • Kas
    Kas 6 months ago +1646

The makeup was definitely the biggest stand-out for me. I hadn't even realized the warm foundation was kind of... not doing Saf justice. I think a slightly darker eyeshadow will maybe tone down the overall brightness of the look itself, but the pink lip, the cheeks, etc, really made her pop. That was neat!

For those who are interested in this color styling, keep in mind it's all meant for your top half, or things that are near your face. You can wear whatever color bottoms you like, and you don't need to wear full outfits of your colours. These tests are literally about seeing how your face looks against certain colors, so don't be worried thinking you have to give up your favorite pair of pants!

    • No Name
No Name 6 months ago +134

Also if you have a favorite top that goes against your color palette, just wear it. Color theory was meant to be broken and played with, not treated as a strict ruleset.

    • Vixx Celacea
Vixx Celacea 6 months ago +36

True! But at the same time, there is color theory against colors themselves and unless you know how to mix really well, wearing a muted warm tone pant with a cool jewel tone top might look a bit funky. Usually accessories and additions can balance it, like the color of the outer top or inner, belt, shoes etc.
Blue jeans weirdly look good on everyone. Apparently blue goes with most other colors. Even in jeans though, you can choose a cool, neutral or warmer tone.

For those of you that don’t get it, think of it in terms of interior design. If you have walls painted a deep, rich mustard would you pick an icy baby blue couch or a deep emerald? Yes, both couches are pretty and functional, but one is going to look nice against the walls and one is going to stand out in an awkward way!
The walls = your own natural skin/eye/hair color. Yes, you can wear anything you want, but some colors are just going to look effortlessly harmonious on you and some aren’t. You probably already know that some colors just don’t suit you; color seasons just kind of refine that to make it clearer. It’s all based on color theory and it’s not just a TikTok trend; there’s color advice from 100+ years ago along this vein because color is a fundamental aspect of human visual perception. Color seasons just make color theory more approachable for those who aren’t technically inclined, since color theory can get incredibly complex.

I’m a winter too but I love the colors orange and yellow that are not in my palette. What I do is make sure those colors don’t touch my skin. So I have a cool toned blue dress with a medium sized yellow flower pattern on it or a white tote with an orange image in the middle. So the Bass Pro Shop shirt with the orange text in the middle would have followed this guideline.

Yes. Before I found out I suit them I got an emerald green/teal teddy bear coat as my Christmas gift and my mom hasn't stopped talking about it since. She says it looks stunning on me and the colour is so unique but it works great because it's not a pea green that would clash with my olive tone. But it has some blue in it too. She told me how she would go and get herself the same coat if she has any money to spare. I got it for like 30% off during black Friday since I needed a new coat. Because she also couldn't stop talking about how my old coat looked very used. Regardless I wear jewel tones quite often. Like the sweater in my pic and I had a time in highschool where I'd wear anything blue. My mom told me blue washes me out a bit being pale but apparently it suits me very well because younger me was onto something.

We would spent an hour with the stylist giving our clothes to the people they belonged to. It was legit so much fun seeing the clothes go to the right people. People definitely pop in their right colors. Also, free clothes that look amazing on you.
