She said 18 but the guy thought best i can do is 5k
Naw its $18
Rick is taking all the risk.
Show is also staged
@Its Juan best I can do is pretend to stage it
i’ll give you 8 or go sell it yourself
I'm still not entirely convinced she didn't mean $18.00.
I thought she meant exactly that.
She valued it at 18k. Chumlee offered me 15k to which I declined 👍 full episode is on Pawn Stars YT channel.
@youngster_ryan Did you keep it or sell it somewhere else later?
Nah i have it the book but its only the 2nd edition
"You heard the lady, $18."
She said 18-20 and Chum said the best I can do is 35
18 000 $
"Sorry Bro, best I can do is $12. gotta keep margins you know, with inflation and all."
*Me, Bankrupt, watching the video:* "wow, $12! I wish I had _THAT_ kind of money!"
*My boss:* "Back to work! I don't pay your creditors to watch youtube; and you've got another 12 hr shift tomorrow."
@HoBoMiKe it’s 18 000 $ !! Not some 12$
Going to a pawn shop is stupid these days. Just sell it online so you don't have to deal with the middle man. They'll always only offer you no more than 70% of its worth.
yeah you only go to a Pawn shop when you’re looking for fast cash. That’s the expectation people have to have.
70% is generous.
When most large retail business rely on a 100% markup on cost value, 70% would be reasonable.
People go To this pawn shop because it's a win win Even if you don't sell. They have access to experts that can give you an official appraisal on film, so you get exposure for your product and they get ratings.
But if you're talking about going to any pawn shop in general just to sell, yeah you're right
Bro, 18 dollars is a fucking good deal
Pretty sure she means thousands, thats a collector’s book
@I Like Animalsnope she just said 18
@MGLshe was talking in the thousands....
@Oleshe would have said thousand trust me I know
18k mate watch the full video
She prolly creased that shit when she was looking at it 😂
I felt that
"It was worth 30k but now my finger prints are on it I'd say its closer to 18"
that might have been the case if she opened it more then 45 degrees but she didnt she opened the book in a V wedge style being able to still check for certain mistakes without damaging the spine even further, the pages might get a bit bent but since the ridge/spine isnt harmed the pages will easily become flat again with a bit of low pressure from just putting a book on top of it
@Verma Wyrda 🤓
I might pay 18 bucks for it. But seems a bit steep for me.
For a copy thats missing some words and has multiples of others 😂 ripoff fasho
$18 for a used paperback book I don't think so
@dataabort it's a TV show
They definitely pay her to low ball the items
So it's worth like 35, he wants 30, tell him it's worth 15 and I'll slide you 10
I looked it up and now they go for $45k to $850k so if he sold it then he got ripped off
@Dr_Dildo 850k wtf
@Michael-uv2ox wasting money for a fiction book is hardly surprising for Americans.
I wish people knew how pawn shops work. If you want top dollar for your item, then you need to sell it YOURSELF. Pawn shops are the middle person. They are the people you go to when you don't want to take the time and effort to sell your own stuff. If the book is $18,000, he is NOT going to offer $18,000. Duh. This isnt a personal item he is going to keep for himself. Their plan is to resell and make money. The pawn shop wants to make enough money to make this worth their time. If they start at $5000, but end at $10,000..... that gives them the potential of earning about $8000. Keep in mind that they are absolutely taking an expensive risk. Do you know how many people in this world are willing to spend $18,000 on a first addition Harry Potter book that isn't perfect? NOT many. And if they can't find a buyer, they are out all the money. People thinking he should have been given $18,000 clearly do not know how pawn shops work. If you want top dollar, fine the buyer yourself.
The people on this show just want to be on TV. That's the only conclusion i can come to as to why people go to them
I would presume the 18 is their buy price estimate, with margins built in, rather than their sale price estimate. Probably sale price is more like 25-30, hence why the guy wants 30.
I have watched this show for more than a decade now & it's upsetting to see people actually calling the shop cheap. Surely they don't know how business works. You don't buy something that's worth 5$ to sell it for 5$ . That is if you're lucky to get that 5$ back🤣. Honestly
@Hateful Entity the memes are along the lines of "expert says it's worth 30 grand on a good day, i can do $200 cash in hand". Presumably that's exaggerated. But it's not just the potential for profit, it's also that you're taking a risk, you own a valuable item in the meantime, which could get stolen, there's the risk of not selling it or having to discount it at least, your money is *not* in an index fund, which is another opportunity cost... Anything over 50% of the retail price as a buy is more than fair, and anything under 70-80% of retail as a sale price is fair as well. Because dealers like this will rarely sell at ful retail, either.
@dynastynyy It's exactly that. All of the people on the show are pre-planned and hand picked before they ever walk into the shop. Even the people in the background are there to witness the show. It's basically a shitty version of antique roadshow with some scripting added.
Hold onto it for a decade, and you'll get $30,000 for it. Wow, I got a lot of comments for some random remark I made, I wasn't serious.
Or she’ll be cancelled by then and it’ll be worth bupkis
@Tiffany Roberts people will still like the books
Old books aren’t usually worth much
@Dover look up some old first editions some of them do get up there.
“My book expert is just walking around” bro wtf why they just walking around chillin
chumlee out here looking healthy af
Was checking the comments cuz I low key couldn't tell if it was him or not
Is it him? His voice even lost weight.
Brought in a deck of ORIGINAL laminated, pristine condition (verified by a licensed appraiser) signed baseball cards. The appraiser valued the whole deck for almost $4,000.
The shop I took them to offered me $100 bucks for the deck and when I said no, they gave me the deck back and when I got home I counted 8 missing cards that I found on their shelf the following week for $200-$400 per card.
These shops can fucking burn to the ground and it still wouldn't be enough.
Damn dude, sounds like they never planned on paying for your cards at all with that game
How tf did you let someone take your cards? That's on you as much as it is them. It wasnt david Blaine counting your cards. Something tells me you were busy talking instead of paying attention to what the man was doing.
Revenge is best served cold, let some time go by, and when youre ready get creative.
Did you call the police and report the theft?
If you go to a pawn shop and expect to get the full value of your item, you are the problem. You cant change my mind.
People who say “you can’t change my mind” are the problem.
The number of people who don’t wear gloves touching rare things hurts my soul
Yes I also have my book expert walking around somewhere.
They are known to wander
It's a tv show dude
@Darryl Williams really ? Holy shit I didn't know. It's a joke. Guess it went over your head dude.
@Ruben Jaimes if it was a joke why wasn't it funny?
@justaviewer obviously because not everyone finds it funny. Duh 🙄
Remember, pawn shops are primarily loan sharks.
They are not consignment stores or an auction house
Rick: “best I can do is $50 store credit. And I’m taking a lot of risk here”
18 bucks? Damn. That's good resale value on a book. I usually give old books away for free.
18 thousand.
@The Terminator • 50 years and you're mistake she said 18
@The Terminator • 50 years and maybe you need to listen again
@Claude Dallas mate, I have watched the episode this clip is from.
18 thousand.
she creases the fk outta the book by opening it wide as open then devalues it 10k for it having a crease, gotta love it.
L comment
Tbh harry potter kinda L in general. JK had a whole fucking episode on twitter to the point every actor of the films had to come out and say they don't agree with her.
18$ is a little bit higger than what I'm willing to give. You gotta remember, I'm taking all the risk here.
I love that she bends the book then says "oh its bent"
help rick earn a ton of money.
Didn't happen
The book already had a crease when I purchased back in 2022 👍
Don’t open the book. once it’s bent, it will depreciate. LOL.
@Terrible Cain its literally in the video.
"$18,000? Alright I can work with that"
"No sir.... eighteen dollars"
Was it $18,000 or $18?
18k
if he wants 30 and she offers 18, he can get 25 easily. she wants it.
Opens book* “there is a crease”
Best I can do is a coupon at Home Depot. I take on a lot of risk.
Would you consider trading it for a photo of a banana
Bro sometimes the "offers" are more an insult than anything, like just recently I went to a local shop to sell some of my old magic the gathering cards so I could get a tone of boxes of the newest set for game nights with buddies and was selling a mana vault from alpha edition which has a current market value of $3,800. Dude said "best I can offer is $50 cause I really can't see myself spending more than that on some playing card" like dude just say no you don't want it don't try to scam me like that.
She's earning her pay check. Robbed the guy in plain sight.
I would totally pay 18 dollars for that, I don't know what's the fuss.
Just seeing them handle it without any gloves is freaking me out.
Apparently gloves are only for really old books, made of animal hide / leather and so on. The oils in your skin , and pH of your skin / sweat / etc. can damage that stuff when it's old
For regular paper, you just have to be sure to have clean hands.
That's actually a bit of a myth! Look into it. Even with much rarer/older books it's best to handle them with clean bare hands so you can feel properly and not make any mistakes when handling the books. Look it up.
@Paper Man I learned this from the philomena cunk interview
In the full episode she walked in just finishing a hotdog and licked her fingers clean before picking ip the book, no cap
I love how these guys will call in an expert to get an appraisal and still lowball the fuck out of the customer
"So yea man, best I can do now is 15 bucks"
My book expert just happens to be here where she will lowball the shit out the cost for me and touch it all over. 😂
"touch it all over" .... eyeroll emoji
Smooth brain
She wasnt Weaving gloves. I'm the cómic book world , you would examine using gloves
So many people probably have bank like this just sitting around their houses
“Let me get our Harry Potter 1st edition book expert that we have on hand”
L comment
@OrtegaSauce1910 I’ve been staring at your reply for 2 minutes now. what part makes it an L?? did my comment somehow offend you
@Futaro- you think a random book expert wouldn't have general knowledge on what to look for in a first edition book of one of the biggest book series of all time? It's like mocking the show for having a car expert that has niche info on 70s muscle cars. It's literally her job to know that shit.
Opens the book, sais its not Fine because of a crease on the spine.
Love how she's picking it up, adding to the oil and creasing.
$18,000 and she couldn’t even be bothered to put on a 10 cent pair of gloves 😂
I swear people get overpaid to be experts when really they just Google stuff 🤣
no gloves is the standard in archival and museum work
She: to me closer to $18k
Him: the best l can do is $10
18 bucks for an old used harry potter book? These people are nuts
18.000
I love that he stores it in a clamshell case!
Yes, with rare books there are no grading companies that encapsulate it in plastic. Keeping it in these clamshell cases is crucial to maintaining condition. I got this case from Peter Harrington Books in the UK. They make great cases!
18000?
"No 18.00, the hells wrong with you"
She played him fr. 30,000$ to 18$. W
Isn’t she supposed to wear gloves? Touching this rare artifact with her greasy fingers, making sure to touch every important line of text
It’s actually recommended even with really old books that you don’t use gloves. Because you’re more likely to tear a page and also the gloves carry more dirt than freshly washed hands. Just using clean hands is best.
@Just Random Games Thanks for clarifying!
@Just Random Games bro you have no clue what you're talking about, you're definitely wrong. If your statement were true, why do they wear gloves to inspect and clean historical documents/books/etc. Looks like you commented without actually doing any research or critical thinking
@Justin Heard “According to the Library of Congress, wearing gloves while handling antiquarian books may do more harm than good. Portland State University Library Special Collections follows their advice to handle most rare and valuable books with clean, dry hands.”
@Just Random Games bro you've obviously never seen it done and just go off of internet information. I've seen this with my own eyes bro
My mum threw out my 1st edition potters. My OG 150 Pokémon card collection and the OG Lego Hogwarts. Devastating.
I would NEVER trust the opinion of someone who doesn't have my interests as their motivation. In cases like this, ALWAYS get a second, independent opinion.
note to self bring your own reliable buddy then pawn shop just call their friends who help the pawn make more money by low balling amounts.
"There is this semen expert right in the back, Ill go grab him"
How can they find experts for everything 💀
Because the show is fake
I'm sorry, but having the person "buying" something from you, and having THEIR own consultant tell you how much your stuff is worth, so THEY "pay a fair price" is bonkers.
"Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay" and I highly doubt anyone is paying more than $20 for a fucking Harry Potter book
(insert Padme star wars meme)
Anakin - This is a superior copy. Closer to 18 is the best i can do.
Padme - 18 thousand right?
Padme - 18 thousand right?
Damn I haven’t watched this show in a hot minute, Chum looks GREAT!
I had to do a double take as well..
It seems like he got taller too; probably stands up straighter than before.
Handsome dude.
And he looks so much more confident and comfortable.
Fastest way to drop 200lbs is crystal meth 😂
Casually has his book expert walking around somewhere
Now we all know how to make a first edition of Harry Potter book
Book expert not using gloves, quite the expert indeed.
edit: apparantly there is a misconception in the public about wearing gloves when handling books. the experts agree that it is ok to handle the book with your (clean and dry) hands. i was not aware of this and now i am wondering why i believed that all this time. shoutout to @tylerPistachio and @siddharthVenkat for making me look deeper into this issue
Expert lowballer
that is the proffesional rule acctualy ^.^
Wearing gloves is more likely to dampen the handler’s ability to feel the integrity of the pages, so it has become protocol in recent years to handle books without gloves (unless the ink or dye may be toxic).
The oil present on the fingers wouldn’t do as much damage as a tear.
@Siddharth Venkat did some research and you were right. i always believed otherwise
@Tyler Pistachio did some research and you are right. i always believed otherwise.
“Best I can do is 4 dollars”
Math teachers getting tingles looking at this while having the insatiable urge to say "18 what? Bananas? "
"My book expert is walking around somewhere..."
-Who has a book expert just walking around their store?!
18 what? Thousand? Hundred? Dollars? Cents?
Thousands
“Best I can do is $14 and a tic-tac”
I had a kg of silver once, the price was 600 a kg at the time. local pawn shop offered 100 lol.
Don't you go to silver shops to sell silver lol
Go to a jewelry store next time bro. They'll buy it for like 90% of price.
I bet you took it
But does she mean 18k?
She means 18k. The dude will only offer $50 and resell it for $20K
@Parker Clementsdidn't they kind of proved to you that this show is not real
expert wouldn't handle it without gloves.
Chum Lee grew up all of a sudden? 😂😂😂
It's pretty lucky that the book expert just happened to be present.
"Alright, 18 thousand sounds okay"
"No no.18 bucks"
I'd pay $18 not to have to hear about Harry Potter ever again.
Just remember, if you find a guy who collects rare books you will get that 30
She said 20 gs and looked at ol
Buddy behind the counter and brought it down jusssttt a smidge💀
i deadass thought she meant 18 dollars for a whole 3 days before I checked comments lmfao
"I want $30,000"
"You could do $20, but im conservative so id say $18"
I bet the dude was crushed
Think they meant thousands lol
@ShitpostShorts you could be right who knows.
Could? Bruh
20,000 or 18,000 bro
These guys have an expert for everything
"It's worth 50k" "best I can do is $30... THIRTY DOLLAR
*Book expert opens book thoroughly to check the inside*
*few seconds later*
"wtf it's creased bro, see that line? Yeah it's ruined. Can't do full price now."
She said 18-20 and Chum said the best I can do is 35k
She works for the pawn shop, what do you expect she would say?
Book expert paid by pawn shop....undercuts every item
"well that's crazy, i'll do $8k"
Customer - brings in any object
Worker - yeah, I got a guy for that. In fact, he's right around the corner now.
Chubbly, Dick and all the other shysters, may as well tell every customer, "Let me find my friend that agrees with me".
When she said 20 I really thought she meant $20 😂
18$ for a book is to much
Amazing how many "experts" they have on this show that handle paper or other delicate materials without gloves 🤔
She's opening it up already with the knowledge that it's worth tens of thousands of dollars just casually getting the oil from her hands all over the pages 😅
All of the" experts" and none of them use gloves
A second hand book is supposed to have creases. Its one of the proofs of its authenticity too. If anything, it should enhance the value of the book.
Would you rather have a book in perfect condition or not?
Splits the book open, complains the spine is creased.....
*opens book and creases it*
“ooh yea you do have a little bit of a crease here”
The book was already creased when I purchased back in 2021.
‘You do have a little bit of a crease’ she says after opening and breaking the spine
It’s best to just KEEP it… more value in the long run. Just store it away properly.
Ahh, so glad you commented, otherwise he might not have stored it away properly
If I believed I had a book worth $30000 I would not let anyone handle it bare handed. Like how could that not affect the value
18
"THOUSAND!?"
Dollars.
I read that in Pickles voice
"I'd say it's worth 20... but for me, closer to 18, so I can double my cut with that extra 2k you're screwing this guy on"
People don't understand that a pawn shop is for quick cash, not selling things at its actual value.
Most people actually do
"I wouldn't quite call fine."
...
"This is a superior copy."
Imagine paying 30.000 for a book
“let me just call my first generation Harry Potter and the philosophers stone guy”
"Has a bow in it" Yes lady cause you just opened the book lmao
Like you're supposed to not read it on the rare chance it's a future collector's item.
Bout my year salary for a god damn Harry Potter book...
Best I can do is 7$ and an Applebee's gift card
"Woah! Hey! We aren't made of money! $4 and a taco bell coupon."
@Kiloechovictor 🤣
They have experts for everything lmao
