I love the idea of your neighbors peering over into your yard after hearing all the yelling and seeing absolutely nothing in the backyard since you're under the water.
see, my dad used the phrase "getting a French literature degree" when talking about these kinds of classes, and from the hatred with which he says that I think he knew someone who did that personally. Meanwhile, I've learned through this that this is the phrase normal people use! It makes French literature classes sound a lot more reasonable tbh
Is no one going to talk about their hallmark inspired raycon commercial??!???!!!?! I love how you guys always come up with creative commercial ideas. I always watch them all the way through. 😂
I feel like you’ve just proven underwater basket weaving to be excellent college course material. It’s not at all about the basket or the weaving, it’s about the problem solving to be able to do the thing.
Along with ‘knitting fog and plaiting sawdust’, ‘underwater basket weaving’ was a common phrase for useless or unproductive activities at my house. From the UK for ref.
as a German viewer without knowledge of local idioms, i really appreciate the explanation of the phrase 😅 i genuinely would have thought it was because of the dry reeds
As a portuguese viewer, I don't know which sentence you're talking about and I'm confused at why did they do it fully underwater, other than being Evan and Kathelyn 😅 Edit: Nvm I found it 🤣
weirdly, as a german viewer as well, I have absorbed the expression through cultural osmosis I guess, so it made perfect sense to me, I just thought it was funny that they would choose to do something like this when its also the idiom 😂
You know, I've tried REGULAR basket weaving and it is so hard! To do this underwater is probably crazy hard! Also, I hate ads. Don't we all? well, I always love your guy's really bad, cheezy ones. They make me smile :) (I'm also really impressed with how soft your shirts are! My aunt got me some [ a men's and a women's size of the Chaotically spelled Chaos] and I really have to fight the urge to ask her to buy more and wear them every day lol)
Thank you for finally doing what I always thought underwater basket weaving was! It took me years to realize that they only submerged the baskets and the reeds not the whole person.
@Dutchik "Pulling yourself up by the bootstraps" is not impossible, you only need a tiny remote control rocket with monopropelant and being in orbit, then you attach the rocket to the bootstraps and remote control away from the planet you are orbiting, that way you are pulling yourself up by the bootstraps, nobody said you had to do it by hand and without tools. To be in orbit is required because otherwise the shoes would fly out of your feet
@NoiseDay that phrase doesn’t mean it’s something that’s impossible to do it means some thing that’s a waste of time to do. A degree in underwater basket weaving is a useless degree. That’s the point of the phrase.
My dad always used the term “underwater basket weaving” to refer to useless (or almost useless) degrees, so you’re not the only ones who were confused when other people didn’t understand!
I’ve never heard the basket weaving term butttt my bf is from Vermont and a college near where he lived offered igloo making courses…so that’s our go to (would be cool to take the course)
Yeah I’ve never heard the phrase but, those type of degrees weren’t really allowed at my college outside graduating behind in your major 🙄 was fun to watch
am i the only one imagining the neighbours the whole video? like "how do you get it so upright? is it your thigs?......its my thighs and my crotch" brooo the neighbours mustv had a fun day listening XD
I've never heard the term before and until you explained it I was just happy to go along with it as yet another quirky, overly complicated challenge that E&K thought up for themselves. ;) Considering that these are the first baskets you ever made and you did it underwater, I think they're pretty damn great! Of course, my approval is meaningless; what did Joob think? I'm pretty sure she's going to fit, but would she deign to sit?
As someone who's SCUBA certified and has a degree in which underwater photography comes into play, I always get so happy seeing other people diving in videos so I was OVERJOYED to see you both taking on such a strange underwater task!
Evan and Katelyn just proved that underwater basket weaving is indeed a very difficult thing to do contrary to what we all grew up thinking LOL also this should 100% be an olympic sport
I lived in Hawaii for around 15 years… I had a local woman show me how to weave baskets! Everything you need is free and it’s fun! We would pre soak the fronds for a few hours to a few days and we put a fabric softener in the water! A neat trick to better soften yet not weakening the fronds! I loved it so much !!!
🦋I was laughing! I was holding my breath! I was watching every move of this basket weaving video! It had danger! It had comedy! It had romance! It had me guessing and feeling them good vibes! Funny, perilous and informative! Perfect combination for Friday! Thanks, guys! I’m sending y’all big ‘ol southern hugs🦋
i was born in 2000 and i’ve also heard “underwater basket weaving” a million times (: not sure if it’s relevant but im from the south too (ga) so maybe it’s more of a regional thing?
I love that y'all troubleshot all the execution of it. I would have gave up on trying to breath underwater and just tried keeping the reeds submerged and working with just my hands underwater. I feel like this could be a fun attrition someplace and a way to sell expensive baskets. Y'all are champs slugging through this. The baskets look great.
I couldn't even wait more than 5 minutes to comment. Evan's very assured response to Katelynn's question "Are we ever going to use this again? Why didn't we just rent equipment?" Was just simply so satisfying (as a thrifty shopper, myself) "Because I got a discount" I only have 2 thumbs, but I give you ALL the thumbs up, sir!
I would unironically watch an entire Evan and Katelyn Hallmark-esque Holiday movie lol 🎥 🍿 It seems like a classic “big city-small town” holiday romcom at first, until you get to the underwater basket weaving subplot… 🌊🧺 Truly, a work of art. 👍
Loved this! I used to do presentations and a part of it was to encourage the audience to go back to school. My attempt at being humorous was to say "except underwater basket weaving". Unfortunately, words are hard and I panicked and said " under water basket bowling". My coworkers have not let me forget it, even 10 yrs later. Lol 😆 Thanks for the video, love you both! And Jubes especially!
Oh man, I’m only 5 minutes into the video and y’all have already helped me with a project! I have been looking for “brass threaded inserts” but had no idea what they were called. Thank you!
This took me way back to my time at Reed College in Portland, OR during the early ’90s, as I think that Reed College might have formed the origin of the phrase Underwater Basket Weaving, which was taught in the college swimming pool. They historically have a yearly festival called Paideia where both faculty and students can offer short courses in areas they have knowledge about (such as Tarot Reading) but one course that was always offered every year was-you guessed it-Underwater Basket Weaving. Now to be certain-given the unusually quirky sense of humor displayed by Reedies-it’s possible that they just decided to take the common term and turn it into a literal course, much like you did with your video, but given that Reed was the first time I had even heard of it, I naturally assumed at the time that they originated it. I got the sense that the course had been taught there at least as far back as the 60’s, but I could be mistaken, as I never saw it detailed in a history of the college. However, I can assure you, it wasn’t for credit, and there wasn’t much charged as a course fee.
Everything about this was amazing, from the concept to the equipment to finished product to editing... hilarious and obviously totally worth it : ) Except now we expect all future videos to be underwater though ; )
This is literally what I have pictured my whole life when hearing "underwater basket weaving". I know logically this could not be the case but in my head there's always a person like 15 feet underwater for some reason surrounded by sea plants and fish just weaving away [holding their breath no less] with a few little bubbles blubbling up from them every now and then. I have wanted to see someone actually attempt this fully submerged since always. You have Fulfilled one of my life's dreams and I will forever be grateful to you for your service. I laughed so hard I cried and was so giddy and happy the whole way through this. The christmas movie in the middle was pure gold as well. Thank you so much for your creativity and the joy you bring to my life!
This was so good!! This video is top notch, I loved it! I just had so much fun and you too! And all those silly things that happened or you said... My face is hurting from smiling so widely. 😁 Also, that kiss in your little commercial was movie-worthy, I had to pause to admire it. ❤
I'm going to be honest, I had never heard the phrase underwater basket weaving... yet I had exactly no questions when I saw Evan and Katelyn were doing it.
I've used that phrase many times but have never actually seen it implemented! Bravo! You have added a new level of credibility to the phrase of getting a degree in underwater basket weaving!
If it helps, I think that the floating thing might be more due to panic. I used to have the same problem (and I still do sometimes), because I tend to overthink the floating aspect, so when I'd try, I'd unintentionally panic, and I'd start to sink. Also, you guys are the only ones that I sit through sponsor segments for. I adore them!
🤞Throw in a couple more videos of "[...] ⚗💊 Symposiums, African Killer Spelling Bees, and Bowling in Ice Hockey Rinks", and you just get a call from Fat Mike and the rest of NOFX, lol. OMG, it would be a dream-come-true to see you guys all collab together!!!! Doing the whole Anarchy Camp list as a relay circuit would be EPIC!
Underwater basket weaving was the hardest merit badge at boy scout summer camp over 8 years ago. Of course it was just a running joke, but a good one. I also appreciate just how overdone the budget and every other part of this was. Definitely adds to the humor.
I don’t know if “underwater basket weaving” is still a thing, but it definitely was in the 1980’s. My best friend was getting her Masters in Occupational Therapy and called me one day laughing because she literally had to take a basket weaving (terrestrial) class as part of the degree program. Basket weaving is way to improve hand/wrist/finger strength & dexterity.
@MouseMaster they are emojis that you get for subcribing to a membership on their channel for a monthly fee, there are other perks, but I don't remember all of them.
I feel like a lot of the problems experienced in this video could have been solved by becoming scuba certified. But I’m not sure the vibes would have been the same if they knew what they were doing. The struggle is part of the charm
This was an absolute roller coaster from start to finish 😂I love all of your commercials, the Raycon holiday parody made me laugh. I also love the new holiday merch! I'm hoping to grab one before they sell out!
You two are literally the CUTEST 😻! I could watch you guys all day every day. I was in a shitty mood and now I'm laughing and feel great ❤️. Love you guys and your content.
I dunno why but underwater basket weaving reminds me of the first Rugrats movie when Dee-Dee was looking at options for giving birth to Dill and one of the rooms have underwater basket weaving.
I love when your guys' southern accents pop up! When I first started watching this channel a few years back, I had no clue that you were actually from Texas. Ya'll had me fooled! Also, I too want to weave a basket now. Maybe just not underwater. It's cold in Northern California!
The most interesting part for me in these vids are discovering the problems and solving it. As a college student in an engineering course yall are just smart and inspiring!
I never heard underwater basket weaving before lol. I thought it was just another one of your projects. My mum used to say that some degrees at University were "Mickey Mouse degrees". I think it meant the same lol.
I have learned many things from this video: That "underwater basket weaving" was a phrase, and also how to possibly do it. If I ever had enough money and time to not only learn how to weave but also underwater weave, who knows maybe I would. Thank you for the education.
This was absolutely amazing. I was rapt by the action and suspense! Also, the ad-read in the middle is the best Hel-mark movie I have ever seen. 10/10 would never attempt but will watch again.
they could have just put their hands under the water, but no, they decided to dive, classic Evan and Katelyn AHAHAHAHAHAHHA
But that wouldn't be anywhere near as immersive now would it?
Nah. Not enough fun
@Evan and Katelyn i love your channel and as a matter a fact i have my own but im thinking about letting my older brother take over for a wiyl
@Evan and Katelynit seems that you guys had a few drinks?
Yea!? Not sure they know how to swim or sink?
1:00 PLEASE HAVE THIS BE PLACED AS A BUSINESS WRITE OFF
9:07 not Evan and Katelyn flat out making fun of hallmark lol.
I love the idea of your neighbors peering over into your yard after hearing all the yelling and seeing absolutely nothing in the backyard since you're under the water.
@shego1142 I'm guessing Evans parents got baskets for Xmas
I’m pretty sure it’s Evan’s parents’ backyard no less lol!
Or seeing two people in scuba gear break the surface of a small swimming pool 🤣🤣🤣
This is exactly what I imagined the first time I heard about underwater basket weaving
see, my dad used the phrase "getting a French literature degree" when talking about these kinds of classes, and from the hatred with which he says that I think he knew someone who did that personally. Meanwhile, I've learned through this that this is the phrase normal people use! It makes French literature classes sound a lot more reasonable tbh
Isn't that like an advanced French language degree?
I mean, just look how big Les Mis got 😂
Is no one going to talk about their hallmark inspired raycon commercial??!???!!!?! I love how you guys always come up with creative commercial ideas. I always watch them all the way through. 😂
I love their videos too!
Yessssssss!!! Love their creative ads 😂
This ad read is fantastic 😆
Waiting for their next channel: E&K Mini-movie specials. They can do a tiny movie for every season!
Same. For everyone else I skip the ads but I always watch E&K's. A) they're funny and interesting B) they have the bar showing how long the ad is
Your ad reads are always THE BEST, I swear they need to pay you guys triple for how good they are
I feel like you’ve just proven underwater basket weaving to be excellent college course material. It’s not at all about the basket or the weaving, it’s about the problem solving to be able to do the thing.
cheaper than an underwater basket weaving degree 😆 this was EPIC you guys crushed it!!!
@Singulant basically
um youtube is an evan and katelyn stan? yes please
@Evan and Katelyn Now are when it demonetizes the video.
woah youtube :0
@Emily Cheng I didn’t watch it
Along with ‘knitting fog and plaiting sawdust’, ‘underwater basket weaving’ was a common phrase for useless or unproductive activities at my house. From the UK for ref.
as a German viewer without knowledge of local idioms, i really appreciate the explanation of the phrase 😅 i genuinely would have thought it was because of the dry reeds
As a portuguese viewer, I don't know which sentence you're talking about and I'm confused at why did they do it fully underwater, other than being Evan and Kathelyn 😅
Edit: Nvm I found it 🤣
As a Martian viewer, I don't understand the idiom. All of our basket weaving is done underwater.
As an English viewer, I second this comment. Never heard this phrase but honestly didn't question it at all. It's just 100% Evan and Katelyn.
As e genuine USA resident... I too thought it was because the reeds get dry
weirdly, as a german viewer as well, I have absorbed the expression through cultural osmosis I guess, so it made perfect sense to me, I just thought it was funny that they would choose to do something like this when its also the idiom 😂
my dad actually taught an underwater basket weaving course when he was in college. he achieved the pinnacle of useless college courses.
Have you shown him this video? He'd probably like it lol
@Sir Pigeon III a few google searches later and I still don't know
I'm not sure if you're serious
You know, I've tried REGULAR basket weaving and it is so hard! To do this underwater is probably crazy hard!
Also, I hate ads. Don't we all? well, I always love your guy's really bad, cheezy ones. They make me smile :)
(I'm also really impressed with how soft your shirts are! My aunt got me some [ a men's and a women's size of the Chaotically spelled Chaos] and I really have to fight the urge to ask her to buy more and wear them every day lol)
The weirdness of everything they do and the way they do it is just what makes me watch this thanks for being a great channel❤😊
they could have just put their hands under the water, but no, they decided to dive, classic Evan and Katelyn AHAHAHAHAHAHHA
I'm surprised Katelyn was shocked that Even spent 7 grand on equipment.
Buying this equipment can only mean this was not the last underwater diy-project.
Yeah seriously. It’s Evan. He’s such an over doer.
Will E&K use it enough for it to be a business expense and tax write off is the question ⁉️
@Evan and Katelyn Give it back!! Evan got a leak!! Ask for a refund!!!
@Evan and Katelyn it was for work ::) tax write off
Thank you for finally doing what I always thought underwater basket weaving was!
@NoiseDay that's what "Pulling yourself up by the bootstraps" is for. But that gets used as something you should do.
Or that the phrase meant trying to do the impossible- you can't weave baskets underwater! You'd drown!
Same here. I only just realized that the weaver doesn't have to be underwater. I thought it was some kind of extremely obscure cultural practice.
As someone who spent 3 years getting a bachelors in history, I appreciate you two finally fulfilling my original degree ambitions.
I don't know how this became a thing, but I'm all for it
I had no idea what underwater basket weaving was but I love watching you guys do just about anything 😭
My dad always used the term “underwater basket weaving” to refer to useless (or almost useless) degrees, so you’re not the only ones who were confused when other people didn’t understand!
@KawaiiAria Umia Real supportive your family there bud.
wait actually
yeah I've heard this term a lot
my family told me my ceramics degree was just one step up from an underwater basket weaving degree. I asked them where I could major in that!
I grew up with this saying but it was my mom who said it.
I have never heard of underwater backet weaving so I was taking the video at 100% face value until you explained what it meant 😭
All you guys needed to buy was a couple air buddies for air.. it’s like a floating air tank that works awesome. Way cheaper and easily maneuverable.
I've known what underwater basket weaving is since I as like 10 year old. I thought this was very common!
am i the only one imagining the neighbours the whole video? like "how do you get it so upright? is it your thigs?......its my thighs and my crotch" brooo the neighbours mustv had a fun day listening XD
The presentation of diplomas was flawless. You guys do a great job with all the video skits and editing shenanigans.
Ok I must comment ya'll are the cutest couple of all social media in my opinion I love ya'lls videos and I hope you never stop making them!!!!
I've never heard the term before and until you explained it I was just happy to go along with it as yet another quirky, overly complicated challenge that E&K thought up for themselves. ;)
Considering that these are the first baskets you ever made and you did it underwater, I think they're pretty damn great! Of course, my approval is meaningless; what did Joob think? I'm pretty sure she's going to fit, but would she deign to sit?
Evan's "seven thousand dollars" sounded so chaotic and katelyns "NO" was so funny
this is the first time i heard this phrase, actually, but i wasnt surprised yall woulda just found this to be a fun activity to do LOL
Katelyn's basket would definitely make a good makeshift nest for my chickens! :]
evan making a little smiley face out of the mark he made on the table is LITERALLY a happy accident, I love it
I lived in Hawaii for around 15 years… I had a local woman show me how to weave baskets! Everything you need is free and it’s fun! We would pre soak the fronds for a few hours to a few days and we put a fabric softener in the water! A neat trick to better soften yet not weakening the fronds! I loved it so much !!!
I want so much underwater content now. I fully EXPECT more crafts underwater now.
@Tiny Star pretty sure that was rented and Evan bought these but I could have misunderstood!
Underwater resin
@Tiny Star we don’t have to hold our breath, their $7,000 underwater equipment makes it so that you don’t have to!
Don't hold your breath. They did a full live underwater stream on twitch a year or 2 ago. I thought this was the same gear they already owned...
I mean, 7k+ equipment, I hope they do more, gotta make their moneys worth in videos
katelyn saying "nice" to the huge leak in evan's air hose made me laugh so much omg
Hello Evan and Katelyn. I have a question. So you have made a Tensegrity Table, but what about a hour glass Table made from Resin? 🤔🧐🤨⌛⏳
For an underwater robotics competition I once had to construct baskets underwater. With your gear it would have been so much easier!
Love it! I work at a college and say this all the time…I’m a boomer lol
Aha - as a Brit, I’d never heard that phrase and just assumed it was a regulation random idea of yours! We say “Mickey Mouse degree”
According to Mr. Black, the first step in learning how to weave baskets underwater is to learn how to breathe underwater. 🤔
🦋I was laughing! I was holding my breath! I was watching every move of this basket weaving video! It had danger! It had comedy! It had romance! It had me guessing and feeling them good vibes! Funny, perilous and informative! Perfect combination for Friday! Thanks, guys! I’m sending y’all big ‘ol southern hugs🦋
Full face mask snorkel -- am I a joke to you? 😂
Finally watched… and found a fellow sinker!!! 😂
i was born in 2000 and i’ve also heard “underwater basket weaving” a million times (: not sure if it’s relevant but im from the south too (ga) so maybe it’s more of a regional thing?
I love that y'all troubleshot all the execution of it. I would have gave up on trying to breath underwater and just tried keeping the reeds submerged and working with just my hands underwater. I feel like this could be a fun attrition someplace and a way to sell expensive baskets. Y'all are champs slugging through this. The baskets look great.
Thought you might have been used to doing an underwater challenge , you did a live underwater, granted it was quite a while ago
I'm looking forward to all the underwater content we're going to get in the future (^.^)
@Lacy Taylor It's a business expense, plus they'll earn it back in no time anyway.
Like after the underwater stream they did? Maybe I've been missing all that underwater content since I'm not on Twitch...
@Lacy Taylor they got a discount 🤓
🤣
Can you imagine spending 7k for a single video
I couldn't even wait more than 5 minutes to comment.
Evan's very assured response to Katelynn's question "Are we ever going to use this again? Why didn't we just rent equipment?" Was just simply so satisfying (as a thrifty shopper, myself) "Because I got a discount"
I only have 2 thumbs, but I give you ALL the thumbs up, sir!
I would unironically watch an entire Evan and Katelyn Hallmark-esque Holiday movie lol 🎥 🍿
It seems like a classic “big city-small town” holiday romcom at first, until you get to the underwater basket weaving subplot… 🌊🧺
Truly, a work of art. 👍
Loved this! I used to do presentations and a part of it was to encourage the audience to go back to school. My attempt at being humorous was to say "except underwater basket weaving". And Jubes especially!
I bet you neighbors are so fascinated with yall!!!
Their videos are the definition of “ Worth the wait”
@GIMME true! For the amount they spend in time and money, they be working FAST!
And the nice thing is that they don’t even take to long
add it to the dictionary
@Evan and Katelyn your videos are the best!!
so glad you enjoy them, thank you!
As a person who’s first language is not English, I was very confused as to why you were doing such a weird and random thing like that… 😂😂😂
Oh man, I’m only 5 minutes into the video and y’all have already helped me with a project! I have been looking for “brass threaded inserts” but had no idea what they were called. Thank you!
I need a whole series of underwater tasks, now.
I literally watch every single one of your videos, no matter the topic. I just trust that it’s going to be good because you’re one ones who made it.
This took me way back to my time at Reed College in Portland, OR during the early ’90s, as I think that Reed College might have formed the origin of the phrase Underwater Basket Weaving, which was taught in the college swimming pool. I love watching you both interact! There’s clearly so much love between you both and it makes for some top quality content
So I guess we're going to be seeing a LOT more underwater challenge videos from E&K for the next year or so, eh?

I found your channel from Alec Steele and after that I watching all your video 🤗🤗
Just incredible! I've always loved the term "underwater basket weaving" so I'm glad to see it's not completely fake! 😆
Evan going "We had a discount" is literally me today, defending my Black Friday purchases to my husband 🤣
me at the after halloween sales every year
Same tho.
Was about to write that. Not the husband part, though.
I think this is my favorite video of you this year
Please, please do a part two, this was amazing 😂
Your videos are quite literally the definition of "trust the process"
@The Rabbitmancer yeahhh
They're also the definition of "I can't believe this wasn't clickbait."
ikr
lol YES
If it helps, I think that the floating thing might be more due to panic. I used to have the same problem (and I still do sometimes), because I tend to overthink the floating aspect, so when I'd try, I'd unintentionally panic, and I'd start to sink. Also, you guys are the only ones that I sit through sponsor segments for. I adore them!
It makes me so happy that they literally did this. Also, I’m old too, I totally knew the phrase.

Basket weaving is way to improve hand/wrist/finger strength & dexterity.
I had to do the basket weaving for my degree in Occtherapy as well XD I don`t think that will ever stop being a thing for the degree
Yeah I got my degree for occupational therapy in 2016 and we still do basket weaving!
I wish this video was two hours long I need more. More explanation, more commentary, more problem solving, and obviously more basket weaving. More
I'm older so I've heard this term regularly- totally love it that you really did it! Loved the graduation ceremony and the Hallmark ad. 😆❤
We had a bunch of these in my house growing up! I always wondered how they were made!
As an actual scuba diver, a LOT of this video was hard to watch
Love that the diving audio was coming out of speakers 😂
Evan: "I'm doing it with my thighs, and my crotch"
The neighbours: 😨
@MouseMaster they are emojis that you get for subcribing to a membership on their channel for a monthly fee, there are other perks, but I don't remember all of them.
@Evan and Katelyn where did you get those emojis? Do you have a special button on your screen or somthingm?
Under water love would be a good soundtrack
That whole segment was no context gold
@Evan and Katelyn It's not that type of channel!
I can still hear my mom, "I don't care if you get a degree in underwater basket weaving, you're getting some sort of a degree!"
This is the reason I watch you two!! Wholesome, amazing and crazy videos! I love you guys!
I love you two. I love the advertisements, the encouragement of each other and the sheer silliness you emit. Never change ❤
LOVE this! Great job on every moment!
This is such a departure from your normal content, and I love it!
Banger vid as always y'all
As some one who has earned and then taught the Basketry merit badge, this was very entertaining xD
Y'all come up with the most unique video ideas. I just love them so much!
