This movie was way ahead of its time. The story and world work really well together, and the actors do a fantastic job. The creature designs are awesome and portrayed in a great way. The actor who plays Dracula does a great job. Hugh Jackman is amazing as Van helsing and really brings the character to life. Best part is when Van Helsing turns into a werewolf with how the beast is beneath his skin and falls off during the transformation

Seeing a fierce and savage/sadistic werewolf overpowering a powerful vampire like Drac is really a badass and awesome thing that you rarely see in most cinemas nowadays. And it is natural though... Lycans (Werewolves and Blood Wolves) are natural enemies of Vampires.

    • Ez-8
      Ez-8 Month ago

@J Heart Note if they can have a vamp walking around in the daylight suntanning the can change the moon thing. If it was me i would only fair as they keep giving vamps more and more ability as were werewolfs get less and less in almost every movie they make.

    • Ez-8

@KCX is a joke and made werewolfs hairless rats living in sewers and puke pretty vampires are in so called high society living organized life.

    • ReaverRogue
      ReaverRogue Month ago

@Fellico Jelisar Rivera ? What folklore are you referring to there specifically? It is absolutely untrue that all werewolves are witches. There are several examples across multiple cultures that contradict this.
Additionally, the full moon is pure Hollywood. Some cultures have myths about laying naked with the moon shining on your face, for example, but the transformative effects of the full moon aren't really found anywhere before 1941.

    • Fellico Jelisar Rivera
      Fellico Jelisar Rivera Month ago

@ReaverRogue IN FACT, according to actual folklore, Werewolves *Become Vampires* when they die. This is because all werewolves are technically witches - the idea that werewolves are some kind of disease or curse is a more modern invention. Actual Folkloric Werewolves are witches, who use ointments and animal skins to turn into werewolves, usually during a specific time period, like the full moon.
Witches, and by extension, werewolves, become vampires upon death due to all the black magic they deal with in life. (Vampires are actually closer to blood drinking zombies and ghosts than the bat themed supermen modern fantasy portrays them as)

It was a magnificent movie overall, especially the CGI for it's time, and somehow, similarly to the mummy they did an excellent job of combining horror, commedy and adventure !
I believe its only real weaknesses are a few idiotic plot decisions like having Dracula only killable by Werewolf's bite and his children being bound to him permanently, I get it its like fantasy but that's just a bit weird for me !
Also : Anna deserved a better end : she was both a beautifull and strong female character ! We wouldn't have the brief sequence at 7:30 but still to this day I felt quiet bad for her after all the shit she went through !

Okay, the most awesome realization that the only thing Count Dracula is afraid of that can kill him is a Werewolf, and how this straight up came into fruition with Van Helsing becoming that Werewolf was pretty badass, these guys straight up re-imagined the monsters and it was just beautiful especially how brutal a werewolf can be...
And then 07:31, damn that was a beautiful shot, sad as it was...

The guy who directed the movie did have plans for a TV show to which Hugh Jackman would have come back as the Van Helsing character but the reason why the show never went ahead was because they wanted to do the show in Romania, but it was too expensive for their budget so in the end it was cancelled. Stephen Sommers, the Van Helsing director, even had written scripts for several episodes of the cancelled TV show.

And then when he get his powers back, he attacks Dracula with everything to finish him quickly, bcuz now he knows that he don't have time to waste and he was lucky that Vlad likes to talk a lot, bcuz if dracula was serious, it would have all ended for him in that instant without powers.

Love the creature designs especially when you compare them to others
The only thing I don’t like about the fight was Dracula was to defensive and Van Helsing werewolf wasn’t in my opinion full beast mode
Imagine the werewolf in full berserker rage ripping him apart with claws and fangs not just a single bite a couple scratches a broken wing and a choke

Probably my favorite designs and fight between a werewolf and vampire. Also, never realized how many times Dracula ripped through his own clothes during transformation just to turn back into his human form with his clothes back on. Lol.
