Well - on this particular subject the German language is pretty accurate:
      der Penis (male), der Hoden
die Vagina (female), die Brust, die Klitoris, Schamlippen
One exception that comes to mind is "die Prostata" 😋

I know 6 languages (some just basics, some fluent) and I just *have* to give an example here.
      The word egg.
      English: Egg
      French: œf
      Turkish: yumurta
      Japanese: tamago
      German: Ei
German words aren't actually that long. The only thing is that you can just add words at the end of other words to make new words. Jokes are funny but this one gets old and also was never funny to begin with.

German words are just combination of short ones without spaces in between.
They're rarely invented new words, just combining the already existing ones.

@Ela Explorer That's not "wrong". Grammatical gender has absolutely nothing to do with masculine or feminine anthropomorphic qualities. It just changes the way verbs and adjectives are used around that word. I guess it's something only people who speak a gendered language natively would understand; it's not at all weird for me because I grew up speaking Marathi.

Q for the Romance language native speakers: what are your thoughts when someone gets the gendering of something wrong? Does it just sound ‘wrong’/unnatural but you still know exactly what they’ve talking about & the conversation continues uninterrupted? Or does clarification normally happen before conversation continues? Or something else entirely? (I’m aware the answer might be different for different languages/words etc.)

    • Anaurus
      Anaurus 2 months ago +7

    • Vayne Saliegor
      Vayne Saliegor 2 months ago

@Eterky Je pense que c'est juste le fait que toutes les autres consoles soient des "une" qui fait que. Je n'ai pas de contre exemple qui me vienne sur le moment.

    • Quantic Blob
      Quantic Blob 2 months ago

    • Krankar Volund
      Krankar Volund 2 months ago

@Eterky En vrai, je pense que c'est surtout lié à l'étymologie, beaucoup des mots viennent du latin, qui était déjà une langue genrée, et du grec, qui l'est aussi ^^
A la limite, y'a les mots neutres en latin qu'on a probablement accordé au feeling, avec une préférence pour le masculin. Genre utérus était neutre, hop masculin XD

The e at the end of most word are not feminine grammatically relative in french. But most adjectif related to a feminin noun get a e at the end. So the only logical reason of why masculin or feminin is just that its sound better. No other rules sorry

This language 'quirk' is very interesting. I tried to do some quick research once before teaching a class of nine-year-olds, so I'd have an answer as to why clothes have 'genders'. From what I could find out, it comes from a language a really, really long time ago where things were split into two categories - possibly 'alive' and 'not alive' (but we don't know for sure). As time progressed, the meanings of these categories were lost and then relabelled as 'masculine' and 'feminine', even though they originally had nothing to do with gender. That said, once certain languages started thinking about gender in their language, they started more deliberate gendering of some words. I can't remember off the top of my head, but things like keys either being considered slender and dainty and feminine in one language and so given a feminine pronoun in one emerging language, but hard and masculine in another, so being given a masculine pronoun.

French posted a link to this on FML... It was paradoxically both 100% "I agree, your life sucks." and 100% "You deserved it."

In Polish we also have gender for nouns but it's not random like for German and French. There are some rules but I honestly don't remember them, with practice you can just feel what gender a noun has.

Reminds me of something, by this logic, a snail's pronoun should always be "they" in english and "iel" in french 😂🐌
(the blob's too, but it's waaay more complicated lol 😂)

In formal Spanish the names for female and male reproductive systems are gendered the same way, but most of the slang terms switch it, don't know why, I love it
