I never buy brand new tech. I let all the rich people buy it and get the bugs worked out for us poor people first.

    • Keinlieb
      Keinlieb 20 days ago

@Sky Is the limit because if I buy the new tech and it breaks or the new tech completely dies, I can't afford anything else. Think of the HD-DVD vs Blue-Ray battle. I didn't buy any of the new players because I couldn't afford to get it wrong. If I bought the Blue-Ray and it failed, I'd be stuck with tech that I couldn't afford to replace. Think of the Galaxy Fold and accidentally removed the nonexistent screen protector, I wouldn't be able to afford a new phone. I can't afford those mistakes so I let the rich people figure it out before I buy something that is faulty that I won't be able to replace.

Imagine if they didn't peel the protector off and the first gen fold got into the hands of customers. There would be a mass recall. It'd be a PR nightmare.

@FunGames i mean, MKBHD himself said that he often peels off the protective layer from the screen as he got a new phone. See, this is like a habit of some sort in which he always tries to do it, be it a natural habit, an aesthetic to make the video more satisfying or just a staple for all his videos. Of course he would try to do it even forcefully to get it removed. You can this a sort of psychological effect on your brain, where if your door house is usually a pull type, suddenly one day it changes to a push type, you will try as hard as you can you open the door, by pulling it.
Also i dont think its logical for a big tech company to ask MKBHD to rip a phone screen, from another big tech company specifically a product which isnt even a flagship. Also you must be aware of the guys integrity, he won't take money from companies just for the sake of flatteries, if he deems the product as good then he will say it is. I'm sorry man but you saying that Apple paid mkbhd just to rip a phone scream seems flawed and he failed to bring a concrete , not abstract evidence. Why dont Apple just paid him to shit on Samsung? Why went so far just to pay someone to do something so trivial.

Buying a fold phone or any foldable screen device is really a waste of money. I have my Galaxy z fold screen black out resulted merely from the effect of folding and opening. Samsung owe me money.

  • Raana Perry
Raana Perry 3 years ago +1

I wouldnt try to remove unless it had remove tabs or print advising removal. Most tech people or those with 20+ years of consumer electronics experience would recognize this. Folding screen devices are just a bad idea. Electronics that have flex connections or flex screens that move excessively and regularly is just a bad idea.

  • PHeMoX

Samsung didn't rush anything for sure. I think we will have to see how Samsung fixes the fold / film issues, but we shouldn't ignore the user error that is absolutely involved in how it failed.

I'm definitely one of those crazy tech people who like to see the boundaries being pushed as I currently hold the samsung z fold 3. I'm glad they have warnings now as soon as you start up the phone about that screen, and put rubber stoppers around it to stop things getting caught on the lip. I think they still have a good way to go, but their Atleast learning and improving the design to actually be more resilient, and I'm excited to see what they do to the fold 5 to make it even better and more reliable, with dust protection added to their water resistance, less crease, stronger screen so nail don't damage it, and the best hardware inside the phone. It's an exciting future for sure with foldables

  • Griffin Paquette

If the film is necessary, permanently bond it to the screen and run it up to the edge...
From an engineering perspective this seems like a huge afterthought.

If you can peel it off with your finger then on a years time it’s guaranteed to be falling off itself, or it’s adhesive will become softer. Seems like it may have been added late to the product

    • Colin m
      Colin m 3 years ago

@Cyrsclin At the moment, it's not looking like as big a problem as the exploding phones thing samsung had to deal with. as despite having sold out their current stock, only 5 actual instances have been reported. And so far, not much else other than those 5. Yes, i'm sure that there are plenty more. But even with products that don't have any out of the box issues are going to have people who destroy their phones just by being careless or clumsy.
so it's so far looking pretty good for samsung with their new Fold. it's definitely going a lot better than expected when considering it's the first phone to be released with a folding screen. Things could have been a lot worse.

Very unfortunate especially for the price that u pay for it.

  • Zanshi Kaijin

It just seems weird to peel off a screen protector that is installed by the manufacturer. Equally so to not differentiate between protective film - which is usually placed over any screen as part of the packaging and has a tab to assist in its removal, and a screen protector - an additional layer of either some sort of polymer or glass to presumably help protect said screen.
    But maybe that's just me.

  • CraftyMaelyss
    CraftyMaelyss 3 years ago +11

I'm going to take a guess at to why these phones are being damaged (mainly the screen protectors)
With the adhesive, is it possible it is too strong that by pulling it up, it moves something out of place inside of the phone itself or even snaps or damages and cables or delicate parts inside it?
Also with the 'bumps' on the others, perhaps because of the way it folds open and shut, maybe it caught something small that you wouldn't assume, then by opening the phone, it lodges said item into the phone itself through a design flaw?
(for example during the folding process, perhaps something opens or is exposed long enough for a foreign item to accidentally get pushed inside, move/disturb the internal parts and cause the damage.)
Then again I have 0 experience with building phones, so who knows (though I would LOVE to design and build my own mobile phone, that'd be epic!)

  • Raja Shah

I think 🤔 i know why the Samsung galaxy fold screen keeps flickering is because unlike normal smartphones the screen on these flip phones are very brittle and have transistors that can break because of how much protection their getting. That’s my guess

  • Sol O

I'm excited for the fixed version to come out and may even consider getting one for myself. I get where these Clip-Sharers are coming from but it really wouldn't have crossed my mind to peel off the screen protector, especially if it was a unit provided to demo and show off. I personally was fully aware of the screen protector being permanent but I just can't seem to remember how I got the info, whether it was from the Samsung FSM team or maybe even the event itself. Regardless, I do know that there were reps at Best Buy that were aware of the screen protector before everything that happened due to an internal memo sent out to BBY Mobile reps and I am sure of it because I would get calls all the time asking if the S10s would break if they pulled the screen protector. I just find it silly that us grunts that sell phones were aware of this but the Clip-Sharers that get paid a significantly more amount of money to showcase all these phones didn't get this same information. I wanna give Samsung the benefit of doubt because a part of me just doesn't want to believe these experts were not given that information. Regardless, seeing everyone not sold on the Galaxy Fold or Foldable phones in general is completely unsurprising. I am 100% sure that when Apple comes out with there's, everyone will be elated with foldable phones. You put a Apple Logo on a pile of shit and people will buy it. I just don't see how having a small phone convert to a significantly larger display is un-appealing. You get the best of both worlds and it's a "stupid idea". I feel bad for these mobile companies that have to try to sell an obvious innovation in tech that is actually beneficial to a bunch of people that can't even see that. Looking forward to how this all develops.

Galaxy Fold has engineering design flaws/disadvantages (internal fold has more curvature thus causing more stress and the famous "air gap") as well as being more expensive (one extra screen), especially while compared to Huawei Mate X. This is obviously a rushed product.
However, unless the price goes significantly (at least half) down for both Mate X and Galaxy fold, it will only be reserved for top 0.1% or the ones really have money to burn. Also, these foldables cannot be a better tablet (at least for the strange aspect ratio) or a better phone and cost more. What is the point?

Geez, you'd think Samsung would have a huge warning on the box or something>
However, I have only once ordered a phone online. Therefore, I haven't had the need to remove a film when I first get a phone. Since I usually buy them in stores, I always have to buy the protective screen separately.

There had to be a discussion at Samsung which came down to, "Do we allow our competition to release a foldable phone not ready for market (more than ours) and let them put a sour taste in the mouths of consumers possibly destroying the consumers conception of foldable phones, or do we release that not ready foldable phone which although it may turn people off of foldables, it will be better than what our competition can put out now and we can then piggy back off of the failure and release the next iteration on the notion that we learned from our failure."

I just think it has something to do with the magnets . Because the magnetic force is so strong it collects so much magnetic energy from other devices or items. There for it is way to powerful for the screen it self. So like he said doesn't matter if you keep the screen protector on or not you're still gonna get a defect of something on the screen. It's like putting magnets on a TV what happens the color doesn't stay in the placement of the screen we're it is supposed to be.

I love the idea of foldable phones, but the tech probably won't be fully developed (and cheap enough for the average consumer) for another 5 or 6 years.
Although I have to say, Huawei designing the screens to face outward is just idiotic. People put their phones in their pockets, handbags, purses and backpacks. You know what else goes in those things? COINS. KEYS. PENS. Other stuff that will *easily* scratch a screen.

So I had an S10e (went and changed it for an S10+) and I had an actual screen protector on it. I saw what looked like a tiny screen protector on it. So I took off the screen protector and began to peel at the layer. After picking a few times, I stopped and went to sleep. The next day, I was looking up something on my phone and saw that it was a built in screen protector and I just kinda "😮😮😮😮😮😮" good thing I stopped picking at it lol. I don't want to get a screen protector but I hate them...but if it will become an issue I think it's best to get the screen protector

Mine broke just after a month but didn't remove the screen protector. No buldge.
It broke along the seam with 1/2 inch- inch long hairline distortions within the seam spreading into crystals breaking.
I did not apply pressure to the screen when closing.
They did not care to inspect mine. I was sent to a 3rd party authorized repair service that denied fixing under warranty because while in their eyes it should be... they had never received payment for any such repair by Samsung due to Samsung denying it falling under warranty later on without reason to why it should be denied.

I honestly think anyone who’s bought one of these is an idiot. That goes treble after the review unit debacle. This has shown the world how poor Samsung are at designing and building hardware. Great component makers, awful when it comes to putting those components together.
That’s not even mentioning the ludicrous price which is enough to buy a smartphone and a few tablets too.

@BillAnt WHY BILL WHY JUST EXACTLY WHY SHOULD THERE HAVE BEEN, WHY DOES THE RETARD ALWAYS NEED A BIG WARNING STICKER???? I THINK IT WOULD BE A BETTER ONUS IF WE PUT THE WARNING STICKERS ON THE RETARDS SO WHEN THEY GO TO BY A DEVICE ANY OUTLET CAN IDENTIFY WHO NOT TO SELL HIG END COMPUTING TECH TO. MY METHOD IS MUCH MORE ECO FRIENDLY THAN URS AS FORTUNATELY I CARE MORE ABOUT THE PLANET AND ITS FUTURE INHABITANTS THAN A FEW IDIOTS TOO LAZY TO READ OR GET AN EDUCATION. ONE WARNING STICKER PER RETARD EQUATES TO SIX TRILLION LESS WARNING STICKERS THAN A WARNING STICKER ON ALL OR EVERY DEVICE, LETS SAY WE NEEDED A STICKER FOR MORE THAN ONE ISSUE, YOUR GONNA START TO FIND IT DIFFICULT FITTING ALL THOSE LABELS ONTO THE DEVICE OH FUK THATS RITE THE INDUSTRY ALREADY SOLVED THAT PROBLEM ITS CALLED -------THE - INSTRUCTIONS------MORON!!!

    • BillAnt
      BillAnt 3 years ago

At the very least there should have been a huge warning sticker right on the screen telling the user Do Not Remove The Protector Film!! Oh well...
This sh*t was totally expected... I even posted about these flip/fold/B.S. phones going bad after some time in the unboxing video, though failure has happened way faster than expected. Oh well back to the true and tried one piece phones. Anything that flips/fold kind of mechanism will fail sooner or later, so they've gotta work it out so that the two panels butt together rather than physically bend.. that's the only way to guarantee any kind of longevity.

I will just stick with the tried and true bar style phone with glass over the display. They last a long time as long as you don't drop them or expose them to anything that would scratch them. It is bad enough Super AMOLED displays (and OLED in general) burn in. The way I see it that is a built in design flaw on its own despite the superior picture quality!! I have had phones with IPS LCDs that never once burned in. I even had one that I set to only turn its display off when I press the power button and left the display on all night. It didn't do so much as the slightest bit of damage to that display!! You try that with any OLED, AMOLED or Super AMOLED display and you WILL RUIN IT!! That is why I prefer LCD instead. Any kind of display with OLED anywhere in its name is made of thousands of very tiny diodes that actually decay very slowly while emitting light and it shows up as burn-in that may be reminiscent of the very early days of computers when monochrome displays where very common. They sometimes had green or amber colored text. I am 44 years old and have actually seen them too, they were very different! If you saw one today it would be a bulky CRT and they were indestructible as long as you don't drop them on the ground. They were made of thick glass and often weighed a lot, if you had a TV in the 80s (especially a big one) you would know exactly what I mean, they were sometimes very heavy!

The film on the S10 *IS* a screen protector. Why else would it have a cut out for the camera? Usually protective film used in packaging would just cover everything. I've been using my S10e for over a month with that film on, it really does work. It even has oleophobic qualities; water just beads, and you can literally shake all the water off the screen. Why go through all the trouble of making a temporary protective film with those qualities?

It's fine guys. The phone only costs $2k. You can just go pick another one up real quick when it breaks.

I'd probably expect them to fix it/put the lip in a place where you can't peel it off.

I bet they can, if they have 2k to spend on a phone they clearly have "fuck you" money in their wallets

With all this being said, I think aesthetically, it is unappealing, especially for the price point. However, it is pretty clever and is a novelty and I hope they learn from these mistakes and produce better versions down the line.

Thousands of people are saying "I told you so", just saying. I really don't know how anyone didn't see this coming. For the foreseeable future, extreme fragility is an inherent flaw of foldable devices, and is one too big for the average consumer to accept. I've said it before and I'll say it again: There is more evidence too support the idea that foldable phones are NOT the future than there is to support the idea that they are, and the failures of the Galaxy Fold have very little to do with that. This is a common sense thing. Plastic is not as durable as glass in a screen. End of story. The idea that so many youtubers actually seemed to think this was the future is really a case study for how objective tech reviewers actually are. And please, stop with the condescending "if you love tech then you have to jump on every impractical gimmick bandwagon" talk. We are too smart for that. I have been subbed to you for a long long time and still like you and your videos but you have gotten less and less objective and in-depth as time goes on and it's disappointing. Please stop treating tech like a religion. You CAN question the practicality of tech trends.

Personally, Folding phones should be left as a niche product for the time being until it transitions as a norm. Right now it's still semi in it's infancy.
