Russia promoting use of nuclear weapons, Nobel-winning journalist says - BBC News

  • Published on Mar 29, 2023 veröffentlicht
  • There are claims that Russia is promoting the use of nuclear weapons, with state propaganda trying to make Russians think a nuclear war is not a bad thing.
Russian journalist and Nobel peace prize laureate, Dmitry Muratov, Russian said state TV channels have been talking about “a nuclear tsunami that would wash away America”.
Mr Muratov said he couldn't rule out President Vladimir Putin pressing the nuclear button.
However, state propaganda portrays Russia as a country of peace, and Ukraine and the West as the aggressors.

As a person from the only country in the history of humankind to have suffered an atomic bombing, I hope that such a tragedy will never happen again.I'm sorry if the translation is wrong.I'm really sorry if I made you uncomfortable.

One should also take into account the difficult terrain on the Finnish borders: unlike the flatlands of Ukraine, which are ideal for tanks, Finland is surrounded by thousands of lakes, hills and dense woods. Further up north, it's mostly just wet bogland, without any roads. The southern coast is way too rocky and shallow for a naval invasion (navy was never the Russians' strong suit, either). This natural barrier made it impossible for Russians to reach major town or cities even in the WW2. As for the common threats about nukes, we are far too close to St. Petersburg: the prevailing wind would carry the fallout to Putin's old stomping grounds.

    • eio clementi

Pretty sure a nuke could turn Finland into the sahara desert.

    • Emerald Forge
Emerald Forge 2 months ago +6

@eio clementi I doubt the Russians would basically destroy St Petersburg without evacuating people first, if at all for Finland

@Emerald Forge it didn't evacuate during a 4 year siege. Russia and Finland are full of nuclear bunkers .

I’m not so sure the younger generation is anti-Putin to the extent he portrayed. Young Russians are much better than the older generations but unfortunately I’ve seen too many videos where they’re either just cozy with the regime or directly support it. Most Russians blindly liked Putin in the 20 years that preceded the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

    • Ananya Raizada

The reason for it is probably that many of them saw Russia's conditions after Soviet disintegration but before Putin became president. And in comparison they are in a much better place right now, that's why they idealize him

If this happens, I want to it to be quick for me.
If I hear on the news that the buttons have been pressed, I will go into the middle of my capital city with a few beers and smokes and wait to be turned into ash in milliseconds.
I won't look at the sky, just chill.
This sounds insane, but if you think of it, what is better: the above or have a slow painful death with terrible suffering which lasts weeks.
    Or just end it quickly.
BTW this is so sad, there are so many good ppl who might die.

    • ADDICTEDJR3
      ADDICTEDJR3 2 months ago +2

There are others out there who think the same. Tired of the threat like we have to do what he says or else. Sorry maybe if I was 10 I would bowl down lol but I'm ready to kick it and drink a beer waiting to see what's next... afterlife or no afterlife.

    • Gellande 2
      Gellande 2 2 months ago +7

      @ADDICTEDJR3 I'm almost 38, in a few months 39 years old.
I have lived enough and my life is mediocre at best. Not drastically good not drastically bad.
I will be sorry for ppl who are like 10 or 18 years old, yes or who achieved a good life.
But if this happens, I will make it quick for me. I want to aviod the horrible suffering. If you do your research, yes there is an afterlife.
I just just go into the city center buy 1-2 packs of smoke and a couple of beers and just wait in the park, listen to some music maybe on my phone with sunglasses on. If I was like 16 years old, I would run for my life, but now, it's acceptable for me to die.
Do I want to die? No.
Am I afraid of death. No.
Do I want to suffer, get burned, go blind, have cancer? No.
Just watch some videos about what happened to ppl in Hiroshima, you will join me in the park.

The sad thing is, even without nuclear war, he's right- Ukraine and Russia's relationship has been harmed permanently. An awful seed has been planted by Putin. Who's to say how many centuries or millenia it could take to heal this enmity. That's not even being hyperbolic. People can choose to forgive but they can't choose to forget.

I remember the Cold War. I remember the troubles in Ireland too. As a Brit living in one of the heaviest IRA areas I remember it well. Basically, we got so tired of getting beaten that we gave up and went for a beer instead. Neither side would back down. And it worked out. I remember Mick the XXX (IRA kingpin) dressing down XXX after he called me an English cXXt. He said to him "You made enough money in London didn't ya?" That shut him up. I knew then that I was a local. Years later I found a message in a plastic Coke bottle from a little girl from Omagh. Both her parents had been killed there. I went to Mick and showed him, not knowing what to do. He said "Leave her be... Best she forgets." And I knew he was right. But it will never leave me. In my heart I wanted to hug her tight.
Nobody wants memories like that. Behave yourselves.

[scene] The bomb falls and there is nothing but incinerating heat for miles. The panic comes to a halt as an earth shattering explosion can be heard everywhere at once followed by utter silence. An entire city reduced to rubble, wasteland and one huge plume of ash and smoke in the centre. No phones, no alarms, no screaming, no sign of life. hours pass before the dust begins to clear, if there was a single soul to whiteness it, they would see a golden silhouette of a man standing at ground zero. @dannycooper8125 is hunched over forward, seemingly unharmed in the centre of the crater. hours pass again before the man stands upright, revealing that he was protecting a young, delicate, child. There is hope after all.
Not even an atom bomb could kill me!

He makes an excellent point: it's far too easy to hate an entire nation (and everyone in it) for the unthinkable acts of cruelty and violence perpetrated by a regime in power; we must remember that many of those Russian soldiers we see in Ukraine were given a choice that goes something like this: fight, get locked up, or get shot.
With choices like these, families to feed, and propaganda bombarding the average Russian citizens at every turn, it's not impossible to somewhat relate to the insane situation that Putin has put his country in.
We would do well to remember all the poor Russian men who weren't able to flee the country in time for what they are: citizens trapped under the oppressive iron curtain of Putin's regime.
However, Slava Ukrayini 🇺🇦 fight them to the very last one.

Putin has only ever suggested using ‘the most powerful weapons at our disposal’ if Russia faced an invasion!
Several times Russia has stated that the use of nuclear weapons is not an option, though these announcements are rarely covered because reports on the threat of using them attracts more viewers.

Moshe Dayan said it best: “The Syrians must understand that the road from Damascus to Jerusalem also leads from Jerusalem to Damascus”. Putin is not stupid. Nuclear war would leave the residents of St Petersburg (his home town) and Moscow living on radioactive turnips.

Well said. I've had such hard time understanding our respons to Russia and how we have dealt with this from the start. I've felt there's no logic, reason or rhyme whatsoever. Though recently I have realized that this approach must come from the conviction that Russia will not hesitate to use nuclear weapons, if that's all that is left for them to use. Under these circumstances it's easier to understand why we choose to throw the Ukrainians (and the Russians too to be fair) under the bus for the sake of one idiot. I still think it's the wrong way to go but it makes a little bit of sense at least.
In the week leading up to this larger invasion last year, I was talking to someone about our best case scenario and came to the conclusion then, that it's probably to take out all the Russian nuclear ramps and subs as soon as possible in one collective strike, hoping we get most of them, and that would probably save most lives. It really sounds insane.

I was in Russia a few weeks before it all kicked off. It all felt insane then for me. Unfortunately a 15 year old Russian ice skater at that time, was getting abuse and laughed at by the entire world for being caught with drugs in her system. And the night before the 24th, my Ukrainian language tutor politely apologised that she felt a little ill that night and wondered if we could have our weekly language lesson another day that week...
