My grandpa has always been obsessed with PVZ1. He plays it everyday and has been playing it for a decade or more. He’s beaten and 100 percented it wayyy too many times to count. I remember playing his minigames on there as a toddler, and he still plays this game daily.
Edit: We just found out he has artery blockages 😭 I’m praying for his soul

Doom shroom doesn't technically hit every lane, it just has a radius of the entire field, which sounds the same, but if you plant it somewhere that isnt the center it moves the hit box accordingly

    • Raphielle
      Raphielle 3 months ago +111

the hitbox is 7x5 so it does hit every lane on non pool levels. Except that its hitbox expands to 7x6 on pool levels. So yeah basically

      BulbasaurRepresent 3 months ago +48

@Raphielle It's not really a hit "box" as much as it is a hit "oval". It's also stronger on the bottom than it is on the top. It's really weird, but when you speedrun the game you kind of just get used to it.

I always preferred melonpults/wintermelons even on lawn/pool levels. Splash damage and slow down effect seems more effective than those peashooters.
And cattails, even one of them can help out at the start of pool levels - also can deal with the occasional 'smart ones' at the back.

  • Darkstone_OFFICIAL_
    Darkstone_OFFICIAL_ 3 months ago +6

Something you forgot to mention when introducing the Doom Shroom is that it actually has a range on it. If you plant it too close to the back or the front then the columns on the other side of the lawn don't get hit or take very little damage from the explosion in general. In my mind it's often best to either place it at the start of a large wave to get rid of a huge number towards the right of the screen or more towards the middle if they've already advanced too far.
I used a Doom Shroom once after a Football Zombie broke through my defenses before I could hypnotize him once when I was first starting the game way back when it first came out and I tried to Doom Shroom him from the far right side but since he was already close to my mowers all it did was knock his helmet off and he proceeded to use my mower anyways because the explosion didn't kill him. It also doesn't one shot things like the Gargantuar because they have enough health to survive at one explosions and then die on the second.

This was fun to watch and well done for getting 15th place. This inspires me to attempt a speedrun some day for pvz. Gloomshrooms make me so anxious though since they are expensive and it is so easy to lose them, I have been watching another Clip-Sharer speedrun the survival levels and the amount of times I have seen him lose Gloomshrooms stresses me out. Too bad about the Column Like You See 'Em minigame though, the RNG breaks that minigame so often, if it doesn't give you enough squash or jalapeno the zombies just annihilate your defenses. I wonder how many people that watched this video have not played the game? I'm curious.

    • denz9ty
      denz9ty 3 months ago +1

Survival speedruns usually dont really matter, and they're like 16 cob setups. Losing gloom is part of the process, saving sun for doom shroom

    • Muchinoi
      Muchinoi 3 months ago +6

Yeah and it's partly why I don't want to try doing my own run (never done a speedrun before) because the rng is frustrating for how much time is wasted if your run is bad. Love the game, childhood favorite, but I'll just avoid doing a run... for now at least.

    • So Vi

@Muchinoi I like to think that rng is there to make the game more casual.

    • Muchinoi
      Muchinoi 3 months ago +5

@So Vi Oh absolutely! It helps the replayability and the casual players, but to the detriment of the noncasuals. It's a good tradeoff though, since the speedrunning community for pvz is very small.

  • Wither Slayer
Wither Slayer 3 months ago +3

Oh my nostalgia! One of my favorite things about PvZ was that there were different minigames for different versions. While I do like the PC minigames, I do prefer the DS ones due to the creativity of some of them. Bomb All Together, Air Raid, Heat Wave, all so creative. Those of you who have played the DS version might notice Homerun Derby is not on that list. That is because it was the bane of my existence and the only DS exclusive that I didn't like.

I'm surprised you went for Gloom Shroom on Last Stand. I've found that a common strategy that always works for me is a line of Gatling Peas, a line of Torchwoods, a line of Tallnuts, and then I supplement the far ends of my land lines with Spikeweeds/rocks as sun allows.
Then again, I haven't timed how long it takes me to get through that level, so the speedrunning community probably knows something I don't.

In Day and Pool levels, it's usually better to plant your Peashooters and variants behind your Sunflowers since Sunflowers are more disposable.

I've also recently started replaying this game... The only zombie apocolypse game where the zombies look funny lol. Genuinely a legendary game!

Yo, you are awesome. I love Plants Versus Zombies and it brought me a bit of nostalgia when I watched this video. I had skipped all of adventure mode and watched the sidequests. This game is just such a masterpeice and always will be.

Kinda feels like eazy is using a new microphone. But nonetheless as other people say, it's a good day when eazy uploads a speedrun!

@Wynn_Gaming possible too, but if I recall from maybe other speedruns he uploads he might say if he isn't feeling well at the point of recording. So I just assume it's a new microphone :D

before i watch i gotta say this is insane, this game is massive on rng, an example is the zombie endless puzzle, i've gotten a row with only sunflowers in the very first wave and i still failed but that's because i was zoning out and just clicking retry over and over again to get a good start.

I know I wrote some guides on PVZ back in the day, almost feel like you used some of my strategies. Really cool to see someone using them. To bad you didn't 100% it :D
Gotta finish that endless mode after all.

Ive been going back to PvZ every so often since I was around 6 (I couldn’t even read back then). So I decided recently to do a deathless run. I’ve been thinking of speed running it just for fun, and of course you did it recently! Weird timing

My dad has started playing PVZ on his phone and I'm really happy. I used to play when I was younger but dropped it because I got frustrated - I absolutely love watching him play it now. He'll let me try the mini games and I got one he thought was impossible so that was a nice bonding moment.
