  • I just got a 45-minute hands-on session with the new Apple Vision Pro and visionOS. I also got to try multiple experiences and it's multitasking for Spatial Computing and I came away floored. Yes, it's $3499 but damn it's unlike anything I've ever experienced with unrivaled video fidelity, a easy and responsive visionOS and so much more.

I haven’t heard anyone this hyped about an Apple product since the first iPhone in 2007. I can’t wait to see where this product line takes us! Stoked to see you this stoked 😁

  • Samantha Munitz
Samantha Munitz 3 months ago +211

Considering it's a first gen product, it's pretty damn impressive. I think its safe to assume that well after a year of its release, the price will go down. Moreover, a lower-end model could be released for the average consumer to afford.

There's some superfuous tech that doesn't need to be in there, like the screen on the front that shows your face.

Ngl I’ve never seen Apple decrease the price of a product.

    • AggiePride4life
      AggiePride4life 3 months ago +10

They may not decrease the price of this actual product, but I can see them using this same chipset a year or two from now and offer this same experience at a cheaper price and call it Vision SE. the Pro model at that point will get even better specs, etc.

    • CautiousX
      CautiousX 3 months ago +6

Lol. Price will never decrease. But a cheaper model will be made a few years down the line

    • AggiePride4life
      AggiePride4life 3 months ago +1

@CautiousX right. That’s pretty much what I was saying. This chipset seems pretty solid so I can see them releasing a cheaper set in 2-3 years with the current chipset while they will come out with a new model for the Pro.

Your energy has hooked me! Only Apple can make people feel this way about a product. Over many decades of bringing the world products never seen before to integrate seamlessly into our lives only to create yet another product that has not only changed our lives for the future, but in the same breath took the future from other tech companies(name any of them) is a testament to the innovators and visionaries of this wonderful company. Thank you again Brian for for continuing passion for tech. You just made my decision to purchase this revolutionary tech far easier.

Watching the keynote, the Vision Pro looked absolutely jaw dropping, AMAZING! Thank you for sharing the WONDER of using it for the first time with us.

I have monocular vision with no depth perception and also sometimes blend colors. I know apple has a commitment to accessibility, and I’m expecting them to port VoiceOver from the iPad to the Vision. The question is: how will it work? That’s the biggest question for me. When I saw them emphasize Zoom and Microsoft Teams, I thought “this is the next step in genuine computing. Not just games. Not just entertainment. Genuinely general purpose computing” like if it wasn’t so dang pricey and does live up to the promise, I could see many people buying this to replace an iPad. There is so much capability here. I mentioned depth perception. What would be cool is an app that fills in the gaps and acts as a blind-friendly GPS with things like, not just “turn 45 degrees to the west in 50 feet”, but also “in front of you is a 6 inch step up, there is a railing to your right at 3 o clock if you need it”, you know? I am super pumped for this.

  • HumNYC
    HumNYC 3 months ago +22

Your excitement is contagious. Throughout the keynote I thought, wait, is this for real? And glad it is! Seeing Meta's vision for it (ex. workspaces) it sounded like it was pretty buggy and the execution wasn't coming to fruition. If they can't do it with all the $ behind it, how will anyone else? And here we are -- as they mentioned, all of the software and hardware from other products (hardware-wise most closely resembling Watch and AirPods Max, but with all of the camera and sensor tech from iPhone) really does come together in this product. The sticker shock is always top of mind, but people said that about Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR, but soon realize that it's for.... the Pros! Developers have a challenge to pump out their apps quickly ("early next year" will be here soon enough), but if they're excited like you are, they will create apps that will enable the platform to be successful.

    • Apple Pi

Hardware-wise, Vision Pro shares the most elements with iPad.
I assume you said Apple Watch and AirPods Max because of the button and the Digital Crown, but remember this thing has M2, the same hardware as Face ID, cameras, two displays etc

Really excited to see your jubilance. I don’t think I can justify the price at this stage unless I can find a use case that goes beyond entertainment value. I do see why it has such a high price tag and I am sure that it will meet their initial sales projections. I am confident that as they get lighter, smaller, longer battery life and reach a critical mass price point this will be massively successful.

He was mostly negative and it was very offputting. Again, you can have an opinion without raining down on the whole parade, this is why we love tech. They will be issues with any product. I totally get the excitement, I'm on my 5th headset now and the PSVR2 is the best I've owned/used thus far and I can only imagine what the Vision Pro experience is like. Obviously my use case for PSVR2 is purely gaming, but i am a developer so I would be very intrigued as to how developing software whilst wearing the Vision Pro would work especially for prolonged use per day.
As for the price, well the Varjo XR-3 is $6,495.00 and i doubt this doesn't offer anywhere near the same experience as the Vision Pro

    • Portal Team

I don't see why not, they already have stereo cameras on most newer iPhones and even lidar scanning on some.

Currently, you cant take a stereoscopic 3D photo on the fly without two lens more separated towards the 60-70 mm distance of human eyes.
LiDAR or having to move the camera or circle the subject like w. current 3D phone scans only works for stationary subjects.
The Vision’s multiple inside and outside cameras already in a spaced, synched, stereoscopic arrangement will instantly capture 3D stills and video.

5 years ago I was introduced to Windows Mixed Reality headsets and that totally blew my mind. Some of the feature demos in Apples presentation was already present with Microsoft's Windows Mixed Reality Portal which supported the whole range of WMR headsets. I recall even creating my own environments clip-share.net/video/V1KZfrRwZK8/video.html
Building applications with Unity and Unreal and pushing that headset to extremes using photogrammetry with Unreal Engine. The views were incredibly immersive and that was with only 1440x1600 pixels per eye.

This is one of the best takes I’ve seen. Watch other reviewers that have tried this on spent more time talking about the price negatively. Or being pessimistic about what they think rather than educating about what the product is.
I’m just reminded of all the groundbreaking products that have come before. And every single time tech reviewers got it wrong. “iPad won’t last, it’s a fad, too heavy”, “$600 iPhone is too expensive”, “iPhone doesn’t have cut and paste… dealbreaker”, “you wouldn’t catch me dead on a subway wearing AirPods”, “Lol people are actually falling for the whole Retina display nonsense”…. I don’t think separate yours traditionally understand disruption. As for the headset, if you don’t work in VR for longer than a day, the headsets could feel heavy.

As we can expect M3 will be much more power efficient than then M2, the future generation of Vision Pro will feature better battery life. And the 12ms latency is roughly equal to 1/83 second. If the display is 80Hz, which the video feeds from the sensors are roughly delayed by one frame. Comparing with a 100" 8K TV, Apple Vision Pro is a lot more affordable while not everyone have a living room can fit a 100" TV. But Apple Vision Pro can do a lot more than a smart TV which you cannot carry with you. A few years later, Vision SE with same specification as the first Vision Pro will be a lot cheaper for the average consumer to get on board.

I’m definitely going to get one. It’s the easiest way to take my office on the road without a load of monitors. And being able to record immersive 3D scenes. I’m going to be doing the van life thing, so this is perfect for that. $3500 seems a lot but then I paid over $4k for my MacBook Pro Max.

    • Apple Pi
Apple Pi 3 months ago +3

Honestly, it’s not even bad value considering you’re getting two 4k OLED displays, essentially an M2 Mac or iPad and what seems like a decent camera system. If you were to buy the displays alone, they could cost you up to $2,000.

    • Kaeden Murphy
Kaeden Murphy 3 months ago +1

You just made an amazing point that I didn’t even think of. I’ve been considering van life, but desk space for the kind of setup that I’d want is expensive, and I’d say a $3500 headset is totally worth saving the space and the monitor. Not to mention, watching movies would be next level as well, never feeling like you’re missing out on having a large TV. This is incredibly exciting. Not to mention, a lot of the other stuff is already extremely exciting regardless of the space available to me haha

    • David T
      David T 3 months ago

@Kaeden Murphy I’m in the middle of converting a 144 Sprinter and space for monitors in that van is really tight. I’ve finally figured out how to get a 42inch monitor installed using a 33 inch extension arm but it’s still going to be limiting compared to the virtual office. The reviews seem to think the 3D cameras are a bit weird but I think being able to share the experience of visiting really cool places with friends & family would be absolutely incredible. If it works as well as they say I think it is totally worth $3500.

Here is my only concern. I plan to preorder because the tech is amazing, but at the price point, very few people will have one. What is the incentive for 3rd party developers to make apps for a device that a thousand or so people will own?

There will be many more people than you realize that will get this. Think about gamers, watching sports (can you imagine the commercials for watching the Super Bowl or 2026 World Cup on this), the Disney experience etc. when it comes to cost, if you want something, you make it happen! You can do Uber part time for a couple of months and afford this. It sounds like a lot of money and it is but it’s affordable. Just look at the excitement from Brian. Once people experience the demo that will be set up at Apple stores, it’s a wrap!

unfortunately sales and content creators will also likely be driven by adult content, but the possibilities are endless and the 1st developers out will benefit immensely. This headset is more versatile and appeals to a wider audience than I thought it would. It’s a sure success

The Meta Quest 3 comes out in September, $500. Wait until Black Friday and get that. Meta already has a good amount of apps made for VR. Apple showed NO VR apps, just virtual 2D screens! They even said to get a PS or Xbox controller for Apple Arcade! The Vision Pro 1.0 is high end, but the value is terrible now. There’s nothing stopping Apple from dropping the price $1,000 right after you buy it. Apple dropped the price of the first iPhone 33% ($600 to $400) a few months after release.

I’m surprised we are not seeing this used tactically. Night vision, thermal imaging 365 sight ability, information, communications, operation instructions, maps, floor plans it just goes on and on. This will be next for the US warrior. This integrated with a ballistic helmet would be a game changer.

It looks like a well manicured ski mask. Best way to describe it.
    Hopefully the experience is good.
I would expect it to be for that price!
Don’t get me wrong, I like Apple products because they do what they say on the tin.
I just feel as though prices are going way too high these days.
I’ll also go off a comment from my mother that Apple products used to be senior friendly and they have changed so much that she is finding it difficult to use.
Bear in mind that she is ahead of me in the fact that she has an iPad mini 6 and an iPhone 8+

It’s great but something I’d like to see in other versions or maybe compatibility with is, haptics. That would really be great. Ps5 has it in their head set and apple does great haptics. Shoot maybe they can even incorporate the Apple Watch haptic feedback.

Don’t concern yourself with whether you sound like an Apple fanboy. You’re just telling us what you experienced and the VP sounds really awesome. Even Apple-haters would still interact with it in the same way you did, Brian, so the experience would be the same. Unfortunately, there are tons of people out there who only want to bash the VP simply because of its cost.
Yeah, it’s pricey but there are many more expensive products and product configurations from Apple that are more expensive than this headset so it’s all relative. This is a major piece of tech that could be a real game changer in the tech world so I think of price is justified regardless of whether I can afford it or not.

  • Tiff 🌻

I’m so happy to see someone else as excited as me. I need to upgrade my iPhone and get an iPad but the Apple Vision Pro looks AMAZING. It was also cheaper than I expected. I thought it was going to be $5k AT LEAST.
The rest of you can keep talking about who did it first and blah blah blah. Apple was going to have to bring a headset into the ecosystem eventually and it’s looking like a damn good one!

I can come up with 2 reasons alone why it will be worth the price tag: One, the ability to "BE" at live sports/concert events will be unlike anyother current headset, this will change the game! Imagine sitting courtside and you can see the under armor logo on Steph's shoes as he runs past you? Or being ring side at a major fighting event? Another reason will be the PHOTO MEMORY option apple already offers. With this device, you will be able to immerse yourself IN YOUR OWN MEMORIES!!!! I don't think people realize how compelling that option is going to be. Basically, you'll be interacting with a digital younger(even if its a day old pic) version of yourself!

  • Scott Martin
Scott Martin 3 months ago +1

I agree that people are probably not going to want to wear a headset to take photos or videos, but I also think that the folks who make the most-used camera in the world might have some notion about the features that are going to show up in those devices in the next couple of years.

I completely feel Brian’s hype, heck I’d probably be the exact same if I got to try it, but for $3500 USD, all I can say is it better have a looong upgrade cycle. I’m not dropping that kind of money only for a better version to come out 2 years later

With an M2, the expectation is that is has so much overhead, that its a product I don't expect to see them refresh for 3 years, maybe even more.
But this won't be a one year refresh, and it doesn't feel like or a 2 year refresh either.

    • Wesley P
      Wesley P 3 months ago

@Brian Tong Fair point. Given it’s 2.5X the cost of my iPhone (which I hold on to for at least 2 years) I would hope to get at least 4 years out of it, if not longer. I’m also curious just how much they could improve upon each passing generation for a product of this category 🤔

I was amazed sold right away for this apple pro vision. I feel like I do need this. The whole time during the presentation with my fingers crossed 🤞 saying to my self please don’t be that expensive please don’t be that expensive? And that was the only disappointment let down the high price $3500 🤑. I do want to buy one one day but will wait first to see the first adopters impressions. If I have to will go into debt to buy one if its really worth it!!

my son got Oculus 2 and it gave me a headache. I tried using it several times and I have the same issue with moving around. beat saber with feet planted was fine for about 15min, but more than that it gave me a headache.
The vision pro is the first AR I'd consider getting for programming, data visualization and productivity.

My timeline for the Vision lineup is:
      2024 - release
2025 - realityOS 2 (fixing some of the teething issues in the software, making everything nicer).
2026 - slightly cheaper Vision Pro 2 with M3/M4 and R2, 3-4 hours of battery life, battery mostly still external but maybe a small internal battery for up to 30 minutes unplugged. This one will likely release in more countries than the US, assuming the original hasn’t previously.
2027 - Vision Pro 3 with M4/M5, R3 and 5 or 6 hours of battery life (battery still external) plus Vision Air which has an A20 + R3 and an internal battery, about 3 hours of battery life, but with the option to add an external battery for even more. I think by this point the Vision Air could be as low as $2,000 and the Vision Pro will stay around $2500-3000.

It does seem amazing what it can do…being able to watch a movie in what seems like the middle of the desert or an a glacier or the moon seems surreal. Or to use it to be in a class or concert, front row. But just like society seems to have gone off a cliff ever since the iPhone/social media was introduced in 2007/08… wondering if this will do the same thing/accelerate it. The screens and social media already distract us from so much real life and in many ways hamper that. Not to mention from the obvious dopamine high/rush Brian has… will boring ol 1080p reality ever be enough then? The current porn epidemic is already messing with people’s dopamine…. Will people be sitting in a decaying house while they retreat to a fantasy world, like the dystopian future Korea in Cloud Atlas. It’s like Peacock’s Brave New World or the movie Surrogates or Lieutenant Barclay’s retreat in the Holodeck… The 3D filming seems especially concerning… imagine watching those recordings of loved ones who have passed (will we retreat to watching and rewatching digital ghosts… like in Netflix’s Maniac or creepy Prime Afterlife or whatever it’s called)? Just like the VR screen distracts from the real life pet in the promotional video role, will we be people be in separate rooms as they already are now with their rectangular screens but with a more potent “anti-social drug/VR headset” if you will, living in a fake world making money for tech giants? Or ignoring the real suffering of people and animals around while we retreat into VR? Seems like an amazing tool/toy but at what cost for the vast majority of people (most people don’t need an iPhone and many of it’s functions, they just want one). There’s a reason why “poor,” technologically less advanced countries and cultures always score higher on happiness/health indexes vs. more developed countries/cultures. Delightful or dystopian?

How was the field of view of the optics? Like do you feel like you're staring at a screen? OR does it take up a large portion of your actual vision? This has been the worst thing so far for me using other headsets.

What was the audio experience like? The speakers aren't around your ears so do they work well? Obviously not noise-canceling but how's the volume levels, and also can others hear you?
