I have read every Reacher book multiple times and these couple of previews show a much better representation of who and what Reacher is. He is a callosal force to be reckoned with, with brutal strength, absolute confidence, and complete tactical efficiency. His insight into situations is sharp with a mix of dry humor, and despite what the post-modern attitude may be, size does truly matter with this character; it is not just a physical description, but an integral part of what makes him WHO he is. Reacher is constantly described by the author and by second party characters' points of view as "a giant," "monstrous," "bigfoot come down from the mountain," with a physique like "a condom stuffed with walnuts," "basketballs for shoulders and biceps," and "hands like supermarket chickens," etc. I like to think of it this way: Tom Cruise is a great actor who got the character's foot in the Hollywood door, but Reacher doesn't need to ACT intimidating; he simply IS intimidation personified. He is what Tough wants to be when it grows up.

@BigL actually I like Tom as Reacher better - it's more believable that the shorter men get picked on . Like who's going to mess with a 6'ft 2 muscle bound 20 something guy ? Only in fake books and movies ..Lol
We are all gay for reacher. I like to visualize as well and have nicknamed him the reacher arounder bc he’s so big that he can give a reach around to any size man.

I'm with the many others commenting here. Tom Cruise did a good job as Reacher. But when I read a couple of the books by Child, I could not envision him as the character described. Alan Ritchson looks and acts EXACTLY as described. I hope they don't screw it up. Looks good so far.
I have enjoyed the series....I am on series 6. U cannot skip.

I just binge watched the entire first season, and I loved it. When I read each of the books, this guy is what I imaged Jack Reacher to be like, NOT Tom Cruise. LOVED IT. I just wanted to add a clarification - I like Tom Cruise, the actor, and I liked the 2 movies that he did as Jack Reacher. I’m just saying the new guy, Alan Ritchman, is the MAN.
I almost did not watch the series because I loved Tom in them both. It was great and I loved the way his mind worked on where the shooter was. He methodically takes you with him through every step to show you why and what happened. I loved the first one more but I never read the books so I had no preconceived thoughts or knowledge about it..I absolutely love this one as well. This guy is great!

@Shawn Baker I watched the 2 Cruise movies before I read any of the Lee Child books, and I liked the movies. After I starting reading the Lee Child novels, I realized that there was a lot of missing character traits in Cruise’s performances. I’m looking forward to season 2 with Ritchman in the lead.

Finally, a Reacher more in line with the books. Cruise wasn't terrible, but his size and look was way off.

Oh god yeah, I like the Cruise films, because I consider them the typical cruise movies, but they shouldn't have been based on the reacher books.
I like the first Jack reacher film. Cruise had the subdued intensity for sure. But I’m enjoying this series. The actor isn’t quite 6’5” but they make it seem so and he has presence. Good show.
I'm definitely stoked for this. I've read many of the books, and this is what reacher is supposed be. A huge force to be reckoned with.
I have read all of the books, Cruise in the role of Reacherwas a definite miscast. I think Prime had got it spot on now.

Like many I've read all the books and I can say that hands down I am happy with this casting. What I've seen so far gives me some hope that this show will be all that I want it to be. Given the breadth of the source material, I hope enough people like it for it to last. Imagine a season per book. That's 28 seasons. Woot. (or 26. I'm including the short stories though so I'll stay with 28)
Strong fight scene - definitely vintage Jack Reacher. People said it was crazy to complain about Tom Cruise's size when he played the character (and to a certain extent, I agree), but this is a good illustration of how the character's size matching how he was written matters. It's just more believable (even though I know you can be small and still be a combat specialist). Anyway, looks good, and I like Ritchson in Titans so I'm excited for this.

High hopes for this series - great to see Reacher played by an actor who is true to Reacher's physique - which is a KEY part of all the books. Counting down to Feb 4th - can't come soon enough.
Halfway thru S1 and this series is so friggin' entertaining! A slew of familiar character actors make this all the more worthwhile to binge!

This is how I always hoped that Reacher would be portrayed one day. that scene was amazing.
Love it. Cruise did a fine job, having a series per novel makes much better sense and that right there was a good representation of that brawl. No red boys show up but that maybe the case in the actual series. I'm really excited for this.

Watched first episode and binge watched till the end. Its amazing. Nowadays action heros are like runaway and stab in the back. But reacher is just badass, I feel safe whenever I see reacher on screen.
And Willa Fitzgerald is so beautiful. I am so sad I have to wait for the next season now.

My wife and I decided to watch the 1st episode at 10 at night, that was a mistake. We could NOT stop watching and had to stop after episode 4 when it was after 2am. My wife was like we have got to get some sleep. LOL. Watched the rest the next day. You cannot "put down" this series once you start it. GREAT Job to all involved.

Like other Reacher fans who have read the books, I'm looking forward to Amazon's production and Alan Ritchson's portrayal. Part of the challenge of bringing Reacher to screen isn't just getting his presence right, but translating the action sequences to video. I couldn't help watching this clip and thinking "that fight lasted way too long for the Reacher in the books" but I understand that his tactical efficiency isn't nearly as entertaining on film. I'm still looking forward to this video version of him and hope it's popular enough for production of a lot more of the canon.
@kempiro Ok, sorry it didn't work for you, it certainly took me back to the fight in the book. I think they did a great job of translating the book fight, considering. Certainly better than the World Wildlife Fund (I'll get my coat).
@5hadowfax Yes, Reacher isn't a god, just terrifically skilled, with zero hesitation. I'd have welcomed some clear dramatic beats demonstrating his being outnumbered and in trouble. Instead, we get this WWF punchathon, where interchangeable thugs take half a dozen kidney rupturing gut punches before they drop. Just needed one of 'em to find a folding chair and smack Reacher in the back to complete the effect.
This fight in the books is absolutely brutal, and there are times where Reacher is at real risk. It was also not over particularly quickly. It certainly wasn't some "Jack deals with college Jocks in the carpark" sort of fight.
I defo think you're right. By the time he was fighting for more than 5 seconds I was thinking the exact same thing "Reacher in the books would've knocked these guys out with one blow already, this should be over:". It's kinda why I like the bar scene in the first film, where Tom literally just destroys those kids in seconds and the bathroom scene where it's pretty much over before it starts once he gets involved.
I think Tom got that quick brutality nailed well. Not sure if it's still gonna be a thing in this series.
Oh, I disagree: surgical brutality, over in seconds would be awesome. This fight was total boiler plate, prison brawl exaggeration. Thud, thud, thud. Too chaotic, opponants interchangeable and way, way too resilient. If the Reacher from the books slammed your head into a metal sink, you would not be getting up.
Finally!! A Reacher that looks like he should! Love these books. Can't wait for the series.
From the previews seen, this first show seems to tack right along with Killing Floor. Plus, the character physically matches my mind's eye of how Child depicts Reacher. I could never reconcile Cruise with what that image. Looking forward to the show!
I always thought Chris Hemsworth would have made a good Jack Reacher. He’s got that confidence and size. But the actor in the series is proving to be very good (I’m only 2 episodes in mind you).
I was so pissed when Cruise got the part..When I watched the film I had a growing admiration of Cruise the actor.
Finally they really did it RIGHT!! My wife and I, both having read all of the books, were so disappointed by the Cruise versions. It was not the same character-NOW this series made the best get better. ALL great actors involved-but SO well done it was as if all the people stepped out of the book.
Well made, great continuity, great and believable characters-we thank them all-real entertainment! Wait another year? dunno if we can!

Loved the first season! Please keep up the good work; we're so in need of a true hero. Classic good vs. evil; it doesn't have to be a complicated plot to keep us interested.
In “Worth Dying For” or “61 Hours” (I can’t remember which) Reacher is described as being the largest man that a woman has ever seen outside of some men in the NFL or pro wrestling. I’ve seen comments saying Alan looks way too muscular. I think he looks the part well, and while he may still be a little shorter than Reacher…he moves and fights pretty well like the book entails. Ritchson definitely looks like he could punch a man so hard in the chest it stops his heart. A feat from the books I hope to see on screen. I was a fan of the way Tom Cruise portrayed Reacher but I’m very excited after seeing this scene for this series.

Tbf they estimate that only 50 joules is required for commotio cordis. Only 1/10th to 1/20th of what you'd expect Reacher to manage.
In the books he is 6ft 5. Not massively in comparison to some athletes but he's described as being well muscled despite never training in a gym. Lee Child named an English rugby player who he sees as physically resembling Reacher. Can't remember who though.
Actually that was from "A Wanted Man"..Reacher was hitchhiking & got picked up by two murderers who'd kidnapped a woman..when the female FBI Agent on the case caught up with Reacher, she made that observation about him being the biggest man she'd seen outside of the NFL...
Best show I've seen in awhile. Wound up watching the whole season a d getting to bed at 0330. It was worth it.
Finally… the Reacher we all deserve.
Completed reading Killing Floor just a week back and Reacher is exactly this. This Fight scene depicted here is memorable even in the book too.

If you'd never read the books, it was possible to enjoy Cruise as Reacher, I think. But man, was he wrong physically and presence-wise. Reacher is a giant and a brute. Sure, he's smart and confident, but his distinguishing characteristic is that he's a self contained force of nature. Cruise never had that. Not much to go on in a 2 minute scene, but Alan Ritchson looks like he does.
And on top of that, he was young Scully! I can't wait.

Watched the first 6 episodes last night and enjoyed them very much. Hits the attitude of the book Reacher while tossing in the sarcasm also evident in the books. Prime has done it again.

In the books, Reacher was once described as having a Physique like a condom stuffed with walnuts. Alan Ritchson could have stepped out of the book, he looks like Reacher is described. Really looking forward to this.

If memory serves, that was from the book where Reacher put on 35lbs of muscle digging swimming pools by hand in the Florida Keys. It was meant to show how ridiculous he looked when he did get in good shape. While I agree with others that state this actor is a little too pretty for the part, I'll still take this over TC movies every day. All you have to do to sell me on that season is show a picture of a shovel in dirt with a Predator level ripped arm grabbing it.

Yes,the novels are truly amazing 👏 I'm a Cruise fan myself yet the former Aquaman (Smallville) has done a superb job portraying Reacher.
I'm a big fan of the Reacher books, and so far I like what I see. It'll get a big thumbs up from me if they portray Reacher's intelligence and resourcefulness as an investigator as well as they capture his brutal efficiency as a fighter. I always pictured Liam Neeson in this role because he's big but also a little worn around the edges, like the Reacher in the books. But this buff young specimen will do as long as his brain equals his brawn.
UPDATE: I really liked the series and thought that Alan Ritchson did a really great job. For me, he looks and feels far more the part than Tom Cruise did in the films. I hope they keep this franchise going!
The sharpness Tom acted in the movies is present in the series.

I have also read every book, many of them 2 or 3 times. The series matched the book very well. It was a pleasant surprise to have Neagley brought in, and now I know how to pronounce her name.
Every book is top notch, I hope they do them all. At least the one where his friends were thrown out of helicopters. I think that was the best one.

I never read the books but according to many fans, this guy was more like the Reacher in the novels. I have to say, he has good moves. The fight looked very well done.
I read Killing Floor honestly one of the best books I have read and with a plot that was just amazing the twist at the end it is just a spectacular book and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys a decent book.
That was one of the best fight scenes I have seen in a while.
The new actor more closely resembles Reacher from the books. The prison scene also includes details from the book (the glasses and eye gouge in fight). Lee Childs's books can not be a two-hour movie. The season long approach is much better! I will subscribe to Prime just to catch this show.
This is going to be fun. I just read the book. I knew who Reacher was, saw the Tom Cruise movie of course. I think I'm going to like this guy more because he fits the book. Perfect timing. I'll be tuned in.

As Child described him, he is a "rock". And I loved how he pushed that eye beyond that socket like the book describes. Gotta loved that detail.

As a businessman I admire that none of the cast will return next season except Reacher.
That keeps production costs minimal which increases the odds the series will last a decade.
Finally, something that looks like it will actually be good. That’s far too rare these days.
I am half way through season one and so far so good, I don’t like the humour so much as I find it takes away any tension there is in a scene.
Richinson is perfect for the role and I would love to see him do a Reacher movie with a bigger budget.
This is what a fight scene is supposed to look like! Disney could take some pointers from Reacher’s fight choreographer.

What Tom Cruise absolutely nailed, IMO, was Reacher's incredible intelligence. What he failed to convey was Reacher as a physical force of nature.
Here the roles appear reversed.
Based on this trailer, I think the acting is more like those movies where the action makes up for poor acting.
I'll still watch it though and will be thrilled to be proven wrong.

Having now watched and thoroughly enjoyed Season 1, I reckon the new Reacher is brilliant... He convinced on the intelligence thing too.
It's hard to judge an entire series of a trailer, especially since the trailer is only really going to show the action sequences. However, don't be fooled into thinking that Alan Ritchson is just another Dwayne Johnson, and think that he is an actor with zero range and who relies only on his muscles and abs to make up for it. If you watch some of his other works, you'll see that he's a very talented actor.
Waht do you expect from a fight scene? Reacher discussing a dissertation? Quoting Sunzi? Why not hold judgment until the series has come out?
He fights like Reacher in the books… hit the biggest one first, use those elbows and head butt anybody dumb enough to get close. Cannot WAIT to see my Reacher come to life.
I agree but I also think the Reacher in the books would have ended that fight sooner. I did like how Cruise fought in the movies, especially that parking lot fight. It was all teed up for an epic battle, but it was like 5 minutes of waiting, and 30 seconds of fighting which seemed about right.

When I saw Tom Cruise's Reacher preferred a fist fight duel and throws down his gun near the end in the first movie, i was shaking my head, remembered thinking, 'that is so not Reacher, the real Reacher would just shoot the bad guys in the back given the chance'.
I wonder if that was in the book? It's made me want to check my copy now.

I'm looking forward to the series. I haven't read any of the books but my brother has read most, if not all and he refuses to watch the Cruise portrayal because he does not meet the physicality of the character. Based on what he's told me of Child's description of Reacher's size and power, I would have cast Jason Mamoa, John Cena, or Dwayne Johnson as the role over Cruise depending on how old the character is supposed to be. But this guys seems to fit the bill.

I read the book this first season based on. In this fight, reacher was kind of vulnerable. But they don't show it so in this scene.
This is the Reacher I see in my head when I read the books. If there’s time maybe a warning, either way you’re going to get fucked up if you proceed.
