“I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service”
    Yeah, That line hits home

  • Cinnamarolllovermoon º· ☾˚

I'm the strong one, I'm not nervous
I'm as tough as the crust of the Earth is
I move mountains, I move churches
And I glow, 'cause I know what my worth is
I don't ask how hard the work is
    Got a rough indestructible surface
Diamonds and platinum, I find 'em, I flatten 'em
I take what I'm handed, I break what's demanded, but
    Under the surface
I feel berserk as a tightrope walker in a three-ring circus
    Under the surface
Was Hercules ever like, "Yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus?"
    Under the surface
I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service
    A flaw or a crack
    The straw in the stack
    That breaks the camel's back
What breaks the camel's back, it's
Pressure, like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa
Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa, oh, oh
Give it to your sister, your sister's older
Give her all the heavy things we can't shoulder
Who am I if I can't run with the ball?
    If I fall to
Pressure like a grip, grip, grip, and it won't let go, whoa
Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa, oh, oh
Give it to your sister, your sister's stronger
See if she can hang on a little longer
Who am I if I can't carry it all?
    If I falter
    Under the surface
I hide my nerves, and it worsens, I worry something is gonna hurt us
    Under the surface
The ship doesn't swerve as it heard how big the iceberg is
    Under the surface
I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this?
    Line up the dominoes
    A light wind blows
You try to stop it tumbling
But on and on it goes
But wait, if I could shake the crushing weight of expectations
Would that free some room up for joy
    Or relaxation, or simple pleasure?
Instead, we measure this growing pressure
    Keeps growing, keep going
    'Cause all we know is
Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa
Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa-oh-oh
Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt, and
See if she can handle every family burden
Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks
    No mistakes, just
Pressure like a grip, grip, grip, and it won't let go, whoa
Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa, oh, oh
Give it to your sister and never wonder
If the same pressure would've pulled you under
Who am I if I don't have what it takes?
    No cracks, no breaks
    No mistakes, no pressure

I didn't like this song at first, and I didn't know why. This has become one of my favorite songs, as the reason for both feelings is I relate all to well (as many of us do, given the comments here lol). As the sister/daughter who is often turned to, especially in times of duress, there are so many lines that i feel to my core in this song. What would happen if *I* falter? I do handle every family burden. I am seen as the indestructible one. I see the iceberg and beg the ship to swerve, but it doesn't, so there I am. But no one seems to realize that I am on that tightrope, constantly steadfast and vigilant, but also forever near the brink of dropping it all. *sigh* "If i could shake the crushing weight of expectations...". I understand, Louisa, I understand.

The fact that in all this craziness going on around her, Luisa still takes a second to fix Mirabel's glasses and gives her a lil smile like "don't worry, I got you". The unconditional love for her little sister in that one action is just amazing

Imagine your family watching you struggle, “buckle and bend” but not help you because ‘you’re the strong one’ of the family, and they just continue to pile on regardless. And they expect you to never falter no matter what. This line cuts deep every time.

I love the sort of sense that each of the “burdens” she’s catching in the song seem to increase in weight. But the _first_ one is the Earth, and it hardly seems a challenge at all. What ends up crushing her, even if for a moment, is the house. She knows she’s strong enough to carry any physical weight, but the burden of the family and the town’s expectations feel overwhelming.

This song hits differently now. My brother took his own life last weekend. He was brilliant, but worked over 80 hours a week, never got enough sleep, and struggled with depression. But he did so much good in so many people's lives, including mine. RIP, big brother.

The whole song is genius, but the shot at 2:36 is just above and beyond:
The camera looking through the gap between Luisa's burden, her muscle, and her stooped expression, as Mirabel looks up in terror at the sheer scale of the weight, with the red spotlight highlighting the danger of buckling... Just wow, this is pure art.
Also, let's take a moment to appreciate the donkeys:

@Julia Golberg That is the unfortunate truth of having such a large cast of potentially interesting characters that you need to develop in only the time of a movie. There just wasn't enough time, they either needed to make the cast smaller or extend the movie into a series that is able to explore and develop everyone better.

I just noticed a detail in the song that makes me love it more.
This is the only song in which everything that happens is a complete fantasy made up in someone's head. Every other song either represents something actually happening or in the case of We Don't Talk About Bruno, shows memories of events that did happen. But in Surface Pressure, Luisa is basically making up a fantasy and I love it because Luisa is supposed to be a stoic and hard working adult, yet these fantasies show she's actually quite childish and creative, but never shows it because she just can't. I always thought Surface Pressure was an odd addition due to being nothing like the other songs in the movie but now I see why and it's genius, as I didn't notice that every other song is still grounded in reality in some way.

Luisa is perhaps my favorite character in any Disney movie - especially because of Surface Pressure. In a lesser movie, Luisa would have been a dumb and good natured giant. Instead Miranda gave her the most sophisticated lyrics in the entire movie, and made her a smart and self conscious woman, who has been taught to please and be of service

I adore how comfortable this singer is in this vocal range, we don’t hear a lot of deep woman’s voices and it’s so interesting to hear. It reminds me of bo burnham’s vocal performance, while he isn’t doing insane runs and hitting whistle notes, he’s adapted it to fit into his voice and music. Same can be said about the voice actress
Edit: so a lot of people are saying that her voice sounds forced… and uhhh I’d just like to specify that that’s LITERALLY Luisa’s entire character??? Being forced to be something she’s not?

I've been singing this song a lot recently. The only time I can actually achieve the tone she has is when I'm holding back tears. It deepens my voice, and higher notes are a small relief from the heavier/swallowed tones, but are still slightly strained/airy. I've been singing it so much so I don't breakdown in the middle of it. 😅

I think one of my favorite things about Louisa's character design is how her physique, voice, mentality, etc, are all a perfect blend of the masculine and feminine. Shes not androgynous by any means, shes clearly defined in both her femininity and masculinity, in every way. Honestly, peak character design.

I totally agree. I thought it was really unique that it shows this pressure from a feminine perspective, but it's for a woman expected to carry the weight of typically male expectations.. it's so relatable, I have never felt more seen by a disney song, even if I'm not buff like her...the metaphor stands to an incredible degree. I absolutely love the blend of characteristics. I am SO happy they created a character so unique and basically archetypically not explored through any other media.

    • JustHannah InWonderland
JustHannah InWonderland 9 days ago +2

@Corzappy honestly I think there isn't a single first child that doesn't feel those lyrics, like every eldest sibling in the world can relate to that struggle of being the one who has to carry all their family issues and their younger siblings well being in some form, while having to keep it together. Luisa is an ingenious depiction of the oldest sibling role in any disfunctional family system no matter what gender that role is assigned to, it's always this. Which is also why her buff character design and her superpower of almost invincible strength are so amazing. She's one of the few characters that manage to be extremely relatable because if you aren't her, you know her.

One detail i noticed that i love. For the domino section she's really struggling to hold it up. But if you look at it there's only one door (Domino) that shes holding. This door however is her "Gift" door.
It yet again enforces how she's bending under the pressure of having her gift and i really appreciate that.

  • Ew I stepped in disrespectful opinions

2:24 I absolutely love the transition from light colours to intense red, and Luisa's voice during this bridge where it's both strong but terrified (especially when she sings "Give it to your sister it doesn't hurt and see if she can handle every family burden") has gotta be my favourite part of the song

There's a sudden vulnerability to her voice; one that is so unlike how she sounds for the rest of the film. It has the same strength, but it's softer, more honest, and builds into something that's almost frustrated in its determination. Serious kudos to Jessica Darrow for it.

As someone who hasn't seen the movie... forget 'We Don't Talk About Bruno', this one easily takes the spot as my favourite song from the movie. Musically I like 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' about the same as 'Surface Pressure', if maybe even more, but the theme and message of this song are so much more powerful in this one. What a banger.

It strikes me so hard when she sings at the beginning that "And I glow 'cause I know what my WORTH is" and then later “I'm pretty sure I'm WORTHLESS if I can't be of service”.
There are so many more great lyrics in this song and the music builds the atmosphere perfectly - I think this is one of my favourite Disney songs.

Luisa reminds me of a burnt out “gifted” kid. She ties her success very closely into her worth as a human. “I’m pretty sure I’m worthless if I can’t be of service.” That exact narrative is pushed on many gifted kids (like Luisa’s gift) but it’s not nurtured properly and the gift begins to overtake them. She thinks her purpose is dependent solely on her gift, which leads to burnout and stress. The pressure from her family is very similar to the pressure that all of us know too well. “It’ll never stop.” We all know how to that feels. “No mistakes.” As she juggles the town. The message of the song and Luisa’s character as a whole are very relatable and well represent what happens when people are praised from a young age for a gift and can’t further develop with the ensuing imposter syndrome.

    • Quickbite2
      Quickbite2 19 days ago

I don't know what you mean necessarily by gifted kid there's many types of that however I loved this song because I was the oldest in the family and yet I was also quote the dumbest or the not as useful one and disabled etc etc which in some ways is true but I was also expected in a family of extremely intelligent healthy I'd say gifted people to be that person that doesn't break I was supposed to with my physical and mental problems pretend as if they didn't exist as if I was neurotypical and I just needed to try harder because I had to set an example for the other children on top of that the family kind of was falling apart for a while and they expected me to take over the reins and be the adult mother was having eating disorders and in and out of the hospital and rehab and dad was going to alcohol for his problems but of course growing up in a extremely Conservative Christian family they didn't show that on the outside and I was also expected to play the part and not crack under the pressure things were kind of insane I did eventually get out of that house many other things happen in that house that were very dark and horrible but I will not bring them up I just wanted to share and say that as one that's part of many communities that are regarded as outcasts the disabled lgbtq and many others I have felt this pressure and I think it's a very good song to demonstrate how people feel when they're trying to mask

I see a lot of this from young athletes who grow out of their talent, jump into a bigger pond, or just have to grow up and not know what else to do with their lives once they don’t compete anymore (me being one of them). Also, yeah, happens with intellect pressure too. Being talented is great and all, but comes with extreme anxiety and guilt. Especially for kids.

@a You'll absolutely get into college, and you'll do great at it. Your parents don't know how much you study, so as parents they have to push you to "study as much as possible", but as you are getting closer to an adult you realize how much you need to study. So don't feel pressured, you'll make it trust me. I used to wonder the same, now I make 6 figures. Just apply yourself to any situation you attempt, oh and every now and then it's worth reading an essay 😁

This is how I feel as a father and husband, just trying to provide for my family and not letting them see the struggles and stress that my job brings, the countless hours I work in a week or even a month to ensure they have a happy and stable home or that at any time we could be desolate if a serious emergency comes up. 😩 they all look to you for reassurance and comfort and forget that sometimes I need that too…. It hurts sometimes knowing I have to keep the brave face and calm demeanor even when I’m freaking out, scared or worried. I don’t want them to have to have those worries especially not so young…. I love being both a husband and father but it’s been a lot of pressure especially the past couple years with this economic situation we are in.

It feels like you are either purposely putting words in people's mouths or do not understand that people can be BOTH helpful in their communities AND be seen and treated as people by those same communities. Interestingly, you saying that it's mostly true that one is worthless if they cannot be of service is exactly exploited by the same people you claim to be against-- those who view themselves as the main character and think everyone's existence is to serve them.
To be clear. Tools are worthless if they cannot be of service. People are not tools. Think about the implications of these prevelent and hurtful ideas you are trying to help perpetuate.

You know, you don't have to burden your family with your problems, you can just let them in on what you're feeling. You don't have to explain what you are struggling with, just let them see you have a hard time. Let them comfort you to the best of their abilities - it may not be much and certainly won't fix any of your issues, but you may find new strength to deal with them, because you are a part of a family.
It's really hard to let anyone know of your insecurities, I know. I'm a man too, and all I've ever heard is to buckle up and stop having emotions. But know that your children are going to look up to you and learn from you how to handle difficult situations. If you teach yourself that you can let your family in your life, they will learn that too.
Best of luck to you and your family!

I am not going to pretend that I know what it's like to be in your situation and deal with such pressure...however, my only advice is don't just keep it in and muscle through it. You need an outlet or you will pop and crack and it will be horrendous. learnt that the hard way and the results were that I learned to speak more about my troubles and seek out help and support from trusted people in my life.

Therapy is easier than ever to get these days, it's not a bad thing to get help from someone outside when you feel you can't (or shouldn't) get help from your family. All in all you don't have to keep it all boiled up inside, families are supposed to prop each other up and support each other. This applies to everyone, not just everyone relying on one person. Even if it's easier that way sometimes, it's never healthy, especially in the long term.

I came to like her character a lot in this film - and I say that as someone who is sick and tired of woke BS, gender politics and companies thinking the only way to make a strong female character is to make her masculine and literally physically powerful - I think it's absurd and I thought that's what they were doing with this based on the trailers - BUT, then I watched on a whim on the plane and realized that's not it at all. First, the strength is a magical gift and not at all something that was "natural" - so I can live with that. Second, Luisa is not presented as this Mary Sue type of character who is just flawless and great at everything like so many in recent films have been - instead, while she has the gift of Hercules-like strength and is given a big build to accentuate that, she's still feminine - she still wears a dress, she still does her hair in a feminine way and still has hips but most importantly, she's not perfect - she has weaknesses and insecurities like a real person. This song really won me over for her.
It also made me realize I might have a thing for powerful-yet-feminine characters. ;) Yeah I said it.

Honestly, Disney should insert sibling relationships in their movies more often. This resonates with a lot of older siblings who always have to be the most responsible for the sake of their family, but at the same time with younger siblings trying to find their place in the world. It's a very strong message for kids and adults at the same time.

    • Matthew Weatherford
Matthew Weatherford 2 days ago +1

One thing I wish they'd do more that this film didn't do is men crying (and not just for laughs). If strong females can get proper representation, then media should teach us that men can cry as much as women and kids.

This song fits pretty well with being in a relationship, especially if you're a dad or mom when you don't communicate your worries to your spouse and try to hide them and just be strong for them. It may seem like a good idea and may seem like the right thing to do but pressure builds until everything breaks; but not only that when you don't share your burdens your spouse tends to also try to do the same thing so you actually burden them more since they feel like they need to carry their burdens without support too. Let each other know your burdens so you can relax and let them out together and support each other in your burdens.

Let's be honest, this song hits hard for every older sibling but there's a very crucial part of the animation that needs to be talked about. When the final chorus starts, you can see Luisa afraid while holding the falling rocks. It's such a powerful and scary thing that perfectly enhances the weight of the lyrics.
Edit: so I'm seeing a lot of people talking about middle siblings and stuff. I'd like to clarify. "Older sibling" does not mean OLDEST sibling. I'm not the oldest, I'm the second of four. I was the middle child for 8 years. For those of you who would like attention for middle or even youngest children.

    • Koda Hansen

I thought she showed more shame during that part. She resents the constant tasks put on her and feels shame at her own feelings because she knows how much she's relied upon.
She turns her head to the side in shame, not fear, all while protecting her younger sister from the falling rocks.
Maybe Mirabel didn't get an active power because Luisa was subconsciously shielding her from the pain and responsibilities it would bring.

This song hits right to my heart! It's really true!! When parents pressure harsh expectations and duties often towards the first born child and when, the child breaks down, no longer be able to be any good. As if all the years of doing what it was consider a favor (or duty), counts only whenever suits. Advice from a burnout person, take care yourself first and foremost, because no-one else will care about you or your needs. Don't be a doormat!

Never noticed the whispering of "pressure" in the chorus. Because you listen to the lyrics, we almost dont notice these whispers, which resemble the pressure luisa feels in her head body and soul like all the time, all day. Makes the song even more impressive.
Using the donkeys as the friends of Luisa is also a reference to working hard. But even these donkeys are afraid of luisa's experiences when she starts singing about the pressure she feels.
    MLManuel is a genius.

She is such a relatable character for today's youth. We always feel the pressure of a society that's been broken for so long and we're expected by older generations to hold it together and to "have a purpose", no matter how heavy it gets, we feel like we can't allow ourselves to fail.
I think it also speaks loud to older siblings in difficult families, they feel they have to take it all on themselves to lighten up and protect their younger siblings.
She is so insanely human even if her gift is the one most commonly related to superheroes (if you think of a common superhero power, you'll probably think about super strength before any other of the gifts)

  • Margaret Schaufele

The looks between these sisters starting at 2:35 is just....... so full of meaning and emotion! The fear plus exhaustion from Luisa as she's revealing how she really feels to Mirabel at the same time protecting her younger sister from being crushed by the weight of her burdens, then the empathy from Mirabel as she sees what Luisa is going through. I feel like in this song and later in What Else Can I Do? with Isabella, Mirabel is actually connecting with her siblings in a way that she hasn't done in a long time or ever. She (and the audience) is seeing who they really are.

She’s still smiling, still fighting, still protecting the whole time.
Also, she says “a light wind blows,” but it is a tornado. Showing how much she withstands.

This is my favorite song in the entire movie, it’s so meaningful and relatable to many people. The stress of being meaningless if you can’t help people or make them happy. This song needs more attention. Not that it doesn’t have any attention, it needs more though.

She's the peacemaker. Maribel is the scapegoat and Isabella is the golden child. Those are their family roles, the other two were established pretty quickly, but her song helped me understand hers

@Jenn R Mirabel too,and it does make sense. It show the cycle will keep repeating until it someone broke it. Bruno went away because he wanted to protect Mirabel for being a scapegoat like him,but being toxic the family the role was just given to another person, aka Mirabel

Even though Mirabel initially resents Isabela's perfection as being a "golden child", in the climactic confrontation with Abuela Alma, Mirabel states that Luisa will never be *strong* enough and Isabela will never be _perfect_ enough. Alma is unwittingly heaping too large a burden on all the Madrigals, and that burden is causing the grandkids to crack, which is symbolized by Casita breaking down and collapsing. Once the family members reconcile they are able to mend their broken home (literally and figuratively), strengthening the family and its miracle.

Pretty much anyone who's an older sibling can relate to this song. Luisa is amazing. Imagine carrying not just the physical weight of the village, but the emotional weight of being the strength of the village. And Luisa has so much dedication that she just keeps serving the village despite the physical manifestations that betray her intentions. But despite all that, she always protects Mirabel every single time, without fail.

I'm the strong one, I'm not nervous
I'm as tough as the crust of the Earth is…
I move mountains, I move churches

“Give it to your sister, your sister is older. Give her the heavy things that you can’t shoulder.” That line is so good, even as the younger sister, the pressure you feel to protect your sibling(s) is so much that you commonly sacrifice your own self care. Including how much strength it takes. “Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks, No mistakes.” That line especially is really just, wow. How she struggles to hold up the Casa but the second Mirabel is under with her, she gains a tiny ounce of strength - just enough to hold it up for her. All the subtle things add so much to it. I love how at the beginning of the song she states how she knows what her worth is, at least on the outside. But as the song progresses, she starts to reveal and even realize how scared she is and how much pressure she puts on herself everyday physically and mentally to protect her family. I really admire how she’s obviously very Masculine or at least fits the social outline of what masculinity is, without sacrificing or leaving behind her feminine side, and how she doesn’t limit herself to one standard. This movie was great and all the differences and the progression of each character really shows how thought-out each character truly is. Disney really stepped up their game, I do wish we could have heard more from the cousins, character and song wise. 10/10 movie

“I’m pretty sure I’m worthless if I can’t be of service” that right there is what most men feel when they are in a situation where they can’t provide like If they get hurt and can’t walk or hurt their back and can’t stand/move what she is singing about is what men are responsible for fixing everything and protecting the family holding the weight of the family on his shoulders

The moment that holds me is after the song is finished, when Mirabel hugs Luisa so tight and tells her she's carrying too much. My brother shoulders the weight that's being held in this song and still looks at me like it's no problem. That's what the stronger one does. And I wish he didn't have to be what I need him to be, and just be who he wants to be

I’m the youngest but the only girl so my family always put the pressure on me to keep the peace, keep the parents from divorce, keep my brothers out of trouble even though I had absolutely no control over any of them. When my brothers had problems, they went to me, not my mom. My mom vented to me too and I just carried the emotional baggage of the entire family. Just absolutely insane expectations till I started cracking. The line “was Hercules ever like yo I don’t want to fight Cerebus” resonates with me the most because I never had a choice. They’d find a way to dump shit on me whether I wanted it or not.
