Retired US Air Force Col. Cedric Leighton maps out the strategies of the Russian and Ukrainian armies as they battle over key positions in eastern Ukraine. #CNN #News
Fun fact. The Abrams and Leopard 2 started life as a German-American joint project - MBT70 - before they scrapped it for technical, cost and requirement reasons. But the tech was used to develop the Leopard 2 and the US later used the general gun. So the two tanks are cousins.
The Bradley has already proven itself against Soviet armor. More T-72s were destroyed by Bradleys during the Gulf War than by Abrams tanks. In the Battle of 73 Easting, the Bradley proved itself more than a match for T-72s and BMPs. The TOW missiles are highly effective against tanks, and the autocannon is highly effective against trucks and BMPs.
@humanitarianclassicide No. Bradleys and Abrams were designed to fight the Soviet military. So they are now literally being prepared to do the job they were designed to do.
US had air superiority, much better trained crews, huge technological advantages and the state of the Iraqi army was miserable, not to mention the T-72's Iraq had were downgraded versions of already downgraded T-72M export versions which were built in 1979 originally. Even the most dogwater tanks Russia uses are T-72B's which are lightyears ahead of the T-72M, neither side has air superiority and Russia has a massive artillery advantage. At the end of the day it all comes down to how the Ukrainians use them.
Air power, and ground forces compliment each other in the battlefield. Would these generals deny that? It’s not a case of Ukraine needing tanks then needing even more stuff. It’s a case of functional proxy war vs. halfassed proxy war.
@John Tynan No matter how we argue here, there will be no big war between the leading countries of the world, everyone has nuclear weapons. Therefore, I propose to end on this positive note.
It is not just about having the tanks. It is about operating them effectively and then comes services and repair. It seems like these tanks will be one-time-use equipment on the battlefield. Imagine bringing Abram tanks to Ukraine’s east front and then take them back to Poland for service and repair. Not to mention that these tanks will get stuck in Ukrainian mud, because they are quite heavy. Eventually, Ukrainians will lose more tanks than they get. There is only one solution and it is for NATO and the US to directly deploy their troops on the battlefield and fight Russia face to face, which they are too scared to do. It will be the beginning of WWIII and the end of civilization on earth. In such an eventually, NATO will lose greatly. Surely, Russia will be totally destroyed but so will every 30 NATO member state.
Actually Bakhmut is a strategic location for one sole reason. A RAILROAD HUB! Kramatorsk, Slovyansk, Lyman, Izyum, Horlivka, Lysychans’k, Donetsk, Lushank are all connected by railroad via bakhmut
@Shar FA.2 they have effectively pinned down 70,000 Russian soldiers while they wait for armour from the west. Which is now arriving, human waves not going to be very effective against Leopard and IFVs.
@ian A trap is when you force the enemy to send all of their reserves they were building up for a counteroffensive into a city thats about to be encircled and has one small road left driving into it. Ukraine has done masterful operations like in the North and Kharkiv, but Bakhmut seems more like a massive blunder every day that goes by.
Given the equipment training timelines stated would translate for this to be a long-term engagement - be interesting to know how Putin envisages this understanding in as much as he'd likely want to take advantage of the situation.

Huge respect to the resilient Ukrainian fighters.. Defending their beloved motherland extremely well despite the harsh winter conditions & lack of weapons & supplies.. Slava Ukraini.. Stay strong Ukraine.
@Hecubus Russia is not fighting Ukraine, its fighting Nato. If this was simply a fight between Russia and Ukraine it would have ended long ago and u know it. Nato is give Ukraine, Financial support, logistical support, military aid and weapons, Intelligence and training. That makes a huge difference in any war. Having said that l do believe Ukraine has the right to defend itself just as Russia has the right to fight for its interests. Lastly l dnt see either Ukraine or Russia winning this war, dialogue is the only solution to ending the war.
I hope that we have been training ukrainian pilots in advance so that they can be deployed with the proper equipment in time for their offensive this spring
@xhago🇦🇱 it may seem alot and I understand why you feel that way, however keep in mind "Roughly 5.9 million Afghans and 9.2 million Iraqis have left their homes since the United States invaded Afghanistan and Iraq in 2001 and 2003" - Washington post "At Least 37 Million People Have Been Displaced by America's War on Terror" - NY times And I'm sure those numbers would have been far higher in neighbouring countries were as supporting as Europe is to the Ukrainians.
@xhago🇦🇱 the birth rate In the west has been dwindling for a decade now, they've been plugging this gap with immigration from Asia and Africa. This is the perfect solution.
@Jerald Kozey what’s happening in Ukraine isn’t our problem. Ukraine doesn’t have any thing of significance, (such as Taiwan, with their chips). We have important issues at home
I think combat drones remotely-controlled by a human with manoeuvres augmented by autonomy should be what Ukraine could used better than piloted fighter jets. The time it takes to train pilots and the cost involved is nullified the instant the plane is taken out with surface-to-air or air-to-air missiles. But if they flew military-grade combat drones then the timeframe for training is less and the operators wouldn't be killed if the drone was shot and destroyed.
only served in the army for 26 months and i learned when you point on a military operation map you id East/West/North and South here we have a general ponting and says this way LOL
God bless and help Ukrain president people and army and countries helping Ukrain fighting for their motherland territories in defence Patriotic brave bravo against the offensive attacks of Russia
@Lawrence bolt I like how you avoided the question talking nonsense instead of trying to provide facts. I'm guessing because the facts show you are wrong.
@Lawrence bolt idk where your getting your numbers but they're wrong. Tell me if they're doing that good why couldn't they take Kiev or after why did they keep losing so much territory or why have they not been able to take Bakmut yet? Kinda odd if they are doing so well that they have to keep giving up land.
Leighton did a decent job - thank you CNN for finally getting someone who knows what he's about. :) Nice point about the M-1's need for maintenance/huge logistics tail. No weapon is any good if it doesn't operate. ;)
The Abrams were merely to get Germany to release the Leopards. Little more. The numbers promised are relatively low in the grand scheme, transport is much more involved and maintenance / logistics is a nightmare. Abrams may simply be the Russian "undertaker" after the Leopards, Bradley's and other AFV's do the job this Spring and Summer.
US tanks: different ammo makes logistics for Ukraine difficult, more complex technology will make training take longer. So US tanks was hast a nice gesture to Germany so that fearful Scholz can calm down a bit.
The Russian General Staff prepared for the offensive of noticeable groups from the Donetsk and Lisichansk directions, readiness also to detect an attack from the south

@Sharky1101 no I didn’t it was another guy I just read it. And he’s not wrong . Russia is firing 10x more missiles. They have much more ammo and equipment. Yo really are lost

After he says that Bakhmut is not strategically important, he contradicts himself. Since, Bakhmut is the gateway to those two last cities in the Donetsk.

The Abrams that will be sent at some indeterminate point in the future (most likely no earlier than the autumn) will be completely stripped of the advanced armor, comms, and targeting systems that makes them effective against modern MBTs. Russian T90s will wreak havoc on any armor that shows its muzzle, especially if driven by a hastily trained Uke team. /Former USMC 0352
Apparently you cannot even understand simple English. The tanks weren't supposed to come in in weeks! He literally says "Spring and Summer". As for the Ukrainian plans, they are the long term plans and not the plans of the last few weeks! In fact the only bit about the short term plans HAS happened as the Ukrainians have held their lines and the Russians have only made small advances. So it isn't the Team Ukraine which is coping here...
I’m curious why do they keep saying what Ukraine and the Russian’s next steps are in the war? I’m guessing both sides are watching the news from western counties. Are they reporting one thing but will they actually do something else? If someone can help me to understand this I would appreciate it!!
The Abrams that are being sent aren't from US stock piles, they are different and being built right now. This is why it will take months, some say maybe a year, to get to Ukraine. If they were real US tanks from our stock piles they would be there sooner with the US superior logistics. And the Leopard 2s are the same ones that were being knocked out in Syria. Send them the Leopard 5s instead and the real American Abrams.
"What the Ukrainians want to do is kick Russia out off that landbridge and target Crimea" He says that like, it's no difficult feat. And of course the pro-Ukrainian host doesn't challenge anything he says.
@Tio Swift yeah it’s fascinating. If memory serves the bomb was armed but didn’t go off due to a malfunction. There are documentaries about it and other nuclear mishaps, there’s been more than you’d want to know lol.
They will get 77 asap but they have a nightmare with training on each of the different tanks and weapon systems. I do like that the US is sending 31. 31 is a prime number which means it’s Indivisible. With Liberty and Justice for All. 😂😂😂
@Niktoinikak The Abrams are already in Poland, same with the Bradleys. You think they going to tell the Russians the date of their arrival, same with the Leopards. On the Polish border already.
Russia has something called integrated air defense systems and that A 10 would be flying scrap metal before it even sniffed the convoy. I know Americans get excited about what you did to Iraq, but Russia is not Iraq.
If those Ukrainian officials are fighting alongside with their people instead of enjoying the beaches in Dubai and Thailand, Ukraine already won the war
@newuser Yes I clearly know the difference between NATO and the EU. The USA is in NATO and not the EU which was the differentiating factor if you didn't notice. Furthermore, the amount of money you have put towards any war and the amount of men you have sacrificed has been miniscule to the amount the Americans have paid
@Marc Lucido Does American education not teach you what the EU is? Have you also forgotten all the billions and hundreds of lives we wasted on your pointless and failed wars in the middle east?
At 2:16 he speaks of attacking Crimea. This is why Crimea wanted to get away. The Ukrainian government had been neglecting and attacking places that were ostensibly a part of Ukraine. Surely this only confirms that we are supporting the wrong side in this conflict. Anyone who continually seeks to escalate a war and destroy the lives of more and more and more people should be held to account for that?
I actually agree with this. You can get 100 GLSDBs for 1 ATACMS missile with a similar range and accuracy. I wonder about their relative susceptibility to air defense though...
Fun fact. The Abrams and Leopard 2 started life as a German-American joint project - MBT70 - before they scrapped it for technical, cost and requirement reasons. But the tech was used to develop the Leopard 2 and the US later used the general gun. So the two tanks are cousins.
@Myke McCormick мы это называем паркетник.
Whats the cost ?
So if the two of them cross paths in Ukraine, are you saying that will be classed as incest?
Itu tidak gratis brooo😆😆😆
How it's going

@Shar FA.2 I doubt any T-72 is "lightyears" ahead of another T-72. It is still an ancient tank design, which is utter rubbish.

More along the lines of it takes months to train crews to operate an Abrahams alone.

Not if railroads get just cut off. Unscrewed and gone.. mined too ofcause.
Bakhmut is important for those named facts but more is that it is the strongest point in the first line of defense.
Given the equipment training timelines stated would translate for this to be a long-term engagement - be interesting to know how Putin envisages this understanding in as much as he'd likely want to take advantage of the situation.
@Roberto Schmitt Tanks and aircraft are exactly what Ukraine needs to defend not only its territory, but the whole of Europe.
The supply of weapons to Ukraine should not be stopped. We must win this ideological war.

When will you interview colonel Douglas McGregor a Tank commander who has actual experience in the theater of battle Field.
@Peter Chenit's great that we have the internet the truth always gets out.

The distance between Kiev and Moscow is 578 miles. Imagine hostile tanks and long range missile being that near Wshington.

120mm diplomacy coming up 💪🇺🇲
For diplomacy in 🇺🇦
And Ukraine should pray that Russia doesn't answer that with some 220mm Diplomacy. the BM-27 Uragan is a serious Tank Killer.
Ukraine Next: We want laser guns and UFOs....
one can always speculate on why it'd take so long to get the tanks there.
@Jane Jones looks like someone's listening to col. Doug
They are now saying new Abrams will be built for Ukraines, instead of what we have now. It will be a downgraded version.
They got to strip the classified armor off the tanks
That's like the Allience VS Mordor Orc army.

Many months is not good, glad the Leopard tanks can get there sooner. Just wish they did this months ago.
Javelins are there in the meantime .
Gotta prepare for the offensive. Gotta keep giving them Javelins and defensive weapons on top of offensive ones.
"What the Ukrainians want to do is kick Russia out off that landbridge and target Crimea" He says that like, it's no difficult feat. And of course the pro-Ukrainian host doesn't challenge anything he says.
321 tanks together with the IFV´s maybe but not 321 MBT´s.
Imagine thinking that a few tanks are going to change the outcome 🤣🤣🤣
I wish Russia may win this war against Ukraine + ( usa , nato, and complete Western world indirectly)
3:06 She almost said "North Carolina". Lmao.
@Nono Brochacho honestly …I don’t want to know anymore 😂 thanks for the info
@Tio Swift yeah it’s fascinating. If memory serves the bomb was armed but didn’t go off due to a malfunction. There are documentaries about it and other nuclear mishaps, there’s been more than you’d want to know lol.
@Nono Brochacho That’s insane and I’ve never heard of that before.
@Tio Swift 1961 Goldsboro B52 crash. The military accidentally dropped one or two nukes in North Carolina. They didn’t go off but they did drop them.
@Nono Brochacho Wut
alright well, interesting. thank you colonel
Giving Ukraine land assets is more imperative than air assets at this time.
Australia moved it Abram's from Darwin in the NT to down south. The Tankies I spoke to said no good in the mud
What happens to stock prices of concerned companies if an Abrams tank is burning in the battlefield
Go Russia......
Angela Merkel: "How much weapons can we give Ukraine so that Russia loses the war?" Circa 2015
Glory to the heroes, Glory to Ukraine. 🇺🇦✌️
They will get 77 asap but they have a nightmare with training on each of the different tanks and weapon systems. I do like that the US is sending 31. 31 is a prime number which means it’s Indivisible. With Liberty and Justice for All. 😂😂😂
31 tanks in 12 months time🤣 it will be over by then.
@ian
Abrams in Poland is not for Ukraine, but for Poland. Poland has a large order in the USA.
@Niktoinikak The Abrams are already in Poland, same with the Bradleys. You think they going to tell the Russians the date of their arrival, same with the Leopards. On the Polish border already.
So a whole NATO can't defeat Russia, a single nation.
If it was Germany saying 'its going to take a while' CCn would allover them non stop just like lastweek
Fun fact: when a leopard hits you, it won’t be fun.
When that bear will maul that leopard to death, it'll be a beauty to see.
Fun fact: when a 9M133 Kornet hits you, it won’t be fun.
Can’t wait for the US to start sending Ukraine some A-10 Warthogs😅
@John Roche Imagine he think it was farmers in Iraq
Russia has something called integrated air defense systems and that A 10 would be flying scrap metal before it even sniffed the convoy. I know Americans get excited about what you did to Iraq, but Russia is not Iraq.
@John Roche that was the perfect time. They where sitting ducks
From a Miltary perspective Ukraines's planning options A surrounding the Russians has advantages
If those Ukrainian officials are fighting alongside with their people instead of enjoying the beaches in Dubai and Thailand, Ukraine already won the war
The people of North Carolina will always stand with Russia!!!!! 3:13
Maybe they’re making a diesel version of the Abrams which is why they ordered them rather than pulling them from existing stock
No. Its the armor.
@Herman ten Klooster I heard that’s only for emergency and not recommended as a regular fuel
The Abrams runs perfectly well on Diesel. Kerosene and Diesel are virtually the same.
Maybe they are holding off to wait out the mud.
That was very interesting.
Glory to the very brave little Ukraine.
@joanna e Actually Ukraine is 1st at 233,090 mi2 (603,5550 km2) and France is 2nd at 213,011 mi2 (549,087 km2).
That's fantastic.
UKR will need 3th at least. tanks. 300 cannot change the situation on battlefields. NATO naivity as follows.
Yay more death and destruction! Good thing you arent there huh?
Why is he on the news showing this? If he knows Russia's strategy, he should be in Ukraine telling Zelensky.
Long range missiles are a must ASAP!
❤Ukrainian ❤
Leopards & Abrams lets go..💪
when you eventually wake up, mark the moment.
I'm sure the Russians are having a good laugh.
We should NOT be sending ATACMS. We should be spamming Ukraine with GLSDBs. They are the superior tool for the job Ukraine has
I actually agree with this. You can get 100 GLSDBs for 1 ATACMS missile with a similar range and accuracy. I wonder about their relative susceptibility to air defense though...
“What’s next in the wishlist?”….. Ukraine treating NATO war stocks like it’s own Amazon wishlist. But for free….
