According to the Wikipedia entry on Kissing A Fool, Michael wrote the song to express his concerns that he was not suitable material as a romantic partner because of the 'baggage' (and fame) that he came with; he also apparently recorded the vocal in a single take -- this was also a hallmark of Aretha Franklin.
What is apparent is that his interpretation of the song makes it a torch-song. :-)
