Absolutely crushed it to pieces!
Whether Spaven featuring Rakei or vice versa, one thing's for sure - the combination of those two is pure magic every damn time.
those hits with snare, surprise me every time
Samuel Maney yes is snare is everything
Richard Spaven + Jordan Rakei = Pure Nirvana.
The groove on this song is something else.
Not usually a fan of dark dry cymbals but in this setting its perfect
I'm crying... Richard your drumming is something special.
Grandisima originalidad y musicalidad de este baterista .
It's so beautiful that it kind of makes me cry, laugh, dance, wander all at the same time... Massive Respect!! 🙏
Spaven reminds me of my created character on "Skate".
Easily in my top 5 fav. drummers. I can listen to him all day.
Spaven, you sir, are on a different level. Such a beast. IMO, no one has the subtly, elegance, precision, and groove that play so well together like you do. Thanks for putting out such great music!
My goodness, this is on another level. Best Spaven track since 'The Self', hands down!
That mixing is glorious!
Richard is awesome!
The scene + the music + the performance = a piece of Art
I need MORE music like this. I dig the post jazz instrumental stuff mostly, but these vocals were super nice. Limousine, King Capisce and Matthew Shipp are all in a playlist together, now with this. What else should I hit up?
What is the most amazing in this groove is the placement of the kick drum . Quite hard to reproduce actually
I just tried and couldn’t so ur right 😂😂 great groove
Bravo Spotify for sending this track across my consciousness - wonderfully rhythmic and enveloping, melodic and dreamy. And of course the performance on the kit is tight!
Just in case someone else was wondering about the time signature/where the "1" is etc (like I was), here's my take on it: Tempo = 160, so the HH figure is in 16ths (if you feel it in 80, which is more natural (i guess), the HH figure is in 32nds obviously). Anyway, the song is MOSTLY in 4/4 except a few bars of 3/4 and 5/4 or (according to your taste) pushes of 1 beat to the left/to the right. Around 1:13, there's one bar of 3/4 leading into a new "1" on the crash hit, at 1:37 there's one bar of 5/4 (he's landing on the "3" of that bar with the break, the next crash is the new "1"). The same thing happens again around 2:24, one bar of 3/4 leading into the new "1" one the crash hit. Then at 2:38 there's the same break as before on "3", only this time it's in a bar of 4/4 (not 5/4 as before). The rest of the tune stays in 4/4. Clues for hearing the "1": use headphones and listen for the guitar chords on the right. Those are on "1". Another thing he does frequently is playing the bass drum on "4" and the "d" of 4, anticipating a bass drum hit on "1" which never follows. The main pattern (at least in the beginning) is centered around a two bar phrase (again, feeling the pulse at 160bpm) with the main snare hit on the "2" of the second bar and the bass drum on "4" and the "d" of 4 as I said before. Hope this helps!
It's all in 4/4, some of the fills just have odd subdivisions but the count is the same
Ive notated the beat.
The stick pattern is rlR
Then, the snare falls on the 3 of the second bar.
Jan Hesmert he said at the uk drum show that it’s much more simple then that, the HH accents in the patterns come on off beats in the bar, and the one is on on of the beats before hand and it stays there as it’s all in 4, he just messes around with his placements
Once again, I have to thank Richard Spaven for keeping me grounded. From my darkened apartment in a shitty town, thanks Rich.
@Guus Verschuuren I am doing ok. There is a lot of uncertainty in the offing, but I do not think it is a bad thing. I think it will catalyse worthwhile changes, though I will have to make some difficult decisions. But almost all of us face adversity in many ways - I'm sure you have your fair share of problems too.
I hope this message finds you well. Thanks for checking in. Take care of yourself my friend.
@Eleutherarch this was very sweet to read. 3 years later, i’m wondering how both of you are doing? Beautiful how music once again connects
@Tommy Light We have some overlapping experiences, that much is certain. You are most definitely not alone. There is not much that I can tell you to make it easier. I'd just be handing out platitudes.
You are doing the right things. You will not be trapped forever and nor will I, providing we play our cards correctly. In the meantime, isolation can be a blessing providing your mind is healthy. But with other mental dispositions, it can provide fertile soil for oppressive weeds to grow and choke you. Remain alert.
Expressing solidarity with a stranger can be life-changing for them and cathartic for yourself. That is a trait to nurture. I'm glad you wrote me back. And although we do not know one another, remember that I hope the very best for you. It'll be fine. It will.
Cheers,
R
I think I can relate to how you feel. At the same time this grounds me it inspires me and gives me hope in a way, for the future. Currently in my early 20s with no job, no girlfriend, living with parents, and going to community college in order to get a decent job and get the hell out of where I'm at. In a very small town isolated from everyone except for my toxic immediate family.
I don't know why I'm saying all this. But it just feels like I'm not alone in this situation, that there are definitely others struggling mentally because they are stuck in a situation that they can't control, and are fighting for an escape.
Wow!
Probably one of my favorite tracks in the last 2 years
Just saw him live. Legend
This is so beautiful and calming.
This is so beautiful, beyond expression in words. I wish could pour the tender palette of emotions this track got me through... I guess I have to check out the album now. Amazing performance, thank you 🙏
"How dry do you want your cymbals?"
"Yes."
I come back and look at this comment. Just makes me laugh 😂
Just that dry.
Haven't heard a song that gets me back on the kit quite like this one 🙏
This is excellent. It's hard to believe that it's mostly drums and vocals.
That was 🔥 from 0:00-4:39 period.
First Drumming Video where I immediately wanna buy all cymbals! And I don't even play drums regularly... Extremely tasty, Richard did it again!
such a nasty groove, his subtlety is unmatched
@Burning-Geordie When something's too good, Nasty changes its meaning to something super positive!! No kiddin
Positively puerile...
Filthy, disgusting, nasty, and gorgeous.
@Burning-Geordie Disgusting, perhaps.
it's anything but 'nasty' dude. Gorgeous. maybe?
Amazing Track and drumming .
Richard Spaven, the Best drummer in the whole world. 😀
beautiful track, this is a new wave of music
The perfection of taste and badassery.
The drum maybe old but those new beats are priceless !!... I take me high hat off to the drummer.
I saw this band live in London doing this (end 2019) and it was just amazing.
One of a kind groove
Everybody knows that Richard is a drummer with the style of his own, right? Yet everytime I come acoss a new vid of his, it'll always be so refreshing and inspiring!
HOW THE HELL DOES HE DO THAT??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a die hard R&B fan, this song is so calming and chilled. I think I have found a new artist. Thank you to my neighbor for putting me on this song and this artist
Every time I see you or I hear you play, you touch my heart
I seriously have this song in my head for days straight, good thing it's absolutely fucking fantastic
Excelente recomendado mostrisimo el tema.. brutalisimo el groove...

Thanks Meinl for delivering very good audio quality all the time
Straight mesmerizing.
Очень качественная работа
Awesome! Great feel! What snare is he using?
Som do caralho, very good.
This is so awesome man
It’s just sick! Love it!
Incredible how hard-edged and restless tranquility can be - thanks to drums only
That snare is nice.
AMAZING !!!!!
Brilliant in every aspect! Congrats!
Clean and understated.
Super solid and perfection from any optical position!!
What a player
Well, dry cymbals are a testament to being raw, and not overpowering vocals. You can do whatever you want, hit as hard as you want, but it keeps the drummer in check, which really gives him focus to play out the beat.
Michael Jayification - Very well put, I agree!
freakin' love those cymbals!!!!
Another level Rich. I WILL see you live one day!
Amazing tune.
I love his sound
amazing, as always!
its so beautiful. so musical....

O.M.G... i watched Richard perform this at The UK Drum Show in Manchester this year

There’s something lovely about those cymbals.
Way tight!!!!!

Great band performing a special song.

In awe.
ooh Man! Perfectance somewhere here! Bless You!
sori 4 my engls
This some good chit
14 people are like “Where all the crazy chops and fills?!?”
I enjoy this way more than Zildjian live. They try to sound and look like Snarky Puppy when all you need is an close-up with the drummer.
