"Goycochea will be an argentine hero for as long as he lives". Well, every goalkeeper who stops a penalty playing for Argentina is always compared with Goycochea. Always. In the last World Cup, the broadcaster was screaming his lungs out "Dibu Goyco Dibu Goyco Dibu Goyco!!" at every save by Dibu Martinez at the penalty shootout against Netherlands and France. And something similar happened against Netherlands in Brazil 2014 with Chiquito Romero. Goyco will always be a national hero.

Incredible moment for Diego Maradona. Back in April of the same yr, he led Napoli to their second Scudetto. But knocking out Italy in World Cup 1990, in Napoli’s home stadium, was the last straw for Maradona and he was soon had to leave Napoli the season after this.

The difference was, besides Messi's charisma, Maradona was introduced to narcotics while in Italy so based on that fact alone anyone can tell it would not end friendly or happily

Both the semis where bonkers matches. I think the one match I’ve spoken about the most in my life in the England Germany semi from Italia90. This match was also tasty affair.

Baggio scored not only this penalty. But also the penalty in 1998 against France in the Quarter final. Unfortunately Italy lost that shootout as well. All of this, of course, makes his 1994 penalty miss even more unfortunate.

Not deserved. The jerries won bc the key player for Argentina (Maradona's pal, C Caniggia) was out and the crafty German team realised they only had one choice > fabricate a penalty at the end of the match since historically Argentina recoups in both overtime extra play as well as shootout

I did not recall. Thank you for clarifying this! With Caniggia it could have easily been a win for AFA. I only remembered that the match remained 0-0 until just minutes before the end. A German player threw himself on the ground in goal area so quickly deemed as penalty...easy goal, no time to carry on. I know Germany returned Italy the favor eventually, Germany 2006 > Italy won the world cup

Compararlos en penales es difícil. Porque Goycochea ganó la serie de penales contra Yugoslavia e Italia en 1990. Luego contra Colombia y Brasil en la Copa América 1993 y de yapa nos da contra Dinamarca la equivalente a la Finalissima de 1993.
Mientras que el ''Dibu'' es notable contra Colombia en la Copa América 2021 y ni hablar con Países Bajos y Francia en 2022.
Ahora, como arquero prefiero al ''Dibu'' Martínez sin dudas....es completo. Corta centros, achica bien, habla desde el fondo y realiza atajadas únicas.

How was that first one "hard, low and unstoppable" or "the perfect spot kick" he hit it hard but that was it, it was barely towards the corner, looked closer to the middle. Keeper goes the right way he's always stopping that.
The biggest problem here is the keepers are squatting while waiting for the penalty.

Baresi and Biggio both scored penalties in this match, sadly they both would miss after 4 years in the final. Very small margins
Italy in the 90s are so unlucky because they lost all 3 penalty shoot outs at the WC. Imagine if they had the luck to win all 3. They would have won the WC 1994, reached their home final vs. Germany and had a solid chance to even reach a third final in semis vs. Croatia.

Oh the joy and happenstance of penalties : Maradona missed against Yugoslavia yet still went through, a couple(or more, including Maradona) of less-than-perfect Argentine penalties that went in .... from 2022 that's the way it can go . Score more goals in open-play and the penalties won't be needed.
This 1990 Penalty Shootout maybe not as dramatic as in 2010, this is still amazing.
Goycoechea jumps the correct direction every time! Unlike Zenga.
And how funny is it to see penalty takers to run a straight way (perpendicular to the goal line) - never seen nowadays.
Goycoechea was an experienced PK goalie. In the 1986 Champions League final he defended 2 PKs in a row for Barcelona.

Zenga was absolutely useless in this shootout. Might as well have let Argentina just shoot at an empty net. And his play on Cannigia's tying goal was awful. He should've stayed in goal and waited for that slow, floating header that he could've caught one handed.

However Maradona despite all that was the toughest son of a goat in football. Whenever he was called on by his national team, he never said die. @Andrew Burgemeister it doesn’t matter. There are a lot of times when a stronger team that dominates the game for 90 mins still loses the game. A win is a win, there is no “shouldn’t have or couldn’t have in soccer. Think about 2004 Euro how Greece won the trophy. Again, you don’t need to be the best performing team to win.
