Agreed with the ideas while tanks from the UK, America, and Germany may have some tactical advantages, they are not necessarily a guarantee of success in modern warfare due to various factors such as terrain, air support, and technological advances by opposing forces that can exploit the design weaknesses of these tanks.

The real war is to destroy targets that are standing and not moving ie hospitals and stations depots. The best defence is the ability to destroy Russian's capabilities in retaining their territory . Starve of food aand fuel will find dishearthen soldiers and civilians. Russia will suffer when western allies are destroying their capabilities to advance their Infantry and Tanks. Without oil and without food ,U do not have an Army but a team of hungry and disenchanted soldiers or convicts. The cold in winter and the wet in spring will make invasion slowed while moral amongst the soldiers will be low . Difficulty in bringing supplies and destroying Russian Airbases will limit the capabilities of their Army and Airforce.

@Dale Crocker Well only God knows and the future will give us the answer. But advancing a few kilometers in 6 months and not being able to capture more than a very small town is on a completely different scale than retaking the whole of Donbass and two much bigger cities with it. I find it very little realistic. Also during those 6 months they lost half of the ground they had already being able to take, part of it (cherson northof the river) thanks to collaborators that are not there ready to help them anymore. So no.

The Sky News presenters are consistently top notch in their elegant way of asking power-questions and former military officer Phil Ingram and his colleagues have brought pride and distinction to the military across the world. Phil brings us up-to-date on a war that now the whole world has fixed its eyes upon and now we understand the nuts and bolts of armed conflict much, much better thanks to Mr Ingram and his distinguished fellow military personnel. What we must try to do is to make President Putin understand that the west means no disrespect towards him or Russia; we are in this battle till the end because we in the west cannot allow a democratic, sovereign country to be overrun and taken over by any country. We are not and never will be against the Russian people. Fair-play is an integral part of our values and President Putin has to be made aware of the fact that the Ukraine war is an existential issue in the west's need to be understood that democratic values will never be compromised. Freedom to exist is an existential part of our mission in life, and though we've had our share of imposters who have denigrated democratic our democratic principles can never be compromised and invaded sovereign countries will be met with force. Putin has to accept the fact that the rogue elements exist in every governmental system including his will never prevail in making the world subject to rule by an autocratic regime.

Maybe someone could please explain; why not give the challenge 2 tanks and m1 Abrahams to a country with leopard tanks, so they can supply more leopard tanks. This reduces the risk of technology falling into Russian hands, as well as simplify the training, supply and maintenance?

    • DS9TREK
      DS9TREK Month ago

Because countries can't afford to support them. Most European countries have small armies so rely on having only one type of tank to maintain to keep costs low.
So if the the Netherlands, for example, gave some its leopards to Ukraine and replaced them with Chally 2, not only do they need to buy and store new ammo (Chally 2 and Leopard 2 use different rounds) but get new spare parts too just for Chally 2.
It also would add to the challenges of getting the right war materiel to the right place should the Netherlands have to go to war itself.

This is looking more like WW1 every day. I think given modern weapons the advantage is massively in favour of the defenders so any Ukrainian counter offensive would be extremely costly, even with the modern western tanks. I think the best weapons we could give Ukraine is more precision artillery, HIMARS, , Excalibur, Brimstone etc so they can keep plugging away and destroying the Russian lines at a safe distance.

    • Jedidiah

Ukraine lost 4000 soldiers in 2 days, I think it was the 40th brigade 80% loss. 60 tanks don't replace the more than 1000 they lost already....HIMARS, we don't here anything about them anymore, I wonder why...

One single well-placed strike on a Belarus training facility using three or more missiles and/or drones launched from different locations 3 days before the invasion of Crimea would completely scuttle their coordination . Yu would want to give it 3 days because the Russian military has a tendency to over-react , so yu want to give them a very small amount of time to panic and shuffle things around .

So both sides are just waiting. We'll see how good those reserves are this spring. I presume Putin wants to take whats left of the Donbas and sue for peace this year before western weapons can be deployed in full. It will take 1-2months to train the troops into the new tanks but the armoured vehicles will take less and protect more Ukrainian troops from getting hit by minor weapons/drones and perhaps simple katusha. Hoping to see the Himars being used to greater effect now that there is more experience in using them. Cannot seem pushing over the Dnipro rivers. If Donbas is the prize, then finding a way of making the russians retreat in haste (with reserves less willing to die) will be the key. Putin will not sue for peace unless the war is not working and its eating up his new reserves and making his tenure at home (already suffering from real sanctions impacts) dicey. The Russian army will only take so much death and they are not fighting to protect the homeland. Training Ukrainians in Jets will take much longer and the west might provide them as a defence in any further future Russian attempts to try again so their impact appearing (and at such a small scale even if it was offered) would be more psychological. Advanced western drones that provide a more detailed battlefront view is needed vs suicide drones that hit just one target.

Ukraine did a very good job on Defending but, if this is really war, ukraine should have moved to assault the preparing russians. I mean look at this they are still on their position. It is not surprising to see that those who are defending bahkmut may fail to defend from a Massive and prepared army of russia because they took the peaceful time to strategize and re arm.

it would seem like if the Ukrainians could absorb and stop a Russian counter offensive it would set them up nicely for their attack. basically who attacks first and to whom does the advantage go would be the question. I think the Ukrainians want the tree cover again. seem to be a great advantage for them.

"Today PMC units found bodies with their heads and hands cut off in Bakhmut. They also found phones and other information indicating that these are the bodies of mercenaries the enemy failed to withdraw amid the fierce fighting and tried to conceal their identities this way. But electronic devices were found along with the bodies."

i dont think they will attack in february, last time they bottlenecked themselves onto the roads, which ended horribly.
They will have learned from their mistakes and wont create those 65 kilometer long convoys anymore.
Id expect that they start their offensive at the end of march, like march 20th.

Putin fancies himself a new Russian Warlord like Peter the Great or even Stalin. So yes he might see a late February attack as being comparable to Operation Bagration. June 22, 1944 exactly 3 years after the start of Operation Barbarossa.

That Institute for the Study of War map is badly wrong in obvious ways. It is showing "Russian Advances" all along the front line, starting at the Dnieper and going east. There have only been very small Russian advances in a few spots along that line. The map also fails to show the Ukranians as having reclaimed the big areas to the north of Kiev that the Russians had taken for a while last spring. Do your homework, Sun!

Ukraine should also understand that one should spread their legs unless it hurts someone.
Ukraine knew Russia could attack them if they don't join NATO they should have established some peace treaty before the war begun.
Russia should also understand this is not era of war,he should have given what Ukraine asked.
This war is growing as the weapons are coming to hands of Ukraine army..
Ukraine should understand the America who is supporting them are purchasing petroleum products of Russia through India last year 70%(Indian govt data).
In this war US Uk Germany all are demonstrating their weapons making Ukraine a puppet.
