What always amazes me about grappling at the highest level is even though you lose, you only lost by a small amount of experience and circumstance. So even watching a fight where your fighter loses is an absolute spectacle to be respected.

This is completely untrue. He dominated Andre. He outsmarted him by a mile and even though Gordan had his back for a good solid 5-10mins. It was obvious what Gordan wanted to do (get the choke) and Andre couldn't stop it. Don't be a dweeb. There's levels and certainly the level difference was no small amount

4:18 the nuances to how Gordon defends this arm bar is incredible. Watch it in 0.25x speed and note how Gordon uses his shins and forearms to shield his chest and stomach - preventing his opponent from getting his legs involved in the arm bar to create leverage. The opponent is unable to secure any points of attachment or control to Ryan aside from the arm itself, which is not sufficient to prevent the subsequent roll & escape.
Forreal, watch it in 0.25x and pause liberally to take it in. It’s amazing… especially when you consider this was EARLYYY in Gordon’s career and the very beginning chapter of his development into the GOAT. Nowadays he has every single position, every single movement, every possible outcome from every possible angle… all down to a science.
Gordon isn’t even really putting on an athletic performance when he competes anymore… he’s out studying people and out-nerding them with his understanding of physics and human body mechanics. Like he’s doing stuff and creating wedges and angles with hus body that his opponents don’t even understand, let alone know how to defeat it.
Then on top of it, he obviously IS an athletic specimen… *and* he’s taking steroids. Put it all together and I’m not sure the laws of physics, nor our current modern understanding of the human body, allow this man to be defeated in a 1 vs 1 submission competition.

Pena didn't ask the promotion to post-pone the event, Gordon asked Pena if he wanted to and Pena refused.
Also, for the match against Galvao, the rules were "no points before the 10min mark", which is why you can literally see Gordon look at the clock and once past 10minutes, he started scoring points, passing guards, taking the back etc, in less that 2 minutes he scored 12 points.

Everyone in this sport will be in a position where they can snap limbs. Most of them don't do it on purpose, so they won't get a bad rep because then people will start doing the same to you, given the chance. It's simple jujutsu etiquette and nothing that deserves praise.

    • AlexZander
      AlexZander 5 months ago +2

It's a much different sport when you are getting wrestled and punched and kicked while attempting to bjj an opponent. In BJJ, he can just focus on that specifically. I would expect, if he can handle getting whacked in the head a bit, he could transition just fine to MMA. But he would have to learn how to deal with the Dagestan type grappling as well.
....Also, looks like Ryan is sporting some bulging veins. Probably using PEDs. Would probably test positive if fighting MMA. Not sure how strict bjj tournaments are with testing for PEDs.

    • Cary Rumley
Cary Rumley 5 months ago +2

@AlexZander That's not how good BJJ athletes would transition to MMA, which is why Gordon hasn't done it. Even Garry trying to do it the right way took several years.
Not to mention Gordon possesses more than just BJJ, he does have the type of high level wrestling that can be used very effectively in MMA. Striking can absolutely be taught.

@Ninja Dildo Show In Gordon Ryan's case everybody sees he deserves it unless they are blind. Subjective yes. However, overwhelmingly 99.9% subjectively see he deserves it.

Although highly skilled, Ryan falls into the sad truth of all high-level performance athletes. There is a reason why competitive grappling has little to no sanction on drug testing. You take a guy who is already immensely skilled, and then throw in some Test, GH, and EPO, then you have an unstoppable man.

He’s obviously supremely talented at grappling and submissions. But it stinks we haven’t been able to see him in a MMA fight and probably won’t. But I had serious stomach issues as well and I truly feel for the guy. It’s a problem that persists throughout your life and there are times that I’ll get bad stomach issues out of nowhere. Even when taking care of yourself, abstaining from drinking, eating the right foods, taking vitamins and supplements! You can live the healthiest lifestyle but if you have this problem non of that will help.
If he does find a solution or something that helps, PLEASE let the rest of us know!

I was thinking of getting into jiujitsu but I was hesitant because I felt like I was too old. Then I saw this grizzled, white haired old man absolutely dominating. He was at the top of his game and he was old enough to be my dad. I thought, if this old dude can do it, so can i.

  • PowerScissor
    PowerScissor 6 months ago +5

He isn't scared of anything but a drug test.
I respect John Danaher, and hopefully he's making enough money from his squad of juice-heads to cover the shame he must feel about them.
Sends a great message to the kids in BJJ. You want to be like the "KING" you need to be fully blasted on gear in your 20's.
Hopefully he makes enough money to stay on gear for life, or at the minimum health insurance to cover the doctor and pharmacy to be healthy for the next 50 years that he might live.
I've watched many amateur athletes hit the gear hard for their 20's...and let me tell you there are consequences when you get older. If you make a bunch of money from it great...if not, expect a rough ride later in life. Not always...but I've seen it happen enough to be cautious kids.

My best friend growing up in school who did that exact same move/slap. The one that cyborg did at 15:25 and got disqualified for. But anytime we had a wresting meet or tournament literally every time he would try to snatch the head he would just smack the shit out of them lmao. And let me tell you it did indeed work I think he lost just 1 time in a year haha.
Edit- I stopped to make the original comment above before watching the rest of the video. So I’m watching and then I see he had a match with Jacob couch. Funny story the buddy I’m talking about is best friends with Jacob couch and trains with him at daisy fresh his name is Michael Pixley if you want to check him out!

this is interesting, ive never really looked into this type of competitions, which seems to be way more technical and what appears a war of masters. taking out striking from what i see makes you have to focus totally on technique and i see it here. perhaps ill look at others than just UFC which is mainly all i watch that and ballator, but now gonna look into this.
