Deion Brought 30 million to the school. Fixed the field, Locker rooms. ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Game Day, 60 minutes, CBS, Good morning, America. 2 winning seasons, undefeated. 2 championships. Got his kids exposure. Had Pro scouts at practice. Houston is in the pros, Miller is Next. Put the SWAC on the Map. What did JSU, the state do in return except benefit from the success. They sat back and went along for the ride. he left JSU in a much better place. Let's see if the next coach can keep it going.

Disrespect and being unappreciated seems to be common theme in our community, it's sad and shameful. They didn't even treat him right ... Where were all these other celebrities at fo help, support or advocate for the other issues he was also focused on... My black, we stay hurting each other.

@DSI Studios I hate how. you missed the point. Being ungrateful is terrible, and needs to be addressed. but Deion Misrepresented his relationship with JSU, and that too needs to be addressed.
we have a sad history of allowing pastor/pimps to come thru our communities and convince the congregation that its Gods will for them to have the fancy clothes, and the mansion on the hill.
I personally am glad that he was able to double up and go from 40 mill in personal assets to 70 mill. And I'm glad that he brought attention to the water crisis in Jackson, and I'm glad that the surrounding business were able to make more money in recent years because of his influence.
but I'm also extremely disappointed that he framed his personal aspirations, as a calling from God to level the playing field. when he really just wanted to go coach at a PWI

  • Come Fast To Get Into My Body

People conveniently forgot about how he spoke up abt the water crisis in Jackson…everything he did not only for JSU but the whole HBCU community should be applauded and celebrated!!!…this is why black people don’t like to help each other or patronize black business because as soon as we can’t help or shop with them they’ll talk down on you!! We gotta do better Deion was a blessing sent not only to JSU but the HBCU community as a whole!! Thank You Coach Prime!🙏💯

He left because he was lied to concerning money among other issues. He did in fact donate some of his salary.

    • combatevolution
      combatevolution Month ago

@Shade Moore I have not done the research on the cheerleaders. and i know that most millionaires have large charitable donations, and so i concede that he probably gave something to the cheerleaders.
But there was an interview in which Deion referenced paying for a building, that people are using to say that he donated half his salary. Which was not true.
I hate addressing his compensation, because he said that it wasn't about the money. The only reason that i reference it at all, is because of this narrative that it makes complete sense to behave badly if...
      -your underpaid.
-need to give back most of your paycheck.
-and someone offers you way more money.

    • Shade Moore

@combatevolution I live IN Mississippi, it's a known fact that not only was did he use did he donated some of his salary he paid for the cheerleaders uniforms after his son told him about it. Jsu didnt even have trainers for the team until he bought his own with him. So no fake news at all. We witnessed all of it here in the state.

    • combatevolution

its always good to hear from people outside of the community.
      and WRONG!!!!
      more fake news.
how could anyone paying attention to the last season forget about the water crisis. and please stop with this narrative about how black people don't like to help black people. just because Deion left, that doesn't diminish the commitment from folks like Eddie George, or the countless others that work tirelessly to support Black organizations.
We 'the people in the community' have to do better, and we also need to hold Deion accountable for the language that he used while at JSU.
you cant level the playing field if you take away the 5 star recruits the first chance you get.

Deon was like Glenda the good witch in the Wizard of Oz. He helped the players realize that they had the ability all along to be winners just like Glenda told Dorothy " You had it all along." I'm a die hard JSU fan but I recognize that Deon didn't have to do what he did for us. I'm very sad that he is leaving but even more sad at all the negativity he is getting. He doesn't deserve that AT ALL! I will always be greatfull to him AND support him. Black folks....stop the crab in a bucket mentality. PLEASE! WE MUST do better.

Nobody cares about another black man getting the bag. We love seeing images of ourselves driving foreign cars, popping bottles, and throwing bags of money at the strip clubs. Even if you have to sell drugs to pregnant mothers, and destroy your community in the process. We give the successful black man with the money a pass.
but Deion presented his time at JSU as something different. he made it seem as if he cared, and that he would level the playing field.

You're definitely telling the truth my brother. The ungratefulness is absolutely amazing from "our people". This is so obvious in all industries, organizations, places of employment, homes, and relationships. Brother Smiley, while here, during this moment, I greatly appreciate you my brother. I can't help but recall meeting a young Indian man who was once incarcerated in our Georgia prison system, prior to my retirement, who spoke so highly of you as a boss. If more could have the decency and appreciation to speak with the same graciousness for Brother Dion.....it would be awesome. Thank you and yours for all you have done for others as well. Blessings.

@Jeannette Fox I don't have to question his faith, when i can just go back and listen to what he said.
and for the record. I am not critical about his choice to accept a more lucrative offer. Nor do I give JSU a pass for the rumors that have been spreading about financial mishandling.
I only comment because I am disappointed in our people's inability to take the time to go back and actually listen to what he said. and without these comments you may not ever have access to the truth.

He framed his time at JSU as being a calling from God to level the playing field.
If I was a minister at your church, that introduced you to your wife, and helped you start a family business.
at the point that I start sleeping with your wife, steal your employees, and foreclose on your house. those selfish actions kinda undue all the good will that i may have built up in the beginning. and you then saying that you are disappointed would not be seen as being ungrateful.

@combatevolution Yes, the recruiters meet with the family, but I think the actual decision is the player. You do realize they are meeting with the players while still in high school? Are they meeting with the family when the player jump in the portal? I have seen parents get mad because the child didn't choose their college. I wasn't looking for praise helping my children. I was just saying it's their choice. When I said you couldn't compare CP to the general population. I was talking about his celebrity status, resources, and influence. So if you know tons, I should've heard of them. Are you from MS? MS is hardest on CP.

    • combatevolution
      combatevolution Month ago

@Toi Toi CP was just an example that we are both aware of. I have tons of personal examples, but you don't know any of them so it wouldn't resonate.
Congratulations on helping your daughters to both get masters degrees. I think that's amazing and should be applauded.
I don't have any exhaustive studies to prove either of our points. this is purely anecdotal, but i have seen this play out a lot. When young people are faced with making major decisions absent experience, its easy to make mistakes. It makes sense for them to lean on the wisdom of the 2 humans that love them more than anyone else on the planet.
If the decision was primarily up to the students, there would not be such a big emphasis on recruiters meeting with the athletes parents.

    • Toi Toi
      Toi Toi Month ago

@combatevolution So you are comparing the general population to CP, got it. Most of those students at JSU are receiving financial assistance. Would you say their parents are successful? I have 2 daughters that graduated from college, both with Masters. We visited the schools they wanted to attend, not our choice. One decided on a private school and the other a state school. Is CP daughter going to CU?

    • combatevolution
      combatevolution Month ago

@Toi Toi In my experience, when i talk to people that have been successful academically its largely due to a very proactive support system. and its very common for important decisions to be greatly influenced by the parents.
When Deion left for Colorado? what happened to his Kids. Were they left with this difficult decision that they had to navigate on their own, or did they get on the private Jet and fly to Colorado that very same night. Shilo was missing, and I havent heard much from him lately, but Deion seems to be pretty sure that Shilo is coming as well.
Maybe because parents have tremendous influence over the lives of their adult children well into their mid 20's. Like I said.
It's not cute or necessary to be contrarian just for arguments sake. Its ok to accept that some of the things that I say make sense.

    • Toi Toi
      Toi Toi Month ago

@combatevolution First my location isn't important for the conversation, but Atlanta. What is successful for you? The decision to attend college, isn't the same as someone choosing a school for you. I don't know what community you live in, but adults can't make other adults go to school. You must be from MS.

Although this issue is centralized on an HBCU (Black culture). I must bring attention to this issue being bigger than just Black people.
This is a sports sociocultural dynamic.
There's a strange premise that people can dictate how athletes should live their lives - make decisions, fashions, relationships, etc.
When it comes to athletes (celebrity status) suddenly they are not allotted decent respect as an adult and an “author of their book of life.”
The masses somehow believe that they are their controlled subjects.
It's outrageous and getting alarmingly out of control. Specifically, because there's nothing less controllable and more reckless than group-think mentalities.

What boils my skins is that you intolerable asses sit up here and make it seem like we owe Deion our lives for what he has done. Deion brought exposure because he is a walking piece of marketing. He could sneeze and ESPN is right there to cover it like it’s 5 o’clock news. Our alumni base does give back but keep in mind we are not financially wealthy as the PWIs y’all love to fangirl over. So our giving is only enough to cover some of the disparities due to lack of state funding. Now the catalyst for change to our institutions are gone. What do you suppose we do..more money yea but it does solve all the issues our movement is facing. We are the only race that will gladly build up or renovate someone else house than our own. Can you imagine a HBCU D1AA mega conference that includes talented players, star studded coaches, and facilities out of this world. No you can’t because you only see it for them and not for us. No one is mad at Deion for getting a new opportunity, but he left before we had a system in place to thrive off the blueprint. Two years is not enough for a program nor an entire conference to move forward without that system. Food for thought‼️

It’s sad that he left, but let’s not act like his time at JSU has been sunshine and rainbows. Deion donated HALF his salary to renovating the football facilities for the players. He brought in the one of best coaching staffs JSU has ever seen. His coaching staff was grossly underpaid and he tried asking the school and community for help to keep his staff. JSU been having issues providing quality meals to keep his players in peak condition and the school and community still wouldn’t step up.
When Jackson went thru the water crisis he moved his players into a hotel so they could have water, and can take showers.
We love being buddy buddy when it’s time to party and don’t have to put any skin in the game. But when asked to contribute it’s “I sho wish I could but I ain’t able right now”

@LiveLife2FullestMy age…? Just call me Dr. Smith. Let’s just go with that. With all due respect, my position on this issue has less to do with Coach Sanders than it has to do with the bigger picture. Coach Sanders had to be stopped because he was a threat to the Big Five. They played Chess and won.

I just have to say this as I have read you comments- you really are very immature and for some of you, it’s just no pleasing you on any level. You like to reside in victimhood. Partnerships aren’t handouts; good grief. With mindsets like yours, this is why some in our community stay stuck. Damned if they do damned if they don’t… sheesh. Seriously how old are you?@A.L. Thanks, Ricky for addressing this. I appreciate Deion Sanders for even taking the job at Jackson State. I will continue to support Deion Sanders. DS going to Colorado will open up doors for players in a different division and those players will be able to get more access to entering the NFL tryouts. This is a, win, win. He still has other children at Jackson State unless they leave, but he will always support that program and others.

He couldn't take the sacrifice to build the HBCU to the level that he saw at Colorado, knowing that he would be long gone before the fruits of that sacrifice would be possible, a noble sacrifice, but Ego and hubris called, why shouldn't he have these things in the white world, why can't he have the wealth they have to offer, why build it over there when it's already built over here by the white people and I can have access to it at the highest echelons and praised like the deity that I am, two stark choices and for the Black community to many choose like Dion.

I have to admit, I was a little upset at first because I’m currently a student at an HBCU here in Alabama and I loved how he brought attention to the HBCU side because at one point it seemed like we didnt matter when it comes to sports but then after thinking about it he had to do what was best for him, and his family. So I understand because I had to leave one job and move on to the next in order to elevate in my paralegal career. So now I get it and I must apologize to Coach Prime I’m so sorry for being upset 😞

When you started your first Job, did you give a bunch of speeches about how you were going to make changes to undue years of racism. by encouraging other like minded African Americans to join you at that organization, instead of pursuing better opportunities elsewhere. or did you just fill out an application.
Nobody cares that you had to leave one job in order to 'elevate' your career, and nobody cares that Deion felt that it was an elevation to leave the best HBCU for the worst PWI.
please dont be upset that he left. people are always going to come in and out of your life. but holding someone accountable for what they say is something different.

The people who are speaking bad about Coach need to place their family in his position then tell me what they would do? They would take the job in Colorado. While they are speaking bad about Coach thru should be trying to congratulate him and carry on where he left off.

At first I was disappointed in Coach Prime.I thought about it and I was wrong. Now, I look at this as a brilliant Chess move on his part. 1. He has shown Top Recruits that it is possible to shine and be noticed at a HBCU. 2. He has mentored Black Coaches on the SWAC level and shown them how to win and get it done. 3. He's leaving has made room for his mentees to shine without him and to have phenomenal growth. 4. He branded himself as a winning coach and will open doors at the next level for more Black Head Coaches. Great move Guru Prime.

@EastGate 613 well the white's have teamed up with the Asians to get rid of affirmative action which would result in a lot of Black Americans getting denied into predominantly white institution's, who will still allow those black stud jocks an opportunity to still go there and make the White school's dominate with those players who bring in Billions in t.v revenue, and I'm sure those black students will be relieved to know that they have their own universities and colleges already set up for them, look at you don't even understand your history and why we have HBCU in the first place but I understand, like 21 Savage you think anything old doesn't have value.
