Lyrics
You are far
When I could have been your star
You listened to people
Who scared you to death, and from my heart
Strange that you were strong enough
To even make a start
But you'll never find
Peace of mind,
'Til you listen to your heart
People
You can never change the way they feel
Better let them do just what they will
For they will
If you let them
Steal your heart from you
People
Will always make a lover feel a fool
But you knew I loved you
We could have shown them all
We should have seen love through
Fooled me with the tears in your eyes
Covered me with kisses and lies
So goodbye
But please don't take my heart Music
This song has to be the most under appreciated song in George Michael's library. Definitely my favorite. So smooth and mellow. George Michael was so ahead of his time. A master and a beautiful human being. RIP George! You are missed so much, especially by those of us that grew up with you.
The music is smooth and mellow, but the lyrics are ferocious. The contrast is what makes the song memorable
"under appreciated" ? By who ?
This song was the fifth or six single to be released from his Faith album. I believe it reached number one in the adult contemporary charts and eight in the hot billboard 100s. At the time it was definitely very unique for what was being played out on Pop radio. This song is pure genius and sounds just as fresh today as the day it was released. I instantly loved this song when it came out because it showed a whole other side of George’s immense talent.
It has always been my favorite George Michael song as well.
@A. M. Well your experience is not my experience. I don’t know what part of the world you live in. But I remember seeing this video on MTV and hearing it on the radio.
This song is PURE perfection. It has everything. Raspy voice. Bass. Piano. Retro bluesy sounds. Silk and smooth lyrics. The right amount of jazz.
George Michael is pure perfection.
i totally agree AP, this is EPIC great!
He sure is!! Divine in EVERY way!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I have the bass lines for Kissing A Fool, I want learn this, and play on double upright bass.
I agree.. 💯👍❤️
Yes please.
This is by far my favorite George Michael song. I never get tired of listening to it. It is soulful, sexy and with his beautiful voice it truly is perfection. He was one in a billion. RIP dear Georgios. We love and miss you more than words can ever say. ❤️ 💔❤️💔❤️
My Brother-in-law is the sax player in the video. He told me that in between filming, they would sing Stevie Wonder songs. Said George was a gent through and through.
A terrific story my friend! This song is true pop perfection. Shoutout to your brother in law. Peace.
I always felt he was a gentleman. You have just confirmed it. A true entertainer and he had class. Such a shame the tabloids always picked up whenever he took a wrong step.
I believe that he was a gent, like you say. After his death, so many people (some with approval of his family) came out saying how much good George had done helping so many people from all walks of life, quietly, without making it PR campaign at any point.
He was an angel.🕊
Amazing to know George sounded like a true gentleman.
This song really showcases George Michael's voice. His vocal dynamics were perfect; soft, breathy, then rising to a passionate crescendo, then back down to a soft, silky finish.
This song almost makes me swoon.
Oh, George, did you ever know what a gorgeous voice you possessed, and all the other musical gifts you had? You will never be forgotten. This song is proof positive of that. R.I.P George.
Beautiful honesty expressed with such eloquence GOD BLESS YOU BELOVED SOUL 🙃💜🙏🤝🤲
This is by far George Michael's best solo song.So smooth,no theatrics or silly dancing...just that glorious voice.
I agree 💯%!! My absolute favorite song of his. Pure perfection.
Silly dancing?
@Dimitri Ath Lol, yeah, some of George Michael's videos have less-than-stellar dancing in them. For example, the "Faith" video and the one for "Wake Me Up Before You Go-go". Don't get me wrong; I love George Michael...but I like it better when he just sings.😁
@Starlet O'Hara I love all of his dance moves! Hips galore!
This man had the voice of an angel...like butter melting on hot toast. This song displays his voice perfectly. Sounds like a jazz standard. Perfect.
Well said it brings all the warm fuzzy feelings out ❤️❤️❤️
Sounds like the kind of record that would be released circa 1962-63 on the orange '2-eye' Columbia 45 label as on many a single of that period by Andy Williams, Tony Bennett, Robert Goulet, Patti Page, Steve Lawrence, Eydie Gorme et al.
Yesssss
❤️ your comment
I agree,I adore him..this song as I've grown means more and more to me.
You’re loved & missed much more than you will ever know George Michael!!❤️❤️❤️
Still gives me goosebumps after all these years!
Una de las canciones más lindas de George y de toda la música!!su voz única estremece!!exquisita!
This is my all time favorite George Michael’s song! Soulful, jazzy, mellow, smooth, fabulously bluesy and sexy! Gone too soon, much too soon, so much talent… still love you George!!!
[Verse 1]
You are far
When I could have been your star
You listened to people
Who scared you to death and from my heart
Strange that you were strong enough
To even make a start
But you'll never find peace of mind
'Til you listen to your heart
[Chorus]
People
You can never change the way they feel
Better let them do just what they will
For they will
If you let them steal your heart from you
People
Will always make a lover feel a fool
But you knew I loved you
We could have shown them all
We should have seen love through
[Bridge 1]
Fooled me with the tears in your eyes
Covered me with kisses and lies
So goodbye
But please don't take my heart
[Verse 2]
You are far
I'm never gonna be your star
I'll pick up the pieces and mend my heart
Maybe I'll be strong enough
I don't know where to start
But I'll never find peace of mind
While I listen to my heart
[Chorus]
People
You can never change the way they feel
Better let them do just what they will
For they will
If you let them steal your heart from you
People
Will always make a lover feel a fool
But you knew I loved you
We could have shown them all
We should have seen love through
Ba da da ah ah ah
[Bridge 2]
But remember this
Every other kiss
That you ever give
Long as we both live
When you need the hand of another man
One you really can surrender with
I will wait for you like I always do
There's something there
That can't compare with any other
[Verse 3]
You are far
When I could have been your star
You listened to people
Who scared you to death and from my heart
Strange that I was wrong enough
To think you'd love me too
Guess you were kissing a fool
[Outro]
You must have been kissing a fool
Thank You 🥰🎶
🤩❤️Thank you.
Thank u
Just an absolutely perfect love song!!...My heart melts every time I hear him sing it😍😍🥰🥰❤❤🔥🔥🔥
@DesireOnly1 Great song indeed !!
George was just 24 years old when he wrote this song.... his voice, the lyrics, the melody, his heartfelt delivery of it... I am in such awe still 30 plus years later after its release... Sublime in every way.
What's truly amazing is that this song could have easily been a staple for all standards singers in the 50s-60s where could easily assume guys like Sinatra, Bennett, Martin, Torme, all of them would have loved to have given this a go had it been around then. George was magnificently talented.
I didn't know he wrote this song. I thought it was a song from way before. Have heard many singers cover it but none come close to this
@James Owens Yes George actually wrote this when he was part of Wham and didn't want to record it as he felt it didn't meet their image. It is one of my favorites of his which is again written from his personal life experience.
@Lars Lewisyou are soooo correct with your observation
He was too good for this world.
Brilliant vocalist! 2022 and we are still enjoying his songs!
timeless!
Good music is forever!
We sure are
Yes we are. Beautiful song and voice in 2022
💓
Amo você George Michael ❤. Maravilhoso em todos os sentidos, músicas lindas e profundas, músicas maravilhosas!😊
I was so lucky to have lived to hear this song. 1986-87 were great years. Every year I listen to "Do They Know It's Christmas," and George Michael's voice sends chills down my spine. He was an angel sent down to us. I pray that when I die I will hear his voice in that ever-increasing choir of musicians. God bless him.
I listened to this song every weekend for 10 years now. And I still love it
This is what perfection sounds like ❤ His voice, pure magic! Anything George sung turned to gold!
This song is pure perfection.
As so many of George's songs are ! So hard to choose a favorite when this man had so many songs that were perfection in their composition and in their execution. An awesome talent he was ! So sad that he's no longer here to gift us with more.
This is my song.. teenage walking down the 14 steps in my house with sass and this song playing in my head Love George for it my favourite ever thank you
I agree . one if best slow jazz songs of the 90,s
@Patricia Moreno I understand what you're saying. However, when it comes to *this* song in particular, it just stands out. Simple as that.
I remember constantly hearing this song on the radio as an 8 year old kid. I didn't even understand music back then the way I do now. Yet it always stuck with me. I guess what I'm saying is...this could easily be George Michael's greatest song of all time. In my humble opinion, anyway.
AGREED!!
This song was brand new when I was a little kid. I remember being absolutely mesmerized by it. The magic of this, is that now I'm *much* older and yet it strikes the exact same chords with me. Whatever exists inside of us that is timeless, whatever recognizes something that we love or that resonates with our soul whether we are a small child or an adult, this song has that for me. So to be able to listen to it throughout my life as the years go by and experience the same feeling each time is nothing short of spellbinding. I miss George Michael as an artist and I'll always be thankful to him for the magic of this song. ✨
Yesssss! I feel much the same way - beautifully stated
For an unknown reason, I've just realized, this has been my favorite song since the first time I heard it. I love everything of it the rhythm, the lyrics and definitely loved George"s voice and music as well. My children and now my granddaughter have heard his music all their lives but most of all "Kissing a fool" ❤
Such a beautiful song, and his voice! So damn smooth and warm, and that range... I try to sing this, but those parts where he transitions over to the high notes/falsetto and back ("So goodbye...." and "There's something there that can't compare...") are flawless, I *wish* I could sing like him!!! RIP man... this guy is a legend, his music is part of my nostalgic past and I will always treasure his songs.
Never met him, but his songs just kill it on so many levels..
wish I could have seen him live. A musical genius. His music is his legacy
love u micheal.:)
Completely agree with you ❤
Wow... 33 years later and it's still magic - utter genius. Love and respect to the Maestro.
I remember buying this in January 1989 as a cassette single. I played it so much that it warped. Absolutely love the jazz chords/infusion here, his voice is velvet and the lyrics are so well written. To the young artists out there now making music, take note (pun intended)..... THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE A SONG.
I just found out about George I'm 13 yrs old rn, I'm in love. and yes most artists in my generation should improve their songwriting.
I bought it on vinyl and played it constantly.
I also love the jazzy sound of this beautiful song. And you are absolutely right about his voice......sssoooo smooth and velvety. Could listen to him 24/7 nonstop. Love him so much.
Same, I bought this cassette and listened to it over and over. My fav of his songs.
The "cassingle". Always budget priced.
Semplicemente meravigliosa. ❤
Probably the greatest vocalist in decades…. Magnificent voice control and supremely smooth delivery. Iconic and matchless is all you can say…
It's 2020 and I still love this song. This song is a timeless classic.
Yeah ! Me too still love this song !! One of my all-time favourites frm George Michael.... 25th Dec 2020 🇸🇬 Singapore
It truly is timeless in its sound. I love this song. When I first heard it on release years ago, I thought it was George redoing an old standard by someone else. Amazing.
2021
One of my faves by GM. So smooth the music, plus amazing wisdom shared so poetically in the lyrics! Love forever to GM...
@Leslie Robertson same 🥰🥰
Most underrated artist of any kind in any genre in human history. The talent possessed by George Michael was merit enough to place him on a Michael Jackson level
The lyrics in this track are incredible. This song is from way back also. What an artist.
I can not stress this enough, he just really had the most pleasant sounding voice. If I could sing like anyone, I would want to sound like Mr.Michael.
Чудесный голос звучит в этой песне ,великолепный Джордж Майкл на все времена !
I just couldn't get enough of this album at the time and thought I was a freak for listening to it to many times - but tonight I'm revisiting his music and I understand why I was so taken with it!!!!!!George Michael is such a Grand Master!!!!! Thank God his music will live on in Eternity!!!!!
No one will ever carry this song like George.
FACTS!
Had someone else tried covering it? No!
unique voice
try Michael Buble mate
This is probably my most FAVORITE video of him,...that little smile towards the end...UGGGHHH...i cannot stand how beautiful he was...I'm heartbroken we won't have more of him....although i'm beyond thrilled that his legendary music and videos are here for us to admire him. Gorgeous.
Love you George Michael!! Your voice and lyrics are second to none
His voice is absolute perfection.
So it's 1988, I'm 8 years old. George's voice was so powerful, silk, and smooth, that I remember watching people skate to this. I didn't remember them skating, I remembered the song they were skating to. Missing you George, still in December 2021.
And 2022
He’s my favourite artist of all time. Nearly six years on it’s still heartbreaking knowing he’s not here. There’s a few of his songs that are difficult to listen to and this is one of them. Him and Deon the bass player (who passed away last year) will be jamming together in heaven now :)
A master piece !!! LOVED IT !!!! We missed you Michael !!!!
Sad we are living in a world without George in it.
💞
If Jesus Christ is alive and well, then how come George, love and Elvis are dead?
@Angelina K. George and Elvis shortened their own lives. Yes, they had "help"...bet they did it to themselves. I *very* much am thankful to both for the music they made.
So very sad
Had it all. Total package. George will live on forever through his music just like he said. The death of his younger sister a little over a month ago is a real tragedy. She couldn't go on without her brother. So sad.
What a beautiful voice and song. Love it . I can listen to it over and over again. What a wonderful man gone to soon .
This song is on my lips anytime I get tipsy. Love love this man! Rest In Peace beautiful soul
.......AMO COMO MUITAS MUSICAS SÃO ETERNAS Em NOSSAS VIDAS.!! 💕
Essa marcou uma época.
I love the spare instrumentation (only piano, acoustic guitar & bass), which puts George’s gorgeous voice in the spotlight. His smooth as butter voice & the ASMR quality of it are sheer perfection. It has the feel of a 1940’s jazz standard. This is something that would have appealed to Sinatra. Absolutely timeless.
George Michael wrote this timeless classic and he sings like no other. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world.
George Michael is pure perfection.
Com certeza. Linda canção 👏👏👏👏👏
Def YES 🙌🏽 ❤️❤️❤️❤️
This song makes me want to love again.
Liquid platinum.
one of the most difficult songs from George to sing but I do really enjoy not only his voice was magical but its music too.
How can you not love this song!
Какая красивая песня! Благодарю вас Джордж Майкл за это наслаждение! Браво маэстро! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Как жаль, что не вернуть его...
George Michael had such beautiful vocals. I can feel the sorrow, the pain in the rises in his pitch. The lyrics are there, not hidden. RIP to a legend. ❤️
La musica di George arriva subito al cuore. come non innamorarsi dei suoi pezzi musicali? ovunque tu sia... sempre con noi.
Is there nothing that this man couldn't sing, pop, soul, blues, smooth jazz, he was talented from head to toe made every song sound great. His kind of talent will never be seen again.
He was indeed special
so true
never....so sad
“We could have showed them all, We should have seen love through”. Haunting lyrics
This is my favorite George Michael song ever!! I still have my Faith CD since Christmas of 1987... His voice melts me like butter on the his song... He was one of my favorite male singers. I always wanted to be a piano bar singer... This song was on my list. Fab song!! R.I.P. Sweet George.......
Que falta êle faz. Existem pessoas que não deveriam morrer. George Michael é uma delas.Mas êle continua vivo na nossa memória e coração.
Te amamos, George.
Absolute classic! Worthy of Sinatra covering this if he were alive. So mellow and exquisite in every way. A song I can listen to on repeat for an entire day. Thank you George.
Yes!SINATRA FOR SURE, COULD SING THIS.
You Sinatra called George the greatest voice of the 20th century
Adoro esta canción💟
This makes me cry. I hope people appreciate the complexity of this melody that George delivers with ease. So talented. Wish he'd done more jazz. RIP 🎶
It is waaay beyond his other work. He did this live sometimes, with no special effects whatsoever, even when he had just survived pneumonia. The man was a vocal genius.
I’m in tears, revisiting all his other videos. The memories surrounding the sounds have hardened so…
A timeless ballad! Just perfect!
Loved his ballads! Soulful, Soft and Beautiful. Pure shame he couldn't realize his true value as a human and musician. Just like so many others.😢
As a teenager back in the 80s George Michael was my first teenage crush. Loved his music back then n still do now in 2022. Beautiful voice. A good artist gone too soon🥰
George Michael. The best singer of all times. This mans talent knew no bounds, it was pure poetry from the depths of his soul.
This song is a masterpiece that I could listen to on repeat for days on end.
RIP George. I still can't believe you are physically gone.
George wrote this beautiful, timeless song....what a talent!!~!!
One of George's best. The poignant words...the silky smooth richness of his voice which just reaches into the depths of your soul.
That smooth richness is the result of pushing a lot of air. It's a technique...
Amen sis! You’ve said it all!! It seeps into the depths of your soul….melancholy, yet beautiful! A beautiful soulful voice that’s gone way too soon!
Simply The Best!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Loved this song when I was still in my 20's still loved it now. His voice is just one of a kind 🙂💖
Masterpiece. He is so beautiful ❤
My favorite song of his. By far, a work of perfection.
LO RECUERDO SIEMPRE , CON SU TAN HERMOSA Y MELODIOSA VOZ . NO TE OLVIDARE JAMAZ 💖. Me produce una gran MELANCOLIA , el ESCUCHARTE. Te fuistes , demasiado PRONTO !! 😇🙏.
I was a teen in the 80's and this is one of many great songs I loved by George Michael. He never wanted to be remembered as just another cheesy pop star, but as a real artist. He reached that goal, I remember him as a real artist. RIP George Michael.
I regret not ever seeing him live. I’ve always loved his voice
His Cover to Cover show was the best concert I've ever seen, up there with the reunited Duran Duran in 2004.
So do I would have loved to have watched him live just to late
Me too!
I did twice on his faith tour.... Let me tell you. I’ve been to many many concerts. George Michaels still to this day was THEE BEST EVER concert! His entertainment of dancing and his voice was like it was lip synced. He was flawless. True gift to us all while he was on this earth.
Thank you George. My growing up wouldn’t of been fun without you sir.
He didn't make it easy for us to see him in the USA. He did a concert tour here and then didn't come back to the USA to tour for 17 years. Won money at the casino and was able to buy a good ticket to see him when he came back 17 years later. It was even got better. My seat ended up being behind the projector used for his light show. They had set up a special section on the floor for those of us that ended up having our view blocked by the projector. Jackpot again! Floor seats! He was fabulous! It was a fun concert. He died eight years later never to return to visit us.
I love love love this song.
I’ve jumped down a George Michael rabbit hole. And I’m rediscovering so many of his songs I’ve always loved.
This song pulls all of my heart strings. He is quite beautiful too 😍
So sad that George isn't still with us, filling the radio waves with new songs....there will never be another like him!! He wrote this song. What a talent!!
12 years passed, and I still love this song♥️
First, listen to the many layers of tonality he posses, then pay close attention to how smoothly he connects and phrases. The crescendo is musically challenging, yet he makes it seem effortlessly beautiful.
One of the most romantic songs ever made. RIP Mr. Michael
Romantic, almost im guess
This song is not romantic, it’s more a Melancholic type of song. The lyrics are “You are far, when I could have been your star 🌟, You’ve listened to people, who scared you to death and from my heart.” That’s not romance, it’s a song who’s heart has been broken.
The song does does express heartbreak. What makes it romantic is that he's pouring his heart and expressing heartbreak in his own way. Most songs like this can be both. I hear both.
Rest in Paradise George, you were truly the best during your time here with us. I miss the great music you made. Songs with great meaning, music today is not the same. We miss you George 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I really wish he had done an album of jazz standards. Such a great voice.
There are only a few times a voice is gifted to us. This is one of them.
The perfect song to have on your stereo whilst you sit by lowlight and get drunk to all your regrets.
All of his songs in my eyes were absolute perfection
This song has it all - the thumping bass, the piano, the smooth retro bluesy feel, and the soulful voice of one of the greatest pop stars ever. RIP, George.
*"Kissing a Fool"* was George's working title for
the stellar album that would become "Faith"......
🎙George's vocals are like velvet on the ear.... ❤
Еще один шедевр! Как легко он её исполняет, не неповторимые моменты. Супер!
Wow I heard this song over 20 yrs ago and it still sounds great. What a great singer he was.
Always a wonder to relish his voice, melody and music🎶..... A subtle genius!
He’s so missed, I only think of all the new music that could have come from one of the best voices that ever was.
Yes, George and Frank Sinatra forever.❤
Sounded classic when it came out.
Sounds classic today.
Then it is a classic.
Like with all of George's music, he was so ahead of the curve that his music sounds like it could have been released last week. Although after the the trash that was performed at the January 2020 Grammy's, this generation most likely wouldn't appreciate the incredible talent of George Michael. What a shame at what passes for music today.
This song takes me back toy childhood . So much nostalgia 😢
Didn't you play Randy the cop in the 'What's goin' down?' episode of 'That's My Momma' ?
Yes, it seems that that tune was his personal come out
Iria me casar ao som dessa linda música. No dia do casamento esqueci o disco em casa !Nos separamos,o amor acabou.Sobrou o amor pela canção e pelas duas filhas que fizemos
So beautiful ❤️ George was beautiful inside out. His talent was extraordinary! This and Cowboys and Angels were 2 of his best pop/jazz numbers. 💔 Gone too soon. ☹️
A song with deep meaning ❤
Love the song, most especially the melody. Missing George Michael RIP 🙏
He was such a talented artist. He could do it all and that's why his music still resonates so strongly today. Will listen to his music forever❤️❤️❤️❤️
Sólo me tomó unos segundos escuchar esta canción para enamorarme completamente de ella. No encuentro palabras para describir lo que siento cada vez que la escucho. Mágica, creo.
He is irreplaceable. What a loss. I can't stop to crying for him. We fans will never forget George. We love you George. Rest in peace. Say hello to Freddie and have a great time in heaven. ❤❤
The epitome of Class! 💖🙏🏽🖤
Absolute Timeless Masterpiece + Flawless vocals! 💯
...so many childhood memories when first heard in 88 - always reminds me of Christmas time 🎄💖
The pure essence of this song is absolute GENIUS! 🎼🎶 We definitely lost a Gem! 💎 I LOVE GEORGE MICHAEL!♥️🎵
