I cannot get over how Stockfish made a rook instead of a queen. It had no reason to do that other than to clown Mittens. This is a robot made to play _perfect chess_ and it _intentionally thought_ “I can do this winning sequence with a queen, but I think it’d be funnier to do it with rook.”
I think if it calculates a forced mate with a minor piece it just does that and doesn't bother calculating a queen.
@Midn8 Yeah, that's correct. The modern engines want to use the least force to get the best results, so if they calculate that with a rook is fine, then they take a rook. As well, all we know the queen is so powerful that, in some positions, there are possible stalemates.
The best part is, if Stockfish made a queen it would’ve been M4
But instead it made a rook and made it M6
It deliberately chose the longer sequence to clown Mittens in the best way possible

Engines try to minimize the loss of material (usually measured as centipawns) so stockfish promotes a piece that guarantees victory with the smallest loss of material.
Or, he has conscience and is a big troll.

And then it allows Mittens to sacrifice its rook with check and make a queen. And then with checks, it forces Mittens to sacrifice its queen and pawn. And finally, with only one legal move left to make, Mittens is forced to checkmate itself. Levy's commentary made it all the better, I'm new to chess but what an amazing sequence.

Why would Stockfish even do this? Wouldn't it still be more logical to take a queen and only take say knight for rare cases? It's like Stockfish has personality and wanted to show disrespect

@Daniel Survivor Due to the way stockfish works, it has to also consider the moves its opponent will play. Maybe it calculated the best outcome for itself would be when Mittens doesn't take the promoted piece. However, if the piece was a queen Mittens would absolutely take it.

the move isn't something IMs or GMs easily see, due to it weakening the king for an investment near impossible to fully calculate. Mittens and Stockfish are able to find this move because the calculations they perform identify that the king is not any more endangered than if g5 was not played, or rather the investment is more worth than not in the long run. Players in the lower ladder will see g5 with the simple intention of chasing the bishop for it not moving far enough backwards, without realizing the importance of defending the king in the early stages of the game. It's the difference between making an educated guess and a random guess- both people may have gotten it correct, but the random guesser used no logic

I love the analogy of Stockfish being the older brother because in typical older brother fashion, on any given day, the little brother hates him. Big brother just seems to delight in tormenting little brother when it’s just the two of them. Every time they compete against each other, it’s just utter torture. Every time they’re supposed to be working together, nothing little brother does or wants to do gets any approval. But then, one day, little brother shows up with bruises and points out a bully on the playground… and big brother flips.
It’s that moment where you’ve spent your entire life under someone’s heel and all of a sudden, the boot lifts up and you see it float over to stomp someone else. On some level, you pity the poor soon-to-be victim and you still resent the boot for doing what it does. But, it’s still big brother, and nobody messes with you while he’s around… except him… as soon as the stupid cat gets squashed.
Gotham is the type of person who'd turn plain old chess into a literal war documentary.

I have played Mittens a lot, and I have found out his personality. He's like a kid, with the power of knowledge, with mate patterns, etc. If he wants a piece, he will go for it, no matter what. You will need to use that piece as a bait, unfortunately. But use it for a trap, because he will risk everything for that piece.
It looks like Mittens plays really aggressive, trappy chess, which makes it devastating to human players, but suboptimal against another machine that doesn't make tactical blunders.
Until it learns how to beat machines that don’t know how to think outside the box.

In another youtuber's video He had Stockfish on different elo ranks therefore different power levels to fight Mittens. He figured out that Mittens' true elo is in between 2800-2900, as at 2900 elo Stockfish practically beat Mittens every time, but 2800 elo, Mittens was still able to somewhat defeat Stockfish.
