Why Russia renews its efforts to take the embattled city of Avdiivka in the Donbas | DW News

  • Russian and Ukrainian troops continue to fight fierce and deadly battles in eastern Ukraine.
Bakhmut is the city that's come to symbolize slow-moving battles at high human cost.
But there is another frontline town in eastern Ukraine, that is also home to crucial Ukrainian resistance. That city is Avdiivka. It's almost completely encircled by Russian forces. Much like Bakhmut to the north.

It like Bakhmut represents a key road junction in the area as well as a geographically strategic high ground area. So whoever controls these 2 towns = controls the northern approach into Donetsk. If Ukraine can push Russian forces back in these sectors to swing to the southeast then Donetsk becomes difficult to hold and like Kherson may be abandoned by Russian forces allowing Ukrainian forces to possibly push them back to the Krynka River. 🤔

I don't think she is quick to point out issues Ukraine is facing - I think that you simply don't like the facts you are hearing.

In situations where one army is surrounded by another, often there is no hurry on the part of the surrounding force to end the siege. It can take days, weeks, or even months but one thing is sure, with each passing day the besieged troops get weaker, hungrier, colder, and more discouraged. The longer the siege, the less they are able to fight. Russia has no interest in wading into the rubble to root out the last remaining Ukrainians from Bakhmut. They'll wander out of the ruins on their own when they get hungry enough.

    • Mozes Marcus
Mozes Marcus 2 months ago +3

There are still supplies coming in to Bakhmut, including enough food for the Ukranians, which means that the ukranian presence isn't really under siege, and more involved in brutal urban warfare. Bakhmut looks surrounded, but isn't really

Let's talk about munitions. How many news outlets have done so called on scene reports? Sending a cameraman out to film the soldiers loading and firing munitions in defense of their homeland? I believe it's too many to count. Now ask yourself, would a news outlet risk the life of their employee while reporting how the city is being absolutely pounded nonstop with missiles? Is it strange that no actual explosion is heard while the camera is rolling? Do you think the soldiers they interviewed would actually have the time and attention needed to stand and give an interview? These on scene reports are not on scene. That would be irresponsible to have a soldier load and fire weapons aimed at the enemy and fire said weapons at the enemy while a civilian employee of mainstream media is standing right next to them. Here's my point. Ukraine needs munitions to fight Russia. Yet they waste a few every time they do these reports. They load a weapon and fire weapons for the camera to get a good shot for the story. Multiply that by how many stories you see every day. What an awful waste of resources.

Wonder the cost of holding out when you are surrounded and being bombed from all three sides. If I was a Russian general I'd rather not take the toll of storming the cities and simply keep smashing whatever is in it and take it bits by bits. Remember how Russians won the battle of stalingrad by going all around it and starving it inspite the city being one of their own. After loosing the first Chechen war they did the same thing with Grozny in the second war. This is textbook Russian way of offence.

Russian stockpiles even the museum type T62s "stored" in sibiran Taiga run low. Ukraine on the other hand receives modern equipment. Trickling in as of now but once production´s ramped up there´s endless supply for them. The red dragon allready smelled the carcass that was the russian bear.

Why would Russia need to retain those T62s? What for. On the other hand, Ukraine receives equally obsolete hardware from NATO stockpiles. You have no idea what you are talking about

there's a big difference between being low on shells and being out of shells. Ukraine has been low on shells since last summer, but they can somehow still manage to fire 4.000 shells every day anyway.

Alexander Semchenko disagrees and says no stopping short of the Polish border. Ukrainian political scientist, critic, blogger and member of now banned political party 'Nation', Alexander Semchenko disappeared from public view at start of SMO, and we all feared the worst. There was a huge sigh of relief when he reappeared a year later with harrowing account of life underground being pursued by the SBU, the Ukrainian gestapo. It took all this while for him, with the help of his party members to escape the clutches of the SBU, and finally flee the territory controlled by the Kyiv regime.
He attributes his survival to support from among the local population, against the ever present danger of being denounced. He thought his number was up when recognised at a check point, but luckily the person in question did not give him away, but instead gave him tips on how to get through the remaining checkpoints.

The AFU is suffering from ammo shortages, but it is the same for Russia, the same goes for mobilization shortages. And winning time cuts both ways too, it is not as if the Russian ladies would start popping out fully formed Wagners and in terms of ammo and equipment, it plays in the hands of Ukraine as the West has the capability of providing ammo and equipment, and we are two mayor economic blocks, the USA and the EU plus others like South Korea and Japan, we can outproduce Russia easily, we can even outproduce Russia plus China. If anybody thinks otherwise, he/she may take a quick look at the brand of his car and think and where it comes from.

    • Bruno R.
      Bruno R. 2 months ago +3

The problem is not about outproducing Russia but at what pace it can be done, it can take years for those ammo, especially artillery ammo, to reach the frontlines. This is what the usual "analysis" - very biased, by the way, isn't covering. There are articles describing how much the Ukranians are outgunned and how fast they're burning trough their artillery. Once they have no more artillery, the Ukranian fate is sealed. All the West can do at this point is prolong the war.

    • Michael Otieno

If Ukraine shall benefit from time why are they opposed to a ceasefire if it helps them.

    • Enric Martinez
      Enric Martinez 2 months ago

      @Michael Otieno
      It is not the same:
In a slow attrition warfare, they continue keeping the enemy fixed and loosing manpower and material. If the attrition continues, even if it were equal on both sides, the side that has the industrial advantage will win in the medium or long term.
Also, one important part of the Ukrainian strategy is right now to avoid that the Russian troops can gather in enough numbers to form an "attack fist": When a group gathers the Ukrainians disperse it with either light artillery and mortars or HIMARS, aviation (when available) and heavy artillery.
A ceasefire means that the attrition stops and the Russians, which right now do have the advantage in manpower and material (in numbers) could have the opportunity of regrouping, forming a sufficiently large attack fist and break the front.
There is also another aspect to "a ceasefire", one that would play even if the Russians had taken over Ukraine or the West stopped providing weapons and allowing the Russians to take over a good part or the entire country: Guerilla warfare.
We saw that in the Battle of Kyiv, there was very little Western help, the Ukrainian civilians themselves began setting up small workshops to make Molotov cocktails, and a good part of the drone warfare we are seeing right now was born during this phase.
It is thus preposterous to think that the underground groups would stop fighting just because the official armies agreed to a ceasefire.
This is BTW something that people who claim that Western help just prolongs the conflict should keep in mind: If we hadn't supplied heavier weapons, the war would still go on for years as a guerilla war, Afghanistan style. Just because an army rolls into a country, it does not mean that everything will be Peace and Love. The impact on food prices and gas would thus surely be the same even if the West had not imposed any sanctions.
Worse: The West could wake up to disgruntled Ukrainian terrorists.
The _only_ way that the Russians could have taken over Ukraine and the conflict could have ended soon would have been if the West had allied itself with Russia and killed away all the Ukrainian population or a good part of it.

Another "decisive battle", this time in Avdivka. If Russian forces are so malnourished, running out of ammunition, "fighting with shovels" and "running out of missiles" since March 2022, how is it possible that another encirclement is happening so close to Bakhmut?

    • Henrik Schmidt

@Oscar Toledo They might 'lose' it or they might not. Either way, the fact it's taken russia a year to take it is embarrassing when they thought they were going to take the whole country in a few days. The fact that russia has lost 170k troops when they thought they were going to lose maybe 1k is even more embarrassing. And the fact you wrote 'losses' instead of 'loses' is the icing on the cake : D
