Why Russia renews its efforts to take the embattled city of Avdiivka in the Donbas | DW News

- Published on Mar 23, 2023 veröffentlicht
- Russian and Ukrainian troops continue to fight fierce and deadly battles in eastern Ukraine.
Bakhmut is the city that's come to symbolize slow-moving battles at high human cost.
But there is another frontline town in eastern Ukraine, that is also home to crucial Ukrainian resistance. That city is Avdiivka. It's almost completely encircled by Russian forces. Much like Bakhmut to the north.

"My Sons are in the Cemetery, nobody needs me anymore" Right in the feels, that poor woman.
Absolutely brutal. 😢
She can thank Zelensky and the cabal around him for the death and destruction around her. Indeed, it is an unimaginable tragedy
@gdi wolverine male 2j am sure the Ukrainians blame zelensky for the warm in sure Russia isn't hated across the entirety of Ukraine
That statement from that old woman has really touched me.
Its so sad what the Ukrainians are going through.
@yunusa labaran Do you not understand that Ukraine is fighting for it's very existence. It is ruzzia that started this war.
@Art McTeagle Nice joke
It's the choice they made themselves
Very concerned wish peace to Ukraine
Does Ukraine wish peace for itself?.....
@Ancestral Blood Zelenski won't negotiate
@Ancestral Blood wish you live in peace and never undergo injustice. Someone didn't deserve the war and the victims are of both sides innocence is ripped
Wow, you've really made a change. I bet that saved like 4 Ukrainians
She is becoming the most honest analysts on this show
It like Bakhmut represents a key road junction in the area as well as a geographically strategic high ground area. So whoever controls these 2 towns = controls the northern approach into Donetsk. If Ukraine can push Russian forces back in these sectors to swing to the southeast then Donetsk becomes difficult to hold and like Kherson may be abandoned by Russian forces allowing Ukrainian forces to possibly push them back to the Krynka River. 🤔
Marina Miron top unbiased analyst very refreshing to see. Please give her more airtime to inform us properly.
3:00 old man with health issues gathering fire wood is heart breaking. Say what you will on politics and Russ vs Nato. I really feel for the old and young caught up in the war.
gut-wrenching
SLAVA UKRAINI 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
Made me cry, poor people. Slava Ukraine
They can leave, they want to stay: let arrogance be their daily meal !
I like Marina, i have listened to her before. An intelligent lady, she understNds all that is going on in Ukraine and explains herself well. This interviewer with DW is very good too, he lets people answer the good questions he asks.
The issue I have with her is, she is quick to point out problems that Ukraine is facing, but absolutely blind to the massive issues facing the occupiers
Yes, she's "very" insightful and understands this war better than most generals. Or so it comes across.
@daledelatte9607 she always gives good dialogue from both sides of the situation. And it's good for her if she emphasises Ukraines 🇺🇦 problems
I don't think she is quick to point out issues Ukraine is facing - I think that you simply don't like the facts you are hearing.
I also think that you may be unhappy because you want Russia to lose more than you want Ukraine to win. As long as Russia loses you don’t care about how many Ukrainians die.
Is Avdiivka on a hill surrounded by flat lands? I heard that about one of the front line cities. High ground gives the defenders another advantage.
I feel sad to ukraine who fight alone in this war they need more support troops and more weapon to fight russia
@Mama Z Heartless. No one in Ukraine asked to be murdered.
the Russians have tried to capture Adiivka since 2014, it is still Ukraine🤡
Avdiivka is unlikely to fall soon
I mean it has been on the frontlines since 2014 - 9 years of war
It even fell to the DPR before being recaptured by Ukraine
Russian army was not attacking avdivka from 2014...so u can not give that 9 years time frame...no matter how heavily fortified a town or city is...if you cut the supply lines completely from all the 4 sides...u are lost...
check a map
Avdeevka
One meter before the cliff, you stand, one meter further, you fall ...
Someone please comfort the poor old lady and tell her that world needs her!! ❤
off you trot then
She's saying this so they will leave her alone.
Even though her sons are in the cemetery that doesn't means she has to stay. She is suicidal and selfish. Putting strains on the workers and army. The workers have family too !
@Clayron Hilaire Tessier why troll at a time like this? people stay because they have no choice. not because they want to be on TV or hit by a missile or something.
She is the most honest, unbiased, professional analyst i have listen to recently👍
Really? One of the most biased analyst
@QARNAIN cat babu cat Have you read the sun recently ? Or do you mean of DW?
I was biased towards her in the very beginnings, but he's right, she one of the best. What she says is real, it has hand and feet. I am glad I can hear her reporting and analysing.
¿honest, unbiased?
She would make a much more valuable contribution if she actually left her warm office and went to the front to fight.
In situations where one army is surrounded by another, often there is no hurry on the part of the surrounding force to end the siege. It can take days, weeks, or even months but one thing is sure, with each passing day the besieged troops get weaker, hungrier, colder, and more discouraged. The longer the siege, the less they are able to fight. Russia has no interest in wading into the rubble to root out the last remaining Ukrainians from Bakhmut. They'll wander out of the ruins on their own when they get hungry enough.
There are still supplies coming in to Bakhmut, including enough food for the Ukranians, which means that the ukranian presence isn't really under siege, and more involved in brutal urban warfare. Bakhmut looks surrounded, but isn't really
And every day hundreds of orcs get taken out by drone dropped grenades 😉
aviddvka had the biggest coking plant in Europe, and they kept it running through the whole period 2014-2022, even when it was shelled: they never shut it down because they wouldn’t have been able to start it again. I dont know when in this last year they finally had to give up on the plant
Slava Ukraine…. Freedom prevails….🇵🇭👍🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
This dude as an anchor is solid, better have more of him 👍
It’s great listening to Marina’s sober analysis 👍
I wonder who their drunk ones would sound 🤣
@Enric Martinez Look at some footage of Russian soldiers and you'll know 😉
Marina Miron gives great unbiased information. Unlike some other analysts who only talk about good news on the Ukrainian side, Marina doesn't shy away from problems and issues that Ukrainians are facing, such as some European partners starting to lose faith in the Ukrainian’s counter offensive ability.
It has nothing to do with losing faith. If you dont have the stocks you cant do anything. Britain has enough ammo to fight a full scale artillery fight for 5 days. Turns out that you cant always just buy what you want with money, if there are no providers.
Ukraine hasn't even assembled their new Western Tank formations yet and European Allies are already starting to lose faith? Give them a chance to win, jeez.
Hope we will have peace
@DW News, you guys should put the name of the presenters in the video description. That way you can search for specific hosts.
I rarely have hateful feeling for anything through my decades life, but this Russian government truly get me deeply into it. Russian premitive aggression belongs to the cave-dwelling ancestors while they had no choice but fight for survival; however, what russian is using all the human destructive inventions for WHAT?????!
Be mad at Zelensky
Зачем вы бомбили Югославию?
They should unite the people that feel that they have nothing to live for that's why they stay there with the soldiers that lost everything😢😢 ergo need😅
Best defense is the best offense.
Nice saying but not true. Best defense is to sit in fox hole let attacks try to attack as they are doing in Bakhmut. People not understand. Ratio is as high as 12 Russian dying for every Ukrainian. It's unfortunate Ukrainian are dying but if they take offensive without armor support it will be much greater lose.
@Eric Murphy no one but ukraine is claiming anywhere close to that 😂
@Eric Murphy Russia heave 10 to 1 artillery, how do you come to that absurd number?
It's like a mini version of The Eastern Front in 1942.
.... and it seems it is going to end the same way ... yet again
it is the same war, repeating what happend in spring 1943. German's spring counter offense, in east Ukraine.
All Out Of Bubble Gum Yes, you are all out of Bubble Gum .... you obviously have no idea how WW2 ended.
@gdi wolverine male 2 and what is your point there? He was plainly talking about what happened in ukraine during wwII not the entirety of it lol
Except it's Slavs killing, Slavs now.
All the frontline cites are going to be fortified... When the media asks "Why can't Russia just take it over?" BECAUSE OF THE ENTRENCHMENTS
I'd love to see Germans present the news from the German state news network
Good informative report
The woman seemed very truthful
Poor lady who's sons are in the grave ,Where will I go to. My heart bleeds
Gosh this is so sad.
Was that an MG42 used by the Ukrainian soldier? A definite plus, the best infantry weapon ever produced.
That is an M60
@Leanback Lenny No definitely not an M60
Probably some variant of it, i am thinking maybe mg3. The mg3 uses a nato round 7.62x51 where the mg42 uses a 7.92x57 mouser round that i am sure is not readily available if at all.
@Leanback Lenny That is either an MG42 or some derivative of it, not the US made trash
@Rudy Topo I am guessing you are correct. The 7.92 would be a problem to find
My heart is bleeding seeing and feeling the pain of this woman. We want the war to stop. It’s not good at all 😊
The answer to the question is simple, it is because they have lost everywhere else and direly need a victory.
Exactly this is embarrassing they couldn't even take bakkut after months of fighting Russia is a joke and should not threaten nato because they would mop the floor with putting and what'd left of his military
This guy has the most amazing voice. His reporting is also great but his voice is just extraordinary. I cannot but to focus on it. It is one in million if not billion.
Every battle is the fiercest of them all, first Mariupol was the fiercest of them all, then Bakhmut.. what next ?
7:45 “The European allies are losing faith on the Ukrainian offensive” what is she talking about??? No western country is losing faith in Ukraine or becoming less interested in helping it. Quite the opposite.
« a possibility »…😉
Maby she living in real world a bit, outside MSM.
Lmao only a few days ago the Czech leader came out and said that the 'spring/summer counteroffensive' is Ukraine's last chance before the West gives up on Ukraine.
@O'Connor He said that in the sense of "we gave them what tanks we could spare, if they can't win with these then theyre gonna have to win without them".
@C Hashtag nice play with pharses. hahaha
Bakhmut looks to me like a punch of Ukrainian forces through Russian lines. Bakhmut must not fall or Ukrainians will have to retake it again. Why repeat when you already have that area.
The world is full of sorrow and this guy sends people to war ... cant believe this.
To the person from Kings College. It’s a war, not a special military operation.
She's good. (Marina) She's always been spot on in the military details from both sides. Always enjoy listening to her. Very intelligent lady.
It surprises me how much she knows. I wonder what kind of sources she has for her information. Also my girl did her eyebrows in a rush this morning lol
If they can't take Bahkmut how are they supposed to take avdivka?😂
The priority is to destroy Ukraine army then conquer land after the army is gone and Ukraine is falling on that trap the reason why this town is failing is because of bakhmut reinforcement otherwise Russia wouldn't be able to penetrate
@OBERT MQUNYANA
Rubbish.
wait and see
Do they have adequate resources for an offensive and the resources in keeping the cities even if they succeed.
They are our Ukrainian cities. Citizens would keep cities no nead millitary police at huge numbers/
@vadymvv Ukraine will not win this conflict, negotiations is your only hope. In fact the longer this continues, Ukraine might end up being a landlocked country.
hello everyone, i support Ukraine and i feel very sad that they are going through very difficult time, but in my opinion NATO and US must not provoke Russia and must not ignore what Russia said before, more getting involvement mean more damages in Ukraine more death of innocent Ukrainians, helping is good but.....my fear is in this war their helping is becoming more dangerous for rest of the untouched parts of Ukraine and Ukrainians..💛💙
Haha what happened did the shock waves from all the explosions displace her eyebrow along with the people 😂
Marina give a good and insightful conversation of the immediate events of the hour....I like Your Green Sweater there in England..lol
Let's talk about munitions. How many news outlets have done so called on scene reports? Sending a cameraman out to film the soldiers loading and firing munitions in defense of their homeland? I believe it's too many to count. Now ask yourself, would a news outlet risk the life of their employee while reporting how the city is being absolutely pounded nonstop with missiles? Is it strange that no actual explosion is heard while the camera is rolling? Do you think the soldiers they interviewed would actually have the time and attention needed to stand and give an interview? These on scene reports are not on scene. That would be irresponsible to have a soldier load and fire weapons aimed at the enemy and fire said weapons at the enemy while a civilian employee of mainstream media is standing right next to them. Here's my point. Ukraine needs munitions to fight Russia. Yet they waste a few every time they do these reports. They load a weapon and fire weapons for the camera to get a good shot for the story. Multiply that by how many stories you see every day. What an awful waste of resources.
Thank you, Marina. I am very glad you are at DW. Your analysis is highly appreciated.
true
Wonder the cost of holding out when you are surrounded and being bombed from all three sides. If I was a Russian general I'd rather not take the toll of storming the cities and simply keep smashing whatever is in it and take it bits by bits. Remember how Russians won the battle of stalingrad by going all around it and starving it inspite the city being one of their own. After loosing the first Chechen war they did the same thing with Grozny in the second war. This is textbook Russian way of offence.
That DW guy is so flamboyant, love it!
Russia plan is never to have a plan..
Victory for Ucraina 🇺🇦💪🏻🙏🏻💙💛🇪🇺🇺🇦💓☮️
Remember Adivka, Backmut, as been entrenched from 2014 so don't make it look like the Russians not doing anything
That what happens with states wich became USA slaves. EU will be the next USA's cannon fodder. EU must develope their own army and conduct policy in their own interest but not support conflict in interests of USA and making Nuclear war real.
Meanwhile Russia has invaded Ukraine in case you missed it.
You need air-support, also the attrition rate of bodies must be high on the Ukrainian side as well.
if it flies - it dies, neither side can have air support due to very good SAMs
6:1 dead russianas rate. Do the math.
@Darx Kies 6 Russian for every Ukrainian. Not can do the math when Russian not know themselves.
@Eric Murphy in what game? ahh from ukropropaganda
@Eric Murphy Everyone should ask himself: what happened with 200.000 russians that went into Ukraine last year. Pro tip: most of them are dead. That is why russia had to recruit more cannon fodder in autumn to replace them.
As a Pakistani I fully support love and respect Ukraine sovereignty and territorial integrity from Pakistan 🙂🇵🇰🇺🇦☺️🥰. May Allah SWT bless Ukraine and its beautiful people from Pakistan 🙂🇵🇰🇺🇦☺️☺️
As a Pakistani what do you think of democracy in your country?
But they not support you tho 😅
Poor Ronaldo, oh no... it's Poor Pakistan
@P McD Pakistan is a democracy. Just in case you do not know.
He ditched the last question 😅😅😅
Actually, the reason of such fierce fighting around Avdeevka is that these good Ukrainian soldiers are shelling nearby city of Donetsk every day, killing tens civilians every day. They shelling randomly on city full of people. But DW will never tell about this side of the situation.
PLAN? 🤔 Ohhhh, I understand. Let me help you. The Russian plan is, thay "PLAAAAN" on taking a "BEEEAT DOOOWN" of epic proportions. 😂
Go ahead Russia. Lets give good lesson to US and NATO.
to do a gesture of good will ofc. Moscow is very kind, and cooperative when u show strength
Moscow? Like the buildings?
@P McD Moscow Kingdom, Moscow Empire - its the name of their nation civilisation.
New plan as they can't take Bakhmut.
I couldn't stop fixating on that lady's eyebrows. They're crooked & I can't tell if it's because she drew them on wrong or if they're natural. It's.. fascinating
I like those thumbnail's video title writers 😂😂😂👍 That's a quality 😂😂😂😂
dogputin: "Plan? There is no plan, just keep throwing bodies into the meat grinder".
🎯💯✅
Zelensky has the same plan
As the Leopard tanks and jet pilots are still training for a switch by October its going to be cold and soggy again. NATO must fight the war war
Good question at the end about pro Russian civilians... I get the feeling Ukrainian nationalist don't treat them very nice judging off of the way civilians that don't want to go to the front are treated by the AFU
"Take Avdivka by March! June at the latest. Or a bit later but soon. thats an order"
😂 If DW says so prepare for the opposite 🤣
Is that a German MG42 at 5:50?
Russian stockpiles even the museum type T62s "stored" in sibiran Taiga run low. Ukraine on the other hand receives modern equipment. Trickling in as of now but once production´s ramped up there´s endless supply for them. The red dragon allready smelled the carcass that was the russian bear.
You know nonsensical comments won't stop the red army, right?
@Neil Nelson What army? You mean that rag-tag rent a soldier gang? It´s obvious the paper bear won´t stand two hours if facing NATO. Russia´s just hot air and many many drunk stories about their glorious past. Russia Today`s more like the ruins of Bakhmut.
Why would Russia need to retain those T62s? What for. On the other hand, Ukraine receives equally obsolete hardware from NATO stockpiles. You have no idea what you are talking about
🤣🤣🤣
@Ran dy 🤣🤣🤣🤣
My heart feel sad for all Ukrainians . thankyou for all those countries that help them with everything they need.dont give up hope God will carry you through this battle. SLAVA Ukraine 🇺🇦 ♥,,,,,jasmine from South Africa
SLAVA RUSSIA 🇷🇺
God help Ukrainian people Amen
40 kms away you were! Not fated to get nearer? Went but chickened out at the end?
At times we must be wise to know who to fight with it is wisdom to just give in with full understanding that the giant will sleep ... or nothing stays the same . So for how long will this fight go on at the ego of a leader
Si esta hablando de Rusia, Rusia no es un gigante, es un enano con zapatos de tacones altos.
??? Avdiivka was already at the frontlines from 2014, the destruction is not only from now.
.🇺🇦 Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦
I hope the PATRIOT will be in Kyivv before they attack Crimea to protect the city from possible Russian retaliation once Ukraine started taking back Crimea their defensive capability should be in place already to make sure those sophisticated missile by Russia will be hit by their defence. Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦 🇺🇦
😂😂😂😂😂
There is no chance of taking back Crimea
In an autocracy "the secret police is the civil service." __ The KGB runs Russia on the day to day basis.
Long Live Ukraine Greets from Croatia
Slava Zukkini!
@Bogo Suvadil Russia will live long but without Manchuria once China moves in. A country of a billion people, right next door, already renaming russian provinces. Why should they pay for russian oil when they can just move in and take it for free? Pootin thought he was playing the long game but china was playing a longer one : D
Long live what is left of ukraine you mean ?
Marina has cleared out the fluffy stuff - what a pity
Wait, how did bahmut story ended?
*Russia🇷🇺 still occupied oblast Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Kherson, Crimea.*
Russia must end occupation & peace!
Kinda difficult to launch a so called spring counter offensive when you are out of shells isn't it?
Sssss don't mention the shells lol.. let's just keep thinking the Ukrainians are winning 😂😂
there's a big difference between being low on shells and being out of shells. Ukraine has been low on shells since last summer, but they can somehow still manage to fire 4.000 shells every day anyway.
Not really because you don’t need as much artillery shells when invading using combined forces attack. You only need a lot of artillery in a protracted stand off.
kind of hard to launch a counter offensive when there's never been an offensive.
Yeah, you wish. That's why Russians are handed shovels in Bakhmut 😂
Zelensky is kind n good boy, he gives n offer his country for NATO, USA n Rusia to war to test theirs modern weapons. good job Zelensky
Very sad.
It’s unacceptable that Ukrainian defenders have to ration artillery and ammunition.
cope more
glory to Ukraine 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🇺🇦🇺🇲🇯🇵🇩🇪
I believe that time has long past !
@Ridethebomb777 I believe you'll eat your words!
@Fritz Raake I believe, I believe. Ukraine and their beliefs 😏
I like Medvedev , he didn't dismiss the possibility of invading the West of Ukraine as well , although his army has been trying to control a small city in the East for 7 months ! . This is a typical case of denial , and lack of responsibility toward the Russian soldiers who are suffering in the cold and bloody fields , while he sits in his luxerious office .
Alexander Semchenko disagrees and says no stopping short of the Polish border. Ukrainian political scientist, critic, blogger and member of now banned political party 'Nation', Alexander Semchenko disappeared from public view at start of SMO, and we all feared the worst. There was a huge sigh of relief when he reappeared a year later with harrowing account of life underground being pursued by the SBU, the Ukrainian gestapo. It took all this while for him, with the help of his party members to escape the clutches of the SBU, and finally flee the territory controlled by the Kyiv regime.
He attributes his survival to support from among the local population, against the ever present danger of being denounced. He thought his number was up when recognised at a check point, but luckily the person in question did not give him away, but instead gave him tips on how to get through the remaining checkpoints.
4:09 “Because that is from where the Russians are claiming, that the Ukrainians are attacking Donetsk.”
Is this true though DW?
"POTENTIAL" - enough said!!!
Dying and running past those dying isn't going to take much planning for the Orcs
বৈশাখী শুভেচ্ছা দেওয়া হোক
It's unreal what these bastards are doing to this land and innocent folk
Who Nato and Us
NATO and USA done to6 countries in 20 years wile you was sleeping lol
Russia invaded a sovereign country, are you blind
Another L for Puppetlenskyy and his Larpers.
God Bless Putin and his troops 🇷🇺👍🇷🇺..n
The AFU is suffering from ammo shortages, but it is the same for Russia, the same goes for mobilization shortages. And winning time cuts both ways too, it is not as if the Russian ladies would start popping out fully formed Wagners and in terms of ammo and equipment, it plays in the hands of Ukraine as the West has the capability of providing ammo and equipment, and we are two mayor economic blocks, the USA and the EU plus others like South Korea and Japan, we can outproduce Russia easily, we can even outproduce Russia plus China. If anybody thinks otherwise, he/she may take a quick look at the brand of his car and think and where it comes from.
The problem is not about outproducing Russia but at what pace it can be done, it can take years for those ammo, especially artillery ammo, to reach the frontlines. This is what the usual "analysis" - very biased, by the way, isn't covering. There are articles describing how much the Ukranians are outgunned and how fast they're burning trough their artillery. Once they have no more artillery, the Ukranian fate is sealed. All the West can do at this point is prolong the war.
If Ukraine shall benefit from time why are they opposed to a ceasefire if it helps them.
@Michael Otieno
It is not the same:
In a slow attrition warfare, they continue keeping the enemy fixed and loosing manpower and material. If the attrition continues, even if it were equal on both sides, the side that has the industrial advantage will win in the medium or long term.
Also, one important part of the Ukrainian strategy is right now to avoid that the Russian troops can gather in enough numbers to form an "attack fist": When a group gathers the Ukrainians disperse it with either light artillery and mortars or HIMARS, aviation (when available) and heavy artillery.
A ceasefire means that the attrition stops and the Russians, which right now do have the advantage in manpower and material (in numbers) could have the opportunity of regrouping, forming a sufficiently large attack fist and break the front.
There is also another aspect to "a ceasefire", one that would play even if the Russians had taken over Ukraine or the West stopped providing weapons and allowing the Russians to take over a good part or the entire country: Guerilla warfare.
We saw that in the Battle of Kyiv, there was very little Western help, the Ukrainian civilians themselves began setting up small workshops to make Molotov cocktails, and a good part of the drone warfare we are seeing right now was born during this phase.
It is thus preposterous to think that the underground groups would stop fighting just because the official armies agreed to a ceasefire.
This is BTW something that people who claim that Western help just prolongs the conflict should keep in mind: If we hadn't supplied heavier weapons, the war would still go on for years as a guerilla war, Afghanistan style. Just because an army rolls into a country, it does not mean that everything will be Peace and Love. The impact on food prices and gas would thus surely be the same even if the West had not imposed any sanctions.
Worse: The West could wake up to disgruntled Ukrainian terrorists.
The _only_ way that the Russians could have taken over Ukraine and the conflict could have ended soon would have been if the West had allied itself with Russia and killed away all the Ukrainian population or a good part of it.
박현민 Well, this Jesus must have been a relative of Captain Obvious.
How can a small bird like ukraine win a battle as it faced to a huge Lion as Rusia 😀
The Russians have been expecting the Ukrainian counter offensive. It would not likely to end well.
The Russians were routed from Kherson, and there was no element of surprise there.
I hope to stop the war.
By throwing more money into it's flame? Give more money to Ukraine then.
GOD bless Ukraine
More like the lord of the underworld, am I right?
If that's how GOD bless any country, then keep your blessings 😂
У УКРАИНЫ ВМЕСТО БОГА МУМИЯ БАЙДЕН 😅
Gods seem to behave like the people who created them..
Another "decisive battle", this time in Avdivka. If Russian forces are so malnourished, running out of ammunition, "fighting with shovels" and "running out of missiles" since March 2022, how is it possible that another encirclement is happening so close to Bakhmut?
How about not just reading headlines? It was "fighting with assault rifles and shovels", the russians had low ammunition because of logistics and do you see large scale missile attacks anymore?
Decisive battle for now and it will be not important when Ukraine losses the battle
@Oscar Toledo They might 'lose' it or they might not. Either way, the fact it's taken russia a year to take it is embarrassing when they thought they were going to take the whole country in a few days. The fact that russia has lost 170k troops when they thought they were going to lose maybe 1k is even more embarrassing. And the fact you wrote 'losses' instead of 'loses' is the icing on the cake : D
Yup, 2 popular shovels used are the 'thermobaric shovel' and the ole undefendable 'hypersonic shovel'.
And lets not forget about the "Father of All Shovels" - game changing shovel tech...
