- The Resident Evil 4 remake is Game Informer’s cover story for February, and as part of our ongoing features, we’re sharing an extended gameplay walkthrough of the game’s fifth chapter, set right after Leon meets Ashley.
Marcus Stewart, and Alex Van Aken played this chapter at Capcom’s headquarters for our cover story. You'll get a great look at the section we played as well as our commentary for added context. The footage includes extended looks at the church and cemetery sequences, a demonstration of combat and exploration, capping off with a larger slice of the chaotic cabin battle with Luis Serra.

It took 17 years, but Ashley finally learned how to climb down a ladder.
Even though when you play as her in the castle you can climb down a ladder perfectly fine 💀

i love how much ashley and leon are communicating during gameplay!! that was one of the few improvements i was hoping for to make them interact more outside of cutscenes

It's very faithful to the original and yet they added so many new elements I love it. Hopefully it will be a great remake

@Charlon Clarke Capcom, unlike Konami, broke their bad trend and came back strong.
capcom has been pretty good so far with remakes, I have faith this will be a good one

Coloured me impressed, I'm liking the look of this even more. I think they've been very very careful with this remake.
@Strig Wilson agreed. The sound of the chainsaw HAS to sound way more menacing than it did in the preview also. At this point, if they keep everything the way it is, it's not the end of the world BUT I'd be slightly disappointed.
If they added to the iconic 3rd person cam that they revolutionized by giving us an option to CHANGE perspectives mid-game and AT WILL from each of their games: (fixed camera, 3rd person camera and First person camera) THEN this game would be revolutionary in the vodeogaming landscape. Even tho GTA did it first (while in a car), literally NOBODY used any of the other camera angles.
@Donta Faulkner the sound is really what's turning me off, and something about the new REengine just has no OOMPF to anything. Every shot is so lackluster and has the re2 remake effect of guys barely reacting to being shot
they have to be since the original is claimed by many to be one of the best games ever made. Its also inspired almost every 3rd person shooter after it, they will get destroyed if they mess it up.

9:42 The seamless flow from cutscene to gameplay is amazing. This remake is everything we could have asked for. Luis looks way more badass and conniving. His redesign is perfect.

I agree. The transition is incredibly smooth and seamless (as are a few other transitions we’ve seen so far). I like Luis’ redesign as well. He looks like a conniving smartass, but in a good way. It fits his character.
3:28.. Ashley drop from shoulder
it's actually crazy how much they've stayed true to the OG. I actually don't quite mind if Ashley is just as much of a nuisance as she was in the original, it's just apart of the game that I've gotten so used to lmao but the new mechanics as well as old charms of the game is so, SO relieving to see.

@Thomas Greer 3 was a Watertown remake so the complaints were justified...nothing is worse then ff7 remake though...they milked that section so much it was boring for me...I'm not a fan of the original so I guess I wasn't as forgiving.
I never finished the original because the controls were so bad...glad I'll finally get to actually enjoy this game in the future

The fact that we now have a storage box already has me excited, never knew I wanted one in re4 until I saw it, not to mention quick changing guns without having to pause and equip them manually
@koon aguero yeah but having to sell your guns just to bring in some variation did suck. I like the change.

@Beastyyy the latter, previous resident evil games had storage boxes to store excess stuff, RE4 did away with that, you only had the suitcase which could be upgraded, but the remake looks like you can now use a storage box. Which means now you can hoard stuff unlike before where you had to manage your inventory from start to finish
I don't understand what you mean by storage box. Is it not the suitcase where we store our supplies? Or is it like the box in different locations where we can store our stuff and they're all connected together?
This looks even better than I anticipated. They really enhanced the atmosphere and art direction of the game, while maintaining the intense action. I also love the addition of stealth; it’s really going to add to the replay value!
The stealth looks fun. That’s something I love about Last of Us and Evil Within. Helps conserve ammo

The animations are way smoother here, even after prying the gates open a step he takes in that animation leads into the normal walking animation. I love that!!
The transitions are so satisfying to watch. They’re incredibly smooth.

@brotherlylovely I'd like it if they added a quick sidestep/backstep move but, at least there seems to be situational dodges included-
you can see the moment right before the bullhead enemy strikes with the sledgehammer, a "R3 - Evade" prompt appears on the screen

I haven’t played this game in years, but I remember the regenerators were so terrifying first play through, this remake can’t come soon enough.

You're right man but I've played RE4 so many times that I can just kill the damned fool with the knife. I'm actually glad they're nerfing the knife this time. You shouldn't just be able to knife the fuck out of hard mobs like the regenerator.

@Damsen well I mean he does look older then RE2 Remake leon atleast, also RE4 takes place like 6 years after RE2 so sure he will look a little older but not entirely older.
@MMaRsu bro RE4 was made nearly 20 years ago, they ain't gonna give you the old VA as even they won't sound the same, they will sound older. The new VAs are actually really good.
Actually the rain slider is smart. If u want a challenge u can tune it up but if u wanna go easy and do all the side quests it would be nice to tune it down. It’s pretty hard to see the bird nests and hidden objects. First thing I noticed was how the rain was a bit too much. Hopefully capcom will modify this before the release
I was thinking the same, to acheive constant fps. I think this stage with the rain will lag my pc

They probably will since people have complained about it being too much, gotta be honest it is kinda distracting, it does remind me of gta the trilogy a little bit.
How Leon moves is fluid. Love it.
I like the small detail they added where when Leon isn't in full on defensive mode, he'll lower his gun but still keep it at the ready.
The atmosphere and weather looks awesome imo, the stealth elements are surprising but a solid move, as much as I love the classic action of RE4 its great to see more focus on survival horror elements...I haven't been this excited for a game for a long time, it looks so good 🤤

@Sparks Yeah this is some of the worst-looking rain I've ever seen. Everything else looks fine but the rain is awful.
I do have a bias in loving stormy weather lol, looks dope when it gets windy 8 min in but...yeah watching a 2nd time there's a few points where the rain is WAY too bright & also very obv moving with the player like a flat filter, really apparent around 3:00. They should tone down the fake lighting on the rain FX and let the lightning illuminate it like IRL.
It is a bit on the dark side as well in some of the interiors, I generally dont mind dark but I also wouldn't mind if they had more ambient light overall to better show off the environments.
Very detailed, but I hope they add the option to tone down the elements too or allow more lighting in the backgrounds. It gets annoying after awhile, despite being realistic, having to deal with darker atmospheres all the time. Kinda killed it for me in RE 2 remake. I want realistic, but I also want eye pleasing fun too.

It is, but now its gonna be its own weapon attachment you have to trade for in the merchant's shop. You don't have it by default.

It looks incredible my only problem is the rain it looks weird like someone’s just walking behind you with a hose the whole time.
This is due to the rain drops being larger because there's some parts of the game where the rain doesn't look like that. If you're within an Aura of light irl this effect happens with big ol fat drops of water my friend:)
thats a miniscule thing, pretty sure they focused on gameplay quality and not the smaller details in this phase
It not only looks awful, driveclub came out years ago and looks miles better with how the raindrops react, along with batman etc etc in this day and age these rain physics are 1/10
@Momen Salem that’s your opinion and I respect it. To me tho Minecraft has better rain effects than this game currently lol. I just wanna be able to see what’s going on, it’s already dark as is with all the supposed lighting changes but it really just looks like they hid a lot of it behind a crappy rain filter.
The merchant is definitely infected and always has been I can't explain it because we've seen a lot of infected NON transformation characters but he has to be the most consistent and laid back out of them all even Leon had a issue where the plagus tried to change him so I hope one day we can get him back with a little more backstory awesome voice actor as well !!

I'm liking the gameplay. The conversations between Leon and Ashley, the storing of the weapons. The rain is pretty cool also. The sidequests make the game more interesting as well.

Edit : maybe add another layer of wet effect on the character's hair like in real life where if you get a really wet hair, water will start dropping from it

I’m so glad they did mention the rain looking kinda out of place, hoping that it will be adjusted before release, because everything else about this seriously looks perfect! The scene will be really dark but the rain still displays like it’s fully lit.

I really hope the game is as long as the original or longer. The original is one of those games that everything in it fits perfectly. Everything you did had a purpose and felt gratifying to do them.
The producer confirmed that it’s roughly the same length as the original.
I can't speak for overall chapter length but the devs made a point in an interview that they wouldn't be cutting any areas from the original game. So one can assume that game length would be relatively the same unless they've streamlined a bunch of slower missions or mechanics to help speed up the game's pace.
I really love how RE engine deals with character models…

Is so terrifying hearing las plagas squirming when you stab a downed ganado 😨 Also I hope all exclusive weapons are in the game like the infinite rocket luncher you unlock when beating the game on any difficulty, the lazer plaga removal when beating the game on professional mode, Chicago typewriter when beating separate ways(Hopefully that game mode is in this remake), and the hand cannon from beating mercenary with all characters, al maps with five stars.

3:10 it may be a small thing for some but seeing the body of the zombie react to Leon walking into it makes me happy. RE2 had the best physics of the franchise and it looks like they may have then in this game also. This was missing in RE3 remake and village.
I love Leon telling Ashley "Spread out" when pulling the shotgun to fire, little details like that enrich things so much

So far everything is looking good....I'm liking the changes but keeping true to the original. This is going to ge a challenging one just because of how IMPORTANT it is.
Fun fact: I beat the original RE4 over 140 times combined on PS2, PS4, and GameCube. I was addicted to it for like a whole year or 2 when I was a child and then got addicted again years later on PS4. GOAT game for me
I beat it a bunch when I got it on PC. Very fun.
Re4 is such a fun game to play, one of my favourite's in the franchise.

I’m not gonna lie hearing that first “alle estas!” Sent tears of nostalgia and a smile to my face
I love how this game looks so far. I'm so torn between avoiding videos like this so I can be surprised when I play through it myself, or watching them to satisfy my craving to see more of the game.

I'm gonna try to avoid any more into the game. And not watch any reviews untill I've finished it.
I watched a re3r review before I played the game and can't help but feel it tainted my impression of the game for the worst. Although, looking back. I think there were massive chunks of re3 missing and also parts that were handled poorly.
I hope re4 is minimal on laboratory sections
I feel the same way, currently on my 6th play through on 5th different console. The bull guy thing I’m glad I saw, but wished I hadn’t seen the merchant until I played myself. I am so hyped it’s insane though. The standard combat looks so fast it’s unreal!

The milky rain effect’s diabolical - almost the same as that on the GTA remasters that was then reworked to look less milky, but still remained artificial and distracting. Apart from the annoying thickness of much of the droplets, it’s the fact the rain noticeably moves with the camera, instead of creating sense that it exists independent of camera movement

It feels like they took how I remember Resident Evil 4 in my head and then made that into it's own game. I'm beyond excited to play this when it releases.

This is on my list of anticipated games for this year it looks great and I already pre ordered the deluxe edition on steam so I can play this with the original soundtrack, Hopefully I can get my computer fixed soon so I can be able to play this next month.
The chapters will be very different. In the original, the cabin fight is in Chapter 2-2. Here, they have it in Chapter 5. In the original, Chapter 5 was when you first arrived on the island. So, either the game is waaaay longer or the chapter lengths are very different.
They just changed the way chapters are formatted. No more subchapters.
Chapter 5 in remake and 2-2 in the original are both 5 missions into the game.
This remake most definitely gets a 10/10 from me
What I love about the remake is that it has stealth mode. Crouch behind them and stab them. Niceeee!!
It has instant kill as well when the enemy is downed! Saving ammo has become easier lol
I hope they have an option on the stop and aim shooting with the laser. Always loved that.
The laser now will be an item you buy with the Merchant
I think the game looks gorgeus, but I think the rain's drop particles could be a little more transparent. They look too whitish from some angles, resembling milk.
@Hueco Mundo luckily enough people seem to be speaking about it, I feel somewhat confident it’ll be addressed in a patch

I can't put into words how much I'm looking forward to this game. This year is really bad, I have far too little time for everything I want to play.

I always wanted the original to have stealth elements. I even thought you could in the village when I first played it. It's like re4 from a parallel universe

This REM4KE looks amazing. The knife has a health bar as it did in the RE2MAKE. I’m glad the same team is making this game. Maybe the team who did the REMAK3 will do the CODE VEREMAKE.
One major issue I have is the rain. It is WAY too bright. Rain does not look like that, regardless of time of day. I hope this is just beta footage and they’re working on cleaning that up.

But one good thing that it is in chapter 5 which only last about 20mins and only has bad rain in some parts of chapter 5 I'm fine with that. By the time you get to salazars Castle the rain has stopped. So the game will still be amazing either way. Fixing the rain will be a bonus

When I read chapter 5, I ended up thinking that somehow they had released footage of the island already. This was pretty good too
I played and beat the original like 100 times, I can only imagine how many times I'll beat it when it comes back out updated. Imagine how mercenaries mode will be omfg new characters maybe?

I feel like the rain is definitely too bright, and you should really only see it when it passes by a light source
I’ll admit that I wasn’t a huge fan of the RE2 remake (probably because I’ve never been a huge fan of the early RE games in general). But I played RE4 a few years back and it was awesome despite its age. This game excites me because it looks like a great remake of the classic as well as a continuation of the remakes.
Paul Mercier is the voice of leon and the merchant in classic re4, i wish he had voiced the merchant in re4 remake

Being the big stealth fan that I am, I can’t believe they added sneak kills! That’s really going to give the game a breath of fresh air and make it feel like it’s not just a strictly copy and paste job with updated visuals and controls. I also love that you can now see the weapons Leon is carrying on his person much like RE2 Remake. Damn this can’t come out fast enough. 😩
As someone who loves TLOU 1 and 2, I’m so excited for the stealth in this game

One complaint is their torches remain well lit and the flames don't sway in the wind, despite it being very rainy and windy outside.
Capcom definitely learned a lot from Re2 and Re3 remakes. Re4 is looking really good.

I'm probably gonna die on this hill, but I feel like the "ballistics" exchange is the one line that actually should've stayed in the game. Even though it's Luis sexually harassing Ashley, it's also the one time Ashley stands up for herself and has character beyond token damsel in distress. I would think it would be more important to highlight that than just changing how the entire scene plays out, which is what they've done.

At the beginning it is somewhat difficult to recognize which area it is in, but later you see it so clearly and you realize that despite the years you continue to recognize each part of the map even though it is changing at such a level :,)

I wrote out that *I* like how it looks in this gameplay footage of RE4r, I don't care about GTA3 or what rockstar did to that game's rain effect, lol.
@SomeRandomJackAss Yup, there's also a line between realism and a visible portrayal of the effect. Still, not as bad as GTA's milk rain, this looks way better than that.
@K-Ent It's a tough line to ride from an artistic standpoint. You want to emphasize that it's raining heavily, but rain is transparent. They do have the drops bouncing off the characters, producing that halo effect that could imply it without having to show it, but I actually think the rain in later parts of this video looks better.

@K-Ent The game is about to go gold. I really doubt that the final product will have it fixed. You can only expect smart fans using mod to lessen the effect like they did with GTA3.
First few seconds of the video and I’m already stoked seeing how well they’ve aged up the RE2 Remake mode for Leon. It’s not even ageing up, it’s just subtle weariness added from living trough the events of RE2.
It’s such a fantastic change. His face has hardened significantly. He’s no longer innocent or naive like he was in the RE2 remake.
Anyone ever repeatedly shoot Luis in the part in the original version? He gets pissed off and shoots you to death. I wonder if they took that out
