But with Russian troops retreating just over the Dniepro river, joy has quickly turned to nightmare, with the city suffering daily bombardment by mortars, missiles and even tank shells. Simply surviving each day has become a matter of luck and many civilians have fled.
The Guardian's Luke Harding and Christopher Cherry speak to remaining residents to find out what life is like among the awful booms of artillery fire, and why they have chosen to stay.

Vasili is a true man. He did not persecute his friend on the phone. He asked what he wanted, mainly to be coy of course, but then wished his friend well regardless of the situation and his lack of response.
    Nice report.

The horrible selfishness of Sura, the Russian "friend", who complains about his Ukrainian friend who is under constant shelling by Russians forgetting his birthday is really nauseating. He clearly does not deserve Vasilij as a friend. Such a kind-hearted man ❤

Unfortunately that breakdown between Vitaly and Shura strikes me as all too common. It has amazed and appalled me over my life how people I considered close and trustworthy have proved the exact opposite when something happened that challenged their interests.
“it is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.” - Upton Sinclair.

You say that like it's so simple! But what are you advocating? Just, us, the forces of freedom n democracy, stop ponderously deliberating, and get out there with the guns and defeat the bad people so the others can live happily ever after!?
I don't disagree about the overarching vision. But you are urging a material action.
Yet I'd suggest that carrying that from merely voicing the theme, onto fruition, it's a gap requiring more than just stating an idealised goal and then saying go...

    • Vladislav Shulga

What the Red Cross Supervisor said was brilliant....."...of course they know they are shelling hospitals and schools, they lived here for a number of months!" (not a direct quote but close enough). So either the Russian shelling is extremely bad, or they are committing war crimes....obviously the latter...

This video is just like scenes of the London blitz, except in the blitz films it was indiscriminate bombing but here all the houses are well spaced out and each house seams to have its fare share of the available shelling. It’s definitely targeted I can’t see any lines of craters of sticks of bombs from aircraft. This is almost proof of gentrification or more likely attempted genocide of Ukrainians from their own country.

    • S-jr Grаviтоshка
      S-jr Grаviтоshка 5 months ago +1

Russia does not bomb civilians. There are attacks on strategic objects. Sometimes the Ukrainian air defense deflects the trajectory of the projectiles and then they fall into buildings. There are also cases when shells are deflected for another reason. If the Ukrainian government cared about people, it would have carried out the evacuation of civilians from the combat zone, as Russia did in Kherson.

  • Douglas Gray

If the Russians are just across the river and shelling Kherson daily, why have 1 or 2 HIMARS not been brought in to eliminate the threat? That’s easily within HIMARS range.

And I’ll share with you guys - going off script - I’ll share with you guys: So, the President and I were there at the White House for the day of the - of the - that he announced his nomination, and many of you may have watched it on television. And so we were in the back before we went out. And before we walked out, I just looked at our President and I said, “You’re again making history. You’re again making history.” Think about that.
You know, when we - when we look at the job we have in the coming months, and people will look at all of us as leaders and they’ll say, “Well, why should I vote? Why does it matter?” There’s so much we have to talk about. We have collectively, on many levels, achieved historic feats. And let’s be proud of that - knowing, of course, that there is still more to do. Let’s be proud of that. Be proud of that. (Applause.)
