But with Russian troops retreating just over the Dniepro river, joy has quickly turned to nightmare, with the city suffering daily bombardment by mortars, missiles and even tank shells. Simply surviving each day has become a matter of luck and many civilians have fled.
The Guardian's Luke Harding and Christopher Cherry speak to remaining residents to find out what life is like among the awful booms of artillery fire, and why they have chosen to stay.

Vasili is a true man. He did not persecute his friend on the phone. He asked what he wanted, mainly to be coy of course, but then wished his friend well regardless of the situation and his lack of response.
Nice report.
So you think that call was a nice birthday present? As if Shura could know where Ukrainian soldiers are hiding in Kherson area...
I could never do that. It would become lifelong hatred.
It's a lie
Surreal call. Why should that Russian's birthday be joyous when his country is wrecking misery upon their neighbors and former friends?
Your city is not dying. It's just winter and we have no idea when spring will come. We pray for your safe passage. Slava 🇺🇦 🇺🇦
Spring comes when Russian troops return
Wont return, most will die in ukraine.
@Не всем Свой orc you're getting wrecked
I want to express my condolences to all those who died in this war.
Take care of your loved ones. ❤️
The horrible selfishness of Sura, the Russian "friend", who complains about his Ukrainian friend who is under constant shelling by Russians forgetting his birthday is really nauseating. He clearly does not deserve Vasilij as a friend. Such a kind-hearted man ❤
"War is war. But it should be on the battlefield." No truer words have ever been spoken.
❤
We are NOT going away 💙💛
Unfortunately that breakdown between Vitaly and Shura strikes me as all too common. It has amazed and appalled me over my life how people I considered close and trustworthy have proved the exact opposite when something happened that challenged their interests.
“it is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.” - Upton Sinclair.
This is my all time favourite quote for a reason. It is bitterly disappointing but if you understand this fact the world makes an awful lot more sense.
It's been a long time since I've read Sinclair. That quote is quite appropriate.
I've learned of this when I was in the 3rd grade. Money controls the world.
Luke Harding had a conection with Julian Assange as you knowe. Look howe that played out.
0:25 No matter what happens in the war he has a heart of a child and strength of a lion 🦁 ❤️❤️❤️
Not at all
Yes he does 💙💛
Tragic and we need to support the courageous people of Ukraine.
Stay strong Ukraine in your fight for your freedom 🇺🇦🇵🇹💪🏼🇪🇺🇪🇺🇪🇺🇪🇺🇪🇺💛💙🇺🇲🇬🇧
Top notch journalism at its finest. Luke Harding is an absolute legend!
What a cool dude. Stuff blown to bits and he's concerned about others and hospitality. 12:12
Love & Grace to Kherson May Everyone Be Safe.
Rip to everyone who died in the war…
Excellent reporting. Wish there was a way for Russians to see this. There must be some people there with empathy.
They are told that it is Ukrainian artillery that is bombing Kherson.
They don't care. Realize this already
Hoping your city is safe and peaceful again soon.
😢 So sorry for the innocent citizens and children of Ukraine. Russia must stop this mindless war at once.
The problem is that Russia does not want to end the war on Ukraine's terms, so there will most likely be a lot of innocent bloodshed on both sides.
@I’m died of cringe. Agree. Putin is a completely crazy, unrepentent madman (pardon my strong language).
@Vishaal Bhatnagar Putin is not crazy, he is a bad person who acts purely in his own interests, just like many other politicians in the world.
That's all I'll write.
All the best.
@Ridethebomb777 you dont negociate with a guy that took your lands and ask for more. Ukraine never saw prosperity with Russia. and when Ukraine decided to try with Europe they got invaded. This is an illegal war of agression
@Hermógenes Lúcio Borali So, what you are saying is that you condone Ukraine shelling its own people in the Donbas .... and that Russia should never have come to their aid .... is that right ??
Excellent presentation, excellent reporting, thanks. 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦Salford uk
RIP Little child.
Courageous Khersonians!✌️
So pleased to see the you reporting factual news, keep it up
My great selut for Ukraine heroes
Bravo ukraine ❤❤❤❤
How about we stop speculating and just ensure the freedom and the continuance of democracy in the world.
Dear Kherson: ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🇺🇦💪
You say that like it's so simple! But what are you advocating? Just, us, the forces of freedom n democracy, stop ponderously deliberating, and get out there with the guns and defeat the bad people so the others can live happily ever after!?
I don't disagree about the overarching vision. But you are urging a material action.
Yet I'd suggest that carrying that from merely voicing the theme, onto fruition, it's a gap requiring more than just stating an idealised goal and then saying go...
The mongols taught imperial russians well in whatever concerns cruelty, mischief and cowardice…
The mongols? You mean modern history? The same is done by violent governments across the world. Mongolia has been relatively peaceful for centuries, compared to Russia, the US, Germany, Israel, Britain
The russians must be held responsible.
thank you from Kharkiv for the report
My heart goes out to all Ukrainians fighting for their freedom from Russian imperialism, Putin and his USSR fantasies.
I'm a foreigner and my home Kherson been living there for 6 years now I'm in Poland
You're absolutely the best journalist on earth. Tanks for all your reports and the new book.❤❤❤
Can’t wait for this war to end. So many lives taken 😢
even syrian civil war that felt like happened just yesterday already celebrated its 12th anniversary last month
Ask Putin to leave his forces from Ukraine then.
@kupis1408Are you even comparing a civil war with a brutal invasion?
say thanks to british snobs and american hawks
What the Red Cross Supervisor said was brilliant....."...of course they know they are shelling hospitals and schools, they lived here for a number of months!" (not a direct quote but close enough). So either the Russian shelling is extremely bad, or they are committing war crimes....obviously the latter...
Peace n Love.
Or, as has been shown many times on Telegram, the Ukrainian forces are garrisoning in such buildings.
Glory to Ukraine
My heart is with Ukraine and the Russian opposition.
Thanks for the Closed Captioning, only in Russian, 'The Guardian' and 'Clip-Share' ('Google') Top notch work... >_
Everything was going so well, and then 200000 heavily armed Russian hove into sight
❤ 🇺🇦 ❤
This video is just like scenes of the London blitz, except in the blitz films it was indiscriminate bombing but here all the houses are well spaced out and each house seams to have its fare share of the available shelling. It’s definitely targeted I can’t see any lines of craters of sticks of bombs from aircraft. This is almost proof of gentrification or more likely attempted genocide of Ukrainians from their own country.
Russia does not bomb civilians. There are attacks on strategic objects. Sometimes the Ukrainian air defense deflects the trajectory of the projectiles and then they fall into buildings. There are also cases when shells are deflected for another reason. If the Ukrainian government cared about people, it would have carried out the evacuation of civilians from the combat zone, as Russia did in Kherson.
If the Russians are just across the river and shelling Kherson daily, why have 1 or 2 HIMARS not been brought in to eliminate the threat? That’s easily within HIMARS range.
Because the missles are rare
a massive response.
The red cross does not leave the safety of the city center, ride around in expensive suvs, help is needed outside of the city but most importantly the red cross also helps out the Russian occupiers...
The Red Cross are supposed to be neutral in all wars. No matter what side a person is on, if someone needs medical attention, they are sworn to help.
💪🇺🇦❤️
The orcs took out all the furniture ... Well, they just rammed the truck, put the furniture there and took it away. XD
Vitaliy and Shura were friends before the war and hopefully remain friends.
Bro... his Russian 'friend' is just on another level. wow.
Actually, Russia made a strategic withdrawal (something Ukraine has no concept of) it wasn't "liberated."
exactly.
Zelenskyy didn't know a word of Ukrainian when he took power.
And I’ll share with you guys - going off script - I’ll share with you guys: So, the President and I were there at the White House for the day of the - of the - that he announced his nomination, and many of you may have watched it on television. And so we were in the back before we went out. And before we walked out, I just looked at our President and I said, “You’re again making history. You’re again making history.” Think about that.
You know, when we - when we look at the job we have in the coming months, and people will look at all of us as leaders and they’ll say, “Well, why should I vote? Why does it matter?” There’s so much we have to talk about. We have collectively, on many levels, achieved historic feats. And let’s be proud of that - knowing, of course, that there is still more to do. Let’s be proud of that. Be proud of that. (Applause.)
Pardon?
🤣😂🤣
🤦🏽♂️🤡🥴
Lolz
When surrounded in a city, declare it is of no importance - Sun Tzu
You can see some of Zelensky's Kvartal 95 translated on the Clip-Share channel Yasmin Ali Mentor💙🎹💛
They said Ukranian soldiers liberated Kherson, which was even celebrated, but the man tells on a phone there are no soldiers. Then how Kherson got liberated, by whom, did they liberate the city and left???
@Maria Russia If that's true why did you back off what reason do you want to say?😆
They mostly left because, after Russians bombed the bridges and crossings, Kherson became a dead end. Most forces were regrouped into the Eastern front, mostly around Bakhmut and Donetsk.
@Diogo Rodrigues ah, ok then
My friend there is not a Ukrainian soldiers every meter. You question is a bit weird.
🙏🏼
I'll just write to let you know. The same attacks are taking place on Russian territory. This is war. She's always like that. And it would be better if this did not happen. But for this it is necessary to negotiate. I remember that Russian ambassadors raised the topic of security guarantees in Europe an infinite number of times throughout 2021.
Stay strong guys 💪
Kherson oblast will be free again. Bakhmut hangs on like a stonewall! Soon you will have tanks
🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇸🇺🇸
Warmongers!!!
@ Shared Over Tea Tell that to the guys from the Kremlin.
Why didn’t Russia evacuate these peoples when they withdrew from Kherson, or did they only evacuate pro-Russia people?
Zelensky to provide salaries for Chechin soldiers soon to join their team 🫰
