Guests: Clément Charpentreau, Giedrimas Jeglinskas, Matthew Tyrmand
In today's program we talked to the former Assistant Secretary-General for Executive Management of NATO Mr Giedrimas Jeglinskas about the war in Ukraine from the perspective of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and how the Atlantic order is dominant and crucial to Ukraine's victory. We also spoke with military aviation, defense and aviation security specialist Clément Charpentreau about the air operations over Ukraine and how shooting down 60-70 Russian ballistic missiles proves that Ukraine has developed significant air defense capabilities. We also spoke about the attack on the Russian Engels airbase...

I really do appreciate the in depth analysis of what may be going on behind the scenes over there.
Over here in America, we are hard pressed to get anything more than a simplistic 30 second sound bite about what the possible reasoning and strategies of all the major players are in this conflict. And while I realize that TVP has a somewhat partisan view of the situation, it's still the best source for a pretty fair assessment of what is going on.
Thank you for your work on this.

This Lithuanian NATO /Former defense Minister understanfs this topic intimately . When you go to Independence rallies (when countries were freed from Soviet Union ) like Lithuania's 2018 Centennial , you see so many Ukranian flags supporting freedom . It's the world's turn to understand that this is a repeat of history and support Ukraine .

This is a very insightful analysis by the TVP World guest. The French journalist is correct. Even though the strikes inside Russian territory are not declared publicly, the only way to stop the shelling of power facilities in Ukraine is to disable the sources wherever they are.

Thank you for providing an Eastern European perspective in English! We need more voices like this to counter the ridiculous notion that Russia will behave itself without brute force being applied. The Russian governments throughout history have NEVER demonstrated a willingness to be reasonable or peaceful. The only language they understand is blunt aggression. From Ottawa, Canada!

    • Andrey Ef.
      Andrey Ef. 2 months ago

    • Andrey Ef.
      Andrey Ef. 3 months ago

@Laramie Roush ,

    • Laramie Roush
Laramie Roush 3 months ago +1

@Andrey Ef. "So who is threatening whom?" That would be the one who moved first into the borders of a neighboring nation. That would be the one who speaks of a pre-emptive nuclear strike. That would be the one who speaks to Kazakhstan in the same manner it spoke to Ukraine before a full-scale invasion. That would be what's left of Putin's Russia. A loud-mouth who knows better than to launch nukes, but continues to threaten the world with a neglected arsenal of cold war relics.

Before this conflict broke out Ukraine had a respectable arms industry that exported things like tanks and jets. It was also one of the countries along with Russia that serviced soviet era machines of war.

@Gary Moore totally agree it was luftwaffe who couldn't sustain the losses. Chamberlain had hurricanes and spitfires being produced years before Battle of Britain. Whilst they could land in fields they still needed the logistics (rearming, repair, refuelling, etc) so attacks on airfields wasn't only runways. More than that the pilots needed as much rest as possible near the planes. It was pilots more than anything that benefitted most from switch to bombing of cities.

Gary Moore 3 months ago +1

Shaughan....The RAF airfields and pilots issue always strikes me as a bit of a misnomer. The Spitfire and Hurricane were both capable of taking off from grass runways and often did so. There were literally hundreds of civilian airfields in the South East of England during the second world war. I am not aware of any British Fighters being lost due to airfields being knocked out of action......if you can land on an alternate airfield you can take off from it too. Also most airfields that were bomb damaged were repaired and back in action the following day. 11 Group took the brunt of the Luftwaffe attack and during the BoB and were on their uppers.....12 Group and the others were not under anywhere near the same pressure.....the soloution was simply to rotate experienced fighter pilots into 11 Group which was eventually done. Britain could always train replacement pilots faster than the Luftwaffe could shoot them down....lack of combat experience was the real problem. The Luftwaffe was also losing pilots at a rate of 2 or 3 times the rate of British losses. It was Germany that was unable to sustain their aircraft losses....not Great Britain 🙂🇬🇧

if this attack in airbase inside Russia has done by Ukraine then this is a great achievement by Ukraine own technology, by this way US and NATO can not dictate or limit the counter offensive by Ukraine inside Russia. Slava Ukraine show Russia that you have the tenacity and have the ability to create something big to defend and go for strong offensive

First radar guided bomb attacks against shipping were towards the end of WW II by the US vs Japanese ships. The Germans had radio guided bombs in 1943 also used against ships. All required line of sight to the target from the planes dropping them.

In addition to declaring myself satisfied with the attacks carried out on Russian military installations by the Ukrainians, I must also express some perplexity about the means that would have been used for this purpose, something for which I do not deny the possibility that at least one of the attacks was substantially a sabotage carried out by people and not by flying drones. Basically, the use of an old electronic surveillance drone like the Tu-141 is conceptually plausible as a method but evidently not very effective as an operational result - If the problem is the Russians' ballistic weapons and air-dropable cruise missiles, why strike a couple of planes when the missile depots were much more vulnerable? -.
In the specific of the "Drone", meanwhile the original construction characteristics and the specific typology of the aircraft envisaged a use not at all suitable for flying over enemy territory. Wanting to consider it as a generic surveillance and attack drone and not specifically a kamikaze drone, the aircraft would make sense if it were possible to "pilot" it remotely like a Bayraktar II, otherwise it is also silly to call it a "Drone", therefore reusable in several occasions, which would also imply the presence of a reliable two-way radio link even at the maximum reachable operating distance - at this point it is also implied that the aircraft is equipped with an INS/GPS navigation system and has an effective satellite link, something which very few nations can have in the military field -. If, on the other hand, the Ukrainians used this Tu-141 as a sort of cruise missile, then we are simply in the presence of a (strong) demonstrative action made on purpose to make the aggressors' morale even more fragile and "test" the Russian AA capabilities on their same territory.
In the end, I assume that Ukraine is more than capable of designing and building a "combat drone", perhaps even updating and modifying the basic design of the venerable Tu-141, without necessarily dusting it off and using it starting from a museum aeronautical 🤔

Historically, distance, altitude, and expected performance have been of secondary importance when considering war in USSR/Russia. Note that tactical air ops are conducted thousands of feet lower in that part of the world compared to the Middle East, Africa, or Europe. There is enough old-but-functional equipment in Eastern Europe and Ukraine has enough precision workshops and brilliant minds that they can kluge all kinds of surprising things together. If the US took stuff out of HIMARS to shorten the range, who is going to tell Ukraine that they can't replace US gizmos with home-grown stuff sourced from a hundred high-tech companies around the world? Don't underestimate them. хай живе Україна! (Stay healthy Rock! Get out of the cold. We need you.)

Forty minute broadcast and its cold and either snowed or rained some. What are we trying to do? Are the stations trying to see how many news anchors and reporters get hit by a car, get hypothermia, or pneumonia? This is ridiculous! I don’t need any humans standing in anymore tornadoes, hurricanes, and cold snaps to understand what weather is. Treat the reporters with respect, and like human beings! 😮
