I love how there's even detail when they're getting thrown out of the tavern. Percy, Keyleth, Vax and Vex all get thrown same distance because they're relatively the same size. Pike goes flying because she's the smallest, while Grog just kinda bounces down the steps because he's so big. And Scanlan was naked so the tavern keeper probably just didn't wanna touch him, which is fair.

this is exactly what we were looking for. a legit animation not a bunch of little shorts. if we get a mighty nein season after this and so on would be so awesome
Amazon already greenlit the second season, so I think they're planning on starting the Chroma Conclave arc. My guess would be that the CC arc takes at least two seasons as there's a lot of plot to cover (finding the Vestiges and then fighting all the dragons! The Raven Queen subplot! Raishan! Ripley! So much shipping, etc!). After that, the final arc of the campaign would take neatly fit into one 12 episode season.
So:
The Briarwoods = Season 1 (Coming soon!)
The Chroma Conclave & the Vestiges = Seasons 2 & 3 (S2 greenlit, S3 unsure, decision pending)
The Final Arc of C1 = Season 4 (unsure, decision pending)
So, in ideal world, if we get all the seasons we want, M9's turn wouldn't come until Season 5, so it's going to be a while.
The problem with M9 and Campaign 2, though, is that it doesn't really tie into Campaign 1. As much as I love M9, completely new protagonists in a new setting might not go over well with traditional TV audiences.... whereas C3 has ties to C1, making it an easier sell than C2.
IDK, it's way too early to speculate, but if the show is a hit and we get all of C1 animated, I have a gut feeling that they could skip over M9 entirely, and jump straight to C3.

I never saw Campaign 1, but I couldn't be more excited for this! The extended cast are all absolute legends, the main cast sound great as always, the animation looks fantastic, and I can already tell that the emotional beats from the source material are going to hit so hard and be so painful. This is truly a passion project if I ever saw one.
But the show is pre-campaign one, isn't it?
Campaign 1 starts out with an extended stay in the Underdark, with dark dwarves and mindflayers and even an iconic boss monster which I won't spoil. Episode 4 features some metal gear level sneaking and it's so tense.
I do suggest skipping to around episode 25 if you just want to tune in to the Briarwood arc which is what the animated season will mostly be about. But! If you want to tune in to the start, you're in for some good times.
C1 IMO still has the highest highs and lowest lows of anything they have done. It's an amazing experience if a flawed one.
@Techdraconis I did this in 2019/2020. Here's what I would recommend:
Start by catching up on C3. Some characters for EXU are in the campaign, so you have something to go off of. There are references back to C1 (and one or two to C2) you won't get, but they're subtle.
Then, you have some options.
Normally, I'd recommend starting with C2, since C2 has a much higher production quality and is just easier to watch as a result. IMO, C1 took a couple years (somewhere between 30-50 episodes) for them to really get comfortable being in front of a camera. C1 also starts rather abruptly - you *really* have to watch the first few episodes to figure out what's going on, who characters are, etc., because it was like... "we're in the middle of an ongoing home game, and now there's cameras." No character introductions or anything. Just straight in. And there was an ex-member that caused a lot of issues and strife in the first 25 or so episodes.
HOWEVER, all that said, since C3 has references back to C1, and the new show is out, and the Kith & Kin book (that's a bit of Vax and Vex's backstory), it's really your call.
If you do decide to dive into C1, there's guides on /r/criticalrole (Reddit) that can help you find your way if you're confused, or you want to skip over some episodes but still know the basic story.
Once you complete C1, I'd highly recommend watching the Adventures of the Darrington Brigade one shot, the Search for Grog one shot, and the Search for Bob one shot. Darrington Brigade is one of my favorite things CR has ever done. But none of them fully make sense until you've seen all of C1.

@Nigel Calpe sadly, that means that certain moments simply won't carry the same weight. When VM showed up in draconia, one of the big gut punches was seeing our friend frozen dead having lost a fight against that dragon. It made what would have been a checkbox fight into a personal one.
Not sure how the team will get it to land the same way without that personal connection.

@Dungeon master Orion has the rights to Tiberius and unfortunately Clarota probably won't show up because they're doing the Briarwood arc first.
@Dungeon master Tiberius won't be in the series as they don't have the permission to use him (Orion has the rights on him and Draconia, it's the same reason as to why Matt had to destroy all traces of it in the original campaign) and the Kraghammer arc will be either not used or reworked completely.

I DONT KNOW WHY. Watching all of these characters makes me so happy, but when Pike is on screen and Ashley's sincerity is flowing through her I just start welling up. WHY? I don't know. I think Pike is my favourite critical role character... Like overall and completely. At least until C3 gets rolling more. Chetney is inching up.
@Andre Canis I was kind of hoping she was going to pull a Gandalf like she did in the campaign.
And in the series Pike will be there all the time! No Blindspot breaks!
The reveal in the last episode caught me by surprise
still feels kinda weird to go from improvised, hundreds of hours of D&D stream to a lot shorter and polished animated series, but I AM looking forward to watching it.

Ok so I am slowly getting into this... The voice acting is kind of great and the animation isn't too shabby...
Also, 7/8 of them have voiced a Fire Emblem character at least once (only Ashley hasn’t voiced one, and I kinda doubt she ever will).

@Cyborg Raptor i can be claiming any of it b/c I saw the source material and the second campaign, the mini campaign, what has come out thus far in the third campaign, read the guides, etc. I will give you that there is a video game feel (which I think is actually the tabletop RPG coming through.) Do give it time. If you really want truly upended fantasy tropes I would recommend the second campaign over the first, but that is hundreds of hours of actual play content and definitely isn't for everyone.
"A Song of Ice and Fire" the over-written, self-important, disturbingly sexist and racist, wanna be LotR series GoT is based on.
And again, art is subjective and not everything is for everyone. As a fantasy nerd I will say I personally found CR to be unique in high fantasy that I really enjoyed.

@Cyborg Raptor and obviously to each their own. Art will always be subjective. IMHO Game of Thrones/ASOIAF is absolute garbage and CR is at its best in how it differs from that whole subgenre while still having a similar setting. It is much more fun, much more caring, much less pretencious. Again, to each their own 🤷♀️

As someone who has recently got into DnD(even though I've never played a day in my life), and just started watching Critical Role, it is such an enormous joy to see these characters being brought to life. I haven't watched this yet, but I know I'm going to enjoy the hell out of it when I do, I especially can't wait to see Grog, he and Travis as well are my absolute favorites whenever I watch CR.

First shot of the Barkeep I thought it was a dwarf, because the voice is obviously female, but she has a beard, next shot shes way too big, and then transforms and even though we dont see her, her voice changes into something really beast like showing that shes most likely a monster-race in disguise, which explains the beard pretty well. Nice scene^^
might be a shifter considering their ability to get animal traits

The tavern keeper is a community-created character (I think part of a kickstarter stretch goal): a chaotic good, middle-aged, nonbinary changeling. The VA, Mason Alexander Park, is also nonbinary. They play Desire in Sandman, among other roles. :)

If you feel like that, I can GUARANTEE that you won't like The Legend of Vox Machina, as AT LEAST three out of the seven main characters are not straight (two bisexuals, one asexual), and one of the most beloved minor characters of the entire VM story arc is very, VERY gay. Also, the tavern keeper is DEFINITELY not the only nonbinary character on the show.

With all the scenes of this and VOD stuff from the trailer, and the fact that all we've seen of Pike Trickfoot is her scarred face and white hair, does this mean we won't get to see the Pre Stream stuff animated? (note, she originally had brown hair according to both the wiki and the Vox Machina Origins comic.)
@Damien SOh I meant to put the focus on the change being to the plot of saving Uriel, if they were actually covering that and Pikes revival they /would/ have had her original hair and then show it change. From the reviews it sounds like its not related to the actual prestream events at all.
