@Dillsfawn I never had any issue reading dialogue in shows, when I was a little kid and subtitled would come on for different languages in cartoons I watched I honestly kind of enjoyed it lol. For me it’s more about the performance, and the original language is almost always the way to go on that front

@Michael Dean DBZ is the one show I'm irrational about. Growing up Goku was my definition of manly- you will not catch me listening to Goku sounding like a young girl man. For most other things- even Bebop where the dub arguably captures the mood of the show better- I still think the original usually gives you a more complete experience. Still, I've got no hate in my heart for dubs. If people like them then I say more power to them, I'm just glad to have more people enjoying a medium that I love.

Some general knowledge on this show. It’s based off of Critical Role, a live streamed D&D game played by well known voice actors, including Matthew Mercer, Laura Bailey, and Liam O’Brian. This animated series originally started on kickstarter as just an animated special, but they ended up getting so much money they were able to turn it into a series before getting picked up my Amazon. Apparently, season 2 has already been green lit. This series is based off the first campaign of Critical Role, which follows Vox Machina as they go from a band of chuckle-fucks, to renowned heroes of the land.

@DragonSlayerGU They started the stream already invested into their first campaign which was originally a home game. The first two episodes come from stuff that happened pre stream, and they skipped over that first arc to streamline the process. There’s also some contention relating to Orion Acaba, who was formerly a player in their group, but left on bad terms after internal some conflict. So that’s another reason.

So fun fact: The voice actors for the little kids in the village are actually voiced by the children of Liam Obrian (Vax's VA) and Sam Riegal (Scanlan's VA). Also the half-elf person that Scanlan pees on near the Job board is Matthew Mercer 's insert character (there are multiple characters that Matt plays so keep an eye on that)

  • aquatus1
    aquatus1 8 months ago +274

The thing of it is that, since this is based on an actual D&D campaign, the story doesn't proceed quite how one expects. You can pick out the times a player rolls a critical miss or hit and how it changes the story. Vox Machina (the clever wordplay referring to their careers as voice actors) is less a story or a legend, and more the crazy wacky lives of a bunch of C-rank adventurers suddenly thrown into S-class missions and rising up to the challenge.

    • Loogi Boy
Loogi Boy 8 months ago +4

@aquatus1 Percy is at this time, pretty much the only gunslinger. He actually more or less invented guns and gunpowder in this universe

    • aquatus1
      aquatus1 8 months ago

Hmm...perhaps they are B-rank individually, but haven't yet learned to work properly as a team. This is pretty early in their adventures, after all. Also, I'm not completely sure that applies to all of them. How is Percy ranked as a gunslinger? And Scanlan...not sure how bards work actually, but I feel he would be better than how he is if he were actually B rank already.

@Dylan Brown Its latin for 'voice machine' which correlates to the entire cast of the actual campaign being professional voice actors

  • Dillsfawn
    Dillsfawn 8 months ago +216

I was hoping you'd react to this. Literally every episode is better than the last.
Some bits of background info. (non-spoilery of course)
The show is based off of Critical Role. A group of professional voice actors who stream their Dungeons & Dragons games. The show was indeed a kickstarter. They asked for $750,000 to make a single 22 minute episode. Got $11.3 million, which allowed them to make a whole 10 episode season. Then Amazon Prime got on board and asked for an additional 2 episodes for season 1, and promised to fund a season 2.

    • Banana Cat
      Banana Cat 2 months ago

Reminds me of the Avatar TRPG which reached its goal in hours and was in the millions in days.
And that's for a show that hasn't had a new series in like a decade

    • Dillsfawn
      Dillsfawn 8 months ago +1

Like @Azure the Lucario said. Also most manga to anime transitions have most of the story already plotted out with little need for modification.
While the story of Vox Machina already exists, the transition from a 3-4 hour D&D stream to 22 minute episodes is not so straight forward. They need to condense or even remove like 70% of the stream's content, just because there is *SO* much of it. Conversely many manga to anime transitions can just straight up use most of the manga directly as the anime's story boards. which further reduces costs.
Basically, it's not that anime is cheap because animation is. Anime is cheap because a very large portion of the prep work is already done by the manga.

    • Azure the Lucario
Azure the Lucario 8 months ago +6

@TheGrim Well that's mostly because of the anime having a manga before it. Having designs and a story written out brings the cost down tremendously. All they have to do is decide how to animate scenes, choosing whether or not some parts will have purely 2d animation or if it'll have some 3d animation.

    • TheGrim
      TheGrim 8 months ago

@Llamarama It's more so western anime's or cartoons if you really wanna be petty that have high costs per episode like this, anime's like Demon Slayer only have around 80-100k episodes.

    • Llamarama
      Llamarama 8 months ago +7

@JankyYard Depends. From what I've heard, the average animated show is around $1 million per episode. A show like Arcane, on the other hand, was around $10 million per episode.

  • 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒔 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒔

*If the editor wants to tell them without spoilers: the first two episodes are based on a pre-stream event and used to introduce the characters, episode 3 is when the pacing slows down and they adapt an actual arc from the campaign (the amazing arc that’s considered to be when Critical Role truly founds its footing).*

@bandi138138 Its definitely meant to be magical, you have to expend a spell slot to use it unlike the show where its innate. I guess Vex will just conveniently not be around when we get situations like general Kreig again later on.

    • unlucky soul

@Lynx Fresh they don't show it a lot here, but Rangers also have limited magical abilities in 5th edition DnD, and Primeival Awareness is sort of one of the ability that one can interpret as magical or skill based. Considering you can sense their presence within 1 - 6 miles, I like to interpret it as magic in my games.

    • unlucky soul
unlucky soul 8 months ago +3

@Lynx Fresh yes, though in the show it's more of general area in which the creature or creatures is present, but in dnd and depending on the dungeon master it can be Ether further broaden

This show is based off a DND game, Keyleth freezing during the dragon fight is actually a game mechanic. Dragons have this ability called draconic presence, it's basically a fear effect that the players have to save against, or be scared of the dragon... Keyleth failed the roll against the draconic presence so she had to skip rounds of combat till she made the save (this isn't the exact mechanic but it's altered here so it could be translated better for animation)

"[Grog is] Little Roshi, trying to explain his emotions." 😂 For reference, in D&D each stat maxes out at 20, and anything under 10 gives you a negative modifier instead of a buff. One of Grog's most famous quotes is, "I have an intelligence of 6, I think I know what I'm doing." 😁 So, you know.... Little Roshi?

This won't really mean much to you as I doubt you're familiar with D&D but it should give you an idea on what their foundation is like who has magic and who doesn't.

So, fun fact. Before the streamed D&D, Vox Machina called themselves "The Shits", but when they had to be formally introduced before nobles, they decided to revise their name to Vox Machina.

A little expansion for both names for anyone wondering. It was "The SHITs", or the Super High-Intensity Team originally. Once the livestream started it changed to Vox Machina, Latin for "Voice Machine" as the entire party was made up of voice actors.

Vox Machina means "Voice in the Machine" since the entire cast who played the original D&D game are all voice actors.

I was curious about the line "the name is a somewhat clever play on words", so I had to find out.
Vox Machina is Latin for Voice Machine...

The "clever play on words" Percy was mentioning about the name Vox Machina is because it is Latin for "Voice Machine". This is based off a D&D campaign played by a bunch of professional voice actors and when they started livestreaming their game they had to change their name from the original one they had when it was their private home game. Originally they were the SHITs, or the Super High-Intensity Team. In universe they changed the name once they started meeting nobility, out of universe they changed it because they were starting to stream the game on Twitch instead of playing privately at home and wanted a little more dignity in their team name.

The characters of Vox Machina are actually voiced by the players/voice actors/cosplayers who invented them for their D&D game. And they are pretty known voice actors.

If Scanlan only used the word “bitch” four more times a line, he’d rap as well as Roshi
