  • Undefeated two-time super middleweight world champion David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez retained his Interim WBC Super Middleweight Title with a bruising unanimous decision victory over former world champion Caleb Plant in the SHOWTIME PPV main event Saturday night from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions. The judges’ final tallies were 117-111, 116-112 and 115-113.
The highly anticipated showdown between super middleweight rivals turned into the intriguing clash of styles that many predicted it would be, as Plant’s boxing acumen carried the early action until the brute force and high-volume power punching of Benavidez took over. After 12 grueling rounds in front of a sold out arena, the two fighters squashed their years long beef, embracing and expressing their mutual respect.
“I know there was a lot said between us but in the end we settled this like men,” said Benavidez. “I’m happy we gave the fans the best rivalry of the year or the last five years. I’m just very happy.”
“It’s a big rivalry but that’s what boxing is all about,” said Plant. “We came here and settled it like men. I take nothing from David. We haven’t been the best of friends but we got into the ring and we settled it like men. That’s what you’re supposed to do. He’s a helluva fighter.”
According to CompuBox, Benavidez (27-0, 23 KOs) held a large advantage in power punches landed (180-68) but also out-landed Plant in jabs (30-23). Plant (22-2, 13 KOs) was the busier fighter, throwing 624 to Benavidez’s 551, but was unable to deter the late round onslaught from Benavidez.
“I knew I had to take it step by step and round by round,” said Benavidez. “Caleb is a tough fighter. He’s not going to give you everything in the first few rounds so you have to find him. But I feel like I didn’t just show that I was a power puncher tonight. I showed that I had defense and head movement and I was able to move around the ring and cut the ring off really good.”
Plant’s movement appeared to give Benavidez trouble throughout the early action, as Plant consistently landed two to three punch combinations and escape Benavidez’s counters. It wasn’t until round eight that Plant’s movement began to slow down and his attempts at holding were increasingly thwarted.
“I was trying to hold him when necessary, punch him when necessary, and throw my combinations when necessary,” said Plant. “But when the best get in there with the best, you roll the dice and someone is going to come out with their hand raised and someone will come up short. And one thing that I pride myself on is that I roll with the best in the world. I haven’t ducked anyone and maybe we can have a rematch in the future.”
As the fight moved into the championship rounds, Benavidez pushed forward more aggressively, busting Plant’s nose and peppering him with short hooks from all angles. Plant stayed on his feet for the final bell, but his final attempts to turn the tide were thwarted by Benavidez. Asked post fight about his future plans, Benavidez set his sights squarely on undisputed 168-pound champion Canelo Alvarez.
“I just want to tell everyone that I have a lot of respect for Canelo Alvarez but he has to give me that shot now,” said Benavidez. “That’s what everyone wants to see. Let’s make it happen.
Now the fans are calling for this fight, the legends are calling for this fight, so let’s make it happen.”

And hugged every chance he got .. He's lucky, Kenny Bayless was the referee.. Any other ref would have took points for the excessive holding which plant did the whole fight and saved him from getting stopped!!..

@MiÑONGA the point is putting on a show, and the fact that David was able to leak plant puts him in a right to put on a show wit canelo

CALEB PLANT fought a titanic fight, but BENAVIDEZ hit hard, his body weight was on his side, plus he did not get tired. All things considered, I believe the headbutt and subsequent cut inhibited PLANT's execution. It was an exciting fight, though! After the way Benavidez fought, Canelo Alvarez might want to fight him because he appeared vulnerable against a very beatable Plant. You can argue that Canelo was more dominating in his 11th-round knockout victory over Plant than Benavidez was in beating him by a 12-round decision.

Caleb has all the skills and heart but requires so much energy for 12 rounds, David reserves all his energy because his punches are just effortless with so much power. Caleb has nothing to be ashamed of, he let it all hang out in the 12th, what a fight.

Still a Plant fan regardless of the decision he fought a good fight and his technique and sharp punching is why I really admire him such a talent

I have much respect for Plant. He had very good moments and I think he could have capitalized a bit more if he kept distance, instead of taking the shots, I know he is tough but the jab and fast straights are more effective.

Plant is the fookin man. Much respect. Fans don’t care if you lose, it’s how you lose and come back. Plants last three fights 💪🏼 he got a lot of heart and that’s all fans love to see. Love it.

Indeed, i think nowdays fighters dont want to lose and dont fight the best, thats why many fight that should dont happen but fights like this prove that a great fight is what people want and even if you lose against the best you still get respect

Plant is very skilled and has great head movement and footwork , but as i expected Benavidez broke him down by 6th or the 7th and he slowly started being flat footed and giving David way to much room to let his hands go 💯
Caleb did well making Benavidez fight his fight early on ,but he just couldn’t keep that pace and volume up hats off to both warriors I can’t wait to see what’s next for Benavidez hopefully it’s Alaverz 🔥✌️

I didn’t realize how little power he had or how well Benavidez could take a punch. Plant never once phased Benavidez. I thought Plant had a bit more power. I think that was the difference, if Plant had more power then Benavidez wouldn’t have been able to walk him down the last half of the fight.

    • Jayden Vu
      Jayden Vu Month ago

Plant got his fans aka Canelo fans hyped up. Real hype job. No power. Benavidez style is to get hit and apply pressure. He doesn’t stop coming forward. Casuals think the guy got a glass jaw w that Gavril knockdown. The guy proved himself tonight that he’s legit.

Caleb has a champions heart. Great fighter. I feel he just got tired. Had the steam knocked out of him with well placed body shots over the course of the fight. But he wasn’t going to beat DB. I didn’t see it. Still a great fight between two great fighters.

    Incredible fight nonetheless.

David looked amazing. He never looked gassed despite the pace that plant put on in the first 6 rounds. Full respect to Plant as well. He comfortably won the first 6 rounds and when Benavidez came on late, Plant took shots that would've put most fighters out.

Vedant Patel that's what I saw, Plant outboxing Benavidez the first 6 rounds, then gassing out the last 6, it was a very close fight, despite what people think, because Benavidez took over the second half of the fight, but lost the first 6 rounds. Yes Plant took Benavidez best shots very well, maybe Benavidez doesn't hit that hard, and Plant was landing as well on Benavidez, great fight.

    • hqb207
      hqb207 2 months ago +4

@LOTM2 there is no way Plant won all 6 rounds he won at most 4. It was indeed a competitive first half but DB already turned on his 2nd gear by 5th round and proceeded to beat up Plant badly till the end of the fight. You are all acting like Plant gassed by himself shit if he is not in such a great shape he would be out cold already by those bombs.

  • The Messenger

This was very similar to Pacquiao vs Clottey. Pacquiao was a destructive monster and he couldn’t get Joshua Clottey out of there or even drop him because Clottey held all night and clinched and only came to survive 🤷‍♂️ same thing here with Plant. You can’t get a guy out of there if he’s not willing to engage and fight.
