    --------------------------------------------------------------------
On today's episode of Car Trek, AutoTempest challenged us to find three of the world's cheapest, most depreciated supercars and meet up in Las Vegas for a series of challenges. Freddy chose a derelict Maserati Coupe GT "Trofeo Tribute" car, Ed brought an ex-cartel Aston Martin V12 Vanquish, and Tyler showed up in a Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG that was clearly NOT a supercar. But then we found out what was wrong with them...

And then he sells his glorified Z3 because it's too reliable.
And for those who don't know, a regular Z3 roadster or clownshoe is quite a bit cheaper to own than an M.

The Mercedes Red Pig did not "do terrible." It won its class and finished 2nd overall 24 Hours of Spa in 1971. And this was on the brutal 21 turn 8.76 mile Spa layout used from 1939-1978.

Amazing. When top gear lost its way and fired it's original hosts, it failed to find a replacement crew with a good internal dynamic... Now you guys killed it! Not quite OG Top Gear, but a hell of a lot better than new top gear. I love it! Will watch every episode you guys release!

    • MusicMaster5671
      MusicMaster5671 6 months ago +3

Grand Tour IS the replacement.... Though that has sadly slowed down with Clarkson's farm and Hammond and May having other new projects as well...

I'm sorry, but even though these guys aren't bad, it is nowhere near the level of Jeremy, James and Richard, no car show comes even close to that trio.

the spinoff top gear introduction to the cars did feel cheap though when compared to the possibility of these three doing something more creative.

  • Nutshot_Brawler

If this was TG or the Grand Tour, Hammond would be in that Maserati, he also probably would've done the same thing Tavarish did with the decals, Clarkson would be in the Merc, he prefers AMG Mercs and he'd probably do the same wrap thing with similar results and May would be in the Aston Martin, because it's essentially the most British out of the three cars and looks the best

    • Cleens
      Cleens 2 years ago +14

No way! Clarkson would be in the Aston, as it is the fastest looking of the bunch and captain slow would drive the Merc as it is dull and boring, but reliable and the best choice all other feelings aside.

    • Chief Denis
Chief Denis 2 years ago +4

@Cleens clarkson would be in the merc cuz "MOAR POWAAH!"

    • TylRRRRRRRRRR
      TylRRRRRRRRRR 2 years ago +4

@Chief Denis Hed be in the Aston Martin cause it’s an Aston Martin...have you NOT seen all the times he’s driven an Aston Martin in the Grand Tour and Top Gear combined?! Although the Mercedes is somewhat his type, it’s more dull and less showy as James May is.

    • Ross Watson
Ross Watson 2 years ago +4

And the jokes would be funny

    • geoffk777
      geoffk777 2 years ago +1

Clarkson is an insufferable British car snob, so he'd be in the Aston. It's British and that's all that matters. May would be in the Merc, as it's comfortable, and luxurious. And Hammond likes cheap and cheerful wrecks, so he might have the Maserati.
In fairness, May once had an old Rolls and Clarkson had a Grosser Mercedes 600, but that was a rare exception. Usually, if there's one British car, Clarkson will take it.

I just want to say that I really enjoyed this series and the one before it. All three of Freddy, Ed, and Hoovie are very entertaining, and I can't wait for CarTrek3! Someone should hire all three of you to do the US version of Top Gear. I think it would be a big hit! Incidentally, I liked Hoovie's car the best in this installment.

      ICan'tGiveCredit 2 years ago +8

They did not make very many 6-speed stick Coupés/Spyders - 1,078 of them, to be exact. This particular model, BTW, is supposed to be the Trofeo model... but, the interior seems to suggest otherwise. Not sure what that's about. If it really is a Trofeo car, though, it'd be of an even lower production - maybe around a few dozen(?)

I'm new to the car trek series and now im binge watching them and it seems like Freddy always gets the biggest beater and it always cracks me up his interior is missing a panel or 2, maybe a headliner, something is either not working on the cluster or just not even in the dashboard, he is by far the Richard Hammond of the series.

Nice vid, I enjoyed it very much. The Aston was the best of the three IMO my favorite and the only one I would consider. Luckily I could do the work myself so repair costs would go down a lot once you leave out labor costs. 29K IMO is a deal for Aston and it is the best looking car out of the three and probably the one that would attract the most attention. I would like to see a long term review of all three it's nice to see how long and how much these super cars cost in the long run. I figure these cars are gone after the video is over. I never buy used luxury/exotics always buy them used and so far I have had great luck with little to no big repairs. I hsve to admit this is the first vid from Tavarish I have seen and I subscribed did watch these at the track in the other vid after. It looked like fun.

These guys are the first ones that I've seen since Top Gear to actually have a good dynamic and be entertaining and not just annoying. The production is kind of similar, and it's nice to see a good "challenge" episode. It was just missing an intern wearing a lab coat and holding a cue card as a "producer" and it would've had the whole package!

Gettin' the good ol' Top Gear vibe from the time when Jezza, Hamster and Captain Slow were running the show.

I wasnt sure that there would be a trio that could match Clarkson, May and Hammond. You three have proved otherwise.
Keep it up! Can’t wait for more!

I worked at a Mercedes dealership around the year 2000. I was a few years out of high school at the time. I remember getting to drive a BRABUS S-class that had a sticker price of $165k. At the time, that would have bought a nice, new starter home in the area. The car was beautiful but it really helped me understand the excesses of wealth.

I think CarTrek and CarThrottle have the OG top gear feel. It's so refreshing to see this poor man's Top Gear!

The Aston would make a beautiful project... with that manual box, or a 6 speed ZF auto if it could be made to fit.

As a Brit with an Italian car, I'm not sure who to back. Actually, remembering how much time I've spent under my Italian car, yes I am. Aston all the way.

  • Erik Hefflefinger

Turns out the Car Wizard was actually wrong this time. The valve cover gaskets were not bad on the CL65. Is was a tiny little o-ring down in the valley of the V12, and to get to it, you have to pull the motor. With that knowledge, I don't think Tyler would have won this challenge so easily. I think the Wizard was playing favorites again lol. 😂

I watched your 1st series a while back, and I did like that. Just started this one right now, and I'm looking forward to enjoy the whole tour of this series. FYI I'm a long time huge fan of Top Gear and Grand tourer shows, but to me that doesn't make me feel any difference to this show, if anything it's all your presentation and all the other works for the making of this show matters. Forgetting the findings of everything's unique side, compare one with another is stupid people's job. So don't bother, carry on and be the best of yourself.

The grooves on the Aston’s rotors increase surface area. That’s a brake enhancement.

This is Awesome! Keep them coming! You guys are taking over the niche Grand Tour audience! I still don’t get how an amazon show could not produce a single episode, while a few guys from Clip-Share have been able to film two specials!
Thank you guys for keeping us entertained!
When is the Car Trek merch coming? Need some Christmas gifts.

Seriously. At this stage, Clip-Share content is starting to kill large production houses with amazing material and at a fraction of the cost.

My dream car has been appreciating in value for over 20 years... Also, my old Mercedes, when I had it, was a fantastically reliable car. It was also, however, nowhere near as hard on its driveline and it wasn't tinkered on by AMG, so there was substantially less to go wrong. As long as you aren't getting one of the exotic, class topping trims, then you're probably going to get a decently reliable car. Standard shocks and reasonable engines tend to last.
