Diane Guerrero, Stephanie Beatriz - What Else Can I Do? (From "Encanto")

  • Published on Jan 12, 2022 veröffentlicht
  • Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto” tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal-every child except one, Mirabel (voice of Stephanie Beatriz). But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

Isabella is obscenely powerful. The only member of the family who's powers could be argued to be stronger is Pepa, but Isabella's are more diverse and better controlled. And Bruno was very right, her power grew; just imagine, as the title suggests, she truly explores her potential and figures out her true limits

@MonkeyGirl18 Use google translate. Isabela's name is Spanish. I asked google translate and they didn't pronounce it the same way

    • MonkeyGirl18
      MonkeyGirl18 5 hours ago

@ItzLexiElf it sounds the same way someone says Isabella to me 🤷‍♀️

I even looked it up to be sure and everywhere says the only difference is spelling. They're pronounced the same. If different, may just be the accent.

@MonkeyGirl18 No and yes. Yes they are spelt different, but they aren't pronounced the same. If you hear someone say "Isabella" in English then you can hear how different it is. Just listen carefully to how the madrigal's say Isabela's name and then you can see how different it is from isabella. Because the Isabela we are referring to is a Spanish name. And Isabella is an English name.

@ItzLexiElf Hillarious, Spanish is my first language but as I was writing in English I went for the English spelling without noticing, good catch.

As a former art student, this song really speaks to me. What CAN I create if I truly believe it doesn't need to be perfect or even acceptable or satisfactory; it just needs to BE. I'm sick of worrying about every little mistake I make in my art. I just want to unleash my imagination onto the paper or into the cyberspace and express my truest innermost self to the world. And yet, every time I merely look at the blank page and canvas, I falter. How can I overcome this?

    • NothingHere
      NothingHere 5 hours ago

@Jaoi I do think the movie does clearly shows Elsa's development (though I still think her character is quite bland), so yes I do understand the movie's message. But for one last time, you replied to people talking about the song "Let it Go", not the movie "Frozen".

    • NothingHere
      NothingHere 5 hours ago

@Jaoi I was replying to you, but I seemed to have mixed some parts of my comments as replies to others, which I apologize for. However, some parts were definitely meant as a reply to you. The person you replied to talked about Elsa as a character *within* "Let it Go". Not her character as a whole in the movie. Though now I see that you didn't really notice that, so I disagreed with some of your analyses on Elsa as a character. While I wouldn't say she was smug about it and I definitely do not see Elsa as the "bad guy", it's true that she evaded her responsibilities (which is not something I ever blamed her for) and was clearly very happy on leaving everything behind without actually thinking it through (again by not bothering to check up on the people she loved). "Let it Go" in the context of the story as well doesn't really have a good message. While the guy you replied to might possibly hate Elsa, he/she never actually said that outright. Again, he/she was talking about the song itself with Elsa's character, not Elsa's character in the movie wholly.

    • Jaoi
      Jaoi 5 hours ago

@NothingHere Err whatever, you do you. Think whatever you want, hate her all you want. I don't care. God, for once I wish people eould actually understand the movie for what it is.

    • Jaoi
      Jaoi 5 hours ago

@NothingHere Uhm are you replying to the right person? OMG that's too long for me to read all. I said what I said. I never compared the two songs, i just replied with facts. It's so easy for people to tell others that they should have done this and that when they weren't the one on the situation. Comparing Isabela and Elsa is moot because their situations were way different. Make Elsa the bad guy all you want I don't really care if that's what you think.

    • NothingHere
      NothingHere 5 hours ago

@Jaoi You can't really excuse her not helping Anna after she blasted her heart when she literally did it to her brain before, which btw is literally the cause of all her problems in the first movie.

I like how despite these powers being “gifts”, they’ve come with some downsides resulting in the characters insecurities like Luisa being pressured to be mentally & emotionally strong as she is physically or the pressure Isabella feels to be as perfect as the flowers she grows. The songs come with lessons that even the strongest things can crumble and the most objectively hideously natural things are beautiful in their own way

    • BambiLena666
      BambiLena666 4 hours ago

@{ Gacha_Spade } I love Pepas gift, the one resposible to showing the feelings of the family cause everyone keeps thing bottled up, she makes rain clouds to alert the family of the tensions. And she sometimes ends up hurting the people who are trying to help while carrying the families feelings (like Felix getting soaked or Camillo getting zapped by lightning when hes comforting her).

On Camillo id need to rewatch just to make sure, but I think its interesting 99% of the time he shapeshifts into grownups. I think his role might be a child that is becoming "parentified", where kids try to take the role of a parent to their parents, when a parent is unwell, or emotionally distraught for longer times. Like when hes trying to calm her storm and lightnin zaps him he shape shifts to Felix, Grandma and Agustin. Something one of the "parents" should be doing and not the teenager.

    • 50CCsStat
      50CCsStat 5 hours ago

@yasmine choerry's cherry yes! And not having a gift = failure, or having a gift that isn’t helpful = failure, adding to the perceived pressure by other family members (don’t mess up or you’ll be ostracized).

    • { Gacha_Spade }
      { Gacha_Spade } 6 hours ago +1

And in the movie Pepa is pressured sometimes to be happy. and camillo might be pressuring himself to take responsibility for other people

    • Sword of Tauberg
Sword of Tauberg 23 hours ago +4

Think the downside comes from the unreasonable expectations put on the person blessed with the Gift, rather than the Gift itself. The movie is a reminder to not put all our burdens on those we think are capable of bearing them, and to accept that everyone needs a break, comfort, and room to grow.

    • BambiLena666
      BambiLena666 Day ago +7

@Re- Blitz in my mind all the character abilities are strenghts(or skills) that represent a role in the family. I think Bruno corresponds to the person that can "see" problems and tries to warn people, especially when they ask for advice, but the people he wants to help with his warnings just end up resenting him for it. On one hand if they give up on something because he warned them it would be bad they resent him, if his prediction comes true they resent him for "being right" and eventually they start connecting the person to bad moods and bad things happening to them.

The downsides happen when the family pushes them to just do and be one thing, putting huge expectations on their skills and roles instead of them as people.

Sundews are actually not that dangerous, if they could even be called that. Their sticky hairs are only strong enough to keep struggling insects inside, a human can easily tear a finger away without harm.

I suppose, her powers might supercharge the sundews as its apparent she can influence the plants to grow as if they were moving, and also make them larger and strong enough to carry people. Its a sweet gesture regardless though, shows the newly forged bond between them!

@NotAGoodUsername 360 I mean Mirabel was healing the family or rekindling the candle when she listened to both Isabella and Luisa. She was literally healing the family. That's why the cracks were disappearing.

    • NotAGoodUsername 360
      NotAGoodUsername 360 Day ago +22

It's because she's a genetic throwback to Abuela Alma herself- she projected herself on Isabella and put her on a pedestal, which was only reinforced by Bruno's rare blessing prediction, promising her a "dream life." So Abuela started living vicariously through Isabella and encouraged her to indulge in all the decadence Abuela forfeited to become the matriarch, with no regard for who Isabella actually was or how she felt. She is Abuela's fantasy, which is why she thinks nothing of arranging her marriage and trying to breed the magic back.

It may also be why the cracks started to heal once Isabella started breaking free of Abuela's influence- because she's the most blatant example of Abuela's corruption and unintentional abuse. She's really the only one that points to Abuela's subconscious desire to take advantage of the miracle for her own gains, which is precisely the attitude causing it to crack and burn out.

@Ashleigh Marie Context clues for the win! The lines before this one, as well as her conversation with Mirabel before the song, explain that she's used to needing to be perfect. The town and even her family expect it of her. I know it's just part of the song but I love how Isabella herself helps Mirabel and let her enter in her feelings somehow instead of pushing her away as always. 3:17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

3:18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

3:19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

3:20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

3:21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.'

14:6 Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

14:7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.'

Though I may not consider Encanto as my number 1 Disney film, it definitely did great in showing family relationships.

No one's mentioning it but these scenes also demonstrated just how powerful Isabela is. She doesn't just control "flowers". It's all sorts of Colombian and non-Colombian plants in general. She swings on vines like Spider-Man, punches holes with their stems, summons giant venus fly-traps and who knows what else.

I love how their relationship isnt just magically fixed cause Isa admitted she was behaving for the family. Mirabel isnt really LISTENING at first, still focused on fixing the magic, but as the song goes on, and Isa pulls her up, including her in her struggle, Mirabel's focuses shifts naturally to helping Isa and THAT heals the magic. It's so subtlety done, I love iiiiiiiit

I love the subtlety of how Isabella embracing her imperfections has her interacting more and more with her sister. She's feeling less lonely the more comfortable she gets without having the pressure to be perfect. What starts as her pretty much singing to herself ends with her singing with her sister and the healing hug.
It's especially cool when countered with their sister Luisa's song which has her insecurities making her a doormat to anyone who ever needs anything and growth for her is taking a moment to stop being the hero... even if that leaves Mirabel to grab her own glasses and figure out how to manage a donkeycorn. Things that when she's being her usual do everything self that Luisa would definitely be doing for Mirabel. We see her put her glasses back on her right before the fantasy break. Mom friends need a break and perfectionists need to know they're loved regardless of if they're perfect or not. This movie is just so full of insights!

  • Fischl von Luftschloss Narfidort

1:33 I love how Mirabel sings this part in the same tune with Isabela's verse in "We don't talk about Bruno" adds the cherry on top for ths song as is very broadway musical-like.

    Lyrics:I just made something unexpected
    Something sharp, something new
    It's not symmetrical or perfect
But it's beautiful and it's mine
    What else can I do?
Bring it in, bring it in
Good talk, bring it in, bring it in (what else can I do?)
Let's walk, bring it in, bring it in
Free hugs, bring it in, bring it in
I grow rows and rows of roses
Flor de mayo, by the mile
    I make perfect, practiced poses
So much hides behind my smile
What could I do if I just grew what I was feelin' in the moment?
(Do you know where you're going? Whoa)
What could I do if I just knew it didn't need to be perfect?
It just needed to be? And they'd let me be?
    A hurricane of jacarandas
Strangling figs (big), hanging vines (this is fine)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else can I do?
Can I deliver us a river of sundew?
Careful, it's carnivorous, a little just won't do
I wanna feel the shiver of something new
I'm so sick of pretty, I want something true, don't you?
You just seem like your life's been a dream (whoa)
Since the moment you opened your eyes
(How far do these roots go down?)
All I know are the blossoms you grow (whoa)
But it's awesome to see how you rise
    How far can I rise?
Through the roof, to the skies
    Let's go
    A hurricane of jacarandas (woo)
Strangling figs (go), hanging vines (grow)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else, what else?
What can you do when you are deeply, madly, truly in the moment?
    (Seize the moment, keep goin')
What can you do when you know who you wanna be is imperfect?
    But I'll still be okay
Hey, everybody clear the way, woo
I'm comin' through with tabebuia (she's comin' through with that boo-yeah)
Making waves (making waves), changing minds (you've changed mine)
The way is clearer 'cause you're here, and well
I owe this all to you
    What else can I do?
(Show 'em what you can do)
    What else can I do?
    (There's nothing you can't do)
    What else can I do?

Okay, there is an amaizing little detail here:
Isabella's dress for the most part of the movie is rather light and flowing.
But after it became colored with the pollen it became just a tiny bit heavier. It's clearly still the same dress and it is barely noticeable but the fabric seems just a bit more rigid than before.

This song really shows that nothing, and nobody is perfect - You always have to have just one flaw, either minor or major, but of you want to be perfect, you’ll have to hide that, which is creating more emotional stress, and you want to let it out, but you can’t, because you want to be perfect, you want to get amazing grades, be beautiful all the time, and have an amazing personality. And this song can also show that Isabela was studying flowers and other plants, as the way she names them, such as “A hurricane of Jacarandas, Strangling Figs, Hanging Vines!” And much more. You know, this woman is basically a nature goddess - if a species was going extinct because it had no more plants to eat, Isabela could make those plants - She could save entire ecosystems, actually, but Abuela is just making her the pretty girl who creates roses.

I just love this song. So, SO rarely in movies do we get songs about women coming together and loving each other. It's even rarer for sister, in my opinion. So to just see a song that's all about sisterhood in the literal, familial sense is beautiful! It's such a wonderful thing to see sisters supporting one another, and to have that experience captivated in song is awesome. Especially since brothers get that kind of arc all the time!

    • brina
      brina 6 days ago +2

@Kattie V.2 I feel like you should try to revise the movie, perhaps take notes of the points you didn't like and try to do a bit of research to see if some of those points stand as valid.

I've briefly studied cinema and when something wouldn't click for me I would legit make it my task to figure out every instance in the movie that left me feeling like that. Literally taking notes of what I believe could improve to make a movie perfect under my vision (a movie- art will never be perfect since perfection varies so much under the opinion of every viewer)

Not attacking you, I just think some bits can be disproven by going over it with factual backup.
I'm entirely Costa Rican, yet being born as a 1st gen kiddo in the U.S basically caused English to hip check Spanish out of the way of being my first language

Yet Im still able to pick up when Spanish sounds forced/translated/shoe horned in and when Spanish dialogue was actually written by a Spanish speaker, yanno- written first in Spanish instead of having to translate it from an Anglo-Saxon dialogue to a Romance dialogue..

These are one of the few movies that incorporate Spanish without it feeling forced or lacking a coloquial feel to it.

One of my biggest pet peeves in "latino" oriented movies is when a character says something in Spanish and then literally repeats the same thing in English.

And Disney is no exception of doing this but ! I was so pleased whenever Spanish phrases were thrown in or just a casual usage of a word and the movie trekked on as it naturally should. They're all Spanish speakers really, so it makes sense they carry on the conversation naturally with no second mention of the Spanish bits being thrown in.

See Camilo calling Pepa Mami instead of Mom or mommy when trying to ease her down. Its the lil details dude, I know my mom hated it when I would say Momma, Mommy.
      "No, es Mami."

And like I mentioned in another comment, Isabella mentioning Tabebuia, like- thats the actual name of the native plant- a native Hispanic plant.

Then, needless to say, the perfect pronunciation of throwaway words.

The "Ay Agustín!" From Julieta. Tell me you've never heard a Latino put an "Ay!" Before heaving out an exclamation.

And then there's We Don't Talk About Bruno

      My dude

They literally streamed in Pepa, Felix, Dolores, Camilo, Village Fish Lady, Village tummy guy, Village priest and Isabella's perspective on Bruno all in one song AND and !!!!! They freaking told a story (various stories if we get technical) about Bruno (yanno, the centerpiece of the song).

How many songs do you know are able to tell a story?

Now tell me, how many of them did not freaking slap? Its so hecking awesome listening to a song AND a story at the same time.

If anything these are one of the few songs I've ever heard that can set in so many elements and streamline them into one steady and clear message: Bruno is a mysterious key character and Mirabel will need to get HER OWN perspective and opinion on him EXACTLY because of how many random opinions everyone has on Bruno.

If anything, if you think the song can feel a bit random and confusing its literally because that's the end goal of the experience of listening to it. You're supposed to feel as disoriented and overwhelmed as Mirabel. By the end of the song you should be wanting to straighten out the jumbling overload of info in your head- yanno.... just like Mirabel.

The little details in this movie break me. When Isabela pulls Mirabel in for a hug, her glasses get shifted. It looks just like the way mine do when you lay against them. Not to mention that hug was adorable.

Out of all the songs, I relate to this one the most. I’m not expected to be perfect like Isabella, but I do sometimes feel trapped by my insecurities and fear of being perceived as weird. This song makes me want to break free of that

@The Fish kind of bummed Dolores didn't get a song because she's the one I connect with most but I feel like if everyone got a song the movie would be incredibly long 😂

Same, my little sister helped me understand I shouldn't do everything our parents wanted me to do while she told them she was not as intellingent as me,she made me realized I was carrying too much, that I had a voice and I can do whatever I want, and that our parents should support us but if they don't, she would be there for me. It made me cry no gonna lie

I love the way the cactus pops out of the ground almost like a pimple popping up on someone's face, and Isabela's shocked expression like "wtf is this??" and then this song comes on. So gooooood

I thought she will be the same old stereotypical arrogant pretty older sister.. but the character development was awesome and awe inspiring. And when she said she’s marrying for family.. I felt sad cos many girls sacrifice their precious life for families esp from where I come from. That was also heart touching which caught me off guard.. Isabela- beautiful inside out.. 💜

I also interpret the line like this: for years, Mirabel for years always suffered at the hands of Isabela’s verbal and sometimes physical abuse. But when she sees that Isabel is at this certain breaking point where she needs support, she helps her. Instead of spiting her and ignoring her for all the abuse she had given her, Mirabel decides to help Isabela instead and help her grow. And this ends up being a good decision, because it ultimately mends their relationship.

Lyrics: I just made something unexpected
    Something sharp, something new
    It's not symmetrical or perfect
But it's beautiful and it's mine
    What else can I do?
Bring it in, bring it in
Good talk, bring it in, bring it in (what else can I do?)
Let's walk, bring it in, bring it in
Free hugs, bring it in, bring it in
I grow rows and rows of roses
Flor de mayo, by the mile
    I make perfect, practiced poses
So much hides behind my smile
What could I do if I just grew what I was feelin' in the moment?
(Do you know where you're going? Whoa)
What could I do if I just knew it didn't need to be perfect?
It just needed to be? And they'd let me be?
    A hurricane of jacarandas
Strangling figs (big), hanging vines (this is fine)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else can I do?
Can I deliver us a river of sundew?
Careful, it's carnivorous, a little just won't do
I wanna feel the shiver of something new
I'm so sick of pretty, I want something true, don't you?
You just seem like your life's been a dream (whoa)
Since the moment you opened your eyes
(How far do these roots go down?)
All I know are the blossoms you grow (whoa)
But it's awesome to see how you rise
    How far can I rise?
Through the roof, to the skies
    Let's go
    A hurricane of jacarandas (woo)
Strangling figs (go), hanging vines (grow)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else, what else?
What can you do when you are deeply, madly, truly in the moment?
    (Seize the moment, keep goin')
What can you do when you know who you wanna be is imperfect?
    But I'll still be okay
Hey, everybody clear the way, woo
I'm comin' through with tabebuia (she's comin' through with that boo-yeah)
Making waves (making waves), changing minds (you've changed mine)
The way is clearer 'cause you're here, and well
I owe this all to you
    What else can I do?
(Show 'em what you can do)
    What else can I do?
    (There's nothing you can't do)
    What else can I do?

I love the mindblowing thought process she goes through so quickly at the start
"Huh, I made a cactus, didn't know I could do that...wait...why didn't I know I could do that? I've had these powers for like a decade, how have I never tried to make a cactus in that time?... *What else can I do?* "
