- 3 weeks traveling through Japan right after it opened in October 2022. Using the Japan Rail Pass and so the Shinkansen, ferries, local trains, and buses to explore Japan from Tokyo to Hiroshima. This is by far the most aesthetic country I visited and I already can't wait to go back.
Most of the video clips are shoot with the Fujifilm X100V and the Eterna Profile. In my opinion, you can use the X100V for video it's just a little bit more limited in terms of movement. The shoots from the Contax T2 were all camera scanned with a Fujifilm X-T3 and a Macro lens.
Gear used:
Fujifilm X100V

This is one of the most inspirational and gorgeous showcases of photography on the internet. Both this video and you deserve much more attention! Keep this kind of content coming!
@Michael Schuh An absolute pleasure to watch. You just need to know that your content is bloody brilliant, and you'll see how so when the algorithm finds you too.
Thanks so much, Conall ❤🙌. I really apricate your kind words and I will try to keep up the quality 👍.
Wow... this took my breath away.
Imagine going back to this video in 5 years time to relive your trip... I'm jealous 😁
As a fellow X100V user, I would also love to better understand your workflow. Your Provia edits are stunning!
This video has reignited my love for photography, it's so well put together! Beautiful work man!
Wow, thank you so much David! I'm happy that I could inspire you that much. With that, I did all I could have to ask for ☺❤
one of the most beautiful videos on youtube. I'm enjoying every second of it!
Thank you so much for the nice words 🙌 I hope to create more content like this ☺
This video (and channel) deserve much more attention! Loved every second
Thank you very much ❤ really appreciate that ☺
honestly the best photography video Ive ever seen. photos taken with x100v with one of my favorite songs in the background, what more could i ask for
Thanks so much, Kenneth ❤ That means a lot to me. I will give my best to keep the quality going 🙌
This was absolutely beautiful! I'd pic a favorite image but there's just too many to choose from! Keep up the great work 👏
Photography in Japan almost feels a bit unfair, like you can basically point anywhere and get an awesome scenery. Amazing pictures!
@Michael Schuh Und die X100V ist wirklich ein Monster wenn es darum geht diese Ästhetik einzufangen, wie hier gezeigt.
Haha 😄 yeah, I also had this feeling very often. This country is so aesthetic that you can't fail to get some nice shoots.
Great vibes here, Michael. Love the mix of vlog and street shooting! really well balanced👌
@Michael Schuh my pleasure!
Thank you very much Hugo 🙌
Great video! Love the overall chill vibes here. Do you mind sharing your itinerary or how you planned your trip in Japan? Any helpful resources/guides to plan a trip there?
Thank you very much 🙌. Sure I'm always happy to help others get an easy travel and photography experience. So we bought a Japan Rail Pass for 3 weeks and therefore we planned our trip around places we could easily access with the pass. For detailed planning when on location I can highly recommend the japan-guide website and for photography-specific spots, the Pat Kay Japan Guide is absolutely worth every penny. Other than that I planned this trip for at least 5 years so my google maps were full of markers from things I saw everywhere online 😅 . From Pinterest, Instagram, or photography websites.
But honestly, Japan is so beautiful you can't go wrong ☺. Just check the sessions for nice weather. Autumn was great because of less rain and a pleasing warmth. But I read that summer is very rainy and humid so I wouldn't recommend going then.
If you got some detailed questions about a location please feel free to ask!
Beautiful work! I really do think this channel deserve much more recognition
Thanks mate ☺ appreciate that 🙌
Hey Michael! I'm currently in the process of creating a free Fuji Recipes website & app that focuses on the X100V and it's future versions.
Looking for some lovely RAW photos to use as samples for our recipes. Would you be interested in supplying some?
We are asking some of our favourite X100V creators this and will ofcourse tag them on the site.
Appreciate your time, Japan is bloody stunning! Fuji Fam for life
As someone who is planning a trip to Japan, this was very helpful! Maybe next time you can include the focal length of each photo. I am in a process of choosing which gear to take.. Which focal lengths did you find most useful? Do you think I can do it all with a 24-70 2.8 or worth going with a 24-70 f4 + 35mm 1.8? Any suggestions?
@Miguel Marques in terms of available light for example when it's night, yes 2.8 is good. You may end up with an ISO of around 640 but this is still good in my opinion. If you want to know about background separation. That is totally subjective. For me, it would be enough ☺
@Michael Schuh so 2.8 would be enough for street photography in tokyo, for example?
Hi Miguel, I'm happy that this video could help you. I was thinking about including the focal lengths but then I was too lazy 😅 sorry. But If you have some specific questions about a picture please tell me and I can give you the metadata 👍.
In my opinion, a 24-70 2.8 is the most versatile lens you can have for travel and it will probably work 90% of the time. Also for Japan, it's a good choice because you can get nice indoor shots (12:33 shot at 24mm) with the wide angle and zoom in for some compression with the shrines (12:57 shot at 70mm) 👍. Other than that I think a telelens is never a bad idea. But for this trip, I just want to save some weight by taking the X100V for a lot of the time and this worked out great for me because I shoot at 35mm anyway most of the time. So it kind of depends on your style ☺.
Sooo many amazing shots! Even more excited for my X100V to arrive now. One question, did you apply anything specific to the Classic Chrome/Provia for the colours to pop?
@Michael Schuh thanks a lot for the tips! Subscribed 🙏🏽
Yeah man, the camera is amazing I hope that you get it fast 🙌. For in-camera adjustment, I would recommend pushing it a bit in the raw development. And in Lightroom, just adjust the tone curve a little bit for the mids or highs that will already bring a lot. For the night pictures, I almost always used a Black Pro-Mist 1/8 Filter. That softens the highs and gives you more flexibility for the colors of the highs. Hope I could help you ☺.
This is incredible!!! New sub here ❤️🥰
Cool video! Would love to see your process about ajusting files, cause your Provia looks beautiful
@Mac FC You got a god point there ☺ a may will do it ;)
@Michael Schuh I can't guarantee that it will be your video that gets the most clicks, but I know that Fujists are very interested in the science of color (film simulations, recipe, raw editing...). I do personally ;)
Do you think the interest in this would be big enough? I thought about making something like this but I'm not sure if so many people would like to see my workflow ☺
Bro, this is amazing. How did you get the colors to look so good, namely for the X100V? That's the camera I have. Also, do you have a more detailed itinerary anywhere? Would love to know the names of all the places you visited
@Michael Schuh Thanks a lot for the recommendations! I will definitely add those to my itinerary. Keep up the great work and hope to see more from you soon! 🙂
@Larry Starkiller So some recommendations I can give you in Kyoto are Ginkaku-ji and the samurai experience Kyoto. This was also the place where the guy played the bamboo flute ☺. Autumn is a fantastic time to visit Japan you will have some nice light 👍. In Tokyo, I would recommend spots like Akihabara or Asakusa. These are all pretty common places but its for a reason ☺. For small shrines, I would suggest the Fujiomurosengen Shrine near Mount Fuji. It's a really beautiful shrine that's not so crowded but very charming.
@Michael Schuh Yes, please do! And yes, if you have a list or something of the specific shrines, temples, etc. that you visited that would be awesome. Some of them like Fushimi Inari or Itsukushima Jinja are easy to spot, others less so. If you don't have this though no worries. I'm planning a trip to Japan this fall and would love to see some of the things you did. Where was the guy with the bamboo flute?
Thanks, Larry. I'm thinking about making a video about my editing workflow because so many asked about it. But mainly it's about hitting the right light and white balance, sorry if it sounds a bit vague 😅.
Do you want to know the places I visit in detail? Because a rough itinerary is in the video description :)
nice music, nice video. really good set up. I enjoyed watching the pictures
happy to know that ☺I will continue to produce this kind of content 💪
Stunning Images!
Wonderful
absolutely fire shots! that short clip with he bamboo flute would have killed me. man cry for sure
haha yes 😄 I also really loved the bamboo flute. Gave me some samurai movie feelings ☺.
Keep it up Michael!
I will 😄 It will just take some time for the next video to come out
I love the feeling of your film...thank you.
there's a ton of good photos there. Are they straight out of camera jpegs or are twicked from the profile named
?
Thanks Pablo! Some of them were good as they are so I took them straight out of the camera and some of them are taken in RAW and then edited with the profile in LR. The Fuji JPEGs are already amazing but overall I would always go for RAW just to have the option, in the end, to may change the profile or edited more in-depth.
Amazing Video👍🔔✨😊
Great video mate, are these Fuji jpegs or edited photos or Fuji provia recipes
Thanks mate 🙌. These are RAW photos that I edited with the Film Simulation in Lightroom. I always try to keep them as close to the jpegs as possible and check them regularly. I like to have the RAW for the dynamic range and the possibility to switch between color and bw if I want to.
Amazing
nice work! all jpeg? did you color grade your videos?
Thank you :). No, I worked with the camera profiles in Lightroom. But I always try to get them close to the original jpeg, most of the time they are already great and just need some minor tweaks which is just more manageable with the RAW files.
I filmed in Eterna and adjusted the black and white point, so the color grading was like 5 seconds 😅. I hope I could help you 🙌
evening coffee with this video, worth it
Haha nice 😄time well spend buddy 🙌
mate. im headed to japan in march. ill be in kyoto for a few days. where can i see the flute ceremony in the vid and the samurai armor. pls pls pls. thank you!
Hey mate. You can see that in the "Samurai experience Kyoto". Just google that and you can book it over Airbnb 👍. I wish you a loot of fun ☺
