  • Fresh from the 2021 New York Comic Con, the cast of Critical Role-- a massively popular livestreamed tabletop roleplaying game show--- discuss The Legend of the Vox Machina, a new animated series based on their first D&D campaign.
The Legend of Vox Machina is an adult animated fantasy-adventure series that follows Vox Machina, a band of misfits with a fondness for boozing and brawling. In a desperate attempt to pay off their mounting bar tab, these unlikely heroes end up on a quest to save the realm of Exandria from dark magical forces. From a sinister necromancer to a powerful curse, the group confronts a variety of obstacles that not only test their skills, but also the strength of their bond.
The Legend of Vox Machina is based on the beloved characters and adventures of Critical Role’s first live-streamed tabletop role-playing game (RPG) campaign.

I like how the animators pretty much just directly imported Laura Bailey's eyebrows onto Vex's head.

    • Hafidz Murshidie
Hafidz Murshidie 8 months ago +2

Vex has Laura’s lips as well… But if you really look at it, almost all of the characters has some facial features that resembles the players… So that makes the voices much more believable to be coming out of the characters..

      Liam Ross Year ago +6

@HighSpeed StrongStyle to be fair trying to picture d&d characters in your head can be hard sometimes so just picturing the player with race and class features helps. apparently humans can’t imagine faces that they haven’t seen before

I really hope they get to some press on a late night show before it’s release, like Matt appearing on Colbert and talking about DND would be so cool to see, would also probably be a huge moment for Matt

@Fulcan Mal no it's because Clip-Share channels are inherently independent for the most part. So no studio paying for publicity. If Amazon wants to promote it on late night, they can.

@Fulcan Mal To add on to K3v1n's comment: If we want to go further, Colbert has played a oneshot with Matt DMing for Red Nose Day a couple years ago (and is still up, I believe, on the CR channel itself plus he seemed to be elated the longer he played), so it wouldn't be that unlikely that Matt or Travis could make an appearance on the show the closer that the Legend of Vox Machina gets to release imo.

9:30 I think I figured it out, cause I felt the same and had to think about it.
The Briarwoods was the first time that they/we had begun to form head-canon for the a Villain with depth and scale; imagining comic-book or tv-show cinematic breakaways to how the Briarwoods were preparing for an encounter, manipulating social circles, and setting events in motion in anticipation of Vox Machina, accentuated by the back-and-forth Scrying and subterfuge.

    • H Hylobates
      H Hylobates Year ago

But then this animated series is going to cover that same Briarwood arc, so depending if you're a "movie before book" kind of person, might want to save the extended cut of the story for after the summarised version. In that case I'd say start from the beginning and get through the first 23 episode before the series comes out to get all the available background (not that it should necessary), then continue with the Briarwood arc after seeing the animation.

The years in developing these characters paid off, so attached to them and their stories. I'm really glad that this show is made on, and a lot of people will be able to see it. i'm really glad that it can reach even wider audience, outside of the critical role fandom, with a platform like Amazon Prime.
But can I say that it's really sad that a platform like Amazon Prime jumped to the project only after it collected $11.4m from the fans (crowdfunding)? CR had to reach to the fans to make this happen and only after the money started flowing like mad river, is when the big guys are like "yeah, of course we are interested in this project (mumbling to the other CO: didn't we turned those guys down like a month ago? why are we agreeing now? ... oh they made 11 and a half millions already, yeah, i want a piece of that pie) It will be an honor to work with you."

What are you talking about? The nearly 400 hours of Campaign 1 are not going to be turned into just 5 hours of animation. I just want everyone to consider this:
If it wasnt for Resident Evil 6, these people would probably never have met, nor become friends. Just think: Leon Kennedy, voiced by Matt Mercer, worked with Laura Bailey, who voices Helena -- and both were directed by Liam O'Brien. Additionally, Sam Riegel's sister worked on RE6, and Travis Willingham also worked on RE6.

So we all agree that if Matt isn't voicing Gilmore we all riot right?

    • Aswad Chowdhury

Out of the hundreds (literally) of NPCs, Matt has played across all campaigns of CR, Gilmore is my favourite - I will be very sad to hear that Matt is not playing him

    • H Hylobates
      H Hylobates Year ago

@Lyn Thats the thing, there will be equal but opposite rioting if they hire a poc voice actor and it dosent sound like Gilmore is supposed to. They will just be a diversity hire who dosent fit the job, and they would be subjected to CRs worst 'fans'. But if they match Matt's voice there should be zero issue with it.

    • Lyn
      Lyn Year ago +2

@MasumiSeike Well it's just an opinion based thing. I like Aabria. I just didn't get the same vibe from it. Gilmore's integrity was stripped away a little in cannon too based on things that happened in EXU. It's not the same as voice acting the character in a serious way because she was just doing her best GMing the campaign, so that's understandable. It just made me realize how much I loved Matt's interpretation of Gilmore. If we can find someone who can pull off the same sound and personality of Gilmore in the animation, then I really wouldn't mind.

@Lyn Who have we see fail at playing Gilmore?

    • Lyn
      Lyn Year ago

I agree with color representation for any other character. Matt's voice of Gilmore is just amazing. We've already seen someone else voice him fail. I would understand if he didn't voice him, but well Gilmore would not be Gilmore. As long as he has the same flamboyant and sexy flair and integrity of Matt's Gilmore than that's acceptable.

I really want to see how much early stuff is changed because (I'm guessing) Orion Barca won't be playing Tiberious Stormwind. The fact of them starting with the Briarwood arc is kinda good because that was where he left the group... But it's a bit sad that we won't see Grog fighting in the Crucible in Vasselheim, or Clarota and Kim's in the underdark.

    • David Molina
      David Molina Year ago +1

I still think they should include the character, due to the depth of their loss to the Chroma-Conclave. Maybe adding him in flashbacks from there journey through the under-dark.

    • H Hylobates
      H Hylobates Year ago +1

I hope they find a way of including those parts. Maybe they could be retelling the story to another character, going over the most important parts in a short one/two episode summary? Kind of like those annoying anime episodes that recap the last season, when you've just binged it in a day 😆 Tiberius could be very easily cut out if they dont need to go into details. They have to be introducing Kima, Allura, Kashaw, Zahra and Vasselheim somehow.

I'll be honest, if Pike sounds like Gale instead of how she was during the campaign I'll be disappointed. A big part of what made her so lovable for me was how innocent and soft spoken she was while also being a badass and clutch in fights at the same time.
