What I did to avoid spending a lot of money on my Beats, is wait a couple years for their price to fall. I bought Studio 2.0, and back in 2013 I remember they were close to 400 dollars. Now in 2018, I was able to buy a new, unopened pair of Beats, for about 170 dollars. That way that gap falls, giving you more value for what you spend.

@Denil No it's because beats are highly over rated simply because of who made them. Don't get me wrong. The current models are decent, servicable headfones but the mainstream consumer makes them out to be the holy grail of audio tech when in reality there are headfones that are older that have better specs, are more comfortable and are cheaper. I don't so much hate beats as I hate mindless beats fans who scream superiority and have apparently never heard of Sennheiser.

Great vid mate! I use AKG K240's for studio monitoring when mixing, they are comfy, and have great sound. Picked them up for $60.00 USD. I've owned Beats before as well and ended up disappointed with them after spending $300.00 USD on them. The $60.00 AKG's are better for what I need.
Overall, you did a great job with this vid. You hit the nail on the head with your bottom line statement. Thumbs up!

Thank you for a very intelligent post. You covered sales and administration costs, but guarantees are also a factor. The amount of money spent on quality and.or repair issues also raises the cost & price. I do not know the Beats track record, but warranty costs could also be a factor in raising the price.

I've had my beats for 2 years and still use them til this day almost everyday. Honestly I looked at the other brand and I don't like the style, I prefer beats simply because its more sleek and looks better, never had any issues with sound quality either so I can't complain. I do however need to swap out my ear pads which I am excited to do because I will be able to change the style just a little bit.

I even use them for monitoring in production software because the solos actually have a pretty balenced range and the Eqing isnt terrible. Unlike other beats they dont overdrive the bass.

For me, I got them because they filled a need. I have the powerbeats 3 wireless ones. I got them on sale for $90 over BOSE ones at $100
What I have found is although BOSE may be "better", the beats give me what I needed. Decent bluetooth earbuds and a fantastic battery life (they say 12 hours, but I only have used them for 8.5 hours at once and never pushed further yet), and the grips on the side really help since I have issues with some earbuds and that
Not perfect but for the need I had, they were the perfect fit.

I had a College Professor who worked on designing headphones for Beats. He was part of the industrial team and said that the cost of the materials and the manpower to produce a pair of Beats was just $8.00, so they are mostly a fashion statement. Most electronics have absurd margins. Now $8.00 doesn't take into account R&D, but it goes to show how much true margin is in a product and also I worked at Best Buy and we as employees got Beats for $100 instead of $200 on most models. The price we paid was 5% above what Best Buy paid Beats for a pair of headphones, so there wasn't much margin Beats was making. They didn't make the full amount they actually made $92 on every $200 pair of Beats sold, but now Apple owns Beats and they have a tighter relationship with Best Buy, so they are not giving Best Buy much margin on Beats anymore, but before Beats were giving Retailers a huge slice of the Revenue pie until Apple basically came in and said we're taking all the margin back we used to give you, and now Best Buy makes about $5 on every Beats Headphones they sell.

I first heard some Beats at one of those Walmart demo stations. I currently had some $10 Big Lots headphones, and the Beats bass sounded amazing!!! It was like the first time I went to a strip club...those bass hits hit me in my soul, and I couldn't get the sound out of my head for days. However, none of the music I commonly listen to (Pink Floyd, MoTown, Tool, Manson, etc.) is really bass heavy music. Plus $300+ is a huge jump in price from my $10 "Big Lot Beats." Did some research, talked to some audiophiles and they turned me on to the Audio Technica's. They told me that the AT's have a lot less distortion and you get a more true sound from them than the Beats. So I got a $100 xmas gift card from work, and got some Audio Technica ATH-M40X which came with the FiiO E6 headphone Amplifier, and the sound is amazing. I don't know which is actually better, but for the price and quality I'm glad I got the AT's.

Well said. The naysayers aren't quite schooled on the concept of marketing. Beats By Dre are obviously not gonna push out quality sounds like say Sennheiser cans, but when it comes to aesthetics, Beats got every brand beat by a mile. The makers of these cans offer a lesson on how to market and you can't begrudge for that. People will spend their money on how they see fit and we will always value things differently.

Right. Well I don't really have anything to say regarding macs. And even though you are technically right, I'd say that bashing an iPhone and calling it crap...well I wouldn't really take that person seriously since consensus really is that they aren't bad phones. I do however fully understand that they're not made for everyone, but that doesn't necessarily make the product bad. There are tons of competitors in different markets and I'm confident most people would have no problem praising or being able to understand why certain people prefer things differently. The point is that in the tech industry, no one so far has really pointed out that the iPhone by any means is a bad/terrible phone.
I do understand your point and somehow I get the feeling that we might be on the same page.

@Glatroz I never read this infinite stream of comments, so I was giving my opinion on your very first comment, about how you think its bizarre that people find Apple products to be crap, since the make really "great products", about how "great products" can be a really subjective term.

There’s plenty of premium headphones out there with premium packaging and actual quality sound.
If you’re in it for the unboxing or a sexy pair of headphones, go for the V Moda Crossfade II. There’s literally ceremonial red ribbon you cut to open the box.
The Parrot Zik is a classy looking bluetooth headphone that also allows you to alter the sound of the headphones on the fly.
If you’re looking for a wired pair, there’s plenty out there- I have some JBL Synchros s700 that are sexy. And before anyone who is on the Beats side of town tells me Bluetooth is a necessity, your beats already produce low quality sound. Bluetooth reduces that quality even more.
Beats are a headphone meant for style (yet again there’s so many sexier headphones out there) not sound quality. There’s no denying that.

I think it’s all about preference. IMO, Hiphop heads likes the prominent bass along with decent mids and vocals. Other headphones were great for acoustics and pop and other genre. Plus, you cannot discount the fact that beats looks the slickest of them. Just saying.

    RADIN SYAH Year ago

I had two Beats once. Used them exclusively in bed with my iPad. First was a Solo. Broke at the band. Then it was the Studio. Broke at the band. Went to an IT store nearby. Beats on display there had breakages at the same spot. Never again.

Coming from another MKBHD video in 2021, I was expecting to see the resolution of the video drop, but holy sh*t, it's still at 4K. It's crazy how the production value of the average Clip-Sharer in 2021 is that of 2014 Marques.
Also, it's fun to see how heavily his Business degree influenced his videos.

In my opinion, Beats headphones are getting better later these days. I admit that beats were found overpriced and sounded terrible years ago, but not anymore. I've just recently gone to the Apple Store to try some of Beats headphones and they actually sound good. I ended up buying the BeatsX for myself as it is really comfortable to my ears and the sound is pretty decent for casual use (at least it doesn't sound like entry-level buds at all though the price range is on entry-level wireless buds like JBL T110BT which sounds just a little better than the wired Apple EarPods come with iPhone). At $80 price point, I must say that this is the most worth wireless earphone to buy on the market right now.

xele fonte 3 years ago +1

Anybody who truly understands the technicalities that make great headphones knows that Beats Studio 3 are absolute trash. You don't buy these headphones for a longterm investment of 2-to-5 years. Most headphones usually crap out after 3 years but Beats headphones almost feel like they are designed to break immediately after the 1-year limited warranty to get you to fork another $400 for their dollartree material headphones. As far as sound quality and bass, Beats headphones are the best in the business alongside Bose QC 35 II and Sony WH-1000-XM3. As far as noise-cancelling, Beats simply does NOT have any noise-cancelling mechanisms. Whereas Bose and Sony are the industry leaders in noise-cancelling because they are physically and electronically designed to eliminate outside noise, Beats has no electronic mechanics to suck up outside noise. Their only claim to noise-cancelling would be its physical design of a tightly pressed over ear configuration which is very disputable as noise-cancelling. They are not noise-cancelling and Beats should probably be sued for that misnomer. But, where Beats lacks the most is durability. They use the cheapest materials possible to design their headphones in order to increase profit margin. FOLDING THE EARPADS ON BEATS SHOULD NEVER BE DONE. Why? Because they aren't designed to be folded regularly even though they give that appearance. Eventually they will snap because the screws are very fragile and you will have to pay hefty to repair them especially if you're out of warranty. Another issue is the ear cushions leather tears up very quickly. Working out with Beats headphones is a really bad idea as sweat is very destructive to these headphones. If you're an avid user of Beats headphones (daily), you're headphones will not make it past 15 months. So, if you feel $350 is a good investment for 15 months max roughly equating to $25/month (nearly a dollar/day), then be my guest and buy these headphones. But, if you want lonegvity, quality sound, noise-cancelling and don't care about fashion statement, then buy Bose QC 35 II or Sony WH-1000XM3 (would not recommend Bose 700).

This is a well made video. This same principle applies to many " luxury brands". This could be called the truth about marketing. One Digital watch... 5$ A Rollex watch 35,000$ difference? Perceived value.

    • D Jaquith
      D Jaquith 8 years ago +4

There's a difference there, I paid $8K for my Rolex hell almost 20 years ago and I can sell it for almost what I paid for it. Rolex is like wearable "cash." Though Rolex are made of actual solid gold and are labor intensive to build I get your point. Expensive cars that drop in price would be a better example.

As others have said that's an absolutely abysmal analogy to be honest with you.
Unlike electronics when you purchase a watch you buy based on actual value rather than percieved value.
Take for example a brand such as Patek Phillipe which for those in the know is one if not the gold standard of watch making ; I think I'd be right in saying an in house automatic movement of that calibre as opposed to the quartz movement of a relatively inexpensive Casio is well worth the additional fee.
That's a little hyperbole but it's still applicable to Rolex which often has fantastic quality which to the right consumer justifies the price ; I'm not accounting the heritage of the brand (Rolex especially) and countless other elements which factors into the price as well.

Reminds me of my 9th grade class trip to London. Beats by Dre had just gotten their massive hype in Germany and every fuckhead and turd was wearing them... I only had a pair of Sennheiser in-ear headphones at the time and they likely sounded better then the beats (dunno which ones, not the studio but the smallest on-ear). So almost everyone had them or bought fakes at Camden Lock (ffs, why???) and they heard their stupíd pop rap with them on stupidly high volume levels... That was really a pain in the rear!
Later on I bought Sennheiser over-ear headphones but last year they broke: The cable broke and I only have sound with one driver. So, there is one advantage beats have over those: Replaceable cable in case it breaks... ;( They suck anyways!

Saw this video when it came (did not have beats) after hearing about this and listening to music through my mates beats I didn’t really think they were any good
Now skip to the start of 2018 I bought myself a pair of beats studio 3s and honestly they’re the bets things I’ve bought. They have really great sound quality, they are great quality and I think their sound quality has improved since the first second gen ones. Another thing is the battery lasts me pretty much a whole week ( Using them every day for about 5-8 hours) I don’t worry about the battery ever because of how slow it drains and ow quick it recharges. If you have the money and are looking for a decent headphone would strongly recommend beats studio 3s.
Another thing is the song played at the start doesn’t sound like that in your beats even with my beats on.

True, just got my Solo3 headphones and the sound quality is not that great. My $20 Sony in ear headphones have a better sound. But hey, at least I didn't pay full price. One positive is that the Beats are comfortable as hell.

  • Lillian’s Pad
    Lillian’s Pad 3 years ago

here’s the thing. i bought a pair of used wireless Solo 2.0 beats headphones. why? because i have extreme anxiety and earbuds are extremely uncomfortable. on top of that, they aren’t big and chunky. they’re lightweight for me and it helps me with my audio-sensory issues. i can’t stand huge headphones because they feel really uncomfortable for me, so i wear beats. the sound quality is actually incredible and has gotten me out of really bad anxiety situations. so yeah, some people buy beats for the name, some buy to brag, and some buy for a medical reason like PTSD or anxiety. some people say that people who buy beats like to brag about being rich. but a lot of people who have airpods will call people poor for not having airpods. someone said that i “tainted” their friend’s airpods because i nudged the case with my pencil. seriously, think before you speak.
TL;DR: I got Beats headphones to help with anxiety, i’m not bragging, airpod users have a meme about bragging and some people take it too far.
