To me, I never fully saw the latest episodes as filler. We see crime is still present and even worst than before, we see people searching ancient artifacts dating back even before the Old Republic and now the Empire acquiring slave labour culminating in the birth of the Death Star.
Fully agree, that's my take exactly. Whatever adds to the overarching story is much more than simply "filler"
