iOS 14 Hands-On: Everything New!

When you mentioned the hearing accessibility feature, I literally screamed! As a deaf person, I never hear things like the tap, the doorbell, the cat at the door etc. so I’m incredibly intrigued to see how well this feature works, because if it’s good, it will literally change my life! ETA: For those wondering, I use subtitles along with my hearing implants to hear what is said in videos. And rely on lip reading and the implants in everyday life. Just because I use assistive technology, doesn’t mean I am not deaf, because without this technology I would struggle to hear an air horn next to my head, and even with it, I still rely partially on lip reading to understand what is being said.

They finally added a lot of the features I’ve been wanting! A few things that would be nice to add would be the ability to put widgets on the Lock Screen, customize app icons without having to create a shortcut, and set different wallpapers for different home screens

The feature I like the most is the ability to organize my home screen with only the apps I often use and keep the rest out of the spot. And about the topic of who made it first, I don't care who made it first, I only care who made it best!

For everyone saying it’s been on android for years, yes that’s true but as someone already mentioned android has always looked ugly as hell even with all the customaziation it still looks ass. Even if we wait 100 years for a feature already on android, apple would do it 100 times better and looks a lot better. iOS is far better than android not only in looks but a lot of other things aswell. Android will forever be ugly and too complicated for simple daily use.

Upgraded my Note 9 to the iPhone 12 Pro Max and after spending a bit of time getting used to iOS 14, I was surprised to see the capabilities that iOS shares with Android. I expected my jump to iOS to be frustrate me with how restrictive could be, but I was surprised to see that most of the core functionality that I’m used to in my Android phone is now present in iOS, and I think iOS 14 really helped with that

Siri is mother of all the other assistants, Siri introduced virtual assistants to smartphones just like Apple introduced smartphones itself, even if it’s not on par today with Google Assistant/Alexa, Siri is still a decent assistant, I use it all the time, my HomePod is a very good example (since I don’t rarely use any assistants on my phone) sometimes Siri in the HomePod finds the song just by telling her the lyrics, while my Google Home nest and Echo Show don’t. Also Siri is always connected with me so she’s (subjective gender) more accessible and convenient to me since she travels throughout my all of my devices, whether it be desktop, notebooks, mobiles, tablets, watches, smart homes and even my headphones whilst Google Assistant is a bit limited, and Alexa is even more restricted

Mac book is not meant for gaming. No doubt about that. However, I Mac is really good for gaming. I am not saying that it’s best in the business, but it’s not bad either. Mac book serves the purpose of official as well as school use really well. While I Mac can be used for some good gaming also.

I think they are adding these things to make iOS more friendly for Android users. Most people who want to buy an iPhone already do. So to attract new customers means getting people to convert from the Android side, especially given the privacy benefits of being on iOS. Customizable home screen and 'compact UI' were the main reasons I resisted switching to iPhone. I think I will be joining the dark side next year.

Yeah, that's definitely Apple's thing. If they didn't come up with it first, or make the best version of it first (which they have in a few cases) they simply won't incorporate it until they feel they can do it better. It's interesting. It's not a unique way of doing things, other tech companies do it, too, but it is a way of at least creating the perception that Apple is above trends. It's why we still have yet to see a touchscreen Apple laptop or desktop, although I do imagine we will see one someday.

Do u guys remember the way apps opened up before? Like when you’d open an app it would slide in from the right side. It would show the logo, and one defining color from the app covering the screen. Me and my brother used to have this on our phones a few weeks ago, and I remember it being apart of this update. But now it’s gone and I can’t find anything similar to what I’ve experienced

Being partially deaf I'm loving the sound notifications and the ability to look something up when using Facetime. Great video - really clear thanks - have shared it.

The password function was the one thing I wanted, and its poor execution and non-user-friendly set up leaves little to be desired. It doesn't even recognize when you change passwords at times, and you have to actually close the screen by swiping down to get it to register. It will remember the wrong password, and you have to go back and redo the whole process again. I wish you could use the strong password function at any time.

I've been a lifelong android user, and I've tried the iOS. It's true you don't have even a small percent of customization options In the current iOS compared to Android. When I got my first android device, I would play around with it, always changing the colors, widgets etc. But the reality is after a while, you stop caring. You don't pay much attention to the small details like changing different widgets etc. Quoting "Mr who's the boss", after a while, you are more focused on the apps you use rather than the phone itself, and the way those apps perform when I use them is what important for most people. For e.g., Instagram works better with iOS than Android, pubg mobile works better on iOS because it has a beast of a processor, and the awesome lag free fluid experience of the iOS makes up for the small customization issue you have.

Rei Ranmaru There’s a files app in iOS what are you talking about

    • Ranmaru Rei

IMHO, iOS yet sucks. Yes, it's my opinion, it's not objective, but preferences just can't be objective.
Apps? OK. Many apps are shared between platforms. So, in general I'm OK with apps which I use. I don't use Instagram and TikTok. And I don't know any other apps which work better on iPhone, rather than on Android. In general, experience pretty much the same.
Android has some functionalty which is essential for me. Such as File Manager, for instance. Android has it from the beginning.
Also, we see a home screen more often, than anything. Only iOS 14 get some functionalty, such as widgets and ability to hide unnecessary apps.
Speaking about customisation. In iOS you just stuck with default laucher, assissant, browser (until iOS 14), e-mail app (until iOS 14), maps, etc. It's apps that you can't choose.
Actually, I would say, it could be right, that apps are essential and Android provides some unique options with apps which iOS lacks, and those options may be quite essential for user experience.

YES! Exactly. I've tried and used Android phone before. At first I was really excited for the customisation but after that I don't just care about it. The app performance was quite bad, which is more important for daily use.

@gmsunshine I am not colourblind because If I were, then I wouldn't have to set a black and white wallpapers and icon pack because I would be seeing things in black and white anyway. I find a monotone colour scheme to be very aesthetically pleasing.

@MarquesBrownlee Good idea using shortcuts to open the camera with back tap, however I don't think it works :/. For me, it only allows me to take one photo, limits capabilities, and then it does not save the photo and was causing other problems. Same for trying to do it w/ camera though shortcuts, anyone else have this experience?

Hi, I do have a question : somehow I set up on my brand new iPhone 11 a function that allows me to touch any icon in the status bar and they enlarge in a larger window in the middle of the screen. I'm running the latest iOS 14.3
I cannot seem to be able to get that same feature on my wife's iPhone XR running the same iOS 4.3
Any idea how/where to set up that feature? Thanks. Bruce 🙂🙏🇨🇦
