So impressed that this coach was able to take someone with no climbing experience and then give them 15 years of pro climbing experience in just one session. Incredible!

I'm a private teacher (music) and I can see on that teacher that he is EXCELLENT. You see the tension in his face, absolute focus on the student, that constant wish of "I wish he does well, I want him to do well", which is actual mental effort good teachers find themselves in, even though it doesn't really do anything. I recognize on him everything I go through watching students :)

This reminds me of a guided weekend trip my then-girlfriend and I took a couple decades ago in NH. The first day we went with the beginners group since I had never rock climbed before. My girlfriend, however, had been rock climbing for over a decade at that point. A group of about 10 of us were trying to go up a particular route, and even the others with some experience were struggling. My wife put on the harness and basically didn't stop moving until she was at the top. It was a joy to watch her climb - and it was completely obvious that she was no beginner. (Unlike this, it was no secret that she was only there to climb with her boyfriend.)

I really like the fact the coach is just feeding him as much as needed.
I like professors who doesn't stop at "that's lesson 1, ponder that for a few weeks" : if your students is good, check all the steps, and want more (and can safely get more), just give it to them, even flashing through everything.
And that's just a magnificent teaching experience, in the end, maybe you'll have witnessed and helped the rise of a legend.

Came across this video by chance but decided to check it out. Such a great video! This young instructor was so caring and enthusiastic and knowledgeable, as someone with anxiety I felt like I would be so comfortable with him and he would put me totally at ease. I have absolutely no interest in rock climbing myself other then the respect for the physical strength and endurance that is required to do so. I do however love watching videos about a professional messing with an instructor of their chosen sport. That being said this instructor is awesome! Great spirit awesome personality clearly loves to see his students perform. This guy deserves a big raise for sure he loves his jobs and cares about his students as he was placing himself under him as to break his fall if he were to fall. He's 13/10 the guy that I would want to employ if this was my business!

Oh, that was what he was doing? Makes sense now. I thought he just had some weird mannerisms on getting ready to catch the climber if falling. But not what I wrote it out loud, I see how stupid idea that would be.
Yeah, I don't know anything about climbing. Or didn't before this video.

    • Nightwishmaster
      Nightwishmaster 3 months ago +1

@Cuyl Shepherdton Actually, after going back and watching it again knowing exactly what is going to happen there are a bunch of other points as well where Magnus gives it away a bit that I didn't really pay attention to the first time, including a few random times his accent totally slips (like around the 14:00 mark it sounds just like him as if he forgot then the next time he speaks it's like he remembers to do the accent again) or he moves in ways only a climber would naturally move. You're right, somehow I didn't catch that the first time!
As soon as he starts the V5 it definitely confirms it but I didn't realize until I went back and watched it closer the second time how many times he makes it obvious early in the video too lol. Though I wouldn't be surprised if the guy caught on pretty early but played it cool, it's exactly what I would do if I were him and I figured it out, I wouldn't say a word unless he confirmed it at the end. He seems like a really good sport about it either way, bet he's a cool dude.

@Para Akula Yep! Awesome instructor, I'd love to take classes with him. I'm so glad I found this video, I grew up climbing a bit outdoors but I haven't done it as an adult (well aside from bouldering at the park) but I've never been in a climbing gym, I've only climbed standard walls at Amusement Park type places. I looked up my local one and it's less than 20 minutes away, I'm going by one day this week to rent some shoes and try some patterns and stuff out! If it seems like my thing (spoiler alert, I already know it's my thing lol) I'll be getting a membership I'm freaking stoked to go! I was getting ready to sign up for a gym membership again (I have limited equipment and weights at home) but this seems like a far, far more fun way to stay in shape!

@Gabriel B. It very well could have also been brought at other points and just not made the video. The video is shot from the perspective of the audience knowing who he is so it's very possible there were other parts that were also cut out since the emphasis isn't on his safety or anything. Based on the way he was talking about Magnus' falls it sounds like that was the one thing he was worried about that he falling pretty aggressively, but again for all we know there are a lot of other bits like the part that was edited in at the end of him falling that were just cut out. It's kind of hard to judge his instruction without knowing how much more unused footage there is they just didn't use, didn't get, etc.

@Faze Lezley No.1 Fan I'd give it at best ok. Maybe they cut it out but the instructor should give a demo in my opinion. Maybe I'm being too cautious but knowing how to fall is more important than knowing how to climb.

    • ShamelessPlug
      ShamelessPlug 5 months ago +12

@Alex Barčovský You're right Alex, but you could see him spotting most of the time, none of us are perfect and this guys a young man making his way into the world of climbing. I highly doubt many begginers are going to throw themselves off one handed like Magnus did then, that would have been one hell of a spot for anyone to correct.

    • Alex Barčovský
Alex Barčovský 5 months ago +2

@sirREGINALD Corrected the fall? He fell, he didnt spot him, simple as that. If a newbie breaks his nose or wrist falling like that, explaining to him why that happened wont help him much. You are supposed to SPOT as a coach, spotting doesnt mean just looking at the person falling, but anticipating where he goes and correcting his trajectory with your hands.

My opinion might not be of any count considering I never received training from a paid instructor and only know what all the locals boulderers taught me when I climbed at LRC but this instructor seems extremely knowledgeable and I think does a fantastic putting the different techniques into word form to help beginners visualize what they are trying to do.
