Why do you think penalties are called? Maybe because the defenses can’t keep up and either commit sloppy falls or intentional falls. But you wouldn’t know that. Since you know nothing about football.

I have to disagree with Shaka when he said the defining moment of the world cup for Messi was the assist against the Netherlands. When his country needed him most. When his country had their back against the wall in a game with lots of aggression and nerves. He delivers against Mexico. That goal relieved all the tension in the game the explosion in the celebration. The goal that sent shivers down the spine of many relieving them of all the built-up stress. That set the tone for Argentina at this world cup. He showed that he can be Argentina's magic man. VIVA LE MESSI. LONG LIVE THE GOAT. 🐐👑

    • Naazahs
      Naazahs 5 months ago +34

Yep. That was the defining moment, 25 minutes away from being knocked out of the world cup and there were so many jitters and Argentina looked nowhere near convincing and then that happened. Blew the roof of the stadium.

When I saw the lineup of Arg, I was relieved. Scaloni knew Croatia was a midfield powerhouse, and to counter it the only way is to overload the midfield so the supply to attack gets cut. Also even after 2 goal lead they kept attacking. This shows mature management from Scaloni.

There's something about Alvarez's second goal that nobody mentioned. As he's coming to the goal area, one of his teammates makes a diagonal right-to-left screen sprint across the area and drags one of the centerbacks with him, who thinks he might get the pass. That opens the space for Julián to charge through, take the rebound on the defender with his chest and volley it past the keeper. Reminded me a lot of what Kempes and Luque used to do in 78'. Smart can opener.

for pppl who thinks messi is lazy or arrogant when spotting him walking alot. he is 35 and reads the game and opponents for his and teams benefit. he use his form, skills and experience perfect for a competition like a WC to not get injured or do mistakes. it's very calculated and with an immense pressure. Now he is in a final again and close to his life long missing achievement. total tactical perfection from messi this WC. he really deserves this throphy.

Messi at 35 still undeniably the best player in the world, which I’ve always said even when this man had his first season at psg, I never doubt my goat Cus I know what he can and will do when he’s in the mood. It’s never been a contest with that other guy besides goals accolades and stats, but as a player no one is on this man’s level. He even has the other true goat Ronaldinho coming to watch and support him. The man still controls pace of game, is the best dribbler on the field, the best passer, best set piece, clutch scorer. First touch and football IQ, stop comparing anyone to Messi, once he’s won the World Cup it’s over for you punks😂, even without wc he’s been to two wc finals, he still the goat.

The only reason we’re talking about if it’s a penalty is because it’s Argentina and people just don’t want Messi to lift all the trophies at the World Cup. Right now he’s in contention for the golden boot, the golden ball, and the World Cup trophy itself. That’s a clear penalty, it doesn’t matter if it was “intentional.” If I slide tackle and try to clear the ball but miss it and hit the opponent, it’s a penalty. Why are we subjecting ourselves to this?

Exactly! Steve also gave the same example. Imagine the same situation happening outside the Box. It’s a clear foul.
I think the only reason that foul raised doubts about its legitimacy was because it was a poor finishing touch by Alvarez. One gets carried away when u consider it. And that’s the reason some pundits find it hard to accept it as a foul.

Croatian here...still not sure if that was penalty which practically turned the game...but that doesn't justify the fact we had no shots on the target for full 70 minutes. That alone doesn't qualify us to advance to the final and so, I must congratulate Argentina. And Messi...I hope he wins the cup, but wether he succeeds in that or not it won't change my mind that he's the best footballer I have ever seen...by far.

  • Hao2k
    Hao2k 5 months ago +35

I think Croatia started making more and more mistakes because they were deflated as their game plan was probably to either go 1-0 or go 0-0 the entire 90 and then go from there because Argentina would then be very frustrated. Going down 1-0 from a penalty due to a foul on your keeper, the player who was keeping you in all the knockout matches, was probably the worst way to concede.

    • Naazahs

It was a relief to see that Scaloni learned from his mistakes from the last two matches - playing park the bus after a two goal lead. He did gave me a start when he substituted Lisandro in and I thought here we go once more for the heart attack but they kept their offence going and that meant that the game was going to be finished in a clean manner.

Penalty for me without question. And a yellow card as well. Good call from ref. Ref could have easily gave a handball for the Croatian defender cheekingly sticking his arm out even though he doesn't actually stick his arm out to block the ball. That was one of the most suttle things I've seen a player do and yet know what he was doing when his arm ever so slightly went towards the ball. I wouldn't have had a problem with a handball being called their

    • A snark

    • WhyZi
      WhyZi 5 months ago +8

@A snark there was no play made for the ball by the keeper. Just because the goalkeeper had a spot doesn’t give him the excuse of clashing the player when there is a % chance that the ball is on target and the player can still take the shot. Totally a penalty.

Well, when Messi is in the team and scores a spectacular goal, spotlight shifts to him but that Alvarez goal was equally good. Yes that first ricochet was lucky but the second one i felt was due to his quick feet and splendid movement in the box from molena which created the required space. Often players of Argentina don't get the due credit in this tournament the way they have maximised the current Messi version.

That penalty was simply a 50-50 call. Yes, the goalie "almost" kept his position, but you actually can see some application of force and a bit modification in position towards Alv at the end. Was close indeed, but isn't a ridiculous decision tbh.

It was a clear penalty in any league. It was a clean 3 - 0. The difference in this game was that Argentina read Croatia game mode.

It was like this Croatia and the one that played against Brazil were completely different teams... You can argue about the penalty, but as a team I think you must prepare for a situation like this and they had no response to it... There were trailing against Japan and Brazil too and here they would have had more time to come back in the game than in the previous 2 games, but they couldn't. The second goal was a big deffending mistake, and the third one was a Messi masterclass.

  • Just Once
Just Once 5 months ago +5

Basically Croatia used the same tactic as they used against Brazil it worked back then cause Brazil is slow on final third they hold the ball longer than usual that gave Croatia time to regroup and defend if they quick with the feet they could have scored more than 4 goals against Croatia. Croatia always vulnerable against Counter attack their Midfield is the only positive thing in that squad it was even showed by Neymar when passed three defense including the Keeper to score goal shows how weak they are in defense when facing that kind of situation. Scaloni really did his homework and Argentina punish them with quick play in final third.

The keeper moved forward to block the shot, and I repeat, SHOT from Alvarez, making all parts his body big, upper and lower. And when Alvarez mishits it, he moves toward the ball after it's going to be played by Croatian defenders and hits the keeper. Its not a pen for me, but the more important bit is that it's in no way clear cut, and VAR should've been involved.

The difference in their defence is that they had not been coming up against the counter. They are great when they are defending behind the ball

When you realize that Alvarez plays behind Haaland and Mahrez at City.

That might change going into the 2nd half of season, haaland is big and the thing that will allow Alvarez to succeed at city is he plays really similar to aguero, I’m not too worried about him tbh, he’ll show his talent whenever he gets the chance

I was actually watching the analysis from former referee. No way that's a penalty. This ref Orsato is 20m behind the ball at the moment and from his perspective it looks like a penalty because he is way behind in line with Alvarez and Livakovic. He should be at that moment from the side watching the action then he would se what Shaka and Frank are explaining. Alvarez flicked the ball to the side and ran into Livakovic. So if anything it should be foul from Alvarez. What nobody is talking about ref had a Achilles surgery and was actually slow to position himself in every critical situation. Not to mention that he didn't see that it should be a corner for Croatia prior to the play that translated into a dubious penalty.
What I don't understand why VAR didn't signal him to at least watch the situation in slow motion. Then he would have whole different perspective. But we saw on this tournament even with VAR still getting the wrong decision. For example Scezny penalty.
I think it's ludicrous what the refs are calling on this tournament and this was the defining moment that changed the whole momentum of the game in Argentina favor.
Why do we have all this technology in football today if we don't use it properly.
      Ludicrous

@Mess iisapig how are they helped boy.Only one that wasn’t a penalty and that’s vs Poland. Argentina made it to the final by playing their hearts out and beating team by team. Everyone crying “rigged” but I guess Saudi Arabia and Netherlands were “rigged” games lmao. Argentina suffered this World Cup if it was rigged they would be breezing and beating everyone 5-0

@Mess iisapig France had 4 penalties in 2018. All mouths shut. Why? Because it’s not Messi
