@deaderer 000 it seems that Lieutenant Winters knew what he was doing on 6 June 1944 assault on Brecourt Manor; his Planning and Execution of his plan are still taught at the US Military Academy at West Point!
Lieutenant Straight, my first Platoon Leader was a former Infantry NCO, we were Paratroopers too. He knew what he was about, and the senior NCOs who were veterans of Vietnam respected him. He led us in combat during Operation Urgent Fury. No matter how small the combat, You can get Dead!
2 decades later in Iraq I served with some of the Finest junior officers in the US Army! Although they were already in ROTC before September 11th 2001, they graduated from the OBC (Officers Basic Course for Infantry) after the attack upon the USA. They Knew their Duty would be to lead men in Combat! Their instructors knew it too (and failed out the incompetent; well, most of them).
Too many of the Majors and above (and some Captains) from the downsizing of the USA Army in the 1990's weren't too good.
The post 9-11 Lieutenants were outstanding! The ones I knew Learned from the veteran NCOs, then did their Duty well.
Those young MEN had Physical Courage (facing danger), and just as important Moral Courage! They backed up their NCOs when we were right (or not too badly wrong) facing the wrath of higher ranking officers!
I was leading a detachment of 4 US soldiers when an Iraqi Platoon was hit in a Complex Ambush. My men poured flanking fire on the enemy while I tried to get us support using the radio. The Major at Battalion TOC kept telling me, "I have No Report of an Iraqi unit in Contact!" Nor could he believe that I was so calm! (As if a Professional and Veteran Infantry NCO should not be performing in a professional manner!) My 2LT was Furious, he coordinated the support we needed, at one point telling the Major to Pull his head out of his @$$ and look outside the bunker, because he would be able to See the Firefight from our FOB! Our Platoon was at a smaller outpost that was further away from my patrol.
I would proudly serve alongside any of those Fine Men from the Platoons I served in combat with!

I want to point something out here. Winters stated in an interview something like “in combat you never go in a straight line, you follow the terrain to your advantage” in the full scene, Winters’ platoon used the hedges and ditches to the cross road. Sobel on the other hand had his guys marching down the road Civil War style which would’ve made them easy targets in combat.

That was a serious problem then, too. I used to have a manual that was given to my great-grandpa who was in the Navy for the Pacific Theatre. There was an entire section on established military doctrine that the Navy had realized was more deadly than beneficial with the new landscape of war.

      John Davis 2 months ago

The whole point is that Sobel is a pussy wearing an extreme cold weather coat, in summer/fall, when everyone else is wearing proper uniform. It's also the contrast in him caring a 45 for his primary weapon, when that is a sidearm. They are trying to show how fucked up he is as an infantry officer. He would be much better suited for command of a pad of paper rather than people.

Literally just finished rewatching Band of brothers last night and will probably start rewatching The Pacific tonight. If you haven't watched either, I highly recommend both. Seeing how hard the Americans fought alongside us all in WW2 gave me an infinite respect for them as a kid and it still holds true now. We all like to make jokes about who did more and who saved who but in reality it was a massive, combined effort by all of the allies that shouldn't be ignored or forgotten. 🇬🇧🤝🇺🇲

@Man4Yaseuha that doesn't explain why even the poor who had no access to advancements in medicine saw their life expectancy rise. The rise in life expectancy was because food especially meat got cheaper which allowed the poor to get healthier and have longer life e expectancy.

@King Jon Starkgeryan i think you have it in reversed my friend. They worked harder, had less bad food choices ie nitrates, lattes, dunkin donuts on every corner. The reason perhaps for shorter life spans was in large part due to yet to be invented of many medical breakthrough technologies. And the soil back then was less tainted by chemicals. 😳. So you see chap things are not always what they seem. God bless you.

The interesting thing about "Hi Ho Silver!" is that this comes from a Ranger from the 2nd Ranger Battalion that assaulted Hill 400 as they charged up the hill. It was documented by Steven Ambrose who was a consultant for the series, and I think either David Schwimmer or the writers fell in love with the phrase. I would love to know whose idea it was to have him use the phrase, it was cool!

I just realized that during all these exercises Sobel makes it EXTREMELY clear that he is in charge by how he dresses and carries himself and holding only a pistol... making himself the most obvious target to shoot first.

In 1970, Sobel shot himself in the head with a small-caliber pistol in an attempted suicide. The bullet entered his left temple, passed behind his eyes, and exited the other side of his head. Both of his optic nerves were severed by the shot, leaving him blind. Soon afterward, he began living at a VA assisted-living facility in Waukegan, Illinois. He died there of malnutrition on 30 September 1987. No memorial services were held for him.

    Fun fact.
The real life captain sobel attempted suicide by shooting himself in the temple. He survived the gunshot wound but the bullet severed both of his optic nerves, leaving him blind.

A few months ago, a group of Russian soldiers made this exact same mistake and ran down an open road in column formation. A Ukrainian sniper took out at least three of them before they were able to take cover.

Fun fact: that old man wasn't really supposed to be there. He just kinda wandered onto the set by accident. But they left it in because it fitted so well.

The best part is right before this when the old brit is trying to get past them and as they come over the bushes he just casually turns around

Out of context, this scene is hilariously surreal. We have what seems like a Ww2 scene where a couple of ass backwards GIs think they're in Germany when in reality they're somehow in Britain and this leads them into harassing a random English gentleman who was just out for a ride in the country. The man was a good sport about it though and was just about to dismiss the whole thing as Yank idiocy. Then, out of nowhere, Ross from Friends comes running up while bellowing the catch phrase of the Lone Ranger, despite not being mounted on any horse, while openly weilding a 1911 pistol.

It's a shame sobel is portrayed so badly in this show, by all accounts, he wasn't the greatest officer but he also wasn't completely incompetent, I believe he was also awarded a bronze star on D-day
