For the brand that rewrote the book on muscle-car horsepower, it would've been a disappointment if the pinnacle of the Hellcat V-8 didn't crack four figures. Thankfully, when it comes to horsepower, Dodge isn't in the business of disappointing. That's also why for the grand finale it resurrected the Demon moniker and built the ultimate streetable dragster. Enter the 2023 Challenger SRT Demon 170. It summons an otherworldly 1025 hp and 945 pound-feet of torque from its supercharged 6.2-liter V-8.

I’m a BMW fan till my very last breath, but seeing this makes me kinda emotional. Never really liked muscle cars but I always had respect for them and their capabilities. This is truly the end of the ICE. Once you see Dodge going electric, it’s really over cuz Dodge has always been the king of muscle. The most impressive thing about this is that an OEM production vehicle can handle and put down all that power on a prepped surface without destroying itself in the process.. Lol. Neat.

    • Richard Bossman
      Richard Bossman 2 months ago

Easy really, build to the same specs as guys are modding their cars to over 1000 whp and offer it from the factory. Most ones don’t do it because of the warranty issue when people start beating up on them and it isn’t easy to figure out when they pushed beyond what the car was made to do. Then they have to worry about finishing returns on pricing these cars since few can buy them and they make less off them unless they price them ridiculously ( Ferrari/Bugatti prices for a Dodge would be stupid regardless of the performance).

As someone with a 70's era Challenger in his garage I will say I love this car... it's way out of my price range sadly. I'm more than a little bitter that, in general, the automotive direction towards electric as this is largely due to government coercion and NOT due to market and/or technology.

    • wally walton
wally walton 2 months ago +1

I was in the same position as you are now. I owned a 1970 Plymouth AAR cuda since 1973 that I absolutely loved and kept for 48 years. But the longer I owned and drove the car which I did, the less and less I enjoyed driving it. Old cars are amazing to own but actually driving them is not so great after a while. They drive pretty crappy, ride pretty crappy, crappy seats with vinyl were quite uncomfortable and made my back and ass sweat to soaking wet, were fast for the time but not so much now, were poorly insulated so heat from the engine bay and exhaust underneath made the car get quite warm inside even on cooler days. And honestly I got sick of the attention the car drew everywhere I went and I got sick of telling the "My cuda" story. So even though I swore I never would I sold the car in 2021 and because the car had appreciated in value so much over the years I was able to buy a brand new '21 Challenger Scat Pak paid in full and boy I gotta tell you SOOOOO much better and way more actual fun to drive. Don't really miss the 'cuda and definitely not sorry I sold it. It was time.....

    • noncog1
      noncog1 2 months ago +1

Then whos buying all the electric cars? And why is the quickest vehicle in the world electric?

    • Hal Jalikakik
      Hal Jalikakik 2 months ago

@noncog1 I'm not saying there isn't a market for coal powered cars... I'm saying it is artificially boosted by the government/s policies... NOT buyers. The fact that Dodge's president of this division cited MULTIPLE times the regulatory push towards electric kind of makes my point.
Case in point... the market wants the sound of an engine or Dodge wouldn't be putting fake noise into their upcoming electric. If the sole driving factor was customer preference there still would be a market for Duracell cars... it would be much smaller however and, maybe, over time they would win over market share... or maybe not. I'd be OK with that... I do NOT like government/s like CA, for example, trying to put laws in place to make gasoline powered cars ILLEGAL. It's antithetical to a free society and frankly, it's stupid when the state cannot produce enough electricity for their needs right now and has no apparent long term plan to address this shortfall except to add drastically to electricity demand with dumb ass bans.

    • BRUH
      BRUH 2 months ago

      precisely

    • noncog1
      noncog1 2 months ago

@Hal Jalikakik the electric cars that actually sell in meaningful numbers dont have fake exhaust sound. As a matter of fact, the only cars you can actually buy with fake exhaust sounds are ice cars. The noises are just an example of dodge selling to an emotional, not logical, customer base, which is why they can milk a 20yo architecture better than anyone else, but also why they cant sell anything to anyone other than their established demographic and all their other products fail. Electric cars are coming, itll be a while before i buy one, but most of the market will shift long before i do. Government incentives absolutely make sense in some areas, this one included. Remember, its government coercion that keeps crime illegal, keeps monopolies at bay, and now tries to keep us from destroying this planet

Same as the old Challengers with left over parts, yet Stellantis is charging an exorbitant price. The wide body apparently only applies to the rear of the vehicle for the front fender panels are not wearing the 'fender flares'. Maybe, they ran out and just had enough to make a certain amount. Wait until one drives in for service or tries to acquire parts.
    * We are sure that the heads on the engine are made in China and Brazil and all the parts are outsourced.

I didn’t need a muscle car so I took advantage of buying a Jeep rubicon this year with the SRT392 with XR package before everything goes electric. It has plenty of power for what it is and I took advantage of getting something you won’t be able to get anymore. It’s my anti-electric purchase in honor of the old school cars I grew up with over the last 50 years

This is definitely going to be worth an insane amount of money in the future! It's sad that muscle cars are coming to an end.. Even tho electric cars are using gas, diesel, natural gas and coal to generate energy! Don't even get me started on the unethical ways they get the materials for batteries..

  • cesar garduno

I'm a dodge fan of their diesel trucks but these are disappearing too. They are making it real hard to get parts for the old ones. They are pushing the electrification seriously now. I grew up with old machines now is sad to let them go.

The perfect send off for the great run Dodge had with the Challenger and Charger. I see projections that Dodge will sell over 80,000 Hellcats of all types before they are retired, which dwarfs not only sales of supercharged cars by Ford and GM over the same time period, but obliterated Dodge's modest initial sales projection. The Hellcats were winners whether driving comfortably on the street or competing at the strip. Mustang and Camaro got the nod from the reviews, but customers living in the real world preferred the Hellcats.

"If EVs take hold?"? Mate, most major manufacturers have already given dates for their last ICE cars. We are at the pinnacle of gasoline performance. In the muscle car era it was unthinkable that one of the big 3 could release an 800-1000hp street car with a warranty (and emissions controls!). Enjoy it while it lasts. EVs are the way forward.

I've got a 6 speed, 5.7L 2013 Challenger RT with less than 25K miles on it & am in love with this car! At 63 years old, I plan to have it til I die & thankfully do not have to drive it in Ohio winters. One day I was at the store & a lady about my age was walking by as I started the car to leave. She flagged me to roll my window down & said "Now that is how a car should sound." Made my day

@Matt Agnew Not my way forward :-) I have the funds to purchase a new Challenger but i personally feel the 70 model is a better looking car. So, im going back. No electronics to interfere with my driver input and no one can remotely turn it off either.

Does anyone doubt that if they opened up ordering right now for this car at $200k each that all 3000 cars would be spoken for within 5 to 10 mins, if not even less. What a freaking amazing machine!!! A rear-wheel drive pretty heavy coupe with a full interior that has 1000 HP at the crank which would be about 820 to 830 hp at the tires that will do 0 to 60 MPH in 1.66 seconds!!!!! Are you kidding me??? Here I have a heavily modified and E85 tuned Redeye Widebody Challenger Hellcat with just a tiny bit under 1000 HP at the tires and I am running mid 9's at 140 to 142 mph in the quarter mile and maybe doing 0 to 60 in 2.3 to 2.5 on the track and THIS FREAKING STOCK Hellcat with a 60k mile powertrain warranty is running in 8's an doing 0 to 60 in 1.66 seconds! That is just insane really.

Why increase hp that much? Why not increase by 1hp every month, that way have people scrambling to upgrade all the time? That'll save Dodge so much in development costs, retooling, etc.
I mean how can they keep away from upgrading every year and letting their neighbour possibly have ~12hp more?
It doesn't matter if it's 12hp or 200hp more than the other guy: If you ain't first you're last!
