iOS 16.4 is Out! - What's New?

iOS 16.4 is finally here. Did you install it yet? Thanks for watching, it is always appreciated.

If you are a Developer or Public Beta tester you will have an update as well if you turn off the option to receive beta updates.

I don’t think you mentioned it, but I noticed functionality fixes in the Podcasts app. For me, with tons of podcasts, I found that the Podcast app would consistently freeze (albeit, only 3-4 seconds) the UI (but not the playback) during updates/downloads of Podcasts. This problem seems to have disappeared with 16.4. Also, when I went to my “All” playlist, it used to take 5-10 seconds to appear, and now it only takes a second or two. These two fixes transform an incredibly frustrating UX on my iPhone 12 Pro Max to one that is more seamless.

The security updates, refined crash detection and voice isolation on cell calls makes 16.4 worth trying. Most of the other things I likely wouldn't use or need as far as I can tell. But a great summary and it is appreciated.

From the Philippines. I just updated to iOS 16.4 and tried Visual Lookup using my photos as far back as 2021 (from my then iPhone 12 mini) and I can positively say that it works with our local landmarks that are well known, and with some landmarks suggesting similar landmarks that aren't from the Philippines, so it needs more data. It also works on paintings. I am using the iPhone 14 Pro. Thank you for another splendid video!

I really noticed the Apple Music UI speed; it feels much faster and snappier navigating the app and playing music than before. It feels practically instant to pause play and click on a song for the song to just start playing, where it was previously a second or two delay

iOS 16.4 finally introduces Visual Lookup in the Netherlands as well!
Previously it was only available here when region was set to, for instance, the United States.
This is no longer necessary since it’s now fully integrated within our region!

I notice the camera processing at least some of it has been improved in iOS 16.4. Before it use to change the contrast and brightness ALOT, but I definitely notice in iOS 16.4 it’s much better. I’m glad to see some improvements even thought they didn’t mention it in the release notes I’m pretty sure they did something

Very feature packed version of iOS 16.4 . Hopefully it stays solid and is without bugs till ios 16.5 . There are lot of changes in this update. Thank you Aaron for your informative video.

I updated to 16.3.1 not long ago and realized they shorted the max exposure time on the camera. I use to be able to do 10-11 seconds. Now 2-3 seconds. I have been able to capture some pretty nice night time photos before. Last night with the max 2-3 seconds they were not good.

Informative video and great coverage of the so many features Aaron! The dim flashing lights and voice isolation features are the features that stand out for me. Yes, I'm installing ios 16.4 as I watch this long, but very helpful video.

Hey Aaron. Love your channel. Just want to say. I’m a life long Apple customer all the way back to the original iPod. I am totally in the Apple ecosystem now. And I got my first iPhone Pro w the 14 the day it come out. And if IOS 16 was my first experience w Apple history probably would have been different. I went to Apple for reliability and stability and ease of use. And iOS 16 has been the most buggy release I’ve ever seen. I hope 16.4 will address many issues. Especially the stutter and lag issues. And hopefully w iOS 17 we can all get back to the apple experience w love. If not. I feel Apple may have lost its way.

Great information as always. I still have little bugs here and there and am reporting to apple as always. 16 has taken a very long time to get this good. Definitely worst release from apple in my memory of there software over the years. Hopefully 17 will be much more stable.

Love the new shortcuts especially the Lock Screen and you can have your own icon when you share to your screen when setting up.

Hey Aaron! A new feature I noticed in contacts if you go to the very bottom if there are duplicate contacts it puts a hot link underneath the total number of your contacts…very convenient, however, if you merge contacts it doesn’t tell you which contact list it will merge into…👍

Recently installed new iOS update here in india, earlier the phone had an option of standalone 5G until 16.3.1. Now in this update the feature has been removed and even though i keep on the 5G on toggle, I’m still unable to use 5G normally as i used to earlier when the standalone 5G was present. Seems like a downgrade in this one peculiar thing.

Didn’t see it mentioned, but on the M1 (and presume M2) iPads background Safari video play will work with Safari minimized, or when in Stage Manager. In Stage Manager the icon doesn’t update to show a live view, but the video will continue playing. Memory management seems to have been greatly improved. Edit to correct “iPad” - had written iMac by mistake.

Camera bug is still here. I think you can reproduce it by taking a photo in a slightly dark environment without Night mode active. The difference between what is shown on screen and the final result is mindblowing. The final result is way darker.

Damn what a in-depth review this is pure intelligence and devotion to apple products and technology. Excellent video production standards. 5/5 good work there aaron.

Thanks so much for your detailed introduction to this update. I installed it on my iPhone 14 pro max with no issues. Screen seems smoother and the battery seems to be better than before.

Be careful with this version as there are problems between 16.4 and iWatch 9.4 that Apple cannot resolve. After working with Apple for two days, they admitted that there is a software bug that needs to be resolved and hope to have the fix in 16.4.1. They did do a trouble ticket to their engineering department. It has to do with iWatch communicating with Apple TV and also the iWatch having problems with Apple Music. 😢

Just installed 16.4. I was wondering if there is a way to lock the Lock Screen push and hold settings that change the customization. It seems that I’m always accidentally going into Lock Screen customization. Anyway, I enjoy your videos! Keep ‘em coming!

Focus modes based on location don’t automatically come on anymore like they did in 16.3.1. I deleted the automation and added it back so hopefully it will work next time I arrive at work.

I’m so happy with the options for turning AOD off when charging. I always charge my phone when I shower in the morning (don’t leave it to charge overnight) so I can’t see the display anyways.

After updating, I noted that the screen was rather dim, even with max brightness. I totally dimmed the iPhone, which made the screen essentially fade to black. But after restoring brightness to 100%, things seem to be back to normal. Weird bug.

This is the best update that I’ve ever witnessed for the battery life so far (iPhone 11 user), I hope they don’t ruin it in the next update 🤦🏻‍♂️

Not sure if anyone else has been experiencing this issue, but on my iPhone 14 Pro, starting with the iOS 16.4 update, the volume slider is no longer appearing when viewing any media in landscape mode, and in some apps the volume buttons don’t seem to work. But upon exiting those apps or putting the media back in portrait mode, it works again.

The minute after I updated to iOS 16.4, I went into my photo library to edit a video, to trim the video specifically, and all of a sudden there were major bugs present. Everything was frozen and I could hear the video playing, but there was no motion on the screen. The whole UI was frozen and not responding to any touch. Then, after about 10 seconds, everything just came back with a lag. I tried to do everything I did again, when everything happened again about three times. I restarted the phone thinking maybe it was a coincidence. I went back to my library and try to edit a video again and again with the freezing. That after a little bit of speculation, I went into the settings and disabled the new dim flashing lights setting and all of the freezing stopped and hasn’t happened since. The video I was editing wasn’t even flashy or bright at all. I think this was just a bug introduced with that setting.

I’m facing problems with the wallpaper rotation, where few of the wallpaper are appearing in their original colour while others are in black and white filters

So far, so good. Telemach Croatia finally gets 5G. Much faster animations and overall improvement for iPhone 12 Mini, almost like a new device, at least 40-50% faster than on iOS 16.3. Don’t know what they’ve done, but they’ve done it 10/10. Like they upscaled it from 60hz to 90hz. 😂😂

The option to install developer betas showed up on my iPad and iPhone after upgrading from 16.3.1 even though I don’t have a paid developer account. I have logged into the developer website before, but I haven’t paid the annual fee. It seems like you don’t need to be a paid developer to get beta updates which doesn’t seem like what Apple intended.

I noticed that they added "Maximise Compatibility" in mobile hotspot settings for older iPhone.
When did they added this? Is this a part of 16.4 release?

Hi Aaron, thanks so much for the detailed update, however I’ve noticed that when you go to coverage option I can only pickup a device that I’m using not all of my Apple devices. Is this because of my region or something else. Much love from South Africa

I have noticed a storage bug, where the storage I have left in the iPhone storage menu shows something else while the storage space left in the About section in general shows a different value. For example, in iPhone storage I can see that I have 135 gb left while in about it shows 95 gb. Hope they fix this soon

iOS 16.4 is so much more smoother than previous iOS builds on my iPhone 13, its like butter now, happy apple acknowledged the bad stuff and fixed it with this update!

The most amazing feature of iOS 16.4 for me is support for Punjabi language transliteration. Now typing Punjabi on iPhone is as easy as 1-2-3. That’s why I love, Apple. Powerful hardware and fantastic software. Thanks a lot Apple from the Punjabi community

Hi Aaron. I downloaded it yesterday and this morning I got some weird stuff! In night time it downloaded a bunch of old apps that I didn’t use and removed a long time ago. Also, there was few updates that where halfway. I stop the update process for each app to realize that they where updated and worked perfectly. I’m in Canada, I don’t know if you got the same problem in the US?

I just installed iOS 16.4 onto my iPhone 14Pro Max and I am experiencing two glitches. Both related to my Apple Watch Ultra. Using the watch app on my iPhone, going into face colors I do not see the 2023 spring colors. I restarted the phone, but the Spring colors still do not show up. As for my Apple Watch face, in building my Wayfinder face, I’ve selected the latitude/longitude bezel, but cannot get it to apply to the watch face. This problem existed before the 16.4 update. Thanks for doing these very helpful videos.

@zollotech I wonder when the feature to be able to schedule a text will come to iMessage? I know shortcuts has an option but I would rather have it included in iMessage itself. I have Verizon service and you can use there messages app to do it but then you have to leave it on in the background.. Any News on when and if this is coming?

iPhone SE 1st gen got the iOS 15.7.3 update! Not sure when it received it but it is great to see apple still support those devices!

I’ve been using it since Monday on my iPhone 14 Pro Max and for me it is the best version so far!

Xfinity Mobile (my carrier) has it depending on your device. My iPad Pro M1 with cellular has it, and my iPhone 13 mini has it to. For some reason, my brother’s iPhone XS Max doesn’t have it. Both devices are on iOS 16.4 and the iPad Pro is updated to iPadOS 16.4.

When there’s a new iOS update, I come here 👍👍

After updating to iOS 16.4 i’m getting SMS messages in a new conversation (chat) instead of being delivered on the original old conversations.
It’s like I’m receiving a message from that person or company for the first time on my iPhone.

Here is my situation with 11 pro.
My phone was making throughout the day with one time charging on 16.3.0 version software “with %81 battery health. As soon as updated to 16.3.1, battery cant last even 6 hours during the day. I had to charge it 3 times a day and it charges the way slower than 16.3.0 version. A week ago I got my battery replaced with apple store and it didnt make any difference. It acts the same as old battery does. Hope with this new update they improved battery health. As a results, Photo quality, sound quality, internet speed and so forth all related to software and Apple wants you to upgrade your phone every three years otherwise you wont have the same use experience with only changing your phone’s battery

Just noticed my battery work well after updating 16.4 😊

As someone known to be a notoriously slow reader, when using my News app I use the Speak feature. I double-tap over a word, and get a menu that includes "Select All". I tap Select All and though all the text gets selected, I don't get a menu for further actions. I wind up having to gently swipe my finger across the blue stem at the edge of the selected text in order to get the next menu.
Unless I'm doing something wrong I don't understand why a subsequent menu fails to appear after my Select All choice. If this is indeed the current design, how would one petition for a design upgrade?

Dialog service provider have provide 5G trial to iphone from today too

After updating, I notice a bug. In my settings (Settings - General - About), is showing the incorrect available storage on both my iPhone and iPad.
When I go to (Settings - General - iPhone/iPad storage), it shows the correct available storage.
I hope that Apple could fix the available storage under the About setting with the next software update.
