Candyman - Official Trailer 2

    In Theaters August 27
    Don’t say his name.
Oscar® winner Jordan Peele unleashes a fresh take on the blood-chilling urban legend that your friend’s older sibling probably told you about at a sleepover: Candyman. Rising filmmaker Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) directs this contemporary incarnation of the cult classic.
For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II; HBO’s Watchmen, Us) and his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris; If Beale Street Could Talk, The Photograph), move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials.
With Anthony’s painting career on the brink of stalling, a chance encounter with a Cabrini Green old-timer (Colman Domingo; HBO’s Euphoria, Assassination Nation) exposes Anthony to the tragically horrific nature of the true story behind Candyman. Anxious to maintain his status in the Chicago art world, Anthony begins to explore these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, unknowingly opening a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifying wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny.
Universal Pictures presents, from Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures and Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld’s Monkeypaw Productions, in association with BRON Creative, Candyman. Candyman is directed by DaCosta, and is produced by Ian Cooper (Us), Rosenfeld and Peele. The screenplay is by Peele & Rosenfeld and DaCosta. The film is based on the 1992 film Candyman, written by Bernard Rose, and the short story “The Forbidden” by Clive Barker. The film’s executive producers are David Kern, Aaron L. Gilbert and Jason Cloth.

I like how he says “Candyman ain’t a he, he’s the whole hive” implying that there isn’t one Candyman. Obviously it’s talking about how the Candyman chooses a new victim to fill his role to keep the legend going.

@Jake Lemons You got one thing right those who own Hollywood...the Jesuits/ Masonic cabal are satanists and put out a lot of demonic references because of their belief system. They are about absolute control and power. They infiltrated the churches a long time ago so believing that Christ ( who is really the SUN not the SON ) will save you if one just beLIEves( repents, confesses, etc. ) is just what they want and shows they have manipulated you through the church and unfortunately they have a lot of Black people( and White and Hispanic ) on the Jesus as the Savior mind control.

The idea behind candyman is that he represents the anger and pain felt by all black people at the hands of white people. Candyman represents the vengeance, justice the world needs and thats why he only kills white people. This reimagining of candyman is a work of art and cathartic for all poc who suffer under the continuing white supremacy and systemic injustice

so here we go, i did some research in case others cant be bothered, the original film is based on a short story written by clive barker in 1985 called the forbidden, which originally was a take on the british class sytems in liverpool, in 1990 bernard rose (the director of the original candyman) got the rights off barker and repurposed the film to be situated in the projects in chicago and focus on themes of race and social class within the united states, although the original candyman from the novel was described as having jaundice pale skin, and long blonde hair, his race, origin and background are never really mentioned, so it seems like the original 1992 film took some liberties and actually made it better than the book according to general consensus

@Genesis Ansbro He was never originally a bad guy though, at least not until he was brutally beaten and murdered and came back as a vengeful spirit, all of which was race related. The original was a brilliant horror flick, still my favorite of all time, lol scared me like no other movie when I saw it as a kid.

But it was what was playing as the credits were rolling that caught my 👀...in the beginning of the movie there were little stick shadow puppets,so as credits rolled the little paper shadow puppets were back,I immediately noticed the Emmett Till story, and a story about a little boy who was sent to death by electric chair, which made me wanna know the story,so I looked it up and I j wanna say thanks for the shadow puppets and RIP George Stinney🕊️

That's kind of the point of the original and this film though.
You're not supposed to go into the mirror and say his name fives times, because you want to see if the legend is real.
You're supposed to acknowledge that terrible things have happened to these people and that they're still happening, thus keeping your mouth shut and not going to that mirror

(If you haven’t seen this movie DONT READ THIS )This movie is going to go over so many peoples heads . This movie was deep and it was good ass hell ! The man who played candy man in this movie was the baby who got took from the original movie . He turned into candy man in this movie because he was already scarified and did the ritual to become candy man in the next generation . All the candy mans died horrifically from racist or the cops and they were innocent. The originally candy man got killed because he was giving out candy come to find out it was razors in the candy that killed a white little girl . After the white girl Got killed and that candy man got killed who gave out the candy who they accused of killing the white gurl . It was still candy being passed around that razors where in it . He was innocent. The candy man that was before the originally one he did paintings for rich white people he ended up falling in love with a white woman who was married and became pregnant the white womans father ended up hunting him down killing him .In this movie the cops killed candy man and told the wife to say that he was being aggressive towards them and trying to harm her which he wasn’t towards the end of the movie . The wife called candy man in the cop car candy man walked passed the cop car after killing all the cops and in his reflection showed every candy man who got killed off of racism, police brutality or hateful white people . You can’t tell me this movie wasn’t 🔥 Jordan Peele is dangerous when it comes to producing

That piano piece has always been one of the most haunting movie horror themes ever. Awesome to hear it and Tony Todd again.
I *do* wish though they’d at least have made mention of how it originated from Clive Barker. I know the sequels drifted from that and all, and maybe they feel like this is no longer that same thing, but Barker was one of the only guys even writing about prominent black, gay and other minority characters when I first read him as a kid in the late 80’s/early 90’s. He might be a gay white Brit living in Hollywood but the dude helped bring some great iconic characters to the screen and Candyman definitely wouldn’t have existed without him.

A lot of people seem to be confused. Candyman is similar to Freddy where they need people to believe in them. In the first film Helen was doing a thesis on urban legends. The thing about Urban Legends is they change constantly but keeping the similar focus. So maybe the story of the guy told was an urban legend. Also remember in the first film Helen did find a bunch of razor blades in candy that was never explained.
In this film I think that’s what Anthony is also going to be is trying to find the true story. Some of you seem displeased with the police aspect and race commentary when in reality. Candyman has always had commentary on race and poverty.
In the first film when they catch the fake Candyman Helen says “they’ve been looking for this guy for a while but one white woman gets hurt and they shut the entire building down to find him”. In the 2nd film the cop was majorly incompetent. In the 3rd film there was a super racist and predatory cop so this is nothing new.

@Owen The origin for Daniel Robitallie (the OG Candyman) wasn't changed, since the trailer shows his origin is still in the film. The origin of the candy factory worker is a different Candyman, meaning the hive format where any victims of racist violence or all of the victims at once could be Candyman. And since it shows 2 fictional cases (Daniel Robitallie and Sherman Fields, the candy factory worker) and 2 real life cases, it only shows that the legend aspect was only examined further.

    • joeguy1092
      joeguy1092 Year ago

@With my Mind And My Imagination idk because this one is supposed to be a direct sequel to the original. They’ll probably retcon the original ending. Here are my thoughts though. Candyman failed successfully at Helen becoming a part of his “legend” because they didn’t die together but she did come back for revenge of the person who wronged her “Trevor” idt Helen will become the same kind of killer Daniel was (candyman). You have to remember in the film the people of the projects burning him alive and killing him is them taking back their power and community from honestly what they thought was just a guy killing people and kidnapping babies. The day he died was the day the urban legend died. In this new one Anthony(the baby from the first one now grown) is stirring up trouble trying by researching the legend. You know people say “happiness is contagious, or someone has a contagious smile”. Fear is the same way. Fear can spread easily I believe Anthony is gonna spread the word of candyman and those who doubt his existence will day because Anthony being a “busy bee” will spread the word to the entire hive.

@joeguy1092 But what about Helen? In the oringal movie (spoilers)
She becomes the new candyman but her version as she kills her ex husband when he summons her the same way candyman is said to be summoned. She even has his hook. I'm all for a new candyman movie and this one looks great but are is this movie going to pretend the ending of the oringal didnt happen?

It’s weird how before we didn’t really know the origin of candyman just knew that he was and he was a bad guy, based off of the origins. Now he was a good guy coming out of the wall with a hook in his hand just trying to innocently give a child a piece of candy and the real monster was the white police. The child’s scream was what doomed the candy man. He was then brutally murdered by the police.

@tyree556 Interesting point tyree556. But being from a minority background myself and experiencing some very difficult times I feel such films just drags us back again and again stirring up more hatred. Racism is racism and will be so forever. Todays society is blinkered, so I will defend any race, people just feel sorry for themselves all the bloody time, and I'm bored with it all. Grow up humanity.

    • tyree556
      tyree556 6 months ago +3

@Sean Past Trip can’t really provoke something that’s happening in real time. Was it a little on the nose? Some can argue maybe, especially the way he was killed by the cops. The film itself sheds light to what people such as myself can go through, especially those that live in poor communities

@joshy the hand They didn't changed, they added. The movie is implying that there is not only one Candyman, there are several, just like Helen in the first one. In the original one you had the 1800s tale, but in this one, the known story about Candyman is a more recent one that happened in neighbourhood of the one speaking.

@Derrick Redd peace! I appreciate your p.o.v. bud, the film was set up for success: great actors, great premise, etc I just didn't like Jordan messing it all up and making it something it was never meant to be. Horror movies should never be used to push an agenda, they're supposed to entertain. Have a good one

    • Derrick Redd
      Derrick Redd 3 months ago

@Groo Wanderer Bud...you seem like a very in depth critic and I respect that, but unfortunately that's your truth and by all means stand by it, but I'll to stick my opinion/truth. Honestly everytime I watch this new version I find something new, just like the original but regardless this is a subject you and I will never agree on so let's take the higher road and agree to disagree, "Tell everyone"😁. Peace and goodnight

    • Groo Wanderer
      Groo Wanderer 3 months ago

@Derrick Redd all I stated was facts from the film. I just watched it. Maybe you should rewatch it to remind yourself. They didn't hide the agenda. All the things I said was true, bud. It's cool if you like it, that's your opinion. But it doesn't change the plot of the movie. They even said that the reason candyman continues to kill is because of ongoing mistreatment of whites against blacks. I'm not creating a narrative, I'm just telling you what was in the movie.

I was really hoping that bathroom scene would’ve been the opening to set the mood
    The movie feels so short
But they waste no time getting to the nitty gritty of it all
I'm very happy with they expand further with the mythology but also paying respect to the 1992 original
The scares are good, the cinematography is appropriately moody, the haunting score, the blood, and many of the underlying racial themes mixed with the current social commentary work extremely well
Given everything that's happened with the Black Lives Matter movement it's refreshing to have Nia DaCosta and Jordan Peele tackle some social issues with violence, police brutality, gentrification, and unjust killings
People murdered either become heroes or vilified
When it comes to black cinema it's more drama-based with historical figures conveying their messages yet with the horror genre it serves as a conduit for the Black experience and its duality
It can be hopeful and life-changing but also sad and unfair and painful
The monsters in cinema help us see the true terrors of life
Happy they bright back Vanessa Williams and Tony Todd even if it was just the last frame
Overall just as good as the first movie it not better

Helen is not THE Candyman. She becomes part of the legend and is A candyman.

Yes. The baby's name is Anthony. And if you look at the timeline of the films, when they're supposed to be it tracks to this character's age. First film takes place, then 3 years to the beginning of the second movie and then another year when the author writes the book, the third film is 25 years later. Add that up and it is 29. The description says 28 years after the first film. It is said to be a direct sequel to the first film. And it has been common knowledge he has the same name as the baby from the first film and discovers he used to live at Cabrini green before.

@ManiaxLives Problem is that there's a lot about it that can't possibly be true. Sort of how the Amityville horror book had the hood pop up while he was driving, but a Chevy Vega opened from the firewall, not the front bumper.
There was one about a guy slashing people's feet from under a car. When there isnt room under most cars and those that have enough, you'd see them right away.
Then, on occasion, you run into Albert Fish or Ed Gein, the latter spawned 3 horror movies. Psycho (1960 is the only worthwhile one), Texas Chainsaw (too stupid: the country is DARK, if she'd just have shut up, nobody would ever have found her!) And Silence of the Lambs.

    • ScoutTrooper164

The guy giving out candy (recently revealed to be named 'Sherman Fields') is listed as one of many victims of racist violence, hence making him among the legend of Candyman since the urban legend constantly changes overtime. Sherman is just one of many Candyman, alongside Daniel Robitallie (the OG) and thus haunts the movie as well.
