Well done Germany. We all know this hasn't been an easy choice for you to make, but when it comes down to what's right or wrong, it becomes easier to accept. The rest of Europe and the UK are 100% with you.

Regarding these Leopards, then it was not originally a German idea to donate them to Ukraine. Denmark already have the recently received (the last to be delivered from the German factory here in 2023) best of the very best of the latest upgraded Leopard 2A7V, that cannot be donated to Ukraine, because they would then have to be downgraded to 2A6 and stripped of the latest Danish high-tech, if they were to be donated, so instead Denmark pledged to donate all of the 19 brand new self-propelled Caesar howitzers recently purchased from France, though Ukraine had only asked for 6 of them.
However, since then there has been a growing political pressure in the Danish parliament for the government to approve a Danish donation of Leopards, and it so happens that Denmark back in 2010 sold it's 99 older but upgraded Danish surplus Leopard 1A5 tanks to the German company Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft who keep, upgrade and sell older tanks and armored personnel carriers from both the Danish and German military, and they had not yet upgraded and sold the 99 Danish surplus Leopards 1A5, which then were still available. So Zelenskyy and the Danish PM openly talked about this around a week ago when the Danish PM visited Mykolaiv in Ukraine.
The Danish tanks were originally used during the war in the Balkans in 1994 and upgraded up until 2005. The German company said that they will be able to deliver 20 of the 99 Danish Leopards, upgraded and ready in perfect condition for battle within the next few month + 20 more within a further 3 month, with Denmark donating the Leopards while asking Germany and the Netherlands to pay for their battle ready maintenance-upgrade.
Besides the Danish Leopard's, Germany have also approved German arms-maker Rheinmetall’s plans to sell 88 of their older Leopards 1A5, so that they can be donated to Ukraine. How many more Leopards that will be delivered by Poland, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Canada, Spain and so forth, is yet to be disclosed.

@Jumping saucepan .. Russia do not seem to have any operational RS-28 Sarmat's as of yet. They said that they successfully fired a test model back in April last year, but since then noting further seem to have happened, and the head of Roscosmos in charge of their development, Dmitri Rogozin, was then later replaced a few month later. So I suspect that it's not going all too well with the production of operational Sarmat's.

1:07 I've always absolutely loved the look of the AMX, one of the most unique looking tanks ever

    • Nguyen Mai
Nguyen Mai 3 months ago +6

No, those are not AMX-13. Those are SK-105 Kurassier, an Austrian light tank. People usually misidentify the 2 tank types because they look somewhat the same. They share the same turret, but the AMX-13 usually has a 75 mm or 90 mm gun, while the Kurassier has a 105 mm gun. the AMX's turret is a bit farther to the rear of the tank while the Kurassier's is more center-line.

    • Anglosphere Federalist
      Anglosphere Federalist 3 months ago

@Nguyen Mai Their oscillating turret design had many advantages, most notably a very fast autoloader that didn't require the cannon to return to its neutral position after firing. If you observe modern tanks carefully, you'll notice that they have to perform this maneuver every time they fire, which can take a few potentially valuable seconds.

Leopard 2's are 'Logistically' the best tank for Ukrainians. The Abrams and Challenger 2's are great tanks too, but more of a Logistic challenge as they would need overseas Logistic support from US/UK to manufacture and supply spares to Ukraine. With Poland having Logistic support for their Leopard 2's on the 'doorstep' of Ukraine from Germany and no need to go airborne or ship (which can be easily tracked), its 'Logistically' a better option - a Tank made in Europe with Logistic support set up to support all the Operators in Europe, they have everything in place already. Poland could set up a 'Hub' for training and even a repair/spares centre for Ukraine just over the border.
As for Ammo, the sooner they can get Western tanks, the 'better' off they will be with supplies of Soviet era Tank ammunition 'dwindling' and Ukraine are struggling to resupply - its not as if their Allies had a LOT of Soviet tank ammo, but as the Leopard 2 and Abrams share the same 'NATO Standard' barrel, they also share the same Ammo so all the 'stockpiles' of Tank Ammo in Europe/UK/US can be supplied to Ukraine.
Its all well and good having 'Heavy' Armour like Russian Tanks, but if your Ammo stockpile is running low and/or struggling to resupply as Russia isn't [intentionally] resupplying them, they are not very effective anymore...

Likely Leo2's A4's and A6's and Leopards with upgrades will lilely be a good long term MBT's for Ukraine. Marder and CV90's and Bradley's of these IFV we will see which works best. I think AMX 10rc will be good for recon and peace time boader patol. M113's field ambulance, radar, and morter. Striker and MRAPS APC with a 30mm gun added back on. M1A1 Abrims not so likely to stay long term, but we will see how each does.

Those 180 Leopard tanks from Germany are the latest model of the Leopard 1. It is the version A5. Sure, it has "only a 105 mm canon" - the Leopard 2 has 120mm .....but the Leopard 1 A5 has the same stabilizer system as the new Leopard 2 (fire on point while high speed driving). That is the big difference compared to the russian T62 or T72 tanks.

    • Ionor Rea
Ionor Rea  3 months ago +2

Trouble is that Leopard 1 is paper thin even with turret add-on armor, so even T-55 can pierce right through it. A rifled 105mm main gun is great for cheap infantry support when used with spin-stabilized dumb ammunition that is more accurate than dumb 120mm smoothbore fin-stabilized ammunition but as far as tank combat goes, 105 will struggle with most fronts of tanks from mid 80ties and beyond like T-80U, T-90 and perhaps even some up-armored T-72s depending on ammunition provided, so, in fact, you got better chances with infantry carried Javelin than with 105mm gun of Leopard when dealing with enemy tanks. This may not be that much of an issue in hit & run defensive role when camouflaged and well positioned to hit enemy flanks which is what was Leopard 1 build for as it was not well-armored tank even during the introduction and is hardly a frontline main battle tank these days, more like an overweight infantry support light tank/fast (in off-road terms) tank destroyer similar to tracked gun things deployed by the airborne troops.

This is great news! The Leopard 1 is still a good tank, and better than many of the old Russian-made tanks that Ukraine has today (but has still done quite well with, nonetheless).

  • Optimus Prime
Optimus Prime 3 months ago +28

People might think that these are old ass tanks but remember that most of what Russia has as MBT are T72, T64 and T80s (and very few T90s) . Both the T64 and T72 started their production in the 60s and the leopard 1 also began its production in 1965 so their not older than most of Russia's tanks. And all of these tanks (T72, T64, T80 and Leopard 1) are still being used today so they have modern equipment for at least some of them. So while old their quality and age isn't that much different then what both Ukraine and Russia are using now in the war.

    • Jerald Kozey
Jerald Kozey 3 months ago +6

It's pretty clear that Leopard tanks are much better than what russians have, especially when we're talking about the night vision and other technologies that russians just don't have in the required amount. In any case, providing military support for Ukraine drastically improves the chances of ending this war without having a WW3 in Europe.

Canada may not many to spare but delivered them by air. Training should be taking place for Leo'2 A4 and A6's. Now new training can soon start for Leo1's too. As for Challanger2's training is likely happening for first company of them. American traning for Abrims is ongoing and will take awhile to use the first 31. By July I hope we see all in the war. It will take a year to build the MBT Battalions up to full force.

The timeframe for ending the war is dictated by the speed of supplying what Ukraine needs. If the West is serious about wanting it to end this year it should be supplying what Ukraine needs now, not promising deliveries as late as next year. What a great opportunity the war provides to test the very latest generations of tanks and other weaponry on the battlefield instead of the drawing board.

Ukraine will take any Western armor they can get their hands on, though I agree the Leopard 2's in numbers, should be sent. Ukraine seems to have good tactics and done pretty well with their older Soviet tanks, with some having homegrown upgrades. I read somewhere that Ukraine was the heartland of the SU's military engineering and production of arms. Is France kicking in tanks?

The analysis looked at the three periods of excess deaths in England after the vaccine rollout (Figure 2). These are, broadly, the Alpha period of winter 2020-21 (December 20th 2020 to March 7th 2021), the Delta period of the second half of 2021 (June 27th 2021 to January 9th 2022) and the Omicron period of 2022 (March 27th 2022 to January 1st 2023) - though it’s important to keep in mind that for the Delta and Omicron periods many or most of the excess deaths were not Covid related.

Ask them to send F16 aircraft and longer-range precision fires (like ATACMS). Send them an email, text, or old-fashioned letter (best option), call them on the phone, post on social media, etc. Let's do our part to maintain and strengthen the national consensus in our own countries to give more support for Ukraine.

The bad news Pistorius is that Ukraine needs these tanks NOW, not the summer or later this year. With the West it's always a case of too little, too late and too slow. Why are we always limiting what we send Ukraine and expecting them to fight ruZZia with one hand tied behind their back?

@Zhufor TheImpaler Is this your personal opinion?

    • Zhufor TheImpaler
      Zhufor TheImpaler 3 months ago

@Milo Bradtke no that is sadly a fact.
due to CFE Treaty, european nations could not store equipment in large quantities. (CFE required a mandatory reduction in army size and stockpiles by about 60% to pre 1991 levels)
Due to this, almost no european nation as stored Leopard 2´s and almost all are in active service units.
exceptions are spain with about 100 Leopard 2A4 in storage, wich are in scrap metal condition( missing turrets, rusted, unusable without major rebuilds), and finnland with about 84 usable Leopard 2A4 in semi storage, as they are part of the army reserve equipment stockpile, meaning that they are basicly in active use every few weeks during reservist training.
And Switzerland with 385 stored/used ones, but switzerland is doing switzerland things.

It means they will get the tanks even if the war has already ended. They'll need to westernize their military after this anyway, no matter what. Most of their soviet stuff will be destroyed and there's no decent way to get spare parts and ammunition anyway. So this program makes sense in any case.

It has stabilizers (so that it can fire on the move), and IR-thermals. It's better than the t-62s that the Russians have been seen fielding lately, about the same as some older versions of t-72, and worse than some of the top-tier t-70s (but Russias has lost so many of these in the war that they are getting rarer).

    • Witcher Joker
      Witcher Joker 3 months ago

The Leopard 1 is still a vary capable tank and the Russians use older models in large numbers as well. Let's not forget that tanks rarely engage other tanks. 80-90% of the time they shoot at infantry, bunkers, trunks and maybe the occasional IFV. The leopard is more than capable of that and is incredibly mobile and fast. It is also a much lighter tank and can be deployed in areas that don't have the infrastructure to support the weight of any of the more modern western tanks, which are all a lot heavier than the soviet tanks the Ukrainians have been using until now, so their infrastructure is not built around supporting such heavy stuff.
On top of that they said the Leopard 1 will be modernized. There is the possibility of upgrading its gun to the 120 the Leopard 2 is using. There is an upgrade program for that. not sure if they'll do that, but even if not, that tank is superior to several of the older models the Russians are fielding. it was designed to kill those after all. Not everything they're getting needs to be able to take out a T90 in a duel. If anything the higher mobility, speed and lower profile will probably make it harder to be killed by the threats that kill way more tanks in Ukraine than tanks do: Drones and artillery. The Leopard 1 is incredibly fast and mobile and much harder to hit.

    Figure 4
Once again, areas with higher third-dose coverage, far from seeing an improvement in outcomes over the pre-vaccination baseline, see excess deaths increase to the point that the more-boosted areas are slightly worse off than the less-boosted areas, the downward slope now reversed into a slight upward slope.
Worse, the upward slope only gets steeper as we move into 2022 and the Omicron period (Figure 5).

Discover Leopard 1 tank modernization fitted with Belgian John Cockerill 3105 105mm weapon station
      clip-share.net/video/KvbnKq-eLUo/video.html
A combined armed force of Heavy medium and IFV with troops makes a hell of a difference . the germans in ww2 used the heavy tanks as battering ram and the medium tanks in the suport and clean up roles behind the lines . .
Tactics strategy and using them proparly when and where needed is key .
