I'm a valet attendant, and I park over 1,000 cars per month, and this shifter is one of the best ones out there. Let me explain; push forward for reverse and push back for Drive, easy. Other cars have shifters, and u need to focus to make sure u land on the right gear out of P, R, N, D, 1, 2, 3. The shifter for maserati is cheap hard plastic and sounds cheap when u shift it. Volvo doesn't shift to the R or D if u don't keep it pushed long enough. Jaguars and Range Rovers the circular knob pops up and when u in a rush is it is annoying to wait, and then u spin it and half the time land on the wrong one. Benz is behind the steering wheel. Literally porsche is a W, the most easy to use.
@Ramz some of the BMW M cars are different in the way it’s DCT transmission is set up. There is no park. So to get the car into park, you leave it in D and turn off the car. When you pull up the car for valet, you put it in N and then pull the manual brake handle. Every car has its nuances. Hahaha
Ford has a circular shifter where full right for D and full left for P, with a button in the middle for S/L (depending on the car) Though what most if not all electronic shifters do is put itself in park if the door is opened or the car is turned off. Not sure if all do, but might be useful knowledge
@Ramz BMW is counterintuitive. most common BMW shifter has P button at the top of the shifter or random other places, and most people that drive one for the first time believe that they can shift it up to P. Instead, they put it in Reverse. M6 and M5 doesn't have a park button(u have to turn off the engine, and it puts itself in the park). 7 series e65 has the shifter on the steering wheel like a Mercedes but is very hidden... i give it 5/10. But the most annoying thing about them isn't the different shifters, but rather when u put the car in park and let go of the brake it jerks forward and when u open the door doesn't unlock the other doors or the trunk and the unluck buttons are usually hidden.
They don't actually make the 911 with a manual, anymore. You're stuck with the dual-clutch transmission. Not until you get up to the GT3 trim, anyways.
Yeah, anything below the GT3 is a quick-ish grand tourer at best, and those are the cars Porsche has to sell to have money to make the above mentioned GT3s
@Happy Aardvark No. It has been proven years ago, that a car being out of gear for the lowest amount of time also helps keeping laptimes lower. DCT is the way for hunting time. Manual for fun.
Dude, for real. This is just a little ridiculous. I thought he was going to complain about the ignition being on the left side without even knowing the reason behind it…. But his “complaint” about the small gear selector made me mad enough to write this stupid comment. 🤦🏼♂️
If you still haven't figured it out, it is a backwards VW with DSG gearbox. This is a common VW shifter. Not a bad thing to have, but certainly not the prettiest.
@Joseph. Technically they usually are better, but if you're performance driving, being able to shift gears at will can be very useful. It also just feels good ngl
As a professional automotive window tinter and also a car enthusiast, let me just say in my opinion there is absolutely nothing wrong with this shifter. It doesn't get in the way, it does not feel cheap it feels very solid and the way that it feels when you select a gear is very crisp. If you want to shift the gears yourself just use the paddle shifters. I have yet to see the problem with this shifter I think you're outnumbered here bro 😂
@Guerrero Azul that I am not sure. Regardless if I am dropping a $150K+ on a Porsche 911, a few $K to replace a water pump will not make a dent. Owning expensive item cost money. House, watches, boats, planes, you name it.
@JML When people with no money buy high end cars, they tend to bitch about the cost to upkeep them. They could just....not buy a car they cannot afford? But instead they choose to complain about the cost to work on them when they had no business owning them in the first place.
@J P right-which can still be done on this new style selector.. so i don’t see what the problem is. Those who would wanna shift gears with the previous style PRND/S selector would’ve just bough the manual, and those who bought the PDK and wanna shift manually will use the paddles.
@Tristan R The only time the central selector is good for changing gear is when the steering wheel is over 180 degrees turned and it can be confusing to press the correct paddle quickly.
The key to start a Porsche is at the left because of the “Le mans” race start. To start the car at Le Mans there is 40 years, the pilots had to run to there car and start them quickly, the pilot enter the car and at the same time they start it👍🏻 In tribute to this departure, Porsche let the start key at the left Sorry for the mistake I’m French👍🏻
As someone who drives one of these pretty regularly, this shifter is wayy overhated. It’s very intuitive, easy to control, and works the way a gear shifter should. It DOESN’T get in the way of the AC switches behind it-like what most people claim-because of its geometry and size
I actually like it. Was a detailer for Porsche when these first came out and they reminded me of the switches and tech from the Star Wars podracers lmao, which may not actually be far off considering the new Taycan was heavily inspired by Star Wars design language, and that's verifiable by Disney and Porsche themselves!
It's not that bad really. I think it's small so that it takes less space and doesn't obscure the buttons around it. What's odd is the one in GT3, where the auto shifter looks deceptively like a manual shifter.
@Jonimus Prime its all in our mindset. If a button click is sufficient and convenient for a gear shift, so be it. What's wrong? This may appeal to some people like me who like minimal, simplicity, to-the-point and don't bother about how it looks to others while I drive.

The chicken nugget shifter is similar to other cars in the VW group. It’s the attempt by management to cut costs. The engine covers follow a similar strategy.
Its actually very nice. You are only choosing a direction of travel and the paddle shifters are used if you want to manually shift it. Its a quality shifter
@Bongwater Bojack In my opinion, buttons aren't as cool and if you have to shift between D and R a lot, a shifter is much better than buttons. You also don't need to look which button you need to press.
@Sebbiif you need to Park you're not going that fast that you don't find it you have a lever in the gt3 Modells but one gear less in both options comparred to the normal 911 and for most variants a manual Stifter can be ordered

I've worked long enough as an automotive technician to be able to say that a number of these cars are going to end up in dealership service departments with those tiny shifter knobs broken off.
EW. A dial knob is SO disgusting! You should feel like you are interacting directly with the shift cable and you are in the older cars. Doesn’t make me feel good when you have a dial that is connected to a bunch of other electronic components that EVENTUALLY leads to your shift cable.
This isn't that bad really. The 911s were built to be comfortable, practical and reliable sports cars. You'll find the regular shifter on the GT cars like the GT3, GT3 RS and presumably the next GT2RS.
At first I hated it. But honestly, it's awesome, it's out of the way and it allows you to focus on driving. Especially if you're racing in full gear, it's so easy to use
Same thing with the mk 8 Golf. People be complaining all the time but they are very nice to use and fit the interior very good. And its not like you would use it a lot anyway. You literally only need to put it into D.
That shifter is actually very convenient and nice. Small, ease of use, and simplistic design. It all goes well and makes sense for most cars. Also, this whole comments sections is just full of manual elitists. I honestly wish the car community was more fun than this. A real car is a car. Fun is subjective, and you only have fun with what you personally enjoy. For some people, that's manual, for others, it's auto.
I have a car with an electronic knob shifter and let me tell you that it's very frustrating waiting for the system to get into the gear I want. Behind the wheel shifters are OK but it feels like it's too little effort. This is a GT car it's supposed to be easy to drive. I can't imagine an easier and quicker shifter than this.
I'm a valet attendant, and I park over 1,000 cars per month, and this shifter is one of the best ones out there. Let me explain; push forward for reverse and push back for Drive, easy. Also a valet driver and all of your points are spot on!!
What about BMW
@Ramz some of the BMW M cars are different in the way it’s DCT transmission is set up. There is no park. So to get the car into park, you leave it in D and turn off the car. When you pull up the car for valet, you put it in N and then pull the manual brake handle. Every car has its nuances. Hahaha

I've never complained about the shifter lever in an automatic transmission car.
Because there is a second drive mod, semi-sequential👍🏻
@Sleeping_V6_3.5 paddles do that on new cars
@Sleeping_V6_3.5 paddles?
@Isaac Urra paddle shifters
I cant lie the shifters in these new car are some tiny nobs... even manual they have some shifters on the side of the steering wheel like come on...
It works. Feels solid and its tactile. No one is using the shifter to shift a PDK, cmon now.
You use the paddles to shift. If you want to look like your car has a manual gearbox, get one with a manual gearbox.
They don't actually make the 911 with a manual, anymore. You're stuck with the dual-clutch transmission. Not until you get up to the GT3 trim, anyways.
@Stray that’s a damn shame :(
@Stray lol, you can get a Carrera T, S or GTS with a manual.
@Stray Bro what are you smoking
"And this is where I park my prized manual transmission sports car! IF THEY STILL MADE THEM!!!"
bro this is one of the best shifters out there. Porsche is just quality
Why not have a manual gearbox
still looks funny
dumb or trolling?
it looks nice. If you want a normal looking shifter then get the manual
Which btw. always feels amazing in a porsche.
The hard-core sportscar is the GT3, those have regular looking shifters!
GTS is still a pretty hardcore sports car tho. It’s meant to sit between the 4s and GT3 in the 911 lineup
they should all just be manual lol
Yeah, anything below the GT3 is a quick-ish grand tourer at best, and those are the cars Porsche has to sell to have money to make the above mentioned GT3s
@Disinterested Simp Mod it’s more like the middle of s and turbo
@Happy Aardvark No. It has been proven years ago, that a car being out of gear for the lowest amount of time also helps keeping laptimes lower. DCT is the way for hunting time. Manual for fun.
This is one of the best shifters ever made, no idea how someone could hate about that!
Imagine being this guy’s friend and have to take a shot every time he says ‘now’.
some people desperately need something to complain about.
Dude, for real. This is just a little ridiculous. I thought he was going to complain about the ignition being on the left side without even knowing the reason behind it…. But his “complaint” about the small gear selector made me mad enough to write this stupid comment. 🤦🏼♂️
Talking like someone that's only about status 🤏
If you still haven't figured it out, it is a backwards VW with DSG gearbox. This is a common VW shifter. Not a bad thing to have, but certainly not the prettiest.
I think it's fine. If you want a "hard-core sports car" shifter then get a manual.
this is a dual-mode car iirc. there's paddles on the wheel if you want manual, but most automatics are better than any manual could ever be.
@Joseph. Technically they usually are better, but if you're performance driving, being able to shift gears at will can be very useful. It also just feels good ngl
🦧💬
Does Porsche make manuals with new models?
@SubZero I would assume they have to.
As a professional automotive window tinter and also a car enthusiast, let me just say in my opinion there is absolutely nothing wrong with this shifter. It doesn't get in the way, it does not feel cheap it feels very solid and the way that it feels when you select a gear is very crisp. The insecurity is off the charts
We must protect the nugget at all costs
😂👍
stand back, i'm arming the nugget!
Biggest tragedy associated with 911
I’m so happy to see everyone tell this guy how wrong he is. 😂😂
There’s a really simple solution to this: GET THE MANUAL.
they dont make this model as a manual
Use the paddles. Very simple.
The new ones don't come with manual so how do you do that???
@Mász Kálmán Then you don't buy it at all. A $100,000 and it doesn't have a manual transmission? A WASTE.
@shutup shutup Exactly :D
Hard-core sports car would have a manual transmission.
I like it. Looks simple and to the point.
Bingo
So is a stick. And much more satisfying to use.
It looks quite breakable though if it's only plastic.
My guy has never come across German engineering before. Masterpiece
What about all the plastic components? Are those masterpieces too?
Porsche has always been straightforward German to the point design. If you are not into that, get yourself an Italian.
@JML that being said Is it true that you need to drop the entire engine to change the water pump on the porsche?
@Guerrero Azul that I am not sure. Regardless if I am dropping a $150K+ on a Porsche 911, a few $K to replace a water pump will not make a dent. Owning expensive item cost money. House, watches, boats, planes, you name it.
@JML When people with no money buy high end cars, they tend to bitch about the cost to upkeep them. They could just....not buy a car they cannot afford? But instead they choose to complain about the cost to work on them when they had no business owning them in the first place.
When you want to turn on ur lights and accidentally turn off the engine 😂
That's why you should take advantage of the fact that Porsche is one of the very few brands who still offer manuals for their sports cars!
well it has paddles for a reason.. nobody uses the drive selector to shift a PDK 911
I mean, you can’t actually move the car without at least telling it the direction you want to go. D or R then it’s paddles until you want to park.
@J P right-which can still be done on this new style selector.. so i don’t see what the problem is. Those who would wanna shift gears with the previous style PRND/S selector would’ve just bough the manual, and those who bought the PDK and wanna shift manually will use the paddles.
exactly and It actually feels easier and quicker just push or pull.
@Tristan R The only time the central selector is good for changing gear is when the steering wheel is over 180 degrees turned and it can be confusing to press the correct paddle quickly.
well in my 8speed supra I always use it to shift from 1st to 2nd when I'm making a right turn from a stop. then paddles for the remaing gears
It's called PDK. Best system available.
The key to start a Porsche is at the left because of the “Le mans” race start. To start the car at Le Mans there is 40 years, the pilots had to run to there car and start them quickly, the pilot enter the car and at the same time they start it👍🏻
In tribute to this departure, Porsche let the start key at the left
Sorry for the mistake I’m French👍🏻
Tbh that looks clean and good
Looks like a cheap piece of crap, the nugget shifter at least
I love it, easy to use daily and has Braun vibes-another legendary German company known for their design
к сожалению, в этот раз Олег ничем не отличается от предыдущих гостей Доктора.
As someone who drives one of these pretty regularly, this shifter is wayy overhated. It’s very intuitive, easy to control, and works the way a gear shifter should. It DOESN’T get in the way of the AC switches behind it-like what most people claim-because of its geometry and size

Press M for man up. I love my paddles.
So true, a lot of shifters are so annoying. These just work
@K M until you drive in New York
Agree, an automatic gearbox in a sports car is tragic.
I kinda like Porsche as a hard core sports car, because they are.
I drive these cars in my work, these shifters are very efficient.
When you buy a Porsche, you don't need a Big Knob!
Perfect statement lmao
Insane comment 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You only have to give the impression of a big knob.
Imagine the passenger just scooped that shifter
This is modern functional and reliable, that's why.
This is a modern car, and modern cars are supposed to be like that.
It's not that bad really. I think it's small so that it takes less space and doesn't obscure the buttons around it. What's odd is the one in GT3, where the auto shifter looks deceptively like a manual shifter.
Took the words right out of my mouth hahaha Great comment
the bezel around the buttons take up about the same amount of (besides vertical) space of a shifter
Also Porsche is all about the weight savings
yea honestly. both shifters are a lil odd but Porsche can do no wrong in my book lmao
@Mizaq Enyad agreed!! Hahaha
Mercedes shifters are the best ones… really intuitive
Me in my Dodge Grand caravan silently judging Porsche
What's wrong with these shifters? If this does the job, that's all is needed.
It just doesnt look right on a high end sports car. I just wish that they had an actual gear lever for the PDK
@Jonimus Prime its all in our mindset. If a button click is sufficient and convenient for a gear shift, so be it. What's wrong? This may appeal to some people like me who like minimal, simplicity, to-the-point and don't bother about how it looks to others while I drive.

Best shifter out there. Comes with pdk as well
Its actually very nice. You are only choosing a direction of travel and the paddle shifters are used if you want to manually shift it. Its a quality shifter
So why not just have buttons rather than some odd piece that sticks up?
@Bongwater Bojack In my opinion, buttons aren't as cool and if you have to shift between D and R a lot, a shifter is much better than buttons. You also don't need to look which button you need to press.
@Bongwater Bojack Easier to find a lever than a button, which helps the driver to keep their eyes on the road.
@Sebbiif you need to Park you're not going that fast that you don't find it you have a lever in the gt3 Modells but one gear less in both options comparred to the normal 911 and for most variants a manual Stifter can be ordered
It’s PDK - dual clutch, easiest shifter made, and a tribute to the precision craftsmanship of the German-made Porsche 911!
I have a Lexus ct200h and althought my shifter looks different (more like a shiny ****plug) it works basically the same as this one and I love it. The feeling you can go to R from D in 0,005 seconds without thinking is amazing. I believe it’s the same in many other Toyotas from that age.
Best shifter on the market. Better than dodges attempt😂
That’s one of those “apples and oranges” things, except with really f-ing pricey apples.
Like it, don’t like it, buy it, don’t buy it. Porsche couldn’t care less.
Nothing beats a 964
No car will ever be a “hardcore sports car” if it does not have a third pedal. Extreme and I meant extreme time attack track cars are the only exceptions. Not your bone stock daily 911
Facts on top of fax 📠
Wrong
@Arthur Morgan Care to elaborate…?
Hardcore sport car doesn’t have to have a manual gearbox despite what manual elitists think. No matter how good a driver is, doppelkupplungsgetriebe will destroy all of them on race track.
@Yue Liang Your missing the point of a hardcore sports car. It about the drivers experience. Autos will never offer the same experience and engagement of a manual. That’s why only cars built specifically for lap times and lap times only should be autos
This looks and works (from a driver POV) the same as a Toyota hybrid shifter did in previous generations. While I don’t see why it is a good idea in a hardcore sports car like this, it is really the best automatic shifter ever.
You will love that shifter after you get accustomed to it.
Looks fine for me. Simple, easy to reach and easy to handle. That's what's important. 👌
It looks and feels awesome...what is your achievement, sir!?
This was not yours
Happened to me that I wanted to turn up the aircon fan speed without looking and I shifted into neutral because the aircon is right behind it and works similiar. Still my dream car.
Its significantly better than having buttons for it. Its simple as can be and doesn't look out of place. If you really want sports car shifting, get the manual.
Cut it out with a saw and install the correct gateted shifter and tranny
Calling an automatic car a sports car should be punished by law
Love the shifter in my 992. Simple and easy to use. Granted it looks a little odd, but it works…Germany.
When you have nothing to complain about a car but try find something anyway.
Prius gear is the best and simple. Not too much over engineering.
A "hard-core" sports car would focus on making it as easy as possible to start driving, aka this car.
No it wouldn’t a grocery getter would be focus on that. A hardcore sports car would focus on giving the driver as much raw control as possible over the machine
@Mooseboy240 I don't see F1 cars running center sticks, I see them with paddle shifters. And guess what this porsche has? Paddle shifters.
@Richard M. Nixon sports cars not super cars and a new porsche is a shell of its former self
The 911 was never meant to be “Hardcore.”
People really bash simple things like this but don’t understand because they don’t own one, it’s made that way because it’s easier for the passenger to give head obviously.
You were cucked the moment you decided you would accept an automatic.
Some people prefer speed over “feeling the car” like an old man
@IbpmatthewMost older people could care less about manual cars lol They value comfort.
Because the PDK can change up or down quicker than a human can?
Thank you!😉
Its better than those giant handles that most car manufacturers put in cars for no reason at all.
Wait until he finds out they switched to fuel injection and added a radiator to the Classic 911….
I quite adore it now. Design element surrounds itself well within the overall aesthetics
The 2023 Porsche 911 with automatic clitoris shifter....
I've worked long enough as an automotive technician to be able to say that a number of these cars are going to end up in dealership service departments with those tiny shifter knobs broken off.
I actually enjoy using that shifter more than others
And sounds like it's made from recycled toothpaste caps
Real sports cars use manual transmission, where you decide how and when to shift. Even if you're American
The paddles are the shifters of a modern-day “hard-core” sports car
It’s simple , I like it
That's Porsche's way to say that automatic cars are crap.
“Thiiiiiiissss….is my best Doug impression.”
I hope I don’t turn off my car trying to turn on the headlights 😂
Give it a manual gearbox instead problem solved
It’s so nice to see a dashboard with proper gauges instead of stupid tablet screens everywhere full of smudged fingerprints and grease.
I think it’s the best shifter in the industry, so classy and simple, love how it matches the other buttons that also look like a razor
My old Porsche had a clutch, and 1st gear was down and to the left, below Reverse. I miss the days of simplicity.
Aside from the gears where you push the buttons like Acura, this is literally the most simple thing
Left side ignition is for when they used to race, they had to start the race from outside the car. Then run up to it, enter the vehicle, and start
I like it better than a dial/knob everyone is using these days.
EW. A dial knob is SO disgusting! You should feel like you are interacting directly with the shift cable and you are in the older cars.
Doesn’t make me feel good when you have a dial that is connected to a bunch of other electronic components that EVENTUALLY leads to your shift cable.
They assumed the owner knew how to handle a shifter so tiny
The only problem here is that Americans drive automatics. A real driver who drives a sports car drives a manual.

‘This is supposed to be a hardcore sportscar’, so, where’s the clutch?
The two clutches are part of the gearbox, and are controlled by the car, because there are Americans.
@RSA Jay Porsche is German
There's technically two of them
@Richard M. Nixon he's basically saying automatics like this exist thanks to Americans refusing to drive manuals
It’s not always about size it’s about how you use it 😓
They got tired of investment bankers buying Porsches not knowing how to drive a stick
Well they should stop selling them cars all together because they struggle driving the autos and make everyone look bad.
That shifter is absolutely AMAZING 😍 best shifter by far
Imagine buying an automatic "sports" car
It’s ok for ladies…..
It's a luxury sports car, and it's DCT. Some people prefer the comfort and speed over the direct engagement
And functionally faster than a traditional clutch.
@Chase there are better cars out there optimized for comfort and speed
@Beeb I agree. Doesn't change the fact that it's a grand tourer though
"Son, this ain't no sports car! See that little doohickey right there. . . it doesn't work like a real gear shifter."
Looks like an electric razor. 😅
I like it it’s different which makes Porsche unique I see no problems with it IMO
Agreed
„unique“ bro its literally every vw shifter
I like cars where you mechanically put it in drive by pulling the shift knob much better.
You are just not used to it... there's nothing wrong with that... That's what you call, "uniqueness". No biggy.
It certainly looks ridiculous, but thats a great shifter. Fast, simple, easy to use.
That's why you get a manual if they offer it!!!!!
