Inside Poland's military expansion in response to Putin's Russia

  • Published on Mar 28, 2023 veröffentlicht
  • Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Poland has been investing billions in new tanks, weaponry, cyber operations and manpower. By 2035 Poland hopes to double the size of its armed forces to 300,000 troops. There is even talk of the country becoming a major military power in Europe.
Watch The Telegraph's Steven Edginton interview key members of the Polish military and politicians to understand why they are rearming. He also asked young Poles whether they are prepared to die for their country.
For Poland, investing in the military is no longer a luxury but a necessity. With conflict at their border (don’t forget that two Poles have already been casualties of this war, killed by a stray Ukrainian missile) Poland can no longer rely only on the United States and its Nato allies for protection.
Warsaw plans to increase military spending to 5% of its GDP, outspending its fellow European capitals relatively by a wide margin.
Poland’s military expansion must be thought of within the context of the nation’s history. You don’t have to be a pensioner to remember a time when Poland was suffering under Communist rule. Monuments to the Soviet oppressors litter cities like Warsaw, where one can wonder at Stalin’s “gift” to the Poles, the grand Palace of Culture, and despite the government’s best efforts to tear them down many statues still stand commemorating the Red Army as “liberators”.

i got run over by a car in poland in 2009 and polish medics saved my life and i literally have polish blood in me from the transfusions that were necessary. I will never foget the kindness that the staff and over patients showed me including one patient that had his girlfriend bring in his old phone so that i could speak to my mum as mine was smashed in the accident.
I will always have a soft spot for this country and its people and want to see it safe from aggressors

Love from Czechia brothers, we have come to a conclusion that we are stronger together, it warms my heart to see Czechia, Poland and Slovakia working closer, upgrading and expanding our militaries, we were one of the first to be hit big time by the millions of our fellow Ukrainians running from Russia and at least from what I know, we are feeling responsible to be strong enough to support anyone that happens to. We are the first line of defense, the gates to central Europe and we never, will never bow down to a dictator, our nations exist for thousands of years and will continue to

I was lucky enough to make friends with many Poles when they came to Scotland in the early 00's... I even attended a wedding near Katowice in 2016 and was blown away how beautiful the country was, and the people. (I think wearing a kilt to the wedding brought a lot of friendly Poles towards me).
Really enjoyed my short week there.
I will never forget the many Poles that fought and died for the UK after seeing their own country destroyed in WW2. I would happily do the same for Poland if it ever came to that.

Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, the Baltic countries and ultimately the people of Belarus...and the other "wise" countries of east-central Europe, need to seriously consider the "Three Seas Initiative," (or some reasonable facsimile thereof.) Born and bred in the USA...without equivocation, it's painfully obvious that neither western Europe, nor eastern Europe (Russia), respects your region economically, politically, socially and in the case of Russia, militarily. Please, for the sake of unity and "safety" (cultural, economic, military, political, social and religious), seriously consider an alliance among your countries!!!

actually that's what's happening. Polish armaments factories have contracts for years ahead, together with the Koreans, thanks to the transfer of technology, new companies will be created. aviation companies are also opening new factories soon, apparently the Ukrainians also want to open their factories, etc. etc. ... something is happening there ;)

Incredibly interesting- and yes a common enemy can help to concentrate and allow for a change in doctrine. But we have a video at my company that shows Warsaw after the ‘win’ in 1945 - its horrific to see a desolation that is only comparable to the impact on Japan of nuclear weapons. I can fully understand their zeal to prevent anything like that again! I also find patriotism an interesting subject - I am very patriotic for my country (UK) yet for so long it seemed that was almost a dirty word - but it is surely what is needed when the enemy is at the gate?

Proszę mi wierzyć to jedyna droga do szczęśliwego społeczeństwa, dopóki będziemy (bezpodstawnie) nienawidzić własnego pochodzenia dopóty w Polsce będzie źle.

As a Pole, I would like to say that Poland is not offensive-minded, but having had a very hard experience in history-especially in the 20th century-we know how to behave if anyone decides to infringe our land. I would also like to say right away that I do not consider Russia an enemy, but a dangerous neighbor that has always had and remains with its imperial ambitions. Another thing is that I am really outraged by the actions of the European Union; while Poland has given shelter to many millions of Ukrainian refugees, allocated huge resources for humanitarian, economic and military aid to Ukraine, when just across our eastern border the largest war since World War II is being fought, the European Union is blocking funds that Poland is entitled to and imposing financial sanctions - a situation truly unprecedented in the world, but it has been known for a long time that the European Union is ruled by Germany and France, and especially the former do not care about Poland being a strong country, they care about cheap oil and gas and a market for German technology - and this is the role they foresee for Russia, which is why they are so reluctant to support Ukraine.
