I bought a Fold 4 recently. I'm a welder, and I'm terrified about metal dust getting in the phone hinges and soft inner screen. I put it in a sandwich bag and put it in my toolbox. Seeing how well it does in the dust test here, lowers some of my fears about it though. It is still a bit worrisome to take it out of the bag and see there is still grinder dust on the magnetic spots though.

    • Hondaguy91

I'm not a welder but I work in a shop. If I bought a fold I would destroy it for sure in this environment.

Love the video Jerry, if you ever did a follow up it would be interesting to see how much of the damage got through the inner screen protector to the screen itself.

    • Tommo Lewis
      Tommo Lewis 19 days ago

@Slamp precisely, and yeah you’re absolutely right, I still see people using iPad 2’s (admittedly that’s pushing it) but a tablet that was released 11 years ago that still even works is just insane.

    • Tommo Lewis
      Tommo Lewis 19 days ago

@LightningUploads Nothing wrong with overkill. People who drive Porsche 911’s don’t need to do 200mph down the M1 but why not have the power to do so if you can.
If I can have a phone which can open an app even the slightest bit faster, why wouldn’t I? Over time it adds up. Plus if you’re buying a phone to last, with how operating systems and apps get heavier and more recourse demanding over time it makes sense to get one with as powerful of a processor as you can get. Hence why I go with apple.

    • LightningUploads
      LightningUploads 19 days ago

@Tommo Lewis the processors we have nowadays are way overkill for the things that most people do on smartphones

    • Slamp
      Slamp Month ago +1

@Tommo Lewis can completly agree with you.
Ive upgraded from an iphone 6s to iphone 13 pro. About 6 years.
And the iphone 6s is STILL perfectly useable. If a phone can last for so many years, that it only gets “outdated” because it cant play high spec games at high settings, you know its had a good run. My 6s has never lagged.
I upgraded because i wanted to get the better hardware and camera features. It lasted for so long that the general hardware requirements surpassed it.
Now, with the iphone 13 pro i can take pictures of stars in high clarity. I got a phone that will last me for another 5-6 years. Dont even get me started on their ipads.

Jerry, I've used the fold3 as a daily since just about your review video of it. The big screen gets a center line that looks like a crap just over time from folding. Also, random little green and red dots show up while the phone is charging and never go away. I love this phone but it has flaws that need addressing.

I'm gonna be getting one of these phones soon, and I'm honestly ok with little change. I believe that not everything needs to radically change every year. Sometimes just making a good thing better is enough. It inspires some kind of weird confidence in me that, while I'm sure is misplaced, is still confidence nonetheless.

@humans are the worst you, as a korean, ought to be humble. Just look at Samsung phones, how many Huawei innovations and patents are used. From multi camera array to night mode and one handed mode.
It is highly doubtful that Samsung have the waterdrop hinge before Huawei did. Why didn't Samsung patent it? Why didn't commercialize as a separate line to test the market? And most importantly, why not sue Huawei? The reason to the above questions is obvious: Samsung just don't have the technology.

With my eyesight I love the Fold for when I need to read something substantial. I just moved from the Fold 2 to the Fold 4 and the biggest difference to me is the WEIGHT. I loved the fold 2 but it was so heavy that it made my shorts droop. I would be surprised if the Fold 4 is move that 60-70% of the weight of the 2. In all otherways it is superior (faster, smoother, better resolution) but if I had owned a Fold 3 I probably wouldn't have upgraded

  • Staceyyy

Thanks for the video it really makes me feel more confident buying it.
However, I would like to suggest u to add in a pressure test when u hit on the hinge directly. Because now one of my biggest concern is some cases do not cover hinge at all when it's not open up.
I am afraid that it might break easily when falls cuz it's totally not protected at all.

@2:15 You forgot or missed that the inner display aspect ratio is different and that the hinge mechanism change too. The phone is shorter and wider while slimmer than before. Even though these differences are hard to spot visually there is no way to say this phone is the same phone when it has actually physically changed a lot more than an iPhone iteration.

intensely curious (outside of folding phones) what people want a phone to do that the iPhone can't already? (emulators in my case but eh) if you jave an idea that isn't iterative and is realistic you could be rich....it just isn't easy to make something better....every year. at some point the improvements aren't worth it to most. a faster processor is only useful if you have something you can use to push it (beyond benchmarks)....so whole that does getting better, and in turn helps woth camera processing, it can obly do so much until an industry shift happens.....and maybe folds will do that (I hope not but that's me) apple did it once with the first iPhone. no one else had anything like it it was the best by several miles....androids (not a fair comparison as they all copy each other and there are far more android manufacturers...) copied and iterated. innovated on it and (processor speed notwithstanding) got ahead... but no serious industry altering shift like the first iPhone has happened since. .if it does it could be truly inspiring

@Michael Scott The weak inner screen affects my usage not at all. I just have to conciously know not to drop it if its opened. Much like a Nintendo DS, the device protects the inner screen by itself when closed. I watch a lot of Clip-Share and the square screen does mean black bars, but coming from an iPhone 11, the black bar screen is still bigger than my iPhone was, and looks way better. Flex mode is also great for watching content without holding the phone. Gaming with Emulators is amazing, especially with the square screen for 4:3 and DS games. My favorite thing so far is the Kindle app. I own and activly use my kindle paperwhite all the time, but havnt touched it since I got the Fold since the screen is bigger, crisper and now more convenient. Also all my downloaded books have covers, unlike on my paperwhite.

I really do have to say thank you for these videos, Zack. Since there's so much overlap for smartphone internals and performance, a lot of my purchases are based on your tests! I loved the idea of folding phones from the start, but didn't end up going for one until I saw the flip 3 survive all the dirt and gravel you put it through (I took mine to the beach and the hinge is still a whisper). The inner screen has some minor damage, but thanks to your videos I knew what I was getting into with the softer inner screen and to be perfectly honest the thing has exceeded my expectations in terms of staying alive despite my daily abuse.
SO I guess my point is this: Thank you for making all of this info freely available for so many years. Even if a particular phone isn't the most durable, it's really nice to know in advance exactly what I'm getting into, and not end up with a bending iPhone 6.

Kind of an odd one but it would be great to add to a durability test. COLD TEMPERATURES! Where I live in Canada we can see extremes of -40. I wouldn't personally think of using the folding feature at those Temps but I would at -15°C is that unreasonable? It's the only thing stopping me from making the jump but I haven't seen anyone cover the topic

Wow, not going to pay nearly £2,000 for that. Perhaps adding a 3.5mm headphone socket and sd card support will bring the price down.

I'm still using my Fold 2 that I ordered right when it came out and 2 years later, it's still in perfect condition. I wouldn't say I'm gentle with it either. I've slammed it, thrown it, dropped it and both screens are fine. Even my inside screen doesn't have any damage. The only thing is that the screen protector on the inside is starting to peel at the bottom in the middle where the hinge is. I'll probably take it in to have a new one put on and I'm set. I'll probably upgrade to the Fold 5 if they finally include a built in stylus.

After scratching the inner screen, u should have peeled off the screen protector to let us know if the scratch affects the ultra thin glass. The glass is said to be 40% more durable?

@StarLightFIlmProductions. No shit, i will never buy any Samsung phone after they scammed people, like selling their phone with garbage CPU like exynos while reviewer got Snapdragon version which is far superior. Also Apple is garbage too like selling unrepairable phone, they are worse or just the same as samsung.

People in here praise Samsung way too much for this phone while this phone isn't really impressive in term of durabilty. This phone still use the same plastic screen. No matter what kind of flexing plastic screen it has, plastic screen is still plastic and it still scratched easily.

Hey Zack. I noticed in this video during the bend test, there was one dimension that you skipped bending from. Does it still survive the bend test if you flip the phone 90 degrees while open? That is, so that you are bending more like you would a normal phone and not like trying to bend two phones away from each other.

    • Jollepoker
      Jollepoker 3 months ago

@Elijah Dixon Usually I'd say that bending phones should not be possible either, yet here we are :)

    • Jollepoker
      Jollepoker 3 months ago

@Bastien Cron Yes, correct. But it is much harder to bend a sandwich of "two phones" rather than one.

    • Elijah Dixon
      Elijah Dixon 3 months ago

You'd be trying to bend the solid metal hinge in the middle. Definitely would survive

    • Bastien Cron

He tried bending it this way with the screen closed, when it is open you are still bending the same components in the same direction

I've often wondered why they don't make the big screen out of two bits of glass joined with the flexible plastic that the screen is currently made from. That way the only danger point for scratches would be the 10mm or so in the centre. Ah well, there's obviously a reason for it 🤷‍♂️

    • 75ur15
      75ur15 2 months ago

possibly lack of ability to bond the screen to two materials with different refractive indexes causing a warping or straight line distortion at the point the material changes

The fact that the fold 4 survives the bend test despite being a more fragile device is awe-inspiring. This sets a high standard that regular slabs should never ever fail this test since it is widely regarded as more durable but still happens with a particular brand.
Samsung's focus on durability over form and aesthetics certainly paid off although the barrier of entry is still rather high.

  • Northern Ontario sledderz

Suggestion. You could put the phone in the fridge or freezer and open and close it. Im intrested in knowing if the plastic they use to make the 2 sreens seamless would react negatively to the cold.

I actually think the design is fine, no need to change something that works :)
Personally I like the Fold line because the foldable screen tech is fascinating to me. And while the screen *is* soft and relatively easily damaged, their engineers really did their best to protect it when it's not in use!
What's keeping me from buying one is a) the price and b) the almost square aspect ratio. Since most of the videos I watch are in 16:9 this thing us useless to me as a "tablet".
I'd just get the Tab S8 Ultra instead to be totally honest with you! Which is a device that actually fought back during your testing, so I guess that almost earns it a spot in my backpack 😅

    • expressrobkill
      expressrobkill 2 months ago +1

My major reasons are 1 yea the soft screen, i would scratch that so quickly. 2 i think when folded its kind ugly and clunky. 3 probably the biggest reason the creasing that happens in the middle that these tests don’t show. I kinda just accepted that basically having a pocket sized glass rectangle that doesn’t fold is just a better idea. Maybe when holographic or projection tech hits the phone market we can have bigger screens

so i measured. the biggest youtube videos get is 6.5 inches hinge horizontal. 5.5 inches if its hinge vertical. my s22 ultra didnt display videos that big because of the screen ratio being 19.3:9

As a Samsung owner, I have problems with the mediocre quality on some aspects of their phones (like battery, camera response time, sound quality) considering to the pricing of these products, but I must say, they seemed to have made a folding phone that can actually survive everyday use for a longer period of time.

You allways do a "Scratch test" on the screens, but why not to include a "Break test" too?
Since where i know, "Scratch" resistance and "Break" resistance are inverse proportional right?
    Could be interesting, just saying!
