Just so everyone reading this knows, this is based off a true story, but the character of Amelia Wren played by Felicia Day is fictional. Henry Tracey Coxwell saved the life of James Glaisher by landing the balloon after Glaisher passed out from Oxygen deprivation, and the hero of this story is being airbrushed out of his own story.

While I love this historical story, I can't believe how an aeronaut hero like Coxwell got replaced by a made up woman, just to fit into the trend to have a strong female character - why on earth then not include Glaishers real wife who helped him illustrate and photograph the famous snow flakes and was quite an impressive woman herself in a time period where woman had not a lot of access to science - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cecilia_Glaisher

Sophie Blanchard and Margaret Graham were both real life Aeronauts and the charecter of Amelia was largely a composition of both of them. Stuff like this happens in "based on real life events" movies all the time. For example Jonah Hills charecter in Moneyball is based on Paul Podesta and another assistant GM

@roven 08 That's not even to mention there existed no black or brown scientists! Anywhere, not just in Britain (where you could basically count the few imported nonwhites on your ten fingers). Science was introduced to japanese (the most astute folk after the White [Wo]Man) first in the 19th Century. It took another Century before the most cerebrally-apt indians or blacks would be taught Science by the White Man. And even so, the lion's share of these (by far!) have not the mental faculties (including both intelligence and drive) to perform on a remotely agreeable level in any scientific field. This has more to do with genetic proclivity than with anything else: what's not there, is not there.

I watched the picture earlier at the cinema. In it's own right it was very watchable- beautiful cinematography and 'edge of your seat' moments- clearly the director was going for having Redmayne and Jones on screen together again and yes, they have chemistry but I still consider it a snub of Henry Coxwell.

I don't think it was political, just another hollywood movie tactic. It's based on a true event, but they're not pbs. They're not trying to educate you on this person's life. They're trying to make a hit. Creating a movie out of that event would require writing a script for it, tens to hundreds of pages of it. Perhaps there wasnt much material to write about the relationship between the two men, what kind of dialogue would occur between the two during the whole balloon ride. I'm just taking a guess, but perhaps they would rather replace the character with a woman, making it completely fictional, than to create some kind of conflict or issue between two characters based on real people.

@Craig Hewitt that's not why I called them that. I like history being told truthfully too, that's why I was watching this trailer in the first place. Their explanation was horrible and just... weird. Replacing a real human that once lived and switching their story to add an unwanted romance has nothing to do with women in film in general. It was simply about the romance. He could have kept it at that.

    • Craig Hewitt
Craig Hewitt 2 years ago +1

@janita historical events were real. I'd love to see a move about Amelia Earhart. Calling folk a loser because they like history to be told truthfully is just bollocks.

today we take flying for granted..
but to imagine .. the ability to fly in that era, the feeling to rise above to the clouds, must just have been amazing to say the least..
    incredibly risky too..
the prequel to flying machines that could be controlled in flight.
but this must have been such an experience..
what it must have felt, for the equipment to fail at dizzying heights, with no parachute eh ??
falling from the sky literally. after watching this feel air balloon trips would become more popular.

Having watched and enjoyed this movie a couple of times. Those that have also seen it watch the History Buffs short on it...if he can like it so can you. Also it's "inspired by" not "based on". Coxwell was written out of his own story yes, but when you normally see "inspired by" I've come to expect that sort of thing. Hell even Band of Brothers has a chacter that is a mash up of multiple people. That was also based off a book funnily enough.

      I would give the movie a 8 or 9 from 10.
The visuals are pretty, such as the costumes.
There are some breathtaking scenes (especially felicity Jones's character).
It's really sad they airbrushed Henry Coxwells character but whatever it's not that bad...
And I saw in an interview that they were really in the balloon the first day on set and that they crushed into trees😂 that's why I meant they deserve an oscar.
I dont wanna spoil much, but personally I felt like there was no much comedy or so in it. It was more Drama . So it's good pop corn movie. You won't regret watching.

WOW, ROGUE ONE MEETS FANTASTIC BEASTS OF THE TWO BEST FILMS OF 2016 FOR ME! Star Wars and Harry Potter share the air on a balloon over London in 1862 with Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne! A really great movie, thanks so much dear Amazon Prime, I'm watching now and I love it!!!
