Jim Knowles is Don Brown warmed over. That was a 3rd graders defensive plan. OSU fans are still running around talking about giving up 10 rushing yards in the 1st half completely ignoring what it cost them to get that result. 🤣

      dp 116 6 months ago +3

Haha great point. The Big 12 hasn't played defense in 20 years!

    • Buckguy 1
      Buckguy 1 6 months ago +1

Jim Knowles is NOT THE PROBLEM! All he can do is put players in position to make plays. He can't go down there and TACKLE for them. TACKLING has been a problem all year in the secondary. Safeties are supposed to be SURE TACKLERS, that's why they're Safeties! Cam brown missed a tackle that can't be missed. Ransom missed a tackle that can't be a miss tackle. Hickman is too good to panic in coverage to get a crucial PI call on 3rd and 12. Some mistakes were made by Knowles, but MORE mistakes were made on the field by the players. Losing guys in coverage? Again, Knowles calls the defense, it's the players who execute the plays! Getting caught with eyes in the backfield, losing track of players, not getting your man on the ground when you know that you're the last line of defense, that's a mental toughness! Get that man down, no matter what it takes, you have to make a sure tackle! 💯 TACKLING! Get that man on the ground, period!

What happened at halftime was that Ohio state was selling out to stop the run in the first half. They got torched deep. In the second half they moved their safety back to defend that. Once they did that it opened up Michigan's running game.

I’ll give Day some credit since he said they were going to hang 100 on Michigan. After 2 games he’s half way there and should get to 100 by 2024.

  • Mike Gee

Tale of two halves, OSU took away the run in the first half and UM hung in there with the pass and big plays. Then UM leaned on their identity, Smash Fest running football in the 2nd. It was brilliant and genius.

Michigan's defense is really really good from the front end to the back end. Ohio State is an ELITE program and will continue to be so and Ryan Day is a good coach. He has lost 3 games in the last two years and that's EXCELLENT. As a Michigan fan, I was furious at Harbaugh for keeping Don Brown so long and this really hurt Michigan when they could have been playing with OSU all along during Harbaugh's time even practically beating them in 2016 in the Shoe, however, it didn't bounce their way. Michigan under Don Brown played the EXACT scheme as Knowles and Knowles came from Ok State in the Big 12 which is notorious for not playing defense and high scoring. For years, Michigan's offense was really average and once they were behind then that was it. The Michigan defense under Brown gave up big play after big play and he was too stubborn to change his "Man" philosophy. In 2019, Michigan plays Alabama in the Citrus Bowl and Brown plays man coverage on Devonta Smith-BAM (first play from scrimmage torched for a 70 yard bomb! I know how OSU fans feel right now. OSU cannot play man coverage the entire game. Can you imagine them playing Southern Cal with Caleb Williams and those WR's? Even worse playing Georgia who would manhandle them across their OL and DL like they will probably do to Michigan again if they play.

    • BuckNut87 Brutus
      BuckNut87 Brutus 6 months ago

I stated the exact same thing on this feed. Brown was one-dimensional and Knowles has many different versions of his defenses, he best be thinking about using them. Day has shown he will not hesitate to remove any coach not meeting the high standard Buckeye Nation demands. Ttun lost 4 games in 2020 that gets you fired in Cbus!

Jim Harbaugh changed it up during Covid he went from a pro style QB to a Dual threat and a smash mouth OL Along with fast defenders with power

    • Arthur Fonzarelli
Arthur Fonzarelli 6 months ago +1

Except last year they had Kate mcnamara at quarterback and he's the furthest thing from a dual threat quarterback they have. He's always had a smash mouth offensive line as that's been the strength of Michigan and as far as the fast defenders with power, this year they probably have the least amount of pro prospects then they had in the last couple years on defense

The former Ohio State players saying they wouldn't have allowed Michigan players to plant the flag on the field sound like guys that just never had to deal with losing to Michigan so now they're having a hard time accepting the loss and want to talk tough. Most of us don’t care about that petty shit ….Michigan always been this way cause they use to being out sons ….Ohio state is 10-2 on y’all in the past 12 years ….and even in this one Ohio state beat themselves they was controlling the entire first half even with mistakes ….so Ohio state again with more talent lost because they made a bunch of costly mistakes when they had the game right where they wanted it in the 2nd quarter

OSU put nine guys in the box in the first half and were burned on long touchdowns, this continued early in the second half until OSU relented and then Michigan’s running game (Donovan Edwards) went off…
The only way OSU could stop Michigan’s running game was #s that left OSU susceptible to a passing attack…

That is also a HUGE PROBLEM, Ohio State has got to learn how to adjust their game plans at halftime/ make adjustments during the game! Ttun made adjustments at halftime in every game this season and dominated 2nd halfs. All year! Ohio State seems to never change what they're doing, how they're doing it during the game or at the half. They usually just end up getting a big play, or talent and depth win them the game. That has to change!

    • R M
      R M 6 months ago

Michigan QB ran the ball in the 2nd half. That was their adjustment on offense. On defense, Michigan got a little more aggressive, giving different looks at the line of scrimmage, but it really comes down to Ryan Day not running the QB at all, making it easier for them to defend Ohio State.
This game was checkers, not chess. Ohio State never made any adjustments, so Michigan didn't have to make the game too complicated. Michigan's OC admitted to having more plays ready that he didn't have to use. That's all on Day.

The reason is the rivalry gets labeled as the best is because of history. What they say about history? You don't learn form it, you repeat it. Have to give credit mainly to that guy I cannot stand for making the changes he and his program needed in order to reestablish themselves as rivals. A coach able to pass on 4 and short when everything rides on the conversion ius certainly capable of getting his team back in The Game. Thanks to that team for exposing it.

  • rct7 rct7
    rct7 rct7 6 months ago +3

This reminds me of when Herb Brooks told his 1980 Olympic Hockey team "You can't win on talent alone." For years Ohio State won "the game" before it was even played. In the last 2 years, Michigan has changed the narrative of the rivalry. It looks like Michigan is the new bully on the block and they're obviously not intimidated by the Ohio State aura or 5* talent. Turns out, that coach up north is pretty good. Not only that but they're pretty good at coaching up and developing lesser quality talent. Ryan Day needs to move away from the finesse offense his wants to the power/spread teams Urban had. The only way to beat Michigan is to be more physical and out work them cause the days of just showing up with all these talented 5*s is over.

    • David LeMaster
      David LeMaster 6 months ago

I don't buy it for a second. Ohio State will be just fine. The last two years Ohio State has had a terrible QB. I know, I know, everyone thinks that CJ Stroud is great. HE's not!! He's completely over-rated. He's one-dimensional. He's slow-footed....never runs....and is incapable of running. This makes things pretty easy for a defense in an RPO situation. HE's not dynamic in any way. Sure, he can put up gaudy passing numbers, because against most teams he can stand in the pocket and survey the field. He has NFL receivers that get 5 yards of separation. But when Ohio State plays a team with equal talent, CJ Stroud stinks!! Next year The buckeyes will stomp Michigan, because some hard-luck NFL team will take Stroud off our hands. Don't believe me? Just wait.

    • David LeMaster
      David LeMaster 6 months ago

@bomb pop I never said he was anything close. One dimensional. Enjoy this year....you guys earned it after being cowards and not wanting to see Justin fields in the shoe 2020. We'll see next year with Stroud gone.

Good point on lack of mental toughness! We were tight and nervous and not confident, even in first half! As a psychologist this needs to be addressed---OSU-Mich has always been high pressure-why can some coaches and players handle it and others not? Goal: Controlled, focused rage!

This is exactly what happened to the John Cooper teams in the 90’s. They would dominate their schedule right up to the Michigan game. All of a sudden they couldn’t make any plays on offense and the defense couldn’t stop the Michigan running game. Cooper’s Ohio State teams were much more talented than the Michigan teams they lost to in that era. I have to believe it was mental. There was so much pressure on those teams to beat Michigan that they folded the minute things didn’t go their way in “The Game.” Coach Day and the Ohio State teams in this era are going to feel that same pressure going forward. It will be interesting to see how they respond to this challenge.

    • legacyns1
      legacyns1 6 months ago +3

Because we as fans have our biases about how good or bad we think our team or the opponent is. The guys playing the game can see what's actually happening real-time. All the pressure was on OSU. All the talk about last year being a fluke. OSU was going to get their revenge. The game was at shoe. Perfect weather. Michigan's top offensive and defensive players were out. Fans wanted blood and expected a blowout. OSU was tight because they realized it wasn't going to be a 1st round KO like many had been expecting. OSU is used to Michigan folding in the past. However, once Michigan punched back they knew they were in a fight that they could lose.

  • R M
    R M 6 months ago

I listened to Joel Klatt's discussion with Dave Revsine on the Big Ten Network, and Klatt said that Michigan is the better team on the interior of both lines and he believes that is the primary area where Michigan has improved, in order to win these last 2 games in the series.
On offense, I thought our interior linemen held their own and played well, but I can't say the same for our defensive tackles, at least not late in the ball game.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that Michigan's big runs are right up the middle, see those gaping holes, and acknowledge that the interior of the Ohio State defensive line is where the problem starts.
Going forward, we have to do a better job of recruiting high-level defensive tackles. Maybe use the portal. We have Hall, Williams and Hamilton and we recruited Kanu last year, but that's not addressing that position adequately enough if we're going to improve our chances of beating Michigan.

  • J

Michigan is the best 2nd Half team in college football period. Holding the last 6 opponents to 17 points in the 2nd half. To top it off outscoring the last 6 opponents 84-3 in the 4 qtr. At 18:20, the Buckeyes were going for it on fourth and five. They had a fake punt set up that would have resulted in a touchdown or first and goal. It was there. Could drive a semitruck through that hole. The long snapper didn't execute the fake, so the punt was nearly blocked and a big play and momentum shift to Ohio State was killed. Instead of regaining the lead the defense now becomes ultra-aggressive and gives up big plays by being out of position. I hope we get another shot at them soon.

Four big plays resulting in td's did us in. Knowles has said that his defense gives up big plays and that's unacceptable. It reminds me of Don Brown of ttun and his man to man aggressive defense which didn't work and he's gone. Knowles must change his mind set and be willing to use a zone defense at times and teach the secondary to LOCATE THE BALL!

What the hell is up with our team..
Really missing Urban right about now. Our teams under Day have no grit. No drive. All finesse, no power and hunger. No toughness in Ryan Day teams.
Also, I blame most of this on our offense. We’ve had one of the best offenses in the country all year. We should’ve at least been able to win a shootout. This is our first year under coach Knowles. Our offense really sputtered Saturday. I really thought we’d be able to put up way more points than they did.

I believe Kevin Wilson and Ryan they are the offensive coordinators which is a problem as well because their philosophies are very similar they want to throw the ball way too much they don't care about game control the team does not play with confidence when it counts and way too much finesse on offense now would you really want to see this team on the field against Georgia? If they suffer another blowout loss there has to be major changes yes Ryan day has a record of 45 and 5 but that stuff is padded by Rutgers and Maryland of the world when he's had to step up against major competition he's choked for the most part he has one playoff win in those 50 games

Just wait.

    • CoachBeam
      CoachBeam 6 months ago

@Neh Ru pressure from the fan base, unfortunately. Day has never really had any heat on him but now he knows he’s coaching a one-game season essentially next year. I think you’ll see drastic changes in the offseason. He really needs an OC. Even the best pitchers still have catchers and it would help take away some of the arrogant play-calling and poor decision making.

Obviously the last 2 defensive coordinators are from the Ravens. Jim has been running an NFL style defense for the last 2 seasons. Big on the interior, good Defensive ends/OLBs to seal the edge, hybrid safety/corners to tackle in space and blitz. LBs that can cover, and tackle. It’s pretty simple and it’s designed to beat OSU. And it has worked beautifully!

Ohio State forgot that this is a rivalry game. It’s understandable why that happened. They had won 17 of the last 20 games against Michigan. “The Game” is back and Ohio State needs to accept that fact and prepare accordingly. They are not going to win this game by throwing the ball on 65% of their plays. They need to run the ball well and bring back a balanced offense if they’re going to beat Michigan.

  • Buckguy 1

    Tackling, TACKLING, TACKLING!!!
Coaches had their faults in the game without any doubt. On both sides of the ball. Day getting too conservative, Knowles getting too aggressive(blitzing without the need) but players have to tackle! Mental discipline needs to be infused into this team. False start penalties, pass interference, unsportsmanlike conduct are all mental discipline, preparation, and self control. These are things that are coached all year, we had these issues ALL SEASON! Never fixed, that's coaching! 💯
The last 2 TD runs by edwards, untouched, that's mental breakdowns. The defense gave up, especially the last one. They were no longer playing for the game, they were playing for PRIDE at that point, and GAVE UP!!! THAT, is more disturbing to me than losing the game. They were broken 💔 at that point. Where were the defensive leaders? The Mike Doss of this defense? The AJ Hawk? Someone to stand up, grab a facemask or 2(or 4) and say "what the 🤬 are we doing, FN HIT SOMEBODY" get a stop for our offense "THIS IS OUR HOUSE, OUR PRIDE" and on offense? NO LEADERSHIP! None of the players or coaches got fired up, emotionally charged, on the sideline to get this team picked up, fired up to go out there and make a play. In the past they had that player, or those players on one if not both sides of the ball, not for a couple years now! #GOBUCKS

I think stroud lack to run Ryan days play calling bad defense man it's all across the board. This is why urban always recruit running QBs because they can get you out of bad situations stroud doesn't do that. He runs side line to side line in hopes to find A open man when he can really run and pick up the first down and move on. In my opinion I believe it's alot to do with the player's look back 2 years ago they played more tough

It's so easy to shut down the pass with 2 deep safeties if you know the coach across the field refuses to run the ball to win the game. Ohio State abondoned the run yet again and became one dimensional. Ryan Day consistently neglects the run game which is why we have poor RedZone numbers. Then we wonder why we're not great in short yardage situations. Well you neglect the run game everytime and then when you need it your SOL.

There is clearly a predictable formation problem. We saw a UM DE drop back in coverage and bat down a pass because he knew exactly what was coming. Ryans offense is built on bland scheme with great playmakers. There is no seperation, the blocking responsibilities are far too heavy....the scheme is predictable. I do not blame the defense.... these offensive woes have been happening ALL YEAR... and most ignored it. The defense held when it needed to, there is no reason this explosive weaponry couldnt combat UM...or any team for that matter on offense.

  • green postdoc

Ohio State coaching is primarily what went wrong, all the way from in-game decision-making (not going for it on 4th down in 3rd quarter, loading the box and leaving only a couple of players to run down a player who gets thru the line of scrimmage, horrendous tackling skills which should be basic, etc) to pre-game planning to motivating the team (much like Urban Meyer used to do -- and who beat Harbaugh 4 times). The coaching MUST change or they will certainly get demolished in Nov/23. So Gene Smith has some serious decisions to make or this situation will deteriorate even more.
