- Published on Mar 18, 2023 veröffentlicht
- Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were kids when they met in Cambridge, Massachusetts; they were Hollywood rookies when they won an Oscar for their screenplay for "Good Will Hunting." And now, in their joint production company's first feature, they're back together on screen in "Air," the based-on-true-events story of how Nike created a basketball shoe around a talented but untried NBA rookie, Michael Jordan. Correspondent Tracy Smith talks with Affleck and Damon about their decades-long friendship, and about collaborating on a story of how heaven and earth were moved to sell a sneaker.

I LOOOOVE the idea of actors equity. It's time the team that make movies happen see royalties and what they deserve to.
Would you have it both ways so if it tanks they have to pay? Also lower set fee's as well I assume?
Not all movies make money, and most movies are paid for by people who expect a return on investment. This equity sounds like a great idea, and I am not against it, but it's not feasible. The people who spend the millions of dollars for a movie deserve whatever money they get in return, and heck maybe 10% of the net earnings should go to the lead actors of the movie, but giving a percentage to the full and crew is just not possible. You can always have an employee owned entertainment company, but they would have to be the ones who pay the millions to make the movie happen, and good luck on making a profit.
That's how and why United Artist was formed when Chaplin, Pickford and Griffith came together to give more power to the artist than the studio.
@JACKOTACO Yes, but UA also went public back in the 1950's, and there is nothing independent about that. Nothing against them trying, and those three were awesome on giving it a shot.
Seeing these two guys together never fails to make me smile.
😑 ugh maybe back in 1997
ok
@Liz Herbst cynical much?
They have been secretly married since 1999. It will come out sooner or later.
“If you love the people at work…you probably have a pretty good life.” Spot on by Ben!
notice Matt doesn't say much...is Ben gaslighting? Was he a huge pain in the ....with his drinking all these years?
I noticed too. I think he's gotten in trouble with what he's said recently but he's usually very verbose.
@lynn hubbard Matt has always generally been the quiet and introverted one. Clip-Share commenters become body language experts so fast😂😂
Sounds a lot like the different large Clip-Sharers we have today. From MKBHd, to LinusTechTips, to Wong Fu Productions. Even, MrBeast.

Creating a production company together that aims to address the disparity in artist compensation is to be commended. Wishing these guys continued success!
Predictably PC and sad, actually.
@case barreoltt yeah so sad that they help underpaid artists get what they are worth lmao
@Ashton Likes nah it's yet another virtue signal. These guys are washed up and begging for relevancy.
@case barreoltt all actors are begging for relevancy, at least these guys are doing something that also helps others
Don’t usually see Ben so animated. The movie looks good. Definitely plan to go see it. These guys have not only survived Hollywood, but flourished. Kudos
Yep, Ben is boozed up or something.
He’s happy. When he was younger his interviews were always animated. He went through this leading man phase after and got kinda sad. But I’m glad he’s in a good place , with his children, his ex wife, his new wife, his understanding of the industry and alcohol.
he seems bipolar
Ben is most likely a person that has deep spiritual battles (which is mostly a Blessing), and also, an introvert for the most part. So, when introverts express themselves when accompanied by a good solid friend or loved one, he is more safe and comfortable and can do so with more confidence than usual, and that can look "offish" or awkward...just my 2 cents..lol
He is usually like this when around his husband Matt Damon
Giving the film crews a bigger share of pie than normal making the production's objective so great! Go Damon, Go Affleck!

The Gospel:
(I am not a bot, I'm just someone who enjoys spreading the gospel. Much love to you all!)
The gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died for our sins and rose again, eternally triumphant over His enemies, so that there is now no condemnation for those who believe, but only everlasting joy.
Peter says in 1 Peter 2:24, “He himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.”
So Christ died not only to forgive sin, but also that it might die in the lives of His people.
~Quoting John Piper~

My friend put together a great PowerPoint about the Gospel and Jesus being the prophesied Messiah. I'd like to share if you're interested, just reply and I can send you the link. May Jesus Bless you!

Two good men, two nice men, two mentally gifted men, two very good actors, and two good friends for life. I like both and have enjoyed the majority of their movies. We need more Afflecks and Damon's.
Loved these two wonderful actors, two great directors. Good at what they do.
There good looking to.
But are they really good men? Ben abused alcohol to the extent it destroyed his marriage and Matt scammed a bunch of people w/crypto ads.
the only better bro duo is Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

It's so important to see friendships like this. I think back to people like Jack Benny and George Burns, and later, Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner, and Bob Newhart and Don Rickles, and Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. These friendships really do stand the test of time and get deeper as the years go on. They give me hope for the future with my own friends.

A marvelous absence of talent, these two. Neither has the slightest sense of what it means to perform in front of an audience.
Bill Clinton and Jeffrey Epstein
LOL those are certainly three replies to cherish
Donald Trump and Steve Bannon
It's great to see Ben doing well. I'm happy for him.
No one can deny that what these guys did is remarkable. One was 25, the other 27 when they wrote one of the best scripts Hollywood had ever seen. A tour de force, a stroke of genius from two creative minds. Even if they've reached their peak at that moment, you gotta give respect where respect is due.
Its so cool to see these guys still friends after all these years!!!
Love these guys.
Nice
Nice
Good
very nice
Nice
Love these guys. 7 Oscar nominations in 25 years between them, a dozen huge franchises, and wins for Best Screenplay and Best Picture - not even acting - overall. Real, true, committed filmmakers. In it for the long-haul. Look at how both spoke about the movie business a decade ago. Two decades ago. Three decades ago. They saw it coming and stuck with it through all the changes, still focusing on making great stuff together. I wish we had more of that.
And the fact that they both worked together with Robin Williams. Their screenplay earned Williams an Oscar for Supporting Actor, they both are really one of Hollywood's best duo
Ben and Matt are so real and down to earth, unlike so many Hollywood actors. They’re great family men, great actors and they have such a rare friendship, and such respect for each other. It’s always so good to see them together. I can’t even imagine how anyone could have anything bad to say about either of them.
Thank you all for your comments, love and support I really appreciate 🙏
Matt and Ben have proven over the years that “friends are better than money”
It’s crazy they both had such different but prolific careers since GWH….Damon was a box office force and afflack became a critically acclaimed director
Illuminati
They are AMAZING examples of decent humans: friends for life, good dads, wildly talented and creative...how lucky are we to enjoy the results of such a partnership... can't wait to see this film!!!
Not sure how good of a dad and husband Ben has been.
@S-BOSS have you met him? Cause I have and I know a lot of people who have and he’s the sweetest! (Jen too)
@2010 IT'S not YOUR business,!!!!!.😡🙄😳 .
This is the Ben I’m used to seeing. His love of producing films brings him so much joy.
Producing films yeah that great BUT HIS MAIN OCCUPATION IS BEING ACTOR.
Thank you so much I really appreciate your support!🙏
One of the best friendships in the industry. Happy for them both.
Can't wait to see this.
Ben did an outstanding job directing 'The Town,' and 'Argo.'
This looks like a winner. Especially with Viola Davis, and Chris Tucker.
Matt Damon adds another stellar dimension. 👌
Win Win for sure......a winner.
I just saw the movie and it made me feel really good when I left the theater and have been thinking about it all day. Now I've just watched several interviews with them and it just feels so uplifting.
Lovely to hear Ben so animated, in his absolute happy place, creating, directing and hanging out with a mate. Matt and Ben forever! 🐑🐑🇳🇿🇳🇿NZ
Ben sounded manic
Urghhhh Ben….
@Linda Rothe yep, for sure
@Linda Rothe yeah whats your read? btw i saw him in other interviews filmed within hours or days of this and he seems to be fighting off a cold or rough flu ( i hope) like his entire upper nose is red unlike peeps with a blow habit and everybody i know in LA who has kids has been sick 8 times these past 4 months and so i think what we are sensing is him trying to push through his promotional tour comittments being super super sick.
Thank you all for your comments and support much love to you all ❤️
You can literally tell on Affleck how happy ,content he is! Good for him.
He finally got the love he wanted !
seems to me he still desperatley trying to convince himself that he is happy. the guy has issues
@Arrest Hillary give the guy a break!
@Arrest Hillary do you know him personally? Let the man be happy.
Affleck is a very good director and when his heart is in it a good actor... Damon is almost always great in his roles... Viola Davis is fantastic....looking forward to this movie.
You hit the nail on the head. When he TRULY believes in a role, it shows. It also shows when he doesn’t, unfortunately but that’s just who he is I think. He seems like the type that finds it difficult to hide his emotions - that might stem from his time in recovery, where honesty and truthfulness is always first. Either way, I dig that about him.
He does best when playing himself. Gone girl the way back even chuckie!
Great to see them both telling stories that matter and reflect and celebrate the human spirit.
Ben is a great person unfortunately misunderstood and an amazing filmmaker...can't wait to see this great movie!
I just love their friendship! Good for these boys - they came full circle...literally and made their dreams come true. Bravo!
Actors Equity is a LONG time coming! I’m glad these two are in charge. I’ve a lot of friends in the industry that literally don’t get by and the idea of them being hired for production for Matt and Ben projects lifts my heart and makes me smile… like, my friends will be okay… ❤
Seeing Ben so happy and healthy is truly wholesome
So nice to see them still buds after all these years. Love it! Can’t wait to see the movie ❤️
Thanks for your continuous love and support itstroyarenee ❤️❤️
For how long have you been a fan of mine itstroyarenee??
Love the ending with 'the love of what you do' coming to the front. These guys are great and the actors' equity production company is brilliant, showing a piece of their hearts. As Ben talks about his work and life and loving what you do, being surrounded by the people you want to be around and actually appreciating it, tells me a lot about his character. It also echoes what I have heard Phil Collins say repeatedly about his career. Luck is big part of it. (yet you must have the goods!) But then loving what you do, shows up.......again, and again, and again. The definition of success.
Been watching these two since I was a kid and I’ve grown to live these guys. Respect for everything they’ve built. Thank you for the inspiration.
If making a bunch of movies together with your friends was good enough for The Rat Pack, it is good enough for Matt and Ben. I hope they make a dozen more movies together. I love seeing these two friends so happy.
These guys deserve to be where they're at. They've worked hard all of their lives.
These guys are breathing much needed life into theatrical for this genre of feel good movies. I know this isn’t a biopic but it is great story telling and I cannot wait to see it in my cinema.
I just loved Good Will Hunting and saw it many times over the years. If you have never seen it please check it out! I wish they would have made a sequel to see what happened in their lives. So excited for these two getting together again! "Hey everyone, how do you like me now?" Love them!!
Man Ben turned out to be a brilliant director. Just amazing. The Town was amazing. Argo too. Their friendship is inspiring.
We just saw Air today....it's absolutely incredible for so many reasons! Perfect story telling, inspiring and up lifting. 🔥
Two great guys, smart and talented. I’ve enjoyed watching their careers.
Ben is such a talented director. This will be great.
The dynamic duo. How fortunate they are to have a confidante and collaborator through thick and thin that helps the other be their best. Rare and Priceless.
The interview is well done, interesting and pleasant.
The Nike Jordan’s story is a good opportunity for these two friends to be reunited on screen...
Ben Affleck is radiant at the mention of Jennifer Lopez; first the smile then Matt Damon's laugh says a lot about their complicity...
They share their lives with very beautiful devoted women.
Happiness and Success to both!
So happy to see Ben happy, he deserves it, worked hard for it he's had great success but also a hard time with his own struggles. Damon seems so level headed and very smart, great chemistry they've always had. Wishing them continued success, they've made some great films (Gigli and the last Bourne movie aside though 😅)
i love them. Ben is so genuine, I think he doesn't know what is to be fake or superficial. Good for him. It's very refreshing.
Genuine? Lol
You do realize he’s a professional actor, right?
Genuine!!?? Fake Ben Affleck!??
So inspirational to listen to stories like this. Hollywood is still this brandcity, probably only one in the world still, where is so attractive to every pop creator: either as a destination, either as a example how to create, consume, spend leisure around the world. Every idea which can be thought and written is one thing, but when it showed globally, even if just as a sci-fi, it enscribes unreachable power, especially to those who just starting to live. Even too much content can't be a problem for that
He will forever be remembered as the perfect Batman we almost got.
Yeah I thought he was solid as Batman. Wish he could have directed his own solo Batman movie.
One of my most fav Hollywood friendships. Two people just building each other up. Sheer awesomeness!!
Love to see these two together, their friendship is legendary, but mostly I like seeing Ben being sober and doing what he likes best, blessings to all~
Imagine how many great talents lost or didn't get what they deserved just because they weren't given enough chances or even enough for what their work was worth. Absolutely great for these guys to do something about that. 👍👏
They need an Artists Equity for all the musicians who are being absolutely ripped off by Spotify and their record companies. Mad respect for Matt and Ben for doing this for the bts people who make movies.
These two got the Hollywood's greatest promance. And hopefully they'll stay that way until the end😌
Imagine having a friendship like this that's awesome
What I loved when they won the Oscar was they got it from Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, another great team who made so many movies together!! And I don’t think they really realized that at the time.
I love this so much and seeing them together, Ben sounds so happy and joyful, and their new production company sounds AMAZING! 😍🙌💖
I love Matt as an actor and person. He is one of the best actors around, and most importantly, his personal life is private. Ben is a great director. He is seen happy and relaxed. I hope he finds happiness and what he is looking for with JLo. I think he likes a private life, but he hasn't found it yet. All the best for both of them. I am down to see the movie! Love Sunday Morning!!
He loves his life with the woman he chose! His words. No need to psychoanalyze
I think he likes the paps too much.
His whole reasoning for not showing us MJ is why Ben is such a good director. I feel like a lot of other people wouldn’t make that decision.
Love hearing ben affleck talk about work/life balance
balance with J Lo???????
He's a joke.
But why J Lo?? He’s better than that!
Now it turns out that they know more about Ben's life than he himself, they live with him, and that it's impossible for Jennifer to balance Ben's life, even though Ben said that Jennifer takes care of him, are they stupid, haters or both 🤪🤪🤪
Ben sounded manic
Great human beings. Great talent. And they both sound so rational and wise in their interviews.
These two guys together are awesome!❤️😊👍
Nah
Saw it, it’s amazing. Blew me away, wonderfully written and acted.
I'm gonna have to watch this. I love both actors. Good to see them working together again.
Good for them. I cant wait to see the movie and their future collaborations.
One of the best interview I seen from both Ben and Matt.
What a great team!!! It's not often that you see two friends "make it", and still remain friends.
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are true friends it's always fun seeing them working together looking forward to see the movie 🎥
Who knew Ben was such a talker! Love them together. Matt is so funny. Will definitely go and see this.
Love that these two best friends are back together doing movies.. ❤️
Seems like it had been awhile since Ben's enjoyed himself on a movie set, good to see him doing the stuff he wants to do, he's really much more creative than he gets credit for.
In my mind I see them as the young men in GWH, but wow, time flies. And I am the same age as them. I am so glad their friendship lasted through the years and they are in such a great place in their lives - still working together.
I enjoy watching the friendship between these two talented actors.
Mate! Love these guys! Us Brits do appreciate the achievements of these guys. Plus, anything that mentions MJ is entertainment gold!
Here are two FABULOUS ACTORS, not only doing for themselves, BUT doing for those who work so hard to make these films truly come together financially especially. They both seem truly "GENUINE"! Ben's thought "If you love the people you work with...then you probably have a pretty good life" is could NOT be better said. So looking forward to this movie for sure. Arlene
Love seeing Ben & Matt working together again on something..looks good! Now let's get Marr Damon that overdue Oscar!
He already won an Oscar.
Lets get Jennifer Lopez that overdue Oscar!
Damon deserves an Oscar for his acting, not just screenwriting.
Overdue???
@Nicholas Garcia 😂😂😂
I could care less about celebrity branded shoes, but I will probably see this when it's out on streaming just because of the great cast. I hope it doesn't just glorify Nike, and somehow shows the fact that the company got rich for decades while using factories that had child labor, forced labor, and unsafe conditions.
And bravo to them for starting Artists Equity. If paying production crews more money will make movies more expensive to make, it's probably a drop in the bucket compared to what their movies will rake in.
Nope it's gonna be a big commercial for Nike and the white men who run it
@LMS lol right, the movie is about Michael Jordan but he’s not even in the movie
Matt Damon has kept his mystery as an actor. One of the rare actors that doesn't shove his politics out there and ruin it
Actors Equity - BRAVO!!
Maybe this concept will spread throughout the entire entertainment industry. 👏
My all time great people...not just actors but role models ❤
The end hit home about not liking your coworkers causing depression. Ugh. I can’t find a way out. Glad to see both are doing well. Feels just like yesterday I saw Good Will Hunting in the theater. I still listen to the soundtrack a lot too.
I was also through GWH to know the then genius musician Elliott Smith
Gracie & Burns; Affleck & Damon. Such collaborations are rare as comets, wonderful to watch, Hopefully, never burn out, and make everyone envy those who can endure the personal, familial and professional arguments that fracture or up-end less stable friendships.
Everyone who has seen 'Good Will Hunting' probably has a 'favorite scene' from that film which is filled with memorable and relatable moments.....that film really put these two actors (names, faces, words and works) in the hearts of film buffs like myself. This 2023 film 'Air' gifts us a great 'only in America' story and as importantly, a bird's eye view into the very foundational principles of capitalism in the world of international commerce. 5/5stars. (p.s: only Lady Robin Roberts (ABC) could manage to present NIKE 'Air Affleck(one name says it all), Air Viola Davis and Air Matt Damon' 'Nike Air' shoes🎁). LOL and Kudos.
Always great to see these two together.
It's a great movie. Beautifully written, directed, cast, acted, shot and cut. Difficult to fault.
These two could be in any movie together and I would see it. U can tell they like working together and I think it shows in movies they do together. And u can see how strong there friendship is even if u didn't know how far back they go
Huge yay!! Sooo happy you're working together again. And that *you're* happier!!
I'd thought that this was what you should be doing--creating, making your own movies!! To be fulfilled and happy. Both of you!
Watched the wonderful "Good Will Hunting" again last week. So much there!
Cheers!!
One of the best duos of all time!
Love these two!!🥰 they have always been so great together ❤
Matt Damon has some of the best feel good movies out there. Good Will Hunting, We Bought a Zoo, The Martian, Ford Vs Ferarri and now AIR.
I’m SO sad this movie was not made for families to watch and enjoy together. It could have been such an informative and uplifting movie, please make movies like this clean and not rated R so more people can watch and love it 😭💔🏀
A wonderful interview. I've been a fan wot Ben and Matt for decades, and yes, I am looking forward to watching "Air" in the movie theatre...
Love these guys. Period. Just. Icons. Hands down. ❤️❤️ cheers to Gen X greatness 🥂
Love seeing the Real Ben Affleck again & Matt Damon has to be the wind beneath his wings! Great interview!
Ben and Matt back at it again! Can’t wait to see them take on the skies in #Air🛩
Please ! With tenderness for them.
Such a great interview! This meant more to me than I realized.
I’m watching this movie right now and I LOVE it!!! Love the music and I You guys this movie is amazing!! Makes me proud to be Generation X and also I love Matt Damon and Ben Affleck together again.!! I remember 1984 like it was yesterday.
Love both of them and anything they do will be a success
The last duel was clearly not a success and it is a very good movie. 🙁
@Adan Sanchez We'll, it was a success creatively. It was another example of how when they work together, the result is stellar.
Sad that it wasn't a financial success 😕
@Adan Sanchez The Last Duel flopped in a year where most films did. And it is a good movie!
These two dudes are so fun to watch in movies and in real lives
2 brilliant guys. Been following since Good Will Hunting. Artist equity is just brilliant. Giving the guys who work with you a bigger share. Hats off Sir.
What’s good will hunting??
@Joel Pineda its a movie
@Vrindavan Guj and what’s it about?
@Joel Pineda watch the movie
@Vrindavan Guj but who’s Ben affleck and Matt Damon two successful singers and entertainers
They are really be a good friend. Love the way that Ben was talking about. Can not wait to see you guys on air !!
