Ben Affleck and Matt Damon on "Air"

  • Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were kids when they met in Cambridge, Massachusetts; they were Hollywood rookies when they won an Oscar for their screenplay for "Good Will Hunting." And now, in their joint production company's first feature, they're back together on screen in "Air," the based-on-true-events story of how Nike created a basketball shoe around a talented but untried NBA rookie, Michael Jordan. Correspondent Tracy Smith talks with Affleck and Damon about their decades-long friendship, and about collaborating on a story of how heaven and earth were moved to sell a sneaker.

I LOOOOVE the idea of actors equity. It's time the team that make movies happen see royalties and what they deserve to.

    • David Kelly
David Kelly 2 months ago +6

Would you have it both ways so if it tanks they have to pay? Also lower set fee's as well I assume?

    • HighwayLand
      HighwayLand 2 months ago +2

Not all movies make money, and most movies are paid for by people who expect a return on investment. This equity sounds like a great idea, and I am not against it, but it's not feasible. The people who spend the millions of dollars for a movie deserve whatever money they get in return, and heck maybe 10% of the net earnings should go to the lead actors of the movie, but giving a percentage to the full and crew is just not possible. You can always have an employee owned entertainment company, but they would have to be the ones who pay the millions to make the movie happen, and good luck on making a profit.

That's how and why United Artist was formed when Chaplin, Pickford and Griffith came together to give more power to the artist than the studio.

@JACKOTACO Yes, but UA also went public back in the 1950's, and there is nothing independent about that. Nothing against them trying, and those three were awesome on giving it a shot.

Ben is most likely a person that has deep spiritual battles (which is mostly a Blessing), and also, an introvert for the most part. So, when introverts express themselves when accompanied by a good solid friend or loved one, he is more safe and comfortable and can do so with more confidence than usual, and that can look "offish" or awkward...just my 2 cents..lol

      The Gospel:
(I am not a bot, I'm just someone who enjoys spreading the gospel. Much love to you all!)
The gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died for our sins and rose again, eternally triumphant over His enemies, so that there is now no condemnation for those who believe, but only everlasting joy.
Peter says in 1 Peter 2:24, “He himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.”
So Christ died not only to forgive sin, but also that it might die in the lives of His people.
      ~Quoting John Piper~
      ALSO
My friend put together a great PowerPoint about the Gospel and Jesus being the prophesied Messiah. I'd like to share if you're interested, just reply and I can send you the link. May Jesus Bless you!

Real, true, committed filmmakers. In it for the long-haul. Look at how both spoke about the movie business a decade ago. Two decades ago. Three decades ago. They saw it coming and stuck with it through all the changes, still focusing on making great stuff together. I wish we had more of that.

You hit the nail on the head. When he TRULY believes in a role, it shows. It also shows when he doesn’t, unfortunately but that’s just who he is I think. He seems like the type that finds it difficult to hide his emotions - that might stem from his time in recovery, where honesty and truthfulness is always first. Either way, I dig that about him.

Love the ending with 'the love of what you do' coming to the front. These guys are great and the actors' equity production company is brilliant, showing a piece of their hearts. As Ben talks about his work and life and loving what you do, being surrounded by the people you want to be around and actually appreciating it, tells me a lot about his character. It also echoes what I have heard Phil Collins say repeatedly about his career. Luck is big part of it. (yet you must have the goods!) But then loving what you do, shows up.......again, and again, and again. The definition of success.

So inspirational to listen to stories like this. Hollywood is still this brandcity, probably only one in the world still, where is so attractive to every pop creator: either as a destination, either as a example how to create, consume, spend leisure around the world. Every idea which can be thought and written is one thing, but when it showed globally, even if just as a sci-fi, it enscribes unreachable power, especially to those who just starting to live. Even too much content can't be a problem for that

Seems like it had been awhile since Ben's enjoyed himself on a movie set, good to see him doing the stuff he wants to do, he's really much more creative than he gets credit for.

In my mind I see them as the young men in GWH, but wow, time flies. And I am the same age as them. I am so glad their friendship lasted through the years and they are in such a great place in their lives - still working together.

Here are two FABULOUS ACTORS, not only doing for themselves, BUT doing for those who work so hard to make these films truly come together financially especially. They both seem truly "GENUINE"! Ben's thought "If you love the people you work with...then you probably have a pretty good life" is could NOT be better said. So looking forward to this movie for sure. Arlene

I could care less about celebrity branded shoes, but I will probably see this when it's out on streaming just because of the great cast. I hope it doesn't just glorify Nike, and somehow shows the fact that the company got rich for decades while using factories that had child labor, forced labor, and unsafe conditions.
And bravo to them for starting Artists Equity. If paying production crews more money will make movies more expensive to make, it's probably a drop in the bucket compared to what their movies will rake in.

    • LMS

Nope it's gonna be a big commercial for Nike and the white men who run it

The end hit home about not liking your coworkers causing depression. Ugh. I can’t find a way out. Glad to see both are doing well. Feels just like yesterday I saw Good Will Hunting in the theater. I still listen to the soundtrack a lot too.

Gracie & Burns; Affleck & Damon. Such collaborations are rare as comets, wonderful to watch, Hopefully, never burn out, and make everyone envy those who can endure the personal, familial and professional arguments that fracture or up-end less stable friendships.

Everyone who has seen 'Good Will Hunting' probably has a 'favorite scene' from that film which is filled with memorable and relatable moments.....that film really put these two actors (names, faces, words and works) in the hearts of film buffs like myself. This 2023 film 'Air' gifts us a great 'only in America' story and as importantly, a bird's eye view into the very foundational principles of capitalism in the world of international commerce. 5/5stars. (p.s: only Lady Robin Roberts (ABC) could manage to present NIKE 'Air Affleck(one name says it all), Air Viola Davis and Air Matt Damon' 'Nike Air' shoes🎁). LOL and Kudos.
