Hey grain, I know this will probably go unnoticed, but you should check out the Castle of Sintra in Portugal, its probably one of the only castles in existence with so many contrasty colors, and some contrasting shapes that somehow all work together. Not saying to build it, but it could be of some inspiration for a future build!

  • Nyerguds
    Nyerguds 4 months ago +134

Oooh. I've been to Corfe Castle! They called it a "medieval skyscraper". Apparently the ruin is a bit atypical in that it was actually demolished, rather than just abandoned; the result of negotiations for repayment after a military defeat. The point where the castle was located was too strategic and was to never be used again.

    • Nyerguds
      Nyerguds 3 months ago +3

@Rachelcookie321 Yea, you can see the main gate is broken in the center and sagged away oddly; that's not something simple neglect will do.

    • Rachelcookie321
      Rachelcookie321 3 months ago +3

I was just sitting here wondering how castles fall into ruin like this. Like a fire wouldn’t do it since it’s vast majority stone. So I was wondering did people just leave it abandoned for 100s of years? But surely someone would want to snatch that up and live in it. But I got my answer for this one. It was intentionally destroyed.

If you do decide to make a interior do remember that medieval people loved color. So make sure to include white washed walls, and paintings on most of the walls.

This build also serves as a quick lesson on how to make _Minecraft_ castles that feel _authentic._ One thing you notice pretty quickly about Corfe Castle is that its walls follow the contours of the hilltop -- the defenses encircle the portion of the hill that's the shallowest gradient, leaving the steepest inclines leading to the base of the walls. It makes use of the natural terrain as much as possible.

@NeoTrinity thank you for stopping spamming. spam advertising is not a good way to grow a channel, it will just bring in haters. The best way to grow your youtube channel is to make something unique and high quality so that people who like your content will only be able to watch your channel to see it. That's why channels that just copy other channels aren't successful, because people would rather just watch the original.

Oh my goodness, Grian! I had this idea several months ago! My family has long loved watching documentaries such as the Visions Of series and Castles and Ancient Treasures and I thought it would be cool to recreate the castles and fortresses that we've seen on those, both in their modern states and then to try to rebuild them as they were in the past. I am fairly new to Minecraft, though, so I had settled on Grianan of Aileach (great name, right?! ;D ) as a simple shaped build to do. I started researching it but the scale kind of daunted me and I put the idea aside for now. Imagine my surprise to see you doing the very thing that I thought would be so amazing... and doing it way better than I ever could!!!!! You did a fantastic job and I hope you'll be doing more of these in the future!

Both your rendition and the actual place is absolutely beautiful and stunning. You did an awesome job restoring it even if it not exact.

This is super cool! Would love to see you build more 'historically inspired' things. Lots of possibilities here if you ever fall into a creative rut.

    Amazing Castle.
Many mediavel castles where "white whashed". Do you know if that was the case for Corfe? some of your images suggested that. Seeing "raw stone" and associating stone bricks and grey with castles is a rather modern thing. Many castles where "painted" (with something similar to plaster) white on the outside and colourful or with textiles on the inside. Often Castles included wooden structures (or smaller ones were completly made of wood, wood was a far more common building material for castles than stone, but those generally didn't survive well), but from the outside you nearly couldn't tell because both were just white.
I'm not an expert on english castles, I know this was often the case in certain german regions.
I do like to build whitish castles in Minecraft (mostly not plain white) because that gives you more possibilities to create contrast with the roof and the terrain and knowing that white walls aren't historically incorrect and colourful interiors were a thing as well is nice imo.
Nothing bad about stonish looking castles. But you're generally speaking not wrong if the castle doesn't look "stonish". For Corfe specifically I don't know.

I've been to Corfe Castle in my younger years, amazing to see it brought to life ^.^ I'm thinking about doing Nottingham Castle but it might be too big of a build for a novice.

Hey Grian, I had a totally epic idea for the next season of 3rd Life!
It could be called Lost Life, and the premise of the season would be similar to Last Life, where at the beginning of the season everyone would be randomly assigned 1-10 lives, HOWEVER at the start of each session those lives get lost in a jumble and reassigned to players. Oh- you HAD 10 lives last session, well this one you're beginning with 2. It'd be a great way to keep everyone on their toes, maybe even having the life trading system again?
