That happened to my little brother in the park when we were kids. They had them ride things mounted on springs you used to rock back and forth on. Got his nads caught between the spring. It was a blood bath, I just remember the image of him waddling like John Wayne down the road crying with blood dripping from between his legs. He must have been about 8 at the time. This is how they made bikes in the olden days before they realized they could fill in the spaces between the coils to get maximum stiffness out of the springs. They called this new spring type a "tube" and bicycle makers have been using it ever since.

Technically the question at 1:19 didn't make sense, Newton metres, or Nm, are a measurement of moment (which in layman's terms means "turning force"), not simply "force". A Newton meter is defined as the moment caused by a force of one Newton applied exactly one meter away from the pivot.

  • tvsinesperanto
    tvsinesperanto Year ago

@3:45 - The exact moment I internally said "I told you so" and then laughed right along with you because I've made that mistake 100 times.
Those springs are basically strings. Beef up the tension.
Dunno why you are using 2 springs though. A lighter spring on either axis would have done the job more efficiently.
But I get that the pint was to do something engaging. You nailed that.
EDIT: I should really wait until the end before I comment.

  • Mtn Sage
    Mtn Sage 2 years ago

I'm impressed by this is many ways.
    First the time and effort.
    Second the money.
    Third. Just the idea.
Fourth that he started out so small.
Fifth. The chain stayed on alot longer then I would expect. You doing what you did to the bike, you still managed to get it just close enough so the chain falls off a little bit of the time. I don't know with a platform like the springs, can produce a stable enough distance to not let any slack fall on the chain and them possibly jump off.
And I would love to see you come back to this idea. But instead of just making the structural integrity of the bike be springs, look at some points on the bike that you could put springs on and maybe make this bike something different. Something jumpy. Probably more dangerous. So there is risk with this play. But. Again. I'm still impressed.

You'de better to use spring to store and restore braking looses. Springs can also be made from carbon fiber...
but this wall grab is priceless

Colinfurze: "Lets make a bike out of springs"
Voice of logic deep inside it's head: "should we make the suspension out of springs?"
Colinfurze "That is utterly stupid mate !?"

Use Co axial tubes with linear bearings along with these springs. Will give better result.

I think it would work better if the bar angling down at 135 degrees was the only spring with no top bar at 90 degrees. The spring I think would have to be significantly thicker and more compact with less room between the coil. Other than that, keep the remainder solid and you should have a better ride

What I got from this video: to make a bike out of springs, you need the springs to be as unspringy as possible

I think you were on to something, but i guess you need pipes that can slide together in the springs to keep it more rigid but lets the springs move
