I should read the books?..... How ‘bout noooo? Just because Georgie boy is pretty much gonna leave all the book reading nerds with the bluest of balls doesn’t mean I need to let it happen to me. The tv show may have had a disappointing ending but it least it did have a conclusion. Winds of winter at this stage looks highly unlikely GRRM has lost the passion for the mainline series and he’s not getting any younger. He just wants to enjoy his success and live the high life and dabble with side projects. Maybe he’s keeping extensive notes and he’s raising up a crew of trusted underlings who will be able to thread the eye of the needle when he’s no longer around. However I’m not holding my breath. He’s probably got an air right contract written up that will ensure every single one of his unpublished writings will be run through a shredder, burned or deleted the moment his heart stops beating. I know it’s morbid and in bad taste to say it so plainly but of all the authors who seem likely to do that I’d put him in the top three at least.
🤣🤣 fair enough. Martin based a lot of GoT on real events though. The Wars of the Roses, the Black Dinner, Habsburg inbreeding, Charles the Mad, Henry VIII seems to have inspired numerous Kings of Westeros. You probably know more than you think now 🤣
which is sad because a lot of materials from books, ASOIF being one of them, are inspired from real history/persons. And, even if there are no dragons or fantasy/ sci fi, real history can be even crazier than books sometime
@Ryan Juguilon I'm pretty sure they hate Targaryens, why would they fucking fight for the people they were trying to destroy and who essentially exiled them or flat out destroyed their houses. They didn't fight for Viserys or Daenerys (whom they met), why would they fight for Aegon if he's a Targaryen like them. This makes it all the more suspicious...the fact that they were kept apart is very interesting in that regard.
Who would they support? There was no longer a Blackfyre since its supposed to be extinct. If the Golden company wants to return to Westoros and get their lands back only a Targeryan claimant can do it. Blackfyre or true Targeryan Aegon is one of their best bet to finally come home
Think we can all agree that George RR Martin is probably one of the coolest people when it comes to things like this. He's created a world filled with drama and history over hundreds of years.
I often don't like when authors lie how they had it all planned from the beginning and fill their stories with retcons, but seeing how neatly the War of the Ninepenny Kings brings all the fathers and grandfathers of so many characters together and ties seamlessly into the main story just blows my mind
@Senna Asad I've been under the impression that people hype up Euron way too much. Like yeah, he is going to be a significant threat, especially with the possibility that he might use the Dragonbinder horn against Daenerys' dragons (although it might be more for the dragon egg he aquired - either way him having a dragon is bad news), but I have significant doubts that we are going to see all this super big Eldritch horror stuff people keep insisting is coming with his plotline. Again, the biggest threat Euron poses is with the artifacts he aquired from Old Valyria, such his Valyrian Steel armor and the Dragonbinder, and it's much more likely that those items will be center stage when the climactic final showdowns of the story take place rather than whatever Eldritch horror hype people give him. Maybe I'll be wrong, who knows. That's just my two cents on the matter.
@Jonathan O'Riley It's amazing that you didn't even mention the likes of Euron or Bloodraven in your summary. To me Euron is THE example of jumping the shark. Simply because he's a character who sounds like he should be part of a creation myth for house Greyjoy, rather than a present figure that the world needs to deal with
@Jonathan O'Riley a lot of your listed problems aren't problems. Jon Snow coming back as a fire wight with a changed personality works fine, and he might even choose to die after the story (see Beric Dondarrion). Lady Stoneheart is just a plot device to bring Arya back into the light, will most likely die 1 or 2 chapters after sending Jaime to kill Cersei. Faegon's invasion will result in Dany burning KL or something similar, again he is a plot device (see Quentyn). Tyrion won't be Hand of the King, but 100% a hostage. Dany would have to be braindead to kill him, which she isn't. Euron will play a role in the Others' storyline and so will Bran. Idk what Martin has in mind but it's not gunna be grounded and realistic, it's going to involve lots of eldritch blood magic. Martin hasn't "written himself into a corner" just because you don't have the imagination or reading and comprehension skills to see where the story is going.
@unropednope46 it's not that he doesn't PLAN to finish, fool, VALAR MORGHULIS. He still has an entire 7th book to complete, and look at the guy. He aint exactly a picture of health.
Hearing the theory of Bran becoming king as a puppet of the Three-Eyed Raven makes me think that George told D&D, "Bran will be king in the end," but didn't elaborate beyond that.
@Jordn Chn I suspect cerci will marry euron greyjoy. And ally casterly rock to his cause and take out the reach. I think staniss will deafet the freys but lose against the Bolton. Leaving Jon to take them on with the wild lings and the Vale.
@TheVoidLord He would be like Odin, his crown and eyes would be every where, so every plot against him will be quickly discover and quite down. And also he is propably also immortal.
"They don't want Aegon to be king cause he travelled with this hedge knight... And got these crazy ideas that peasants should have rights and stuff..." I can't believe how hard I laughed at this LOL
@Shaheen Shad Depends. Historically we have Poland, whose kings were voted into office by a bunch of lords. In the end, the oligarchic system, and the competing interests of the lords failed the Kingdom, leading to the "Deluge" and dissolution of Poland as a country until the modern age. In general, it stands to reason that an oligarchic system would work better, however in a historical context, there are not that many oligarchies and the ones that exists are not any better than the kingdoms and empires around it.
The Targaryens’ greatest enemy was always themselves. The Dance of the Dragons, the Blackfyre Rebellions, Robert’s Rebellion, the inevitable Dany/Faegon conflict. Their lust for power was always their undoing, even at the brink of extinction.

The only thing that makes me lean more into the "Blackfyre" theory is : everyone in the redkeep knew the young prince Aegon, they knew how he looked like . So switching him wouldn't have worked on Tywin. But I still hope it's him . I support the Targaryan rule as well
I can't believe the show completely omitted the Young Griff plotline. This is the first time I'm hearing of it and I want to see a show/movie adaptation of it. Come on, an exiled prince who's supposedly the last of House Targaryen's biggest rival/obstacle and has the biggest potential to win the Game of Thrones before Daenerys even sets foot on Westeros, that's made for the silver screen!
I and MANY others think that Varys the Spider is a secret Blackfyre. He shaves his head to not give his platinum hair away. "Varys" sounds like a Targaryen name. Varys is POSSIBLY Shira Seastars son. Varys got his balls cut off in a bloodmagic ritual because of his kings blood. And Varys plot is all for young Griff to take the iron throne for the Blackfyres
This plot line in the books, believe it or not, was very controversial. Many thought it was pointless and questioned why GRRM is bringing in a whole new claimant to the throne. When he was cut from Season 5 it was regarded as a good call. I was always one of those that defended Young Griff. And then Season 8 happened, and everybody realised "Oh, I guess Griff is more important to the story then we thought" there was a post in the subreddit basically saying that removing Young Griff is the source for Dany's plotline falling apart. Turns out the incredibly meticulous author has an intent of grave importance for a character that was foreshadowed several books ago lol. To toot my own horn a little, it was a great hit of vindication. Better than heroin.
@Alex James wouldn't even really need an episode, just a 10-15 minute sequence at the start of the season. "something, something, something. dragons died out. something, something, this guy is called Aegon the unworthy." show starts.
George said that the series needs at least 4 seasons to tell the story properly. At this pace, that could cover a large bit of the 200 year gap. I'd love for it to work through all the Blackfyre stories.
I would love to see it but I dont think they would make a show on the blackfyre rebellion even for years after hotd ends because to a more casual audience they would probably think "oh another Targaryen Civil War but this time without dragons." Maybe after hotd hbo might do Aegons conquest or the Long Night prequel instead.
theres no way u can sneak up on a flying chopper from the ground and shoot 3 arrows perfectly ? lmao theres no need for heat seekers anymore then .season 6 was the end
@Harleking YT I mean both the Faith and Old Town had no problems with the Good King. But then again he was way too good for Westeros. That's why everything fell apart after he died. No one would ever nor will ever live up to him and his two dead sons.
@Revan Ruler *It did peak in season 4 but 5 and 6 were good and awesome, respectively. I think those 2 seasons (especially 6) get more hate than warranted because they don't follow the books 📚.*
after the reveal of Aegon the Conquer's dream of ice and fire in HoTD, and Bloodraven's connection to prophecy, magic, and the old gods, i believe that Daemon Blackfyre was the brother he loved (by all accounts Daemon was a pretty great guy) but Bloodraven killed him to preserve the Targaryen dynasty in order to ensure the birth of the prince who was promised, which is an amazing layer tragedy
@Deathgrapess it has been pointed out to George that the Valyrians, the greatest empire the world has ever known who controlled massive sentient flying napalm cannons, built only a single outpost off the coast of Westeros and never attempted to go any further. almost as if they were afraid of something about Westeros. like maybe Dragonstone itself was a kind of watchtower to keep an eye on it. at which point George answered, (paraphrasing) "yes, that is kind of interesting" and then refused to elaborate further. so, there is that.
@The_Drop Bear the book isn’t canon either, in a way, it’s just what the Maesters and Mushroom believe happened or were told what happened, that’s what makes the show incredibly intriguing.
@The_Drop Bear its an idea in the books though, in an interview with grrm, he mentioned how some people think this is the reason for aegons conquest, whether it is true in the books will probably never be confirmed, but the big man himself has confirmed it is an idea
I’m rewatching this video for the umpteenth time, and I came up with a tinfoil idea, cause recently someone on the ASOIAF Reddit posted how many Targaryens were alive at one time during the 300 years, and basically Aegon IV single-handedly doubled the amount of Targaryens alive, so my tinfoil idea is what if he knew about the Prophecy? And he figured that the best defense would be to have as many Targs around to mount a defense, but of course he was also despicable, and bitter, so the tactic wasn’t exactly based in good faith
Blackfyre also had a good claim through his mother. Daena was from the senior line while Aegon the unworthy and his father came from the Junior line. Lots of people thought Daena should have been queen after all her brothers died, not her uncle.
After the Targaryen civil war, it was established that the male line would always be superior and preferred to the female line. So your senior/junior analysis doesn't work.
A lot of people interpret the "mummer's dragon" to mean a fake dragon, but what if it literally means "Varys' dragon" as in this Targaryen is merely his puppet, could be that Aegon really is potentially the son of Elia and Rhaegar, but he is utterly Varys' instrument whether aware of it or not.
To think that bloodraven was the mentor to Bran who eventually get the iron throne is incredibly bizarre and I hope we get more information about this in the books if it eventually leads in that direction
@Ralco Gaming No, that's pretty much entirely wrong. The Baratheons did not rule as storm kings prior to the Conquest, that was the Durrandons. The Baratheon origin is unknown, they might've been a vassal house of the Targaryens or maybe the name was invented, but the first Baratheon we know of was Orys Baratheon, rumored to be Aegon the Conqueror's bastard brother. He was Aegon's right hand man during the Conquest and was named first hand of the king. He defeated Argilac Durrandon during the war, the last King of the Stormlands. He then married Argilac's daughter and took the stylings of the Durrandons (their sigil, house words, association with storms, etc.) and Aegon granted him lordship of the Stormlands. Robert Baratheon's great grandfather, Lyonel Baratheon, briefly rebelled against the Crown, naming himself a new Storm King when his daughter's betrothal to the crown prince was broken. He was defeated, but as a concession Aegon V betrothed his daughter Rhaelle to Lyonel's heir, Ormund. Rhaelle and Ormund had a son, Steffon. Steffon and Cassana Estermont had Robert. Thus Robert's grandmother was a Targaryen. This heritage was used to provide Robert with legitimacy after the rebellion, as Robert actually was next in line to the throne after Aerys and Rhaegar (and his children's) deaths, ignoring Viserys and Daenerys. Funnily enough, tracing Targaryen succession, Stannis is next in line to the throne behind Daenerys. If Dany dies, Stannis would be both the legal heir to the throne via the Baratheon line and via the Targaryen line.
damn, knowing daemon in the heat of battle helped his wounded enemy get to safety only to be peppered with arrows by his half brother kind just hurts man
This game of thrones novel should be made into a series. Hopefully it would be written by competent writers who care more about sticking with the original material than their own ego.
@Noah Pancakes HotD is written by Martin lol According to him HotD is how it happened, while the books (well...the few pages we get of it) are inaccurate/biased retellings
Man, English teachers the world over have been waiting for this. “Why was his name bittersteel, what is the author trying to say?” “Bittersteel was bitter”
The Blackfyre rebellions are probably my favorite piece of asoiaf history and I am deeply vested in the Blackfyres, so this was really really cool to see you cover this. Thank you!
The Ninepenny Kings are probably my favorite (incredibly minor) group of characters. I think I'm always fond of outlaws and outcasts who gripped power and use it to smash at Lords. But I'm aware they would've been just as bad if not worse if they had won.
@King Edward "Longshanks" I, Hammer of the Scots, Lord of Wales and King of England The only thing that is abundantly clear is that you've never read the books
@Mellow Yello Jaehaerys' mom got with a Baratheon, Jocelyn, they had a daughter that married her nephew Aemon. They had Rhaenys together. After that I'm pretty sure that Ormund was the last one to produce progeny with a Targaryen.
@Stego1819 They used vague elements of the Winds of Winter after source material ended, they did not and by and large did not get most of the later seasons from George. They got vague hints and a handful of minor things like Hold-the-Door. They made their own story and even when they followed the source material they told a radically different story than the books by huge meterics. Bran will not be made King. I am calling it now. There is zero chance the unwritten end books are going to end the story like that, sorry dude. They haven't even been written yet. Stego is just downright wrong though.
@lidocaine pka If that were the case the show would have ended like that but it didnt. The show ended with Bran being king and we know that D&D have their ending from GRRM.
The “point” of Young Griff vs Danaerys may be that it wakes her up to how her house, and the Valyrians before them, fell … through not being united. Then she realises she can’t unite the kingdom and summons the great houses to decide “what unites people” like the final episode. Just an idea 🤔
The thing is young griff actually is a good kid and might actually be a great king whether he's a blackfyre, targaryen or some common valyrian bastard doesn't change the fact that he's a good dude and also really good at rallying people to his side like he did with the golden company leaders remember they were ready to say "screw this we're not gonna fight for you" but then young griff said some words and suddenly they were like "hell yeah we'll fight for you" and the men of the golden company really seem to like him and even if the leaders (whom he personally had to rally) believe he's a blackfyre, the bulk of the golden company think he's targaryen.
Personally I like the idea that in fact in a cruel twist of fate Dany is the mummers dragon, that her heritage is a lie and she doesn't realise until the last minute. As targeryan dreams usually lead to their downfall as they misrepresent the information to fuel false ambition. The term 'slayer of lies' could also have a double meaning which I've not heard anyone else mention thus far. Yes it could refer to someone who slays a liar. But it could also refer to a liar known to kill, that her slaying is based on lies. It seems to me like that could be a more convincing and shocking twist which would reframe the characters actions up to that point in a very fascinating way.
At this point your summarized theories are as good as we're gonna get, so canon in my books. Thanks for the great work! (Also wow there's a lot of great new art for these characters huh?)
14:52 While yes, the Blackfire Rebellion could've been stopped had Daemon at least been imprisoned, I still feel that killing Aenys and Haegon Blackfire (especially Aenys) was a bit much. Haegon maybe, since he had just surrendered and maybe the idea of rebellion was still heavy in his mind, but he killed Aenys after essentially betraying him by breaking his promise, which is enough to incite rebellious thoughts in others.
Is it possible that Aegon didn’t actually legitimize his bastards? Is it possible that the maesters lied to create another rift in the Targaryen dynasty?
I really want the feud between Bloodraven and Bittersteel to come to fruition somehow, with the Golden Company maybe facing off against the Old Gods in some way
"We do not sow" is such a blunt and badass threat in my opinion and I always thought it is pretty cool. But I like "Ours is the fury" and the phrase of the Golden Company as well.
Just one thing I thought was unclear. It is said in the books that Bloodraven's intentionally targeted the twin sons of Daemon BlackFire. Because he knew the Daemon would not abandon his children. And that's what happened, after Bloodraven's and his archers had killed his children, Daemon refused to let go of the bodies, which made it easy for Bloodraven's to kill him with his archers. Bloodraven was also the last wielder of the darksister sword. When Brann finds him in the cave, if I'm not mistaken, he also finds the sword. Another thing the series ruined...
I come back to this channel's content more than any other GoT channel. Just the perfect balance of info, thoughtful analysis and a dash of humor. Well done
I truly love watching and learning from your videos. Your work is appreciated, and thank you for the time and effort you put in to every one of these videos.
Sometimes I just imagine someone like Oversimplified narrating the history of Game of Thrones. "This enraged his father......who punished him severely".
I personally believe that it all comes down to the topic that GRRM likes best: Lust for power is always the undoing of those who wield it, even at the brink of extinction, they'd rather destroy the place than to loose or not have their way and be forced to make compromises.
I only recently discovered this channel and now I am binge watching. Your voice is incredibly soothing and due to your pace I can understand everything in a 30 minute or more video. Please, continue to make more videos, for we will watch your career with great interest!
Guys like Griff and an independent book- like Euron would have given the Series the plots and tension it would have needed. It was only about action and war. The end was more or less foreseeable. This would have given material for a great season 7 and 8 i think. I always thought, that Euron didn’t learn that much on his tours and kinda wasted them. I mean, he could have had an army full of people and techniques around the world. In the book, he is a smart and scary unpredictable person.
Can you make a playlist that has all your videos based in the thrones universe in chronological order? Would be cool to try and wrap my head round it in order 😂 great video as always!
I think that Asoiaf book ending would have some similarities with a GoT show with some smaller differences. In the show, when Daenerys found out about Jon's true parentage she felt frustrated and jealous. I really couldn't understand why she felt that way, because one of her main duties as a future ruler is to secure the legacy. And she couldn't wish for a better man than Jon Snow who would make her a true Targaryen heir. I imagine that book Daenerys would feel different about that and she would accept the truth about Jon being her nephew. But the main factor for awakening her genetic Targaryen madness would be just Aegon. Before Daenerys arives in Westeros, Aegon could liberate much of the realm, or even take the Iron throne away from the Lannisters. Things that might happen are those that the common people could name him Aegon the Liberator and his Blackfyre heritage officialy revealed. When Daenerys arrives the common people would not feel trustful about her mostly because of her foreigner army of Unsullied and Dothraki. She would be jealous over Aegon for winning the favor of Westerosi people over her but that jealosy could turn into true madness once she finds out he is a false Targaryen or Blackfyre, a sworn enemy of her ancestors who fought hard to secure the throne from them. That could be main reason for book Daenerys to commit the same attrocity she commited in the show's final season. Blackfyre line is finally destroyed in the Burning of King's Landing, Jon Snow assasinates Dany and Drogon destroying the Iron Throne in the same way it happened in the show with Bran Stark becoming a new king elected on the Great Council meeting.
While I think most of this will happen, Dany and fAegon, during the Burning of King's Landing, could have a moment similar to Frodo and Sam on Mount Doom after the Ring was destroyed, conciliating with each other before they die by the flames of the conflict they both started!
For some reason, I think the Targaryen lore is much better after the Dance of Dragons and after they loose their dragons, it's much more fun seeing the Targaryens face to face on the same level with the other lords, it gets boring with them resolving everything with OP dragons 😆
The fact that all of this is just background lore and took place decades before the main series is just staggering. I still struggle to comprehend how one man - Martin - can be responsible for all of this.
This whole thing kind of reminds me of the war of the roses. Two different lines descended from a king fought over the English throne for thirty years, and it eventually ended when the two lines married into each other and became one. So I think that the Targaryen-Blackfyre conflict could possibly end with a marriage between Griff and Dany. It would lend legitimacy to both of them as monarchs.
ive watched this video probably 6 times and still learn somthing everytime...i love this universe and honestly if they made this into a movie or like a small series that would be amazing
*(**25:31**)* I love that animated House Targaryen sigil that shows each of the three dragon heads breathing fire in succession, ending with their necks bending down into the proper placement, as the whole thing slowly rotates counterclockwise! I'd be really interested to know where you got it from! Did you create it yourself or get it from some other source?
@Blackfish I don't know! All I could find is that he refused to answer. Maybe he just has a policy against giving straight answers when it comes to characters' connections. Balerion the cat > "the bad cat," for instance. He doesn't even answer questions about cats.
@Alec Did GRRM specifically refuse to answer like a "hmm we'll see" kind of thing, or was it more like "are you seriously asking me this question with a super obvious answer"? Dunk is Egg's best friend and there's no other character called that in the whole series.
George R.R. Martin has been surprisingly quiet on this. No bullshit, it's actually _not_ confirmed. EDIT: I mean he's been asked specifically and refused to confirm or deny if Duncan the Small is named after Duncan the Tall.
Correction: Tywin, Steffon and Aerys became friends years before the War of the Ninepenny Kings. Aerys and Tywin's friendship began when Tywin served as a cupbearer at Kings Landing.
Might I persuade you to do a video on House Hightower? They are by far the most mystrious house in the Reach, especially considering they are a powerful ally and one of (if not the) richest houses, considering we have seen very little of them in the main story
I love your theories and support them completely. It makes so much sense, why would the Golden Company go back to Westeros with a Targaryen Prince? Only for a Blackfyre.
This one was excellent and a long time coming. Listening to you describe all of it, it's clear to me that it's vital for the ending of the story. Perhaps in the end it will be Danearys burning down King's Landing because she fears she's lost all legitimacy against what people think is a Targaryen, who she knows is not, instead of Cersei Lannister, who I'm going to guess will lose the throne to Young Griff while everyone else is busy fighting the White Walkers up North.
For the first thing, this for sure proves that George Martin is a damn genius. I think he is my favorite writer after all, how he created all this is beyond my understanding. ASOIAF is the greatest fictional world for me
Aegon is essentially the Blackfyre version of Egg. Tough and humble upbringing, knows how the common people live, seems to have a good temperament. I think the trick is that Aegon wins the throne and turns out to be a great king, and when Dany returns and kills him she'll be hated for its and maybe that turns her mad?
Ngl I’d kinda love it if Young Gfriff ended up king, with or without Daenerys or Jon or anyone else. I think it would be a really cool twist and honestly not awful for the realm if he is truly as good as he is said to be.
I can just imagine bittersteel riding into combat with the tune of "Guess who's back, back again. Bittersteels' back, Tell a friend" playing in everyones head
Your videos and overall dialogue is sensible, impressive and entertaining. I hope you never stop with your videos. You have charisma my man! Keep it coming... I will never stop listening
When Brynden said he had a brother he loved, a brother he hated, and a woman he desired, I found it odd that he didn't say sister when referring to Shiera Seastar and it's also in past-tense like he was over it. Pretty weird that he didn't have a kid with her if they loved each other that much. Maybe there might be more drama between the four of them like if Daemon was also inserted into the love triangle, Brynden would have a reason as to why he killed the brother that he loved after possibly finding out he had an affair with his woman Shiera. There might be an undisclosed Blackfyre bloodline if Shiera had a kid as well. Even though Brynden said that when you pardon rebels, you only plant the seeds of the next rebellion but spared the offspring of his lover and brother, possibly because the child was a female and could not lay claim to the throne or due to some lingering attachment or uncertainty of her origin. Maybe the kid, who shares a name that closely resembles her mother Shiera, was actually Serra Targaryen, wife of Illyrio and mother of the young griff, Aegon Targaryen. It would be poetic irony as to why Brynden would hate the Blackfyre bloodline so much and maybe explain as to why he wanted to raise Bran as his successor if he never had any true heirs from his bloodline.
That, sir, is the most understandable and clear video about the Blackfyre Rebellions I've seen, compare to other ones on Clip-Share that are very theoric and not precise at all And the Blackfyre era is absolutely amazing, they should do series on it, after House of the Dragon because it's an even more interesting period, with less dragons but more plots and battles, that are way more interesting to me. And come one, Brynden Rivers only by himself is already worth a TV series, his life is just a whole show just by itself and he had the most incredible journey in the history of Westeros I believe, probably in the top 3 most powerfuls "humans" in the history of this universe, with all his skills, his knowledge and longevity, and most people don't even know this character, what a shame. Please HBO, make a Blackfyre sequel.
Something that bugs me about the king bran ideas is he can actually have children unless someone cut his jewels off. Being paralyzed doesn't remove any ability for children can just make it more difficult
I think Illyrio fed into Viserys’ delusions of grandeur to make Young Griff look like a more desirable option as king… I am just confused as to why he gave Danaerys the dragon eggs and all that 🤷🏻♀️
Re: Dany's reaction to "Aegon". I've figured she was going to burn him like that as soon as the Golden Company showed up in season 8. And suspect that the common people of King's Landing embracing him is the motivation for burning the city. (I also suspect that Ceresi is locked down in the Red Keep under siege by the GC so that while the reasoning isn't the same as in the show that the GC and the city both burn)
The whole situation with Danny, Aegon and Jon raises the perfect succession crisis to poke fun at how bloody stupid monarchy is and proves Varys point of power resides where men think it resides, and everyone who argues irl for any character because they are the rightful heir is missing the whole bloody point. It’s being raised in house of the dragon also. Who should rule, the kings only surviving child, his daughter. Should it pass over her to the kings oldest sons son. If the female line is to be considered then who has first dibs Griff or Danny. Should the marriage annulment put Jon on the throne, which goes back to the start of the blackfyre crisis. Bastard pretenders ancient bloodlines and claims. Real answer, who tf cares. They are all children less than 20 years old who’ve never spent a day in the capital or in the heart lands of the kingdom learning the culture and society. It also applies to the succession of the lord of winterfell with Lyanna versus Neds children and blahdee blah. Jon’s “I dun want it” is like the only morally sensible and not selfish thing to do. Only just resolution that involves the least incest if Aegon is a blackfyre, marry Danny, combine your forces. They’ve both been raised by Illyrio and it’s honestly the only plan that makes sense as to why he’d keep Danny alive if he has Griff.
Bloodraven's idea of "sacrificing honor to save the realm" remembered me of Jaime, when he stabbed Aerys through the back, killing the king he swore to protect, to save the city, throwing his honor in the mud in the process.
I wonder why Illyrio would be so good to Dany if it’s only for his ‘son’ to fight her later. Maybe he thought she wouldn’t make it? Or maybe it’s just good old-fashioned asoiaf betrayal.
It would make too much sense if Serra, and possibly Viserys, are descended through the female Blackfyre line through Bittersteel. Bittersteel desired his sister Shiera (who bears a similar name to Serra, maybe Quaithe/Shiera was influential in Viserys and Serra's early life?), but Bittersteel eventually married his niece, a daughter of Daemon Blackfyre. So there's the female line of Daemon's combined with Bittersteel, the Golden Company's founder and another Targaryen Great Bastard who was in line for the Iron Throne.
Daenerys is gonna make a mess of things isn't she? Slaying aegon is gonna slay more than just one lie, especially the ones she's been telling herself about her own house's role in this story.
@G filmer I believe she will die in the long night as well but I believe she’ll die in childbirth like her mother before her. She will then reunite with Drogo but continue her line. The witch’s prophecy from book one basically.
fact is if dany dies in the story slavers will ruin the cities and innocent ppl's lives again .she has done more noble things that should not be undone . ultimate ending should ben dany keeping the secret about griff's true identity and leaving to Dragonstone cuz she wants her children to be free .KL is not a good place for dragons
Aegon is likely a descendant of Bittersteel and Calla. Daemon married his daughter off to Bittersteel and Bittersteel bore the sword after Daemon died. It’s likely he had a kid and passed it down to him.
This was a great reminder of how much better the books are, how much more rich and compelling the story is told, then the rushed final seasons of the show.
im in the middle of reading asos and struggling for motivation to read more due to a lot of the chapters being very similar to scenes in the show, but after this video i fell a huge boost in my drive to keep reading and reaching adwd and the prequel books maybe i'll finish all of them before twow. actually no. i'll definitely will finish before then. ill aim for the house of dragons release to finish them

Old man
I swear I know more about the Targaryen dynasty than real history at this point
who was the fifth king of westeros?
@Treize Khushrenada « radical revisionist… »
The man is so fragile he can’t take different opinions.
And, even if there are no dragons or fantasy/ sci fi, real history can be even crazier than books sometime
a man after my own heart lmao
I'm thinking Young Griff didn't get enough Westerosi History lessons if he thinks it's normal that the Golden Company supports him.
@Alan DA this is the single biggest dick-suck I've ever seen.
@Dan Haggerty not ripped. Analagous in some aspects, but hardly a carbon copy.
@Nathan Cunningham nahh let him be😂😂he just meatriding hard bro never touch another book
@Alan DA Tolkien's world is literally the benchmark of modern fantasy, like, old valyria and it's collapse is literally numenor
@Dan Haggerty and most of Tolkien is just illogical craddle-stories
I often don't like when authors lie how they had it all planned from the beginning and fill their stories with retcons, but seeing how neatly the War of the Ninepenny Kings brings all the fathers and grandfathers of so many characters together and ties seamlessly into the main story just blows my mind
👌
Glad to see that Bloodraven grew his eye back after half a century
"So Bittersteel was bitter". This is the kind of deep analysis and critical thinking that keeps me coming back to this channel lol.
@STOMPER lol. U fuckin love it bub
@DaStellarNapster bahahshahs omg YOUR SO FUNNY!!!! NOT!!!!!!
Maybe his lower- steel was bitter because he couldn't have his lil sister.
@Pedro Valente so that would make that child bittersweet

The fact that Egg named one of his kids “Duncan the small” after Duncan the tall has to be the best detail in the entire series
Hearing the theory of Bran becoming king as a puppet of the Three-Eyed Raven makes me think that George told D&D, "Bran will be king in the end," but didn't elaborate beyond that.
@Markus Haahr no one told D&D to write all the inconsistencies and character assassinations that they did.
@Jordn Chn I suspect cerci will marry euron greyjoy. And ally casterly rock to his cause and take out the reach. I think staniss will deafet the freys but lose against the Bolton. Leaving Jon to take them on with the wild lings and the Vale.
Yes this is 100% my theory. Ive said to a few people the ending of got makes alot more sense in the context of the book.
@TheVoidLord He would be like Odin, his crown and eyes would be every where, so every plot against him will be quickly discover and quite down. And also he is propably also immortal.
@Markus Haahr I don't feel too bad for them at all, they quit caring. When they want to be, they are good writers.
"They don't want Aegon to be king cause he travelled with this hedge knight... And got these crazy ideas that peasants should have rights and stuff..." I can't believe how hard I laughed at this LOL
Yup, treating people equally or at least with less prejudice and injustice is so crazy!
@Leon Russell but it's not like their smallfolk has a say, the nobles choose the new Iron King or Queen
he should have been king
Ahahahahaha me, too! xd
So if Young Griff is a Blackfyre, is his real name probably Daemon? and not Faegon?
@Being Anna Faegon stands for "Fake Aegon", which is a nickname for Aegon "Young Griff" made by fans.
Faegon?
This is one of the reasons, i dont want that a Targaryen gets the Throne in the end, because their „lust for power“ will maybe bring new wars…
@J K. Robert Baratheon literally has Targ blood in him, that is why the lords made him king than Ned stark

I completely buy into Young Griff being a Blackfire. It just makes so much more sense than him actually being Aegon.
The only thing that makes me lean more into the "Blackfyre" theory is : everyone in the redkeep knew the young prince Aegon, they knew how he looked like . So switching him wouldn't have worked on Tywin. But I still hope it's him . I support the Targaryan rule as well
I’m convinced Varys may be a blackfyre and has kept his head shaven to hide his silver hair.
Blackfyre and Targareans are all the same. If Griff is proven to be capable, I think it's fine to let him fulfill his cause
@Wingnut1989 me too. Give us some hope, grrm. We all know that a Targarean living alone in the world is always a terrible thing.
I fucking want griff to be Aegon so bad
We have this whole backstory to the blackfyres for a reason, perhaps.
I’d love to see the full Blackfyre rebellion war after HOTD is finished. I feel it’s a time that’s so well developed and fleshed out it’s needed!
@Ahmad Tarek yeah, throughout many seasons. The Blackfyre spin off is needed, just as Aegon's conquest, and of course Robert's rebellion itself
I would love to see it but I dont think they would make a show on the blackfyre rebellion even for years after hotd ends because to a more casual audience they would probably think "oh another Targaryen Civil War but this time without dragons."
Maybe after hotd hbo might do Aegons conquest or the Long Night prequel instead.
@Wani-Zame agrees although dawn could solve that problem
*I thought the greatest threat to Targaryens was "kind of forgetting" about their enemies while their enemies certainly haven't forgotten about them.*
😂😂😂
theres no way u can sneak up on a flying chopper from the ground and shoot 3 arrows perfectly ? lmao theres no need for heat seekers anymore then .season 6 was the end
@Mr. Fantastic less bad at least
That is probably just a HotD thing, given the show isn't canon and the Prince that was promised turned out tk be a load of horseshit im the show
I’m rewatching this video for the umpteenth time, and I came up with a tinfoil idea, cause recently someone on the ASOIAF Reddit posted how many Targaryens were alive at one time during the 300 years, and basically Aegon IV single-handedly doubled the amount of Targaryens alive, so my tinfoil idea is what if he knew about the Prophecy? And he figured that the best defense would be to have as many Targs around to mount a defense, but of course he was also despicable, and bitter, so the tactic wasn’t exactly based in good faith
Gotta give it to Golden Company for staying loyal to their commitment of putting a Blackfyre on the throne
I think it's more driven by Bittersteel's hatred for Bloodraven and the fact that he felt cucked by Bloodraven for having Shiera Seastar 😂😂😂😂
@I am not Bob Dylan they are loyal to Blackfyre not for money
well they are mercenary, as long you pay them they will be loyal
Well, their word _is_ as good as gold.
Blackfyre also had a good claim through his mother. Daena was from the senior line while Aegon the unworthy and his father came from the Junior line. Lots of people thought Daena should have been queen after all her brothers died, not her uncle.
Daemon Blackfyre is pure Targaryen!
His name should be Daemon Targaryen!
@Pedro Lucas sucks being a bastard doesn’t it? Lol
After the Targaryen civil war, it was established that the male line would always be superior and preferred to the female line. So your senior/junior analysis doesn't work.
@Pedro Lucas That would have made more sense lol
Daemon could easily be the heir to the throne If Viserys II and Daeron I married Aegon IV to Daena instead of Naerys and Baelor!
Huh. I never thought of that but it still doesn't explain the golden company.
note: mummers' dragon vs mummer's dragon
the spelling suggests that we're looking at a specific mummer, not mummers in general
Damn. even 50 years after his age Daemon was revered as 'the wonder and the terror of his age'
GOALS.
The fact that Quentyn Ball joined Daemon the moment he didn't have his way shows how wise Daeron was to not accept him to kingsguard.
Yea I’m just 😊😊
Still wild that daemon blackfyre is the purest bastard ever 😂
@JEAN WEDAM yep his mother was targaryen royalty as well as his father
Fr bro
To think that bloodraven was the mentor to Bran who eventually get the iron throne is incredibly bizarre and I hope we get more information about this in the books if it eventually leads in that direction
Fun fact: Robert Baratheon and Rhaegar Targaryen were literally second cousins. Robert’s Rebellion was kind of just another familial civil war.
@VA We’re all kinslayers if you go back far enough. Your only responsibility is to care for those that care for you.
And if Jon becomes king in the book that’d still be a Targaryen on the throne
It is known
@Hiyama420 Wow, that would blow my mind! But no background there...
I like how Blackfyre is essentially an allegory for how one's greatest enemy is often the one of their own making.
damn, knowing daemon in the heat of battle helped his wounded enemy get to safety only to be peppered with arrows by his half brother kind just hurts man
He was the true king
It be your own people sometimes.
This game of thrones novel should be made into a series. Hopefully it would be written by competent writers who care more about sticking with the original material than their own ego.
@Noah Pancakes HotD is written by Martin lol
According to him HotD is how it happened, while the books (well...the few pages we get of it) are inaccurate/biased retellings
There even fucking up house of the dragons with there ego and going away from the story kindab
That would be nice
Amen to that.. rayan condal seems trustworthy.
Man, English teachers the world over have been waiting for this. “Why was his name bittersteel, what is the author trying to say?”
“Bittersteel was bitter”
Young Griff should have been included in Game of Thrones. They should have had added more seasons to do so
100%
@God Emperor of Mankind 3.0 they shouldn't have got rid of eurons bullshit, they should have given him his crazy cthulu bullshit he has in the books
Agreed, there are several characters and storylines that were cut that would have been great and provided material for more seasons
he could have been included if they got rid of unnecessary boring storylines like Grey Worm and Missandei, Euron's bullshit and cock jokes.
Introducing Griff as another antagonist in a post cersei, post white walker story could have been a cool pivot in the final season.
@Markus Haahr Euron is the final baddie, he is Harkoon the hero, the lightbringer who will bring the long night
That or crazy lovecraftian Euron.
They had a good set up. The golden company was introduced.
It’s funny how Robert is technically still Aegon the Conqueror’s descendant in that opening
@علي ياسر Ironically Targaryen we’re strangers to Westeros, long before the conquest
@Dustin Gaethje well isn't that hats his "small council" is for
@Mike Trujillo Not being a tactical genius makes him bad, as he can be manipulated easily by anyone who's gonna be there with him in King's Landing.
@Charlie Ricker fair
@Mike Trujillo tactical
@Kree Lesley just cause he's good doesn't mean he's a tactile genius, I mean he's still a kid
Can't wait for more videos on Targaryen history. Would love to see a video on Maegor the Cruel and Jaherys the Consilliator
Read Fire & Blood if there’s no video
14:52
While yes, the Blackfire Rebellion could've been stopped had Daemon at least been imprisoned, I still feel that killing Aenys and Haegon Blackfire (especially Aenys) was a bit much. Haegon maybe, since he had just surrendered and maybe the idea of rebellion was still heavy in his mind, but he killed Aenys after essentially betraying him by breaking his promise, which is enough to incite rebellious thoughts in others.
@mapping shaman that too only when no other male heirs were left
Plus aenys wasn't even being violent, he was trying to claim the throne peacefully.
Is it possible that Aegon didn’t actually legitimize his bastards? Is it possible that the maesters lied to create another rift in the Targaryen dynasty?
I really want the feud between Bloodraven and Bittersteel to come to fruition somehow, with the Golden Company maybe facing off against the Old Gods in some way
Still think “beneath the gold, the bitter steel” is one of the hardest lines of the books
Never forget the humble "Though All Men Do Despise Us"
"Unbowed, unbent, unbroken" is a good one because it shows how house martell has never truly been defeated.
"We do not sow" is such a blunt and badass threat in my opinion and I always thought it is pretty cool. But I like "Ours is the fury" and the phrase of the Golden Company as well.
@bait "Go on, take your bloody raven."
"Lady Catelyn felt as though her heart had turned to stone."
The fucking subtlety is stunning, George
Winter is coming
Daeron Targaryen liked to read books and listen to women
this enraged his father who punished him severely
House targaryen: "no one can defeat me"
House targaryen but slightly different: "think again"
Bobby B fk those white boys up
Ahahahaahh
@Meghana AP Eng Even the guy who started the Baratheon house was a bastard brother to Aegon.
@Khushi Shah. Yeah but that was not the reason he was king
@Faisal kamal Robert Baratheon is of Targaryen blood. He and Rhaegar were cousins. His grandmother was Rhaelle Targaryen.
This story can be said to be a lot more interesting and nuanced than the dance is, really hope to see the blackfyre story on screen
I did not see Blood Raven being the three-eyes crow, that blew my mind.
I’m dead at the fact you used a 18th century portrait of a woman and colored her hair green and called her Rohanne of Tyrosh 😂
That cracked me up too lmao
Daeron sounds based af. He stabilized the relationship with their enemy Dorn and kept the insane faction daemon in check!
Damn. Bloodraven is the true MVP of this world honestly.
It would lend legitimacy to both of them as monarchs.
ive watched this video probably 6 times and still learn somthing everytime...i love this universe and honestly if they made this into a movie or like a small series that would be amazing
this is seriously very well put together and makes things very very understandable where it can get muddled in certain areas
"Duncan The Small, who is probably named after Duncan The Tall" Another solid theory!
@Alec My theory is he is actually named after Small Paul from the Night's Watch
George R.R. Martin has been surprisingly quiet on this. No bullshit, it's actually _not_ confirmed.
EDIT: I mean he's been asked specifically and refused to confirm or deny if Duncan the Small is named after Duncan the Tall.
@Shadriand wow maybe George should make some prequels about this!
George RR Martin is definitely one of the greatest writers in the history of fantasy 🙌
This video was so well done! Thank you for making and sharing it!
If this is becomes a prequel. I could only imagine the amount of drama and politics. It'd be an Emmy material.
That, sir, is the most understandable and clear video about the Blackfyre Rebellions I've seen, compare to other ones on Clip-Share that are very theoric and not precise at all
And the Blackfyre era is absolutely amazing, they should do series on it, after House of the Dragon because it's an even more interesting period, with less dragons but more plots and battles, that are way more interesting to me.
I think Illyrio fed into Viserys’ delusions of grandeur to make Young Griff look like a more desirable option as king… I am just confused as to why he gave Danaerys the dragon eggs and all that 🤷🏻♀️
That virgin vs chad format had me rolling with laughter
oh rly cuz it had me rolling my eyes and cringing. those chad memes are garbageeee for insecure baby boys
@Ren he was a beta male and Daemon was on the sigma male grindset
“He liked to read books and listen to women.”
lmao
The funniest part about is that is SO on point.
We really needed another 5-6 seasons of Game of Thrones. The entire Young Griff plotline is amazing.
No wonder george is having a hard time ending his books. Like every theory, every plot is important. How is he gonna wrap everything up?
Being honest, I don't blame him for taking an eternity to finish the last 2 books!
This is absolutely fantastic. Awesome work!!!
Bloodraven one of most interesting characters in asiof I hope we know more about him in future books fire and blood or winds of winter
Bloodraven's idea of "sacrificing honor to save the realm" remembered me of Jaime, when he stabbed Aerys through the back, killing the king he swore to protect, to save the city, throwing his honor in the mud in the process.
"No more pious than a kings needs to be" is a sick monicker or compliment to earn though.
“This was 20 years after the first rebellion and these guys were still fighting over who got to root their sister” what a phrase lmao.
I've been rooting for Young Griff since he first appeared.
Let's hope he won't end up like Daeron I and Robb...
love these vids, the books are too dense and verbose for me to enjoy, but this format makes all of the interesting detail more digestable
Daenerys is gonna make a mess of things isn't she? Slaying aegon is gonna slay more than just one lie, especially the ones she's been telling herself about her own house's role in this story.
@Dillon Martin That would be interesting. Better than what we got in the show.
@G filmer I believe she will die in the long night as well but I believe she’ll die in childbirth like her mother before her. She will then reunite with Drogo but continue her line. The witch’s prophecy from book one basically.
@Nimble D. Crabb she always wanted to go home .her real home is Dragonstone
@cuacho I hope so, but I fear she won't accept that.
fact is if dany dies in the story slavers will ruin the cities and innocent ppl's lives again .she has done more noble things that should not be undone . ultimate ending should ben dany keeping the secret about griff's true identity and leaving to Dragonstone cuz she wants her children to be free .KL is not a good place for dragons
Great work as always. Could you please tell me what software you use for creating and editing your videos? Would really help me a lot, Thank you.
